After reading the raving reviews, I guess I expected more. On the plus side, they are open late to grab some food after a party or concert. They have happy hour items which are discounted after 9pm. The food was decent but average. Other reviews note portions are generous but I didn't feel that was the case. I was surprised by the high prices for some items such as the soba noodles which were over $21 for a small plate of noodles and some frozen shrimp tempura. The rolls were fine but again over $17. Service was minimal but we didn't need much. The parking lot is tiny and so are the spots so beware. For a late night meal we paid $60 for average Asian food which seemed steep. We each ordered a chicken teriyaki bowl, the mixed tempura, a miso soup, and a calamari roll. Again, food was good, but nothing to brag about, maybe because everything we ordered was basic. But the calamari roll was identical to a shrimp tempura roll with spicy mayo and eel sauce. The place was clean with randomized music ( Christmas music played during the queue ). This is why I gave them 3 stars. We saw our server 3 times, once to seat us, once to take our order, and once to give us our food. The food was okay, the roll fell apart when you pick it up. The service was the problem. The server looked at us with distaste, and sat us down without a word. Waited 10 minutes for our food, 10 minutes into eating our food we received our bill. Mind you a couple of tables came in around the same time as we did, and did not receive their bill until 30 minutes later. We had not reached even the half and hour mark on our time there. I have been coming here since I was in college. This spot has been opened for 30+ years and I know why they are. Food is always consistent and tastes home cooked. Pricing is extremely reasonable and portions are large. The staff is extremely nice and the setting feels like a home style Japanese restaurant. I personally always get the mabo and curry combo. One of my favorite ramen places in San Diego. I've been going to it for many years. The staff are always friendly and attentive. The furniture has gone through a few renovations throughout the years too to keep it comfy. Though no longer on the menu, I still order the wakame (seaweed) ramen and they'll still make it. Their shoyu broth is my favorite, it is full of umami flavor, maybe from mushrooms. Their wonton chasyu ramen is pretty good too. Also like their mabo ramen, okayko don, curry, stir fry veggies, vegetable tempura, yakisoba. Some differences from other ramen places I should mention: - their egg is a hardboiled egg, not a soft boiled egg - their chasyu is lean meat, not the fatty ones. A very cozy Convoy staple perfect for dining solo or in a small group. The dishes are a mix of Japanese comfort & popular Japanese fusion. The servers are very kind and on top of it. On my most recent visit, my boyfriend and I came during happy hour. We got a large beer that came with a free appetizer; we picked the pan fried gyoza. They were filled with pork and cabbage and tasted savory but slightly bitter, which together made a great taste. The filling was cooked perfectly with the slightly firm cabbage. The wrapper was good, slightly firm and gummy. The bottoms were pan fried until perfectly firm. The gyoza sauce had a good dilute soy flavor with a slight tanginess. I got the unagi don; the eel was very soft with a good balance of fattiness and meat. The rice was cooked perfectly and was fluffy. Most eel sauces I have tried all taste the same, but the sauce here has a slight smokiness that made it taste unique. It came with miso soup that had a great miso flavor, not too strong with fresh green onions. Salad was crisp & the dressing was tangy. My boyfriend got the mix tempura which came with shrimp, kabocha, onion, zucchini, and carrot. All of these pieces were perfectly tender, and the tempura sauce had a good dilute soy flavor. The batter is not as firm and crisp as I like, but it still had good texture. Also came with miso soup and rice. We shared the salmon lover roll. We asked for no cream cheese and they kindly accommodated. The salmon, rice, and avocado were all fresh. The soy-mustard sauce had a good soy and wasabi-like flavor. It was served with a sour and crunchy pickled garlic and wasabi paste. They have a container of soy sauce at the table too. Good luck finding a parking spot! read more

Super sad to do this but this is not acceptable. Tonight I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry and found a big piece of glass while I was eating. Fantastic like always! Chopstixs is one of all time favorite Japanese restaurants to go to. I want to clarify the sushi here is good, but their reputation comes out of the dinner plates. I love the freshness of the zaru soba here. Another great item is the chicken katsu plate, which always comes fried to perfection. Staff here have always been great and seeing the same faces every time we come in is definitely refreshing. On average the place is usually busy so I'd recommend coming around 3-5. We got incredibly lucky with parking, as one car was about to leave in the back parking lot and we snagged the spot. Service was a bit slow, and we had to wait a while to get water and place orders. The menu has a bit of everything. There are plenty of rice dishes, cold and hot noodles, soup noodles, bento, and sushi rolls to choose from. That was great for us, as everyone ordered something different. I was seriously blown away by their noodle soup selection as there were so many topping options and it was very customizable with your preferred type of broth and noodles. We shared the karaage ($8.95), which was good but I found it a bit on the bland side. For my main, I got the Dragon Roll ($13.95) and the salmon roll ($5.95). Both were good, but I thought the sushi rice was a little bit too soft and sticky. Maybe it was a bit overcooked? My friends got the chicken yakisoba ($11.95), tonkatsu curry rice ($13.95), and the deluxe tempura tonkotsu ramen ($12.95). Everyone enjoyed their food and agreed portions were massive, especially given the price. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a Japanese spot in Convoy! This time the service was good but the food was not the same. What I ordered here compared to the original Chopstix who is completely different and very very poor. I need to look at the menu at the original chopsticks and follow everything they have there if you're going to name it with the same company. I ordered the eel which will serve a completely different than the original chopsticks. Everything was stuck in one bowl, which was not very pleasant to look at, or the quality wasn't as good.
