Best Sopes in town!!! During my two year program at PSU, Chopollos is the place that kept my belly fully and my brain active. Each week on the day of my classes, I would walk over and order 2 sopes like clockwork. It was always a delight when the kind and friendly man in the truck remembered my order--he had it down to the color of the sauce I preferred! There is also a friendly woman often working, both of them are very approachable and I am so thankful for the delicious food they provided me. If not for my anxiety, I would have loved to learn their names and thank them personally! Their sopes are MASSIVE--I would eat one sope at lunch and save the other for dinner, basically getting two meals for the price of one. What I ordered didn't do it for me, but perhaps I caught them on a bad day. Ordered: Chicken burrito-- Like many of the Mexican food trucks downtown, the burrito was huge. Unfortunately, the chicken tasted stale and the burrito itself lacked flavor. The red salsa I was given also lacked any real punch and I ended up throwing away. I've only been here for breakfast but really enjoy their breakfast burritos (much better than the ones in the cafeteria at Smith). Probably a slight cut above the two other Mexican carts on this food cart row. All the various items I've tried here - most notably the Trio Burrito, classic breakfast burrito, and breakfast tacos - were good, but not too memorable. There are so many breakfast burritos out there, so what differentiates good from great is probably slight. Could be the type of bacon used, and more importantly, the size of the pieces. Mashed potatoes vs. cubed vs. hash browns. Is the tortilla crisp or just warm? The salsa! I'm a repeat customer, but just not wowed. I think this is the fifth Mexican cart to open up on the PSU cart block. Who did the market research? I'm happy with the quality of my food. I got the Trio Fajita Burrito (I think I have the name right) with shrimp, beef and pork. Very good, but they need to do a better job of chopping the tails off of the big shrimp. I haven't sampled two of the other carts, but this probably the best Mexican cart so far. They also serve homemade carrot juice, breakfast items and have a whole veggie section on their menu. They offer more plate options than the other carts. Expect to pay around $5. read more

I had my hopes up for the chorizo breakfast burrito; if you've seen some of my other posts, I'm a sucker for good chorizo. I got the chorizo con papas but ordered it without the papas, which they gave me anyway. There was quite a bit of potato, which is exactly why I ordered it without, because it takes away from the chorizo. I also didn't get enough cheese :( gotta have cheese on a breakfast burrito. The people I was with really enjoyed their food and said I should give them 4 stars, but one of them also got an incorrect order. This is my go-to Mexican burrito/taco cart. It is the best in the pod, and possibly downtown, in my opinion. I highly recommend the Chopollo burrito. I cannot even begin to explain my love for this little food cart... $1.50 per FLOUR tortilla taco(regardless your choice of meat) and it comes with pico, sour cream, queso, guacamole, OMGEEE. I've been going there so dang often that now, when I call my order in ahead of time for pick up, I literally just say "hola" and the awesome taco man on the other line is like "hola senorita, va hacer el mismo?"... Chopollos is hands down my go-to Mexican food cart whenever I'm around PSU campus/ south downtown. I usually just stick to 3 tacos, but the taco combo plate is on point too. I like the whole pinto beans with melted cotija on top. Meat: - I usually stick to carne asada, as compared with other carts it has a way way deeper flavor - Al pastor is super juicy, if I'm getting 3 tacos, I'll throw in 1 pastor - "Chopollo taco" is real good if you like barbacoa, and it has a different sauce from the others Portions and price: - Tacos are $1.50 each -- so pretty standard pricing for a taco truck. That said, they for sure could be charging more considering the location (lots of professionals frequent this stretch of food carts). - The portions are huge for the price. Chopollos is right by work which I love and it's Mexican which I am constantly lusting for. Also, it's cheap as hell. I can get a huge burrito there for $4.50! The guy at the cart is really nice and FAST at making my food, which I appreciate when I have 30 mins to walk there, get food and walk back to work which is a good 5 blocks away. So far I've tried the breakfast machaca burrito, next time I will for sure get the regular machaca. It totally hit the spot, but the only thing i wished I had was more spiciness. Chopollos is a weekly treat. Did I just admit that something from a food cart is a weekly treat for me? Yes...I did. That almost makes me a bonafide Portlander, right? The tofu burrito is my fave. It's what I buy every time. The only thing that varies is my quantity. I'm a vegetarian who tires of burritos with no protein other than black beans; therefore being able to get a burrito filled with fresh, grilled veggies, and tofu, sans rice, without losing its size is worth more than the $4.50 they charge. The guy at the window is so familiar w/my face & preference, that when I walk up, he greets me with a smile and asks, "how many"? I appreciate how he has never made fun of my Tejas Espanol, not to my face, at least. Chopollos deliciousness does not stop with their burritos. No, no, no. They have some of the most "tongue & tummy tantalizing sauces" to accompany their burritos. The salsa verde & avocado salsa are my "must haves". Lastly, these are big burritos, which make two servings for me. I leave you with three more comments: 1. These burritos retain their heat like no other food to go. I feel like I need heat-resistant gloves to hold them while eating, and that's AFTER the drive home. 2. They reheat to perfection, without the lackluster, leftover taste. 3. I heart Chopollos. Damn, that is a big menu. I liked that there were pictures accompanying many of the dishes, and I settled on the sopes because you can't get them many places and they're always delicious. However, they're also usually about half the size of the ones at this muy autentico food cart, which I was totally not expecting. The nice woman who took my order asked how many I wanted, I of course ordered two. $7 seemed quite expensive until I opened my little bag of tasty because those bad boys were huge! Luckily I was able to save the other sope for later. It took about ten minutes for them to get the food out to me, which I thought was a bit long until I heard the sound of pounding. As in, they're flattening the masa and frying it up fresh! I'm ok with waiting if it's for fresh. The masa base was so good, and my veggie sopes came with beans, lettuce, and avocado. Fairly simple, but the salsa verde gave it a nice heat. Whatever your tastes, they seem to have something for everyone here. They even do burgers, tortas, breakfast. If I'm taking any classes at PSU in the future this cart will definitely be on the rotation. read more

My trick of finding the right taco truck to go to in a pod? the one with the big ass line. That's how you know..and I'm right. This place serves up the usual suspects but better than average chicken and steak burritos. What we've enjoyed here though have been the tortas, at 5 it's hard to finish one on your own. This is what a food cart should be. Quick, fresh, and cheap food. After a long day of driving on our road trip up from coastal Oregon, we were in need of some fast tasty eats. Being from San Diego, we were a little hesitant about the food cart food quality, hoping it wasn't just the hype around here. We had a mex food craving, so we went for Chopollos. Being veggie, had to ask the chef is the pintos and the rice weren't cooked in lard or contained any chicken stock. Once he gave us the all clear we were happy to hear, I had the veggie burrito and my date had the bean, rice and cheese burrito. I haven't had this size of burrito since I was a meat loving fool. These burritos are huge, the size of a newborn really. My veggie burrito was amazing, so fresh and full of flavor. It has pinto beans, cheese, rice, lettuce, tomato, guac and sour cream all wrapped in a huge soft, warm fresh flour tortilla. Oh my gosh, every bite was heaven. I think I finished that puppy in about 10 minutes flat... Afterwards I was ready to rock, didn't sit like a brick either. When in Portland, mexican cart eats from Chopollos is the only way to go. I rarely give out 5 stars but this one deserves it. Amazing food. I got the Trio Fajita Burrito. It is crammed with steak, chicken, and shrimp with beans, cheese, cream, and rice. Holy .... It was amazing. No, seriously. It was ridiculously good. And the best part? Only $5. There's no other food cart and restaurants that serve that kind of burrito for that cheap. Chopollos is one of the rare places where you don't get what you paid for. Since it's right next to my classes, I'm definitely coming back here to satisfy my Mexican cravings. Wow. Talk about a complete surprise! My wife and I hit up the food carts here this afternoon and I was torn as to what to eat. I ended up at Chopollos - my eyes locked onto the bottle of Coke at the counter. That did me in. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered their Bacon-Cheeseburger with a side of fries, not with any expectations. Sometimes Mexican establishments can put out some great burgers, and for $5 + fries, I figured why not. The picture looked good. And, if nothing else, I got myself an ice-cold bottle of Coke. It took a little while to get the burger + fries, a longer wait than say, Brunchbox. But, it was alright. I tried the fries first and they were pretty dang good. Better than expected. They were a fairly thick and dense fry, with a little bit of crispness. And, they gave me a ton. Always a plus. The burger was very similar to what Brunchbox offers. I couldn't believe it. It had the same saltiness, the bacon was great - just an all around jem of a fast-food style burger. Would definitely come back here again, especially since they offer good fries and bottled Coke.
