I think I may be spoiled with the Asian food that surrounds me up in LA. The options are endless. I hear that in San Diego, Asian restaurants are not that plentiful. By experience, I can probably agree. Usually, our intoxicated selves would be late night dining at Tajima's. Located literally two plazas over from this place. However, we just spent a long day at Sea World and it was quite early. Chopstix was pretty busy when we arrived which was on a Saturday night around right before 7pm. Luckily we showed up right at that time because after that, they had to start the waiting list and the place was packed. Service was great and all smiles for the most part. I ordered the unagi don medium. I have no idea what I was thinking at that moment. I usually love unagi but while I was eating it here on this night, it just felt weird. It's not the restaurants fault but I just spent the day staring at live eel at the aquariums in Sea World and here I am, devouring a plate of eel. Hmmm.... Probably a bad choice. I sampled my friend's ramen. For SD standards, maybe this was pretty good. For mine, it was mediocre. Sorry, I'm not a stuck up ramen professional eater or anything but there was just something off. Their crunchy roll ($5, not bad at all) was decent. In the end, our bill was aout $60 something. We had a party of 6 so gratuity was automatically added. I may come back here again (if I'm in the area) because they do have a nice variety of different rice bowls (dons). read more

Where do you go when you're craving real asian food? Kearny Mesa! My friend and I were craving noodles so we headed down here for lunch based on the fact that it was the highest yelp rated ramen place in the area. I ordered the seafood udon and my friend had the ramen. Um, we practically licked the bowls. Food: Great Service: Okay, typical asian restaurant Value: Great Definitely coming back here to try more of the menu! read more

I have been eating here since 1993. It is always consistent and flavorful. Great portions and taste. Fast service. Efficient. My favorite has always been the Hiyashi Soba. A cold noodle dish that initially was only offered in the summer. But, now it's around all the time. I have had all the dishes and there is not one that misses the mark. read more

Great and consist food, I do wish they would add a few new items once is while. They have been advertising NEW for limited time, Cold Noodles, but this has been at least since 2008, and still called NEW. I like this place, and the staff! Highly recommend their food - which is always very good! read more

The tempura shrimp and ramen were delicious! Parking can be an issue but we got lucky.

This place was surprisingly good. The staff is super friendly and the food was delicious. I ordered the build your own ramen with miso broth and tempura shrimp + poached egg. My husband got the seafood udon. Both were Sooo good. The broth was so flavorful (and I'm super picky about broth/ramen.) We will definitely be coming back here!! read more

I always end up coming here as a last resort with my family when we've had enough of other restaurants and really can't think of where to go for dinner on our weekend grocery runs. It's not because this place is not good, but this place is not that great either. First, parking is an issue in this plaza - major reason why we never think of this place for eating dinner unless we have to. Second, this place is pretty tiny so seating is fairly limited. If you have a party of 3-4 or more, you may have to wait awhile when they're busy. Third, I NEVER know what to order here! Nothing really stands out here & even though there are MANY items on the menu, there's just not one thing that's ever earned my palate's trust...so I always end up getting the katsu because it's the most basic food item and it's hard to mess that up! My favorite item here is their crunchy roll - we're LOYAL fans! Sometimes we might even order 2 just to satisfy the cravings! (they're good both here & Chopstix #2, in case you're wondering) Other than that, food is pretty average here. Their gyozas are just okay, too (I'm a gyoza fan!). read more

My friends and I have been coming here since high school. It's great for an everyday meal. The Crunchy Rolls are a great deal and I love their Chicken Katsu Curry. Service has been great 80% of the times I've gone. The other 20% has been when they're busy, so I can't complain. One of the things I do like about them is that when they are jam packed, they'll take your order and the food will be ready not long after you get seated. Their parking lot isn't difficult to get into, but it's a pain to get out of sometimes due to the street parking causing blindspots read more

Their udon are the best. Ramen not so much, go to Tajima if you want ramen. When compared with their other rice/noodle dishes, their portions are larger, cheaper, and taste better than Tajima's. I love their crunchy roll special. :) read more

Usually when I go to Japanese restaurants, I order sushi. It's basically all I eat when it comes to Japanese, not that I don't like other Japanese dishes....I just REALLY love sushi! So when Chopstix's menu was primarily non-sushi, I knew I was in a little bit of a pickle. We did share the California roll and I loved it....the fish was super fresh and delicious (6 rolls, of decent size). I ended up having the Mabo Udon and it was really good. I've been a fan of udon noodles ever since I traveled to Japan and learned how to make udon noodles from scratch (learning how to make food is half the beauty of appreciating the food we eat!). Anywho, these noodles didn't disappoint and the flavor of the broth with the combination of tofu and pork was delicious! I could see this being a great soup to eat during the winter or if I get sick. Three stars is because while it was good....not totally sure I would go back. There are so many great spots like this in Kearney Mesa, so I'd like to try something else...preferably with some more sushi! read more

So glad I found this place! I got the mabo ramen, which was about $6.95 (or $5.95 even?) and was delicious! Bf got the curry ramen, which was also really good. I think I liked the meat in the curry ramen better, but the broth/flavor of the mabo ramen better. Crunchy roll was a special for $4.95. You can also get a cool special where you get a large beer and a choice of appetizer for $5.95. We got the tofu salad (bf wasn't too fond; I loved it). The tofu salad had a great dressing, topped off with ginger. The place was packed but we were seated pretty quickly. Service was good. Love this place! read more

Chopstix is like a Japanese Denny's, so don't expect too much. It's pretty consistent as far as the meals go, but, just doesn't seem to exceed the "Yeah, it was OK" guage. I usually get the tonkatsu, or the Ramen, which are both OK. You can add a Crunchy Roll for lunch for about $5, which is not to bad. Like I said the food is OK, just not anywhere near what you get at Tajima, read more

Old stand-by Japanese restaurant. I never understood why they didn't buy the building next door, back when it was up for lease, to expand the restaurant a bit. It's small, and there can be a wait, but for the amount of food that you get, it's worth it. The ramen and soba noodles are good. They have a lot of different varieties, so you have a pretty good chance of finding something good to eat. Their combo meals provide a good amount of food. Parking here, like many places in the Kearny Mesa area, can be a drag. There's a parking lot behind the complex that Chopstix is in, so if you can't find anything up front, you may be able to find something in the back. read more

Quaint little Japanese place that my friend recommended. She loves the oyako soba soup. I've personally been searching for a place that makes decent to good yakisoba since I had some at a place in New York six years ago. Still have to keep looking. This place does make much better yakisoba than some of the other Japanese places in San Diego, but it can't top the stuff I had in New York. Parking is iffy if it's crowded. It's a small lot. At least the place is clean and lit very well. Not crazy about the music choice since it's mostly sappy pop songs. And I thought it was odd that the staff was mostly women. In fact, I don't think I saw one male employee in the joint. Not that it really matters. The service is pretty good. read more

Been having a sushi craving for weeks now so my brother takes me here..i'm a little skeptical because i can be really particular about my sushi. I order california and crunchy roll combo which includes miso soup which btw was very tasty. I was very pleased with the freshness of the avocado inside my rolls, the celery wasn't overbearing. Serving size was great for the price! Presentation was beautiful, plates were unique and of good quality. Very clean and had great music selection playing in the background. Not to mention a very cute mixed boy with tattoos as my waiter! Lol read more

This is staple Japanese food, as in it's the core of eating Japanese when you're hungry to eat, and just... Eat. The walls: cinder block, the posters ~ a few hand drawn ~ the music, piped in from a local radio station... Why mention this? Authentic. Food like I had when in Japan, eating at some back alley place just off the train station. Filling, fresh ingredients, made right, served fast and hot. It's not a small place, but parking can be a challenge and it the restaurant fills up fast. Service is friendly, if not efficient. It's one of those places you'd come back to again, and again because it's comforting good food. read more

I love this place because their crunchy rolls are delicious, filling, and under $5! I brought a couple of my friends who ordered ramen and a mabo tofu rice bowl. We originally were trying to get into that other japanese place that had a conveyor belt but the wait was 1.5 hours, so I yelped and went here. I am SOO glad we did. Very good Japanese food and I liked the vibe of the place. We waited for only 5 minutes. they are known for their Gyoza and YES its really good. The daily special is that if you order a Large Beer the gyoza is only .99 cents! great deal. We ordered Chicken Oyaku Don buri very good, chicken katsu, tenzaru soba, and sushi. Everything was very good and the shrimp tempura was really good as well. I would love to go back to this place. The name was misleading I thought it was Chinese, but this is definitely japanese. This restaurant is located on the busy street of Convoy. Looks decent from the outside. Has tinted windows and I think yellow overhangs above the windows. Parking can be good or bad. Theres maybe around 20 parking spots in the front and about 20 around the back through this little alley way. Not a lot of people know that there is parking in the rear. I come here for 2 things. Their Oyako Ramen which is 5.96 if I recall correctly and their 4.95 sushi special. They put a lot of chicken in your Oyako and the sushi is large and cheap. I went just recently and noticed that they raised their prices by around a dollar. I order the same thing and notice that they put HALF the amount of chicken that they usually do. Maybe they did it on accident but for sure, they raised the price and they gave less. I think 3 stars is appropriate now because its not cheap anymore and they skimp on the portions making this place just OK. read more

Crunchy Rolls, always on "special" (or so far every time I went it is...) for $5, not bad. Crunchy rolls are a must when you come here. Just, get it! Go, go! I really like their chicken katsu-don, and it is very filling, so you can take some home, as well :) I have never tried it before, so it was a first for me, but it tastes pretty darn good! The eggs over the rice, and the katsu...just perfect! I typically don't like to eat that much rice, (Asian fail, right? haha) so perhaps that's why I had so much leftover, but I even enjoyed my leftover lunch and dinner the next day. Their shoyu ramen is eh, alright. I personally think Tajima is better, but perhaps if Tajima's broth is too flavorful for you, than this ramen will hit the good spot. However, for me, it was a bit bland, but it wasn't bad overall, just not AMAZING. My friend ordered the seafood udon and said it was good, so i'll trust her judgement on that, but I have yet to try their udon. Prices are great, not too expensive, and just right. Waiters and waitresses are good with giving you water, THUMBS UP! read more

Still trying to find good, decent Chinese in Southern California. This place is not even close! My technique to see if I will order a meal from a Chinese restaurant is simple. I order an egg roll and Wonton soup. The egg roll was greasy as hell inside! No shrimp, just some green and grayish stuff. Edible if you have a napkin handy. Blot your egg roll and you'll understand. Now for the Wonton soup! It had Broccoli, caulifer, 4 pieces of shrimp and a bunch of chicken. The wontons were obviously potstickers bought at a supermarket in the frozen section. The vegetables were definitely from frozen, not fresh. And to top it off the soup tasted exactly like Miso soup not Wonton soup. I love Wonton soup and real Miso soup so I know the difference. I asked the owner/Manager and he pointed to something in the soup and said he uses Chicken broth. All in all I would not go back or reccomend this place. Also the prices were high for this crappy food. Stay away!!!! read more

If I could, I would give chopstix 3 1/2 stars. I've had some pretty good stuff and some average items here. For the quality and quantity of the food for the price, Chopstix is hard to beat. I like the atmosphere/ambiance here also especially when I want to have a more intimate dinner with my boo. Chopstix is a lot quieter than Tajima's down the street and has a cozy almost tavern like feel, like I imagine some eateries in Japan are like. I recommend: katsu katsu and katsu...they do it well here the chicken katsu plate ( comes with miso soup and salad), the salad is unremarkable though crunchy roll (heavy on the spicy mayo and super americanized, but still tasty) and best of all a steal at $5.95 mabo tofu tonkotsu don- my fiancé recently tried this and it was really good. The portion is pretty huge and filling. It comes with ground pork, tofu, and rice in their tasty mabo sauce and a pretty generous portion of tonkotsu on the side. It was a little salty, but still very flavorful and good. The deluxe nabeyaki udon was average in my opinion. I wasn't wowed by the broth. My fiancé has had the mabo ramen here and it was really salty and the flavor wasn't my cup of tea. Maybe their other ramens are good : /. The service here is pretty average, but the prices are SUPER AFFORDABLE and they have a lot of more unique Japanese comfort foods (like soba and japanese curry) that a lot of sushi places don't serve so I'll bump them up for that. I'd come back here, but I'll be sticking to my favorites. read more

I love this place. I been here more than once already. And, I couldn't help but ordered the same thing each time! Their Katsu- Don! MM.. Actually, slight variations of that. Chicken Katsu- Don. Tamago- Don. And Oyako- Don. (Katsu- deep fried breaded pork, Tamago- no meat, Oyako- diced chicken) All Dons. I am guessing "don" mean rice? These three dishes were all just different meat cooked with eggs & a variety of vegetables, on top of rice. The best part of the dish to me is not the meat. The eggs, onions and rice are simply heavenly. I am guessing they cook the rice with some sort of chicken broth or something. It's just so good that I couldn't make up my mind to try other things on their menu, even though everything sounded really good. I suggest trying one of the Don's on your first visit. You will be addicted to them! Ohhh, and their food are always fresh and hot! Major plus. They definitely give you a big portion, especially for these Don dishes. You actually get salad (love the dressing) and miso soup along with your dish for just $7-$8 (depending on the meat you get)! Awesome deal. I usually split the dish into two meals and take half of it home for consumption on the next day. So that means $4/meal! Great price for some really yummy food. This place is definitely as good as it gets. Service is efficient and friendly too! The only down side is the parking situation. It gets pretty crowded during lunch/dinner times. But then again, that's the case with all restaurants in the Convoy area. read more

Not like Chopstix really NEEDS my positive review but yeah, their menus say something along the lines of "you haven't had Japanese food until you've had our food" and they weren't kidding. I never was much of a fan of ramen, I've never had any that I thought I couldn't get from packaged ramen that you can get at the supermarket for less than a dollar. The wonton-men here ($6.50) changed my mind! First, it's cheaper than Tajima and second, it comes out in a bigger bowl. The restaurant itself is a bit smaller than Tajima but the hostess/waitresses are so friendly. When I came on Friday night, there was a list of about 6 people ahead of me and our party of 5 only had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. It was nice to see that they had seating options, too. A bar in the middle, perfect if you're dining alone or with one other person. Random note: their aquarium was bright and clean! What "wow-ed" me was their crunchy roll, originally $6.95 or something but now only $4.95! My friend ordered it and I freeloaded a piece off of her =P It wasn't great but it wasn't bad. I would definitely get it again for $5. I expected a small roll and maybe 5 pieces but it was actually pretty big, definitely worth your money! read more

Overall 3.5 stars for me but rounding up due to the cheap prices. Came here at 3 pm and was surprised to see that they were still really busy. The service is polite and quick. The restaurant was clean and simply decorated. The crunchy roll special was only $5 and seemed to be pretty popular according to other reviews. The roll despite being only 5 pieces was huge (seriously almost enough for its own meal) with delicious sauce and crunch. GREAT DEAL! The soup menu included choice of ramen, udon, or soba noodles with your own toppings and broth. I ordered the udon with shrimp tempura ($8). The broth was yummy and flavorful. My boyfriend ordered the tonkatsu don ($8) that came with miso soup and salad. The pork was too dry for me but the sauce they have on the eggs and rice was really tasty. There are definitely better Japanese restaurants in San Diego but the prices here are pretty great. read more

I am a little confused by the high reviews for Chopstix, as I left feeling pretty underwhelmed. I personally got the mountain vegetable ramen with Shoyu broth, and the best thing about the ramen were the mountain vegetables. The broth was super bland! I also tried my dad's Tonkotsu ramen, which was super bland too :( The crunchy roll was also super underwhelming. The chicken katsu was decent, but it tasted like something I could make at home. While the service and the price were on-point, I think I'd rather go somewhere else for better ramen. read more

This place seemed promising, but as I left, my stomach was in pain. My girlfriend and I ordered the crunchy roll to share. We each both ordered mabo ramen. She overall thought the place was good, but my experience was different. The crunchy roll was alright. I would have liked it a little warmer. I've tasted better elsewhere. For the mabo tofu, I don't feel that mabo tofu and ramen go together. The first few bites were tasty, but after that, the meal got really heavy. Ramen alone is oily and if you add mabo tofu as well, it adds to the oiliness, which doubles it. The meal kept getting heavier and heavier with the oil that I only ate half and had to stop. I guess I'll eat each one separately next time. read more

I tried the cold noodles on a hot day and found it pretty interesting. I wouldn't say it's "cold" the way Korean noodles are cold. It just isn't in hot soup. It's basically a small amount of noodles with a ton of veggies and condiments on top with a soy sauce mixture to pour on top. I liked it for what it was, but probably wouldn't order it again as I prefer my noodle in soup. I liked that you can pick the type of noodles you want for most of the noodle dishes. We also ordered some rolls that were tasty and my companions liked their ramen and yakisoba as well. read more

I used to be a regular at this place via DoorDash until tonight. This place is horrible about confirming DoorDash orders. You'll sit there for 30 minutes wondering if the order will ever be confirmed. I ended up canceling an order last weekend or farther back because of this exact issue. Well tonight I made my order and I got 6 phone calls from DoorDash rapid fire. I'm talking in less than 2 minutes she made 6 phone calls. Once I got to my phone, I was speaking to a woman from the restaurant. She threatened me if I didn't confirm my order verbally they wouldn't be making anything because I canceled my previous order. I've been here twice and both times were excellent. My first visit here I decided to try out their ramen. I ended up ordering the miso ramen, which I found was just "okay". I'm not a ramen person, and honestly I feel like they all taste the same, but I really wasn't disappointed with this one. It wasn't out of this world, but it wasn't as bad as other place. During my second visit, I ended up ordering their sushi combination which included a California roll, spicy tuna roll, & their crunch roll. Being new to San Diego, the crunch roll must be a popular roll in the area and I have to say that the crunch roll here was delicious! The portions of this sushi combination is very generous for the price and honestly I feel like I could have shared a few pieces or two. I'm definitely glad I discovered this place.
