I'll start this off by saying that after being in the service industry for over 25 years I'm not the biggest fan of yelp. However, after visiting Chow I felt compelled to write this review. I have never been here before today but I will definitely be back! Especially if I can have Lleyton as my server again. What a gem, they are the clear example of what this industry needs more of. Attentive, knowledgeable, quick, aware, all well being equipped with a lovely personality. As a restaurant manager I would be OVER THE MOON to have Lleyton on my team. On to the food, one word excellent! The Bloody Mary is the best I've ever had. Ambiance, quaint, sweet, comfortable. Feels like grandma's house with out the vapor rub. This was my 3rd attempt to eat at Chow. Each time I arrived 20-40 mins before closing (2pm) and was turned away because the kitchen is closed. This past time I entered inside 30 minutes before closing and people were in the dining room eating. The hostess informed the kitchen closed early and the cook came out and said oh it's just 1 I can make him something. The hostess inserted herself between us and continued to say we're not serving anyone new seats. Each encounter the staff wasn't rude but they certainly weren't friendly. Maybe in the future I'll actually eat here but if it's past 1pm, don't bother coming. I hope they update their hours. read more

I got The smash burger, and it is not a smash burger...patties looked like frozen grocery store patties and they were about as unseasoned and flavorless as they could be. Chow was a nice breakfast spot that we stopped at before we headed to Smith Rock one morning. I was deciding between getting the huevos rancheros or the breakfast crabby patty (as a spongebob fan it was tough to resist) but the server recommended the huevos rancheros so that was what I decided to get. They were very flavorful and made even better by their homemade salsas/hot sauces that they brought out. My personal favorite was the habanero carrot one and if they had sold it by the bottle I definitely would have purchased some before we left because it was so delicious. The only con was that the egg yolks were not runny at all as they were very solid and closer to a hard boiled yolk rather than an over easy one and I really enjoy a nice runny yolk when I get poached eggs. The side of potatoes were nice and crisp and I dipped them in the homemade sauces and that was also a great combo as honestly you could put those on anything. Wow, what a spot in Bend. Highly recommend. Tons of outdoor seating. A bit pricey but quality was so good that it didn't matter. You must get the sweet potato fries or the side of crab cake. So good! I can't believe I haven't left a review yet. We've been coming here for many years and always have had a great experience. The weekends get really busy so be prepared to wait outside so dress accordingly. The good news is the wait is definitely worth it as the food and service is always top notch. It's usually just the 2 of us which makes for easier seating, ordering, and overall dining. We've been here with up to 6 people and still had an amazing overall experience but the place is fairly small inside so be prepared to wait for a table and bump elbows a bit; make sure to be friendly with your dining partners. I'd give chow a 10 out of 10 for food quality and originality, 10 for service, and 9 for dining room (just due to size and capacity). read more

Food was good but the wait was longer than predicted even though the restaurant was pretty empty. We waited a long time to get our food, and when it came, things were missing from the meal. We didn't get the missing items for a while after getting our food. Overall, the meal was great, but we were there for an hour and a half for a breakfast meal. Very cozy and homey feel! read more

We literally waited an hour and a half to be seated. Which was fine. It was sort of busy. We decided to wait in line for drinks. That took up about an hour of our wait. The bartender was sooooo damn sloooooow. I've seen old ladies with walkers move faster. While waiting she complained that no one went shopping so she had to do it after work. She was kinda snotty. Once we got our table, we got the food quickly. Our server was super nice. (Lady with tattoos and purple shoes) our food was mediocre at best. Looked like real eggs. That was a plus. But they forgot tomatoes on my food, same with the table next to us who got the same food as me. The thing that ruined the experience was the amount of bee's flying in everyone's faces. We waited an hour to be seated, totally okay as we were a large party. We got our food in a pretty good time considering all the people. We were in the sun and asked for an umbrella and the owner or manager said no, all of our party was served and I didn't get my food, then was brought the wrong thing and about 40 minutes later I finally got my food after our party had already finished their meal prior. They comped 6$ off of a 21$ order VS comping the whole meal. We asked to talk to manager and she told our waitress she was too busy to talk to us. As a manager or owner you should have more respect for your customers regardless of the circumstances behind closed doors. read more

We have been coming here for years. The food is hands down one of the best in town. The staff is always so kind. There will be a wait usually 40 mins plus but it's worth it . My husband loves their Benedict and we love all the specials. This time I tried the carnita breakfast and it was fabulous. We also love that we can bring our dogs . First time in Bend and this restaurant was recommended by a local friend and food magazine. We had a bit of a wait but from the sounds of pervious reviews, got the impression that they are short staffed so we were willing to be patient. So glad we were. I waffled, pun intended on whether to get something sweet or savory. The special bacon lime French toast was spot on. Sweet and savory. Leyton our waiter was great. He really knew the menu and hustled the entire time we were there. I'd give this 5 stars if they upped their coffee game, no lattes, but also appreciate just good food and service! Bathroom review bonus: As a woman of a certain age I frequent a lot of public bathrooms. The cleanliness and overall functionality are worthy of 3 stars but the light hearted signs and multiple mostly empty toilet paper rolls gave me the familiarity of being at home with my kids. It makes me very sad to write this review. If you are a solo diner, do not go to this restaurant. I have been loyal to Chow for many years with our family going regularly and even choosing Chow for the Sunday breakfast after we got married with our wedding party. This weekend, I thought I would treat myself while my family was out of town. I checked in- expecting a wait- and told 25 minutes, which is amazing on a Sunday morning in the summer! After waiting patiently for over an hour and seeing parties that arrived after me already being seated, I asked the host why I wasn't being seated. They let me know that there are actually only four tables in the restaurant that they can seat a party of one at and "don't know what to tell you." Although I don't agree that parties of one should be treated less than others (including parties of two), if they had told me that when I checked in, I would have made a different choice and respected their policy. This is just disappointing that our family will not be returning to Chow. read more

I never write bad reviews, but this was hands down the worst breakfast we've ever had. They were out of everything and they served us bacon that was so burnt you would touch it and it broke apart. The biscuits and gravy were disgusting. The biscuit was hard and dry and the gravy was watery with no flavor. The waitress was doing her best and we left her a good tip, but the cooks were terrible! This was one of the best meals of my life. To start with, even though the restaurant was busy we were seated right away. The inside is adorable and very artsy. The staff was extremely friendly, the hostess, our waitress, the manager, and the gentleman filling our waters were all talkative and kind. The food was amazing. I had a crab cake, and the fried portion was not overwhelming or gross. Usually I hate fried foods but this was wonderful. The slice of bread was thick and delightful, and it was made even better with their jam. I also had cheesy grits with bacon and it was amazing. I could not finish my meal because of the portion sizes, although I desperately tried as the flavors kept tempting me. I will be returning here during my next Bend visit. read more

I was so disappointed this morning. The reviews all were great , I guess they were understaffed. I ordered the huevos rancheros with sweet potatoes. My coffee cup remained empty after the first cup, my breakfast was cold so it was not edible.No one came to check on us or give a refill of coffee until the end of my husband's meal. The place was clean and outdoor seating was available (with socially distance arrangement due to Covid) and the owner was super cool and welcoming! We stopped by here on the way back to Seattle after a week of holiday snowboarding at mt.bachelor and found this brunch place on Yelp and the pictures and reviews convinced us to stop by. We did not regret this decision! We ordered country fried steak, chicken sando, local and crabby patty and it was so delicious! They also had a heater outside which was helpful as the weather was pretty crisp. Also if you have Yelp app and you check in, you get two free coffees for this place! For my birthday in Bend we decided to grab breakfast at Chow! For being short a staff member and dealing with Covid limitations, they sat us in about twenty minutes. Right as we were seated, my eyes started scanning some of the other tables to see if I could get clued in on what to order. What I found in common of many of these tables was a set of three bottles: orange, green and red. Instantly I was transported to the Mission District of San Francisco. I used to buy a jar of salsa and then save the glass bottle. Once I got enough of them, I would experiment making salsas roja, verde... the orange meant habanero (sometimes mine was purple from the red onion) So anyway, it rang true and brought back happy memories, to have homemade series of salsas at your fingertips like that. Breakfast specials were mentioning something like Japanese ribs. I feel like paying above $20 for breakfast isn't really my thing. But if you do, they've got quite a few specials. But personally I settled on "Vinny." No, I'm not sure what that is either, but the menu says it is like Eggs Benedict. (15.50) Thick sliced bread, poached eggs, some of those heavenly salsas, "hollandaise" I think? Some savory sauce for sure. I loved the grits with cheddar and bacon on the side but if you'd like something else, this place gives you options! And the coffee they serve is A+++ fresh brewed from Sister Coffee Company. I have some Sister's Coffee pre-ground in my freezer but apparently when you pre-grind and then freeze your coffee, the flavors don't like that! Just trust me on that one. But they keep it real and fresh. If you just want to keep it simple just order The Local. Two eggs, a protein and one toast plus choice of side. (Cornmeal dusted grilled tomato slices, anyone?) The food at Chow is amazing. This is my go-to brunch spot in Bend. 30-40 minute wait time. The wait staff is less than desirable. The waitress seemed rushed and annoyed by my party of 3. Every time I have dined in the cafe, the wait staff blatantly rush us to leave. The hostess cleared food that I was not finished with and was not knowledgable about the menu. I got the breakfast burrito. Personally I was in the mood for something wrapped in foil that I could eat with one hand, but what I got was much fancier. Also it was huge and solid. Updated Review: Okay, so I'm updating my review because the vegetarian food I did choose was VERY good. Also, maybe the waitress got confused because I asked for a "Vegetarian" menu, rather than a "Vegan" one. Whatever the reason, all of the waitresses/waiters were pretty nice and provided great service for the rest of my time there. Old Review: I just made my order. I asked the waitress about their vegetarian menu (which EVERYONE on Yelp has clearly stated exists), and all she does is tell me she doesn't know anything about it, and leaves it at that. Lol. Can you at least just ask your team if it exists/educate yourself about it? All she seems to care about is rushing to the next table rather than providing an authentic service. A must when you're visiting Bend! The best breakfast for cold mornings! They even have a fireplace indoors! We visited Chow last Monday 10/19/2020 after visiting Smith Rock in Terrebonne, OR. Wait time: 5 min Covid Info 2020: Outdoor/indoor dining available. We were seated indoors. Our waitress was amazing! She seated us in the back next to this gorgeous fireplace! Ordered: Special Menu: Herbivore Omelette, and sweet potatoes. Captain Duane's Country Fried Steak, egg, and sweet potatoes. I've only had country fried steak once! So I thought, why not try it here? It might be different or even better than my first experience! Let me tell you, it definitely surpassed my expectations! The portion was perfect for me and every bite was so satisfying. Wish I'd ask for more gravy! The experience overall was amazing. Our waitress was super fun and she had a positive and bubbly personality! The fire place was the best part because it totally warmed up my back the whole time. It felt like I was getting a welcoming hug from the restaurant :). We stopped by for brunch on the way back to WA after seeing all the great reviews and we're so glad we chose this place. They have ample outdoor seating, some in an open tent with a heater. Our server was great, humorous, helpful, and attentive. Gave us peeks of what a nearby table ordered as he handed it to them and his ingenious idea worked because we ordered: THE LOCAL CRABBY PATTY HONEY TRUFFLE FRIED CHICKEN SANDO CAPTAIN DUANE'S BUTTERMILK COUNTRY FRIED STEAK Side Dishes: CHOW POTATOES CORNMEAL CRUSTED TOMATOES BACON CHEDDAR GRITS ROASTED SWEET POTATOES Not one thing was disappointing! We loved the flavors and textures of all the dishes. My friend was blown away with how perfectly juicy, tender, and tasty her Cornmeal Crusted Tomatoes were, I thought the bacon cheddar grits were delicious (not amazing, but satisfying) and there was real steak in the country friend steak (not burger patty-like). Oh my goodness! This has to be the most charming little restaurant I have ever been to. It definitely is full of character. I hear lines could get pretty long specially on weekends. Thankfully, we were seated immediately when we came for brunch around 1045 yesterday. The ladies were very welcoming, friendly and helpful, we felt like old timers instead of first timers. Food and Bloody Mary were AMAZING! The buttermilk fried steak was soooo good. The bleu cheese on the gravy was scrumptious. I have never seen my husband swoon over food until he had a bite of his crab sando. He was kind enough to give me a tiny bite. It was that good. The sweet potatoes that came with my meal was no ordinary potatoes either and the salad that came with his looked so fresh. Trust me, you have got to try both dishes. Service was wonderful, we never felt neglected. The manager was busy as we walked out and she ran after us just to wish us a good day. It wasn't very crowded but took a long time for service, and the meal was "beh". They prepared an outdoor seating for us and we were immediately seated. The gentleman who waited our table was very nice. He explained thoroughly whenever we had questions about the menu. I had Sampson, which is crab cakes with egg benedict with sweet potato side. I would say it was pretty impressive. The portion was quite large, I think you can share it with another person if you do not normally eat much. Price is a little bit on the pricier side, but it is a brunch place after all.
