2 Day Evaluation! Visiting from California I was in search of a tasteful yet healthy meal. Upon arriving we were seating immediately and our server name was Whitley. Menu was very similar to all the previous Yelp pictures. So I decided to order the Peso Burger with fries, boy was it picture perfect and delicious! The burger and fries came out hot (just the way I like it). The fries reminded me of IN & OUT Burgers (restaurant from California). The meat was juicy and the fries were real fresh cut potatoes. So I decided to go back the next day and try something else. Again service was great and our server Christy did a fabulous job. I ordered the hummus and it was delicious. It had a great authentic Mediterranean taste. Also a must try is the Cuban Sandwich yummmmm (nuff said). Service was great and the staff is super friendly. We hadn't been here in a long time, but though we'd have my husbands birthday dinner here. Boy, I'm shocked at how the quality of the service and food has deteriorated. The food looked like it was just dropped on the plate, no attempt at making it look nice and both the appetizers and my steak( at $33 a pop!!!) was tasteless!! The wine list is less than stellar and for spending close on $300 for a party of 4 on the dinner, I really expect a LOT better. We had a reservation requesting to sit upstairs since it's quieter, but we were told there was a big party. I did notice that numerous other people, who clearly were not part of said party, got seated upstairs after we reluctantly had to make do with a table downstairs. The hostess didn't really attempt to be helpful! Management needs to spend some time in the restaurant!! The bartenders, and there were a few, had masks, but on several occasions I saw them pouring and mixing drinks with masks off. You either wear your mask or not at all, which means we as the diners shouldn't have to wear them either. We won't be going back! We want to support our local small business during these difficult times, but management needs to wake up and provide better service and quality of food! read more

One of our favorite restaurants. Had late lunch there today and it was excellent. My wife had the French dip sandwich which was loaded with delicious meat. Plus an accompanying side of superb French fries. I had the 14 ounce ribeye steak. It was a marvelous cut of meat - excellently marbled and cooked perfectly. Meh says it all. Way overpriced for what you get. Mediocre at best. Sauces are too sweet. Steak was overcooked. Salmon glaze was way too sweet. Against my better judgement, I ordered based on waitress recommendation ... a chicken pesto gnocchi (because "all the waitstaff love it! I order it like two or three times a week"). I'm a sucker for both gnocchi and pesto. In hindsight, I'm not sure why I'd order an Italian dish at an American resturant but the waitress said it was so good I couldn't resist. Overly rich and super BLAND. No pesto flavor. Gnocchi was egregiously overcooked. Chicken was chewy. Only redeeming feature was the complimentary blue cheese chips and even those had a muted blue cheese flavor. Waitress was personable and attentive. read more

Had lunch there today. Horrible experience. We had been several times before and had great experiences. Today our service and terrible and food not so good either. We had 2 children with us. We watched at least 3 families come in after us eat and leave before we got our food. If I didn't ask about our food, we would have never gotten it. The when we did it was not good at all. Very good dinner tonight! We previously had a bad experience here-- seemed they were out of everything we tried to order-- but tonight-- NO issues. My only suggestion is less sweetness to the tomato basil soup and serve it hot-- not warm. Wedge salad-- excellent-- love seeing it done with romaine instead of iceburg lettuce. I've been to Chops & Hops several times and had a great experience for my birthday dinner last week. The food was amazing - by far the best steak in the Athens area! At a previous visit, someone at our table commented that the dinner special that night was the best fish he'd ever had. Our server was very friendly, and they even treated me with a special birthday dessert. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and usually bring out of town guests here as well! read more

Chops & Hops is as good as any restaurant in the Athens vicinity, and the service is excellent to boot. I was devastated to hear they removed the lamb burger from the memo, but the regular burger was so good that my disappointment was soon squelched. One of the top five burgers I've had in my life. Athens is thought to have a lot of good restaurants but that has not been my experience. Athens has a lot of restaurants with fantastic atmosphere but few restaurants with great food AND great service. Venture to the outskirts to Chops & Hops, and you will not be sorry. read more

Seafood and grits were great. This is a great place to grab lunch or wine and dine in the evening.

Stayed at the ashford inn and this was within walking distance. This had a great selection of beer and a choice of three ciders that I could select from. The food is good and the place within minutes of Athens. The only disappointing part of the meal was the backyard soup which came out a bit cold. Desert ok tried out a deep fried moon pie with ice cream . As with all fried food was searching for more crunchy parts on it. read more

Their onion rings sounded so exciting with the bacon, goat cheese and pecan promises but were underwhelmingly average. Steak was undercooked and bland; as if no salt or pepper were added. My husband and I both ordered medium-rare; his came out medium-well and mine was rare. The "duck fat" Brussels sprouts were overcooked, mushy, unseasoned and I'm pretty sure just rolled in olive oil; no palatable duck fat. Mashed potatoes were okay. Food was served cool and waitress forgot multiple items. Sure, $26 isn't going to get you a 5-star steak but you'd be better off at Applebee's. read more

Celebrated my birthday here with friends and family this past week. The service was outstanding! Excellent food and beer/wine selection. I must recommend the pimento cheese appetizer; it's addictive! Everyone's steak was cooked to perfection. My father, who was dining here for the first time, said, "This is the best ribeye I've had since The Peddler." We eat here often because of the locale and because in the past we have had positive experiences, but no longer. Pur visits have become increasingly disappointing. The service is slow. We literally waited more than an hour to be seated and to have our food served on a weeknight (we were assured of a shorter wait). The fish tacos tasted like bait. The fish was awful. I had to ask the hostess for our food (because our server was nowhere to be found). Our waitress was mostly absent and rude when present. About a year ago when I moved to Watkinsville, this place was my favorite. After a menu change a few months ago, things have seemingly gone downhill. In a past experience, I had the lemon pepper wings. Thinking that they would taste acidic and delicious, they were nothing short of what resembled a glazed donut. The sweet, sticky sauce that was added to it was coating my fingers, simply awful. I mean, aren't these supposed to take like LEMON PEPPER? Last night I decided to go back, but try something else. The prosciutto casserole that is served with the lamb chops is a joke. It's not even appealing to the eye. It's not colorful, or even remotely a good mixture of ingredients. I enjoyed my meal, minus the broccoli/squash/prosciutto bullshit, then proceeded to dessert. The passion fruit cheesecake was horrible as well. I allowed the bartender and another guest at the bar that was curious to try it as well, and they weren't impressed either. The small passion fruit beads were fine, but of course, the star of the dish was the cheesecake. Not only did it take like a thick slab of bitter cheese, but it was so hard and thick that it was hard to take a fork and get a bite. Cheesecake is supposed to melt in your mouth, but all I wanted to do was spit this out. Changes for you: experiment with ingredients that go together. Don't take your thanksgiving leftovers and put them together to make a "casserole." Also, get real cheesecake. Whatever that boxed shit you have isn't working. Rating: 1 star for the atmosphere, 1 star because I enjoyed most of my meal. Minus 1 star because of the dessert, -1 because of the "casserole," and -1 more star because this is the second time I've come here and have been disappointed. (Actually, make that 3 times I've been disappointed - but you fixed that disgusting blueberry sauce in your shrimp and grits, so I'll let it slide). I'll probably be back, but not until you fix a few things. read more

Our favorite restaurant in the area! My wife and I try to go there at least once a month. The food is absolutely wonderful. I typically enjoy a medium-rare steak that is cooked to perfection every time. My wife orders salmon, seasoned to bring out the flavors of the Alaskan fish but not overpower it. We have not had a bad meal there once. Chops and Hops has all the great staples that you would expect from a steak house but also have specials that are creative and unique. The large micro beer selection constantly changes, which is good to try new brews, but bad when I find one like and it is not there the next time I go. The wait staff has always been friendly and prompt. Last but not least, a table is set to honor our heroes that never made it home which has an abundance of challenge coins decorating the top. We saw the great reviews online and decided to try it out. It was pretty crowded and looked like a lot of regulars, but our overall experience wasn't all that great. They were a waiter short which really delayed things since it was a Saturday night. The burgers were okay, but nothing special. The bacon on my girlfriends burger was pretty burnt and my medium burger wasn't cooked very well. The pitta appetizer with their home made humus was really good though. They had a lot of good drinks to choose from as well. But overall the food wasn't all that great and some of the prices would indicate this was an upscale restaurant...but it's really not. It's good quality for athens/rural Georgia, but it doesn't compare to better food from any larger city. read more

The hostess was friendly and professional, the ambiance was industrial yet trendy, and the food was delicious. Chops & Hops is located in an unassuming shopping center and features some tasty American cuisine. The filet is always cooked perfectly and I love the roasted potatoes that accompany it. The specials are always a great choice as well. There is a private area upstairs where you can arrange to have a more private group dining experience. Service is generally very good, but if it is busy and they are using the upstairs, your service will most likely be compromised. When the upstairs is being used, we never get refills on our drinks and our server forgets if we ask for a condiment. You also have to make sure that you request the "free chips" that come with your entree otherwise, you'll never see them. I suggest to go on a slow weekday night to get optimal service. read more

I have been to Chops & Hops many times over the last few years. For several years it was our "go-to" restaurant. However, the last couple of times I have been the service has been terrible and yesterday was the worst ever. Our food was delivered in a timely fashion, but after opening our hamburger, we realized that he had not received the correct one. While trying to catch the waitresses attention, we could see that the table next to us had received our order and we had received theirs. Both of us had touched our food. The waitress thought that it was appropriate for us to just switch plates and was obviously put out when we both requested for a freshly cooked meal. We had to insist that she remove the meal from our table. Even if it wasn't the worst cold and flu season in recent history, that would not be acceptable, but add that on top of it and I just couldn't believe that was even suggested. We did eventually get our correct meal and it was very good, which is why I gave 2 stars instead of one. read more

We had lunch here. We started with the wedge salad which wasn't bad, but nothing spectacular. I then had the salmon with sweet potatoes and grilled vegetables. The plate was overly sweet the salmon with the Bourbon glaze, the sweet potatoes and grilled onions and carrots. The salmon was under salted so the dish was even sweeter. The reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because of the service....our waitress. The food was excellent, the atmosphere warm and inviting. Surprised we were seated as quick as we were for a Friday night...and they were busy. Our waitress however wasn't knowledgeable about the menu and draft beer menu, kept forgetting to remove our dishes and made us feel like we were bothering her when we asked questions...maybe she was having a bad day, hey we all have them... but other than that, this place is excellent. The filet melted in your mouth like butter. The salmon was cooked to perfection, the pecan glaze out of this world and the mashed sweet potatoes were so creamy and tasted like Thanksgiving. We had the moon pie deep fried in funnel cake batter....what!!?...never tasted anything so good! This really is for 3, maybe 4 people to share, it's so big!
