The food here is awesome. The atmosphere is great, especially when there is live music. I recommend everyone try something different than your usual breakfast while you are here! Came here after a long ride from a week in Park City,Utah. Woke up in the morning and found this place online. When we arrived it seemed to have a hipster, natural , laid back vibe as you would expect from a " Farm Style,Organic" place. The wait time was long about 20-30 minutes but you have free coffee and drinks from the bar as well as live music to entertain you, is that one of your marketing tricks ? :) Anyways, after waiting we were seated and i had ordered the Crab Sandwich which was excellent and fresh along with 3 interesting sauces , my other friends had Corn Beef Hash and the Boar Eggs Benedict which both received positive reactions. Went for breaky- how disappointing! Had heard so many raves from locals about Chow, but strictly mediocre stuff. Started with Spicy Bloody Mary and that was delish, especially the house pickled veggies. Down hill from thereon. I had the corned beef hash- dry and not much flavor in the corned beef and the potatoes seemed like they may have been made the day before. And for 13 bucks, you'd think they could throw in a piece of toast. My wife had the local- underwhelming, to say the least. I will admit they do make a proper poached egg. The kids meals came off as though the chef thought he was cooking for stuffed animals. Better fruit at a Holiday Inn continental. I beg to eat at Chow every time I'm in Bend. They serve delicious, local food with impressive specials. It's worth the wait!

My first visit to CHOW was for bunch with friends. The best part was definitely the flavorful food; I loved the "taters". However, the service was not very good at all. The waiter forgot two out of three drinks, the request for ketchup and he complained about our way of separating the check. A Bloody Mary costs $8.00 and a mimosa was $10! I can't say I will be back anytime soon! read more

I love, love, love the food here. They provide great vegan breakfast options which is why I always stop by when I'm in town. I don't even mind the wait for a table! We know its a busy place and get there early enough so we usually don't have to wait at all or at least not super long. But the service is lacking. For example, this weekend, the very first thing ordered at the table was a cup of black coffee for me and guess what? It was the very last thing to arrive. Everyone else's drinks came (my sisters in a broken tea pot that was leaking everywhere). My waiter forgot, the manager (I think) running around helping kept saying she'd grab me one forgot and finally the employee (with the blue hair) topping off people's coffee heard me say I'd been waiting 30 minutes for a cup of coffee and ran and got a cup, filled it up, bam, finally. He was my hero of the morning. Besides the cup of coffee all our stuff came to the table out of order. Its like food and sides trickled slowly to the table until we finally, FINALLY had everything we ordered. But it took awhile and a lot of reminding of what we still had coming. This isn't an isolated incident either, it seems like every time I'm here something gets forgotten or you have to wait an incredibly long time for a mimosa or tea and tell 3 people before it shows up. I've never been offered a free coffee or even an apology when this happens either. I ate at Birdies the next morning and I realized while there how really nice it is when everyone gets served their meals at the same time and no one forgets your coffee and they even keep stopping by to see if you want a warm up! I must say, that after having read all of the reviews about CHOW, I decided to go there myself. Some of the reviews crack me up-the decor and customers are "too hip". They support local artists, would you prefer that they hired some out of town interior decorator and pass that expense on to the customers? Geez. Coffee was $3 for unlimited refills? Oh no! Local brew from Bellatazza. Even Thump charges you 50 cents per refill. Get over yourself. More than one person asked you how many people were in your party at the door? Holy smokes, you received customer service?? What was CHOW thinking, hiring personable, attentive staff? Did you ask if the orange juice was fresh squeezed? Then, ask who the vendor is. Only one restaurant I know of in Bend squeezes their own orange juice and they certainly charge enough for it. Personally, having been in the business for many years, I think that the clientèle in Bend have become so elitist that nothing will ever be good enough, no matter the restaurant. Also as someone in the industry, I take reviews with one huge salt lick. If you are not satisfied with your experience, ask the staff to do something about it. If you don't, it is your own fault. Don't go on a review site and bash the staff for something you didn't have the guts to fix. CHOW has come up with the best business model in Bend in a very long time. Local and fresh product, local vendors, fresh raised beds on their property. Get it people-fresh, local, fresh, local. Money that gets spent at CHOW gets put back into the local economy, hence, killer local windfalls. D-uh. That being said, I loved CHOW. Omelets that have fresh vegetables? Local meats from Bend? Best crab cakes in Bend? Gluten Free options? Vegan? No problem, they will make you something special, not even on the menu. All Hail CHOW! I don't know of another restaurant in Bend that goes as far for their customers as CHOW does. Judging by the amount of people waiting there on the daily, others agree. Congratulations David, hard earned success is never easy. Never stop taking care of your customers and in turn they will never stop taking care of you. read more

I've had so many amazing meals in Bend over the past eight months that I've had to get stingy with my reviews. The last one was in March, for Ida's (Mmmmmm, Ida's....) Yeah, so, I've had a couple of good breakfasts at the Vic but the food at CHOW is like getting a big, warm, happy hug on the inside! CHOW's portions and prices (and offerings) are spot on. I so love the perpetual freshness of the offerings (both menu and ingredients), especially today when I had lunch with a new acquaintance. The service was prompt, genuinely friendly, but respectful. My veggie sandwich (focaccia, spinach, tomato, mozzarella!!) was not your ordinary "salad sandwich", as my husband would say: flavors were fresh and zippy. But the most amazing part? The side serving of fritters. NOT one bit greasy, but tender, cake-like, sweet and spicy in one bite. Thank GOD there were only three. It was hard to show restraint in front of my new friend (NOTE: actually there were FIVE fritters but, like, I didn't want to admit that I housed the first two so fast). The bottom line is, if you have it in mind to grab a really great breakfast or lunch, head on over to CHOW on Newport! If you're looking for a brunch place on a Sunday, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. The redeeming factors here were the friendliness of the staff--they were fun and relatable--and the awesome live folk music playing out front! A few comments on the management of this place: 1) They were not well prepared for Sunday brunch rush. We were told we could expect a 45-60 minute wait-it was over 75 minutes. Ouch! Especially if you had plans afterward. What made it worse was that we noticed a ton of unused indoor space as well as lot of room for 1-3 more group tables that could have cut down group wait times significantly. 2) The menu online doesn't reflect the actual menu at all, so don't try to plan your order from this menu while waiting. You might try instead to insist on a paper menu even if the staff are hesitant to let you use them while waiting. 3) For all the wait, we were expecting the food to be mind-blowing, but it turned out to merely be so-so. read more

Good food, awful service. Over the course of well over an hour, I spotted our waitress a total of three times. We had to ask different people multiple times for things. But since this is the only time I've ever visited Chow, it's all I have to go by. Let me give you the details of my visit. If you feel I'm being unreasonable, then you should be happy I won't be back. I was visiting friends, and they picked Chow as a way to show off what Bend has to offer. They arrived around 10:15AM and were told the wait would be about 30 minutes. We arrived about 10:20. The wait was actually about 45 minutes. No big deal. We were seated at a table at the far side of the patio. It took at least 20 minutes for our waitress to show up. She was blonde and wore a blue and white striped shirt, if that helps. The table next to us sat down about 15 minutes after us. Their waitress showed up within 5 minutes, so we were waited on at about the same time. We ordered food and drinks, including an orange juice and coffee with cream for one of our party who hadn't gotten coffee while waiting. We didn't see our waitress again for at least another 20+ minutes. Meanwhile the table next to us got drinks in under 10 minutes. We flagged someone down for the coffee, which he brought pretty quickly but without milk or cream. Our waitress finally came with the juice I'd ordered, and we asked again for cream for the coffee. She disappeared again. After another 5-10 minutes, we asked someone else for cream which he brought. Our waitress finally came by with cream and was seemingly startled that we already had some. Hey, it was busy. I understand ... to a point. Before our food arrived, I decided to go to the bathroom. I asked one of the staff - a guy with a reddish beard - where the bathroom was. He replied "in the house" in an abrupt what that seemed to say either "duh, everyone knows that" or "I'm busy, don't bother me". Either way, i went inside and asked someone else who waved me in the right direction. Our food finally came - except for my side order - and things were pretty much okay. (Our waitress was again nowhere to be found, so we tried to retrieve some hot sauce from the wait station. One of the staff said he'd take care of us and disappeared into the house to retrieve some. A few minutes later he brought us the 3-flavor variety of hot sauces. Fine. About 10 minutes into the meal, I flagged down another staff member and asked if he could check on my side order. Someone brought it about 5 minutes later. When we were finished, we managed to find our waitress and get our bill. She took the credit card and disappeared again. When she didn't come back for another 10 minutes or so, we all got up and went to the front where we managed to find her and finish paying. I would have asked to speak to someone about the service, but I didn't want to embarrass my friends (since they picked the restaurant) or take any more time. It's entirely possible that I'm just a difficult customer who expects too much. If that's the case, you should be glad that I won't be back. But if you think my concerns are at all legitimate, all I ask is that you share them with your staff. read more

I stopped by Chow looking for some food to fuel my bicycle journey down the American continents and walked right in without realizing that they were closed. I talked to David a Shawn for a little about my travels and they offered to make me a meal anyway, on the house! Moments later, emerging from the kitchen was a giant triple serving of the most delicious southwestern mac'n'cheese ever. When I was done, they sent me off with a gift card for breakfast the next morning, with which I enjoyed some darn good biscuits & gravy. Thanks guys! read more

We were given a half hour wait estimate, and it took an hour and fifteen minutes. The servers were unapologetic. When our food finally arrived it was underwhelming. My friend's omelette was very small and looked more like an order of potatoes with a side of egg. We left disappointed that we spent so much of our day just waiting here. If you order the most expensive specials and menu items they seem to be a little better about not leaving your meal under the heat lamp for a half hour but there are better places for sure. Just had breakfast at Chow while passing thru Bend on business. Great service, chill ambiance, and outstanding food. I had the corned beef hash and eggs over-easy with a side of their thick-cut multigrain toast. They served the toast with their house-made raspberry jam (really, really good) and some pads of salted butter which were nice and soft. I have had a lot of corned beef hash over the years (I even make my own corned beef from time to time) and I have to say Chow's hash was on point. Big chunks of slivering beef and caramelized onion along side the crispy sweet potatoes. The egg yoke was a great addition to the dish along with the drizzle of reduced balsamic vinegar on the lip of the plate to cut all that fat with a little kick of sweet acidity. My server was cheery and attentive and I would definitely recommend Chow to anyone passing through Bend who is looking for a low key, tasty breakfast. read more

Seems there may have been a bad run for Chow around the time we were there, based on other reviews. A friend recommended it, but the breakfast experience was one of the worst ever, if not the worst ever. It took forever to order. It took even longer for our food to arrive. We were harassed by flies the whole time. The kitchen stereo blared and clashed with the restaurant music. The food was cold and unappetizing. Our neighboring table asked where their food was, and why it took so long to make pancakes and oatmeal. Then they asked for maple syrup twice, because the first serving had hair in it. Someone who may have been the owner apologized profusely to our neighbors for the delay, only to ignore our empty table. It felt like every server knew what was going on and therefore never asked if everything was alright, even when we declined to-go boxes for the plates we had barely touched. I was seriously concerned about getting sick from luke warm runny eggs. I wanted to warn the waiting groups of people that had gathered in the long time it took us to get out of there, but instead just walked off and tried to process what had just happened. I would give Chow a negative star based on the food and service we experienced and had to get that off my chest. read more

Great environment, beautiful day in bend, sat outside. Staff was very friendly. Had the bloody Mary, it was good but nothing out of the ordinary. Had one of their breakfast items, ceasar, it was outstanding. The food overall was exceptional. Our waitress was prompt and friendly but got part of our order wrong and had to be reminded twice about other items we had ordered. The owner came out as we were leaving to make sure all was well. Worst experience ever. 15 minute wait at the bar for a mediocre Bloody Mary. Then sat three guys at a table for two that blocked the entrance to the only restrooms. Then I received a meal that was by my restaurant standards unsatisfactory. Cold undercooked eggs, lukewarm potatoes and a single 3oz over battered portion of chicken fried steak (13.50). we stopped in here because it announced vegan friendly. there are several vegan options indeed, but nothing is labeled as such. this was frustrating but it worked out. we inquired with the host first and the manager had to be consulted about what items could be made vegan. everyone was quite friendly and we found multiple dishes to order. it was surprising after all this vegan consulting that they brought our dishes out with butter. don't expect earth balance here. the pancakes were amazing. the huevos rancheros with tofu was tasty but rather small portions for the price. probably wouldn't get that again. i really can't stress enough how friendly and accommodating folks were though. five stars there for sure, read more

I am a Bendite and I keep wanting to eat there because I love the restaurant space itself. The food, however, is unpredictable--from fabu-delish to so-so. The service is equally unreliable--from horrible to just OK to--is it possible, arrogant? This week I ate there again and again was disappointed. Crab cake sandwich was served on VERY stale bread and the crab cake was mostly bread meal. The bread was so hard, it isn't possible that they didn't know it wasn't fresh when they cut it. Had to fight for my food with the flies buzzing around. Another disappointing visit to Chow. Over-rated and over-priced and under-organized. read more

Great patio & friendly accommodating servers. Our food was great. Terrific "Blackstone"- perfectly poached eggs over bacon, spinach, and thick tomatoes topped with bernaise. Husband loved his crab cake Benedict and daughter was thrilled with her Mickey Mouse Blueberry pancake. Vegetables and fruits tasted fresh out of the garden. I just don't get it with this place. I have eaten here about 3-4 times due to being new to town and hearing it was the bee's knees and also because friends have suggested we go here. I just don't get it. The food is lackluster, the service is HORRENDOUS, and the wait time is unforgiveable. Last time I was there, I was with a group of 5. All of our dishes came out at different times, my dish came out so late that a couple of my friends had already finished eating. I was not compensated for this and the waitress didn't even apologize for my inconvenience. One of my friends ordered over medium eggs and was brought runny, over easy eggs. She sent them back and they brought them back runny again after she specifically asked for not runny eggs. One of the cooks came out and engaged in an argument with her about how they were cooked correctly, just horrible service and we all left with a bad taste in our mouths. best restaurant in bend, hands down. i go here at least once a week and have never been disappointed. have heard some complaints regarding the service, but the only way i have ever experienced that is when we have arrived in the midst of a rush, where the staff was slammed and we had to wait a long time for our food. needless to say, we were immediately informed that there would be a wait, and received our drinks right away. totally worth the wait!!!!!!! read more

What a disappointment. Our experience began when we were told the wait for 2 would be approximately 40 minutes. It turned out to be much, much longer. It was also very frustrating to see people who checked in after us be seated before us. The hostess was a liitle short and rude to customers who approached her asking how much longer. We even saw one group completely turn and walk away! Once seated we only saw our waitress twice....to take our order and pick up our bill (which that alone took 15 mins). That really surprise me because it is such a tiny place. The special french toast (Boston Cream Pie) was barely warm and unmemorable. The Samson was good but not great. The workers seemed stressed. Sorry Chow, we won't be back. Dirty water glass, dirty fork (thanks to the guy with the attitude when I asked for a clean one). Service was unbelievably slow and it was not that crowded. My partner and I had salads -shouldn't have taken that long to prepare. We only drank water and the attitude guy was not interested in refilling without a request - and then only a half fill?? Waitress was pleasant but weird. Just an all around strange vibe. Glad to get outta there and won't be back.
