Chopstick and Rice conveniently located in one of the corners of Hawaii Kai Town Center, next to City Mill, and we've been missing out this whole time. What finally made us go here? I was dying for pho. They say pho helps hangovers, and that ain't a lie. Well, we've only lived in Nalo for 2 years, and when I Yelp pho, this place pops up. We'd normally go bale, or somewhere in town... but mannn... this is our go to spot now!! So Sunday morning, I was dying for pho after a night of drinking, and had already planned to head over as soon as they opened at 11. 10? 11? Idk they open around 10,11. I woke up early that Sunday to do errands and chores and stuff, trying to get everything done before I get my pho fix... man inside is big. So much seating, tables for up to 2-4-6-8 people. They had bar seating, or high table seating. Our server was really nice and patient. He probably knew I was hanging lol, nah but yah and he didn't get our order wrong. Everything came out spot on as ordered. I ordered meatball only pho, no cilantro and the wife ordered tripe and tendon pho and Thai tea. We normally get spring rolls to eat with our pho, but one of the recs on Yelp said try the banh mi sliders. Again, was hesitant, but server suggested to try, so, we got an order. Man!!! Those banh mi sliders were so good!! We got bbq pork. Wife was really happy and liked her tripe and tendon pho. I felt a little better after eating, and those sliders made it better for us as well. So definitely would be back again. We gotta try the spring rolls, cuz spring rolls is a big thing for me when I eat pho. Sometimes, you just gotta have the spring roll wit your pho. 10/10 recommend. They're just two different experiences. Chopstick and Rice is about the Americanized version of Vietnamese food in the suburbs. There are similar restaurants in other neighborhoods from the same family so they know their market and execute their food to fit. The restaurant is clean, well lit, spacious, with lots of window sight-lines, and efficient service. The food is familiar and predictable - rice or noodles with grilled chicken or pork, deep fried wheat rolls and fresh rice paper rolls, fried chicken, bánh mi, and phở . Everything is entirely in English. No surprises, but no discoveries. If I want a deeper dive into Vietnamese food I would travel into Honolulu's Chinatown. But to fill a craving I find them convenient, satisfying, and affordable. read more

Wanted a comforting dinner on a rainy day that was close to home, and options were limited since it was Christmas Eve. My husband and I love pho so since our usual go-to was closed, we luckily came here We got seated, and our table was facing 2 TVs - 1 was playing home alone, and the TV next to it was playing the grinch :) talk about multi-tasking -- watching 2 movies and eating at the same time lol! Unfortunately, they informed us their AC broke, but luckily it wasn't too bad (except after eating hot pho lol) We ordered: BBQ PORK VERMICELLI: I wanted a vermicelli plate and pho, but I knew I could not eat both, so I got this for my entree WITH a side of pho broth. The vermicelli plate was a little on the smaller side compared to other places I felt, but it was refreshing, and I got the best of both worlds because I put some of my vermicelli noodles in the broth so I got to fulfill my pho craving as well :) WONTON PHO: my husband got this and enjoyed the wontons in addition to the pho noodles and broth - it was a nice switch up from the usual basic pho The pho broth was good, and despite sweating while we were eating it (due to the AC being broken), we were pretty content lol. Actually - my daughter loved the pho broth so much, she kept drinking spoonfuls of the broth and refused to put down the spoon haha. But the real winner here is.. STRAWBERRY TAPIOCA! Omg we would come here just for this. One of the better tapiocas I ate on the island. While other places just usually have taro, coconut, or other basic flavors.. this place had multiple fruit flavors as well ( like strawberry, blueberry, mango, etc ). We got the strawberry one, and it was a perfect end to dinner. The tapioca was perfectly cooked and sweetened and the fresh chunks of strawberry really elevated the dessert! I can't wait to try the other flavors. Knowing I had to bake Christmas cookies with my toddler after, I opted for Vietnamese coffee to get some caffeine. It comes in a little pot and it filters through into a cup that has ice and condensed milk .. perfect sweetness and refreshing as well :) Overall, the service was friendly, the food was good, and it's in a convenient location (hawaii Kai town center), so I definitely recommend this place. The phos were excellent, actually one of the best tasting broths we've had there in a while. The only problem is every time we order takeout online we never get utensils. While it wasn't a noteworthy bowl, the soup was hot, filled with noodles, and had an ample amount of chicken Service was friendly, helpful, and efficient. I think there was only one server so I give her credit for keeping calm and cool throughout the night. Parking is easy and plentiful. The food is pretty yummy but every time we order we never get chopsticks with our to-go meal. First few times, we thought it was maybe because they were busy but we've been there more than several times now and we have never gotten utensils with our meal. Service is a bit slow and haphazard when they are busy. Tables aren't set and previous customer food left on tables. They have a QR code ordering system but require you to check out and pay when you order. Doesn't make sense as you have to tip on the bill before you get any service. It shows as the waitstaff don't really care or have service in mind. I think if they changed this so that you order online but check out after the meal through your phone this would motivate service staff. Good for take out as well. A bunch of Yelp Friends posted reviews and photos of this new establishment so we had to check it out. It's not very often that we drive out to Hawaii Kai, so we made it a point today since we had to do a Costco run. First, gotta love the free parking out front :) makes things so convenient! Second, this restaurant is very spacious. That is important if you plan on dining in. There's many clean tables that allow you to be socially distant from others. The bar seating looks fun too and Tina M., they have Hibiki ;) We ordered the beef salad to go. Overall, I'd say the portion size was huge. They serve chopped romaine lettuce with sliced cucumbers, onions, herbs, and shredded carrots. The slightly cooked beef was tender and topped with chopped peanuts. Most modernized Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to without the sacrifice of authentic flavors. A savory and hearty broth without an overwhelming taste of cinnamon like some Chinatown restaurants that I've tried. Pho is one of my favorite comfort foods and my heart was so happy when I saw how big the bowl was lol. The amount of meat was satisfying and I liked how much bean sprouts and basil they gave me. I believe it was around $15 which is a really great price in my opinion. Interior of the restaurant was well designed and clean. Excellent customer service and the workers all seemed to get along really well. I've heard great things about the house fried chicken but I just didn't have the room to order it by myself lol. We decided to try Chopstick and Rice last night. Chopstick and Rice is located in Hawaii Kai Town Center where Tex808 used to be. They are next to Koa Pancake. Because they aren't a bar like how Tex808 was, they've made the place a lot more well lit in there. We called our order in because we haven't really eaten out. My husband wanted to try the fried chicken so we got an order of that. We also got a four piece spring roll appetizer, meatball pho, kids pho, and #16 which was the rare steak, brisket, and flank pho. They told us 20 minutes and our order was ready when we arrived. The pho was good but I've had more flavorful broths at another place. This was more of a subtle mild kind of broth. I really liked that they offered a kids pho. The kids pho doesn't come with any meat in it. It's just pretty much noodles and broth. It's okay because I just shared my meatballs with her so she could have something in hers. But I liked that they had a kids portion. I don't think I know another Vietnamese place that serves kids pho. The spring rolls were good. They have a good portion of lettuce and sides to make the spring rolls. The fried chicken was a little different. It wasn't flavored like a traditional chicken. It had different spices on it. Went after an afternoon hike and ordered the rare steak, brisket, and flank pho. They have option of beef, chicken or vegetable broth and of course for the beef. And really healthy portions. I have to say it was in the top 3 pho broths I've had and that's coming from someone who's used to pho in the S.F Bay Area. Over the past two weeks of reading stellar reviews about this new Vietnamese restaurant located in East O'ahu, I convinced my husband to market in Costco -Hawai'i Kai and have lunch at this restaurant. Nyuk! Nyuk! Dining out at places that friends review are the times where I can be easily swayed. We drove 10 miles from our neighborhood and quickly found Chopstick and Rice in the oceanside corner of the Hawaii Kai Towne Center. Chopstick and Rice occupies the former Tex808 BBQ space near City Mill. As of September 13, O'ahu's mayor issued an emergency order (60-day trial) to combat our current high infection rates. The regulation requires patrons of restaurants or bars, museums or gyms to present proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination or negative result from a recent (within 48 hours) COVID-19 test. We downloaded our completed COViD-19 vaccination cards to the "Safe Access O'ahu" program. Because of this regulation, when we entered Chopstick and Rice, the hostess checked our ID (Hawai'i Drivers License) and our vaccination card. After checking in, we were seated and asked to complete a contact tracing form. Rico, our server, greeted us in a friendly manner, provided us with menus and glasses of iced water. He was personable and energetic as he gave us a little bit of background of Chopstick and Rice since it was our first visit. We did say which three menu items we were interested in and asked him for menu recommendations. Rico agreed with the three items saying that he's tasted all of our choices, and he enthusiastically recommended the fried chicken appetizer. Also, he warned us about the generous portion sizes so he suggested that we share the bowl of soup noodles. It was at that point, I agreed to sharing with my husband since I had my eyes on dessert. Alas, Rico burst my sweet tooth bubble when he said the desserts weren't available yet but, in reality, I could do without dessert. After placing our food order, Rico brought out squeeze bottles of hoi sin and sriracha sauces. But, that's when I asked about their in-house chili pepper sauce AKA sa tế. Rico said the kitchen had just made a fresh batch but cautioned us about its spiciness. Honestly, I was expecting a fire-breathing experience with the sauce but, instead tasted the fruit of the chilis with its heat from the seeds. Other flavors that I tasted in the sa tế were lemongrass, shallots and garlic. FOOD: -House Fried Chicken: Marinated boneless chicken thigh in crisp fried seasoned crust and served with a sweet-salty sauce. Who can resist this appetizer's crunchy exterior and its juicy chicken meat? My husband was all over this fried chicken. He ate most of this appetizer without using the sweet-salty dipping sauce because the chicken was so tasty. I ate 2 pieces to taste the flavors and enjoyed its mouthfeel. Rico did mention they also use the same batter coating on their chicken wings but we were happy to have ordered the boneless chicken. Ah, next time. $11 -Spring Rolls: The menu choices offered either 2 or 4 rolls. We chose the 4 rolls and were pleasantly surprised with the fresh lettuce leaves, rice vermicelli, cucumber slices and pickled carrots and turnips. There was enough to wrap each half roll. Each spring roll was tightly and evenly filled with meat, vegetable and glass noodles. A word of warning that I offer out is to pause a few seconds before biting into the hot out of the fryer rolls. The rolls were excellent in flavor and texture and the nước chấm had a nice balance of savory and vinegar. 4/$9 -Spicy Beef Noodle Soup: When Rico delivered the bún bò Huế, I was relieved that we took his suggestion to order one bowl to share. The huge serving was steaming hot and we could smell the aromas as Rico approached our table. The spicy broth was wasn't as spicy as we've tasted at other places but, there was a kick. I could taste the beefy flavor that was complemented by the earthy spices in the broth. All of the beef slices were toothsome and well-flavored. The rice noodles were perfectly cooked as they didn't bloat or break apart when bit in to. We didn't ask for our bean sprouts to be blanched because we knew the broth would steaming hot enough to cook them while still leaving a bit of its natural crispness. $13.50 We'd certainly return to Chopstick and Rice for more of their menu items. Our experience was top-notch from their COVID-19 safety compliance through a good paced service level. The portions were generous, delicious and priced well for this new space in East O'ahu. read more

Yay, a new Vietnamese restaurant in HI Kai! Hubby and I have been on a pho restaurant crawl around town, and we welcome this new restaurant, Chopstick and Rice in HI Kai! With its grand opening on 9/9/21 at the HI Kai Towne Center next to City Mill in the former Tex808 BBQ Restaurant (Tex808 BBQ moved to the neighboring HI Kai Shopping Center next to Liko's in the former Mexico Fiesta Restaurant), it offers authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Owner and chef Hong Vuong comes from a family that operates a number of Vietnamese restaurants on Oahu. His sister owns Mama Pho in Aina Haina and the Ala Moana Shopping Center, and other family members own Pho Bistro in Waipahu and Niu Baguette BBQ and Noodle Soup in Kakaako. A finance major by trade, Hong also has the operational expertise in running a restaurant and relies on the proven recipes of his family in their successful restaurants. With its name "Chopstick and Rice," I initially didn't think it was a Vietnamese restaurant, as most Vietnamese restaurants have "Pho" in its name. But Hong said that he wanted to get away from that, as it appeared to be redundant. I also foresee him expanding the menu to include other offerings. Menu offerings include a wide range of Vietnamese dishes: appetizers (spring/summer rolls, salads, fried chicken, wings, etc.); rice plates; vermicelli dishes; pho (beef, chicken seafood, tofu); specials (stews, soups, sliders); banh mi sandwiches; wraps; desserts; and drinks. You can access the menu using the QR code from your cell phone or from their hard copy creative menu. The laminated menu pages are bound at the top with two-hole rings that are attached to a thick wooden plank that you flip the pages over the top. We've tried the following thus far: · Combo pho. This includes rare steak, brisket, flank, tendon, tripe, and meatballs. It was served with fresh bean sprouts, basil, jalapeno peppers, and lemon. They also have a house made hot sauce that is potently hot and goes well with the pho. Served piping hot, the broth was clean without any oil residue and very flavorful! Portions are generous. · House fried chicken appetizer. This fried chicken is delicious, served piping hot, and made with lemongrass, lime leaves, and cornstarch batter and served with a sweet chili sauce. The cornstarch gave it a great crunch, and when dipped into the sauce, it was very tasty! · Grilled pork bahn mi sandwich. Tasty sandwich of grilled pork with pickled sliced daikon and carrots, cucumbers and chopped green onions. A little more veggies + cilantro, though, would be good to make it a little more filling. The bread was perfect, crispy on the outside and chewy soft in the inside. Heard that the brisket banh me was good, which will be next time. Staff is friendly, personable, and accommodating. Bear in mind that we head an early dinner at 4:30p on a weekday, and we were the only ones dining in before others started to walk in. Our server, Rico, was very attentive to our needs, and was spot on taking our orders to processing our payment. Other reviewers have noted that service has been slow, but note that they are still in process of hiring staff and are trying to reduce the wait time during peak periods since its grand opening; and we're sure they'll get to where they want to be after working out the initial hiccups. Owner Hong, who speaks perfect English, is so very gracious, and spent a few minutes from his busy schedule to answer some of my questions. The restaurant interior is spacious, clean, bright, and contemporarily styled in a modern wooden décor with colors of gray and black. There are ten tables, with each table seating four people, with tables that can be pushed together for larger groups. There are two large TV screens in the bar area, which is not yet open until the restaurant is approved for their liquor license. Stunning and colorful acrylic glass print photos adorn one of the walls. Air conditioning is cold, especially when the restaurant is not filled. COVID requirements in place. Dining in requires presentation of your vaccination card and an ID, as well as completion of the contact tracing form. We saw staff turn away people who were not vaccinated. Tables are placed appropriately for social distancing, masks are required, and hand sanitizer is available. Hours of operation are: daily 11a to 9p. Currently, BYOB, until the restaurant's liquor license is approved. Free parking available in parking lot. Credit cards accepted. We welcome Chopstick and Rice to our neighborhood and know that once the initial new restaurant hiccups are ironed out, it will be an excellent addition to the HI Kai community and giving them a 5-star rating! New pho place in Hawaii Kai town center (near city mill) is a nice clean open place to enjoy a bowl of pho. Not a fan but definitely recommend checking them out to see if you like it or not. Service was lame. I notice the manager walking around ask all the tables if everything was okay then passes by ours and says nothing. Broth is plain and could be more flavorful. read more

I drove a long way to get here. I sat down and ordered and then asked the server when the washroom was. He said it was out of service. I am kupuna and my bladder is not what it use to be. It is illegal for a business to be open if there is no bathroom. I am a paying patron. Shame on this business. My chicken salad was good but I won't be back. read more
