I moved to Springfield, from the Bay Area (where the cuisine is incredible,) 1 plus year ago. I've been looking for a great place to eat and just wasn't having much luck. I really wanted to love chow as I'd heard great things about their salads and the location. My problem was that they put the tomato pesto sauce on everything from the chicken sandwich, to the side salad and everything in between, even the veggie sandwich and the Cobb salad. We had a party of 8 so I got to try lots of entrees. What is a sauce that tastes like ragu out of the jar, doing on a Cobb salad and a side salad? The tater tots were good, but everything tasted like truffle oil,including the regular fries and some of the side dishes. As someone who uses truffle oil on most pastas and all batches of homemade popcorn, I didn't think it was possible, until I ate the chow tater tots, to think anyone could use too much truffle oil. Besides the truffle oil overuse and too much ragu, they also have strange salad dressings including a ranch that tastes like horse radish mixed with sour cream (if this has buttercream I missed it) and a "blue cheese balsamic vinaigrette". I appreciate restaurants trying new things, but there is a reason that I've never tried a blue cheese dressing and balsamic vinegar combo anywhere else. Both the blue cheese/balsamic combo and the ranch made my side salad better though, only because even my side salad came drenched in the sun dried tomato pesto sauce hidden in a pile of arugula. I recommend asking specifically to hold the tomato pesto on the side (and this is coming from a girl who has never said no to a pesto and makes it at home out of arugula, spinach, basil and whatever nuts she has laying around all year long). Believe the Yelp photos which show you should order 1) a burger, 2) the amazing Mac and cheese or 3) one of the grilled cheese sandwiches. I had the Brie, Apple bacon grilled cheese and was thrilled with that order, besides the tomato pesto drenched side salad which I could have done without. Part of my 3 star review is I'm not in love with fried food. If fried food is your specialty chow even has fried avocado as an appetizer option and the wings looked good. If you're more of a salad, light sandwich, traditional gastropub eater, head to Planktown, otherwise chow has a lot of hidden gems on a menu that could use some refining, just remember to ask for less tomato pesto/sun dried tomato pairings, and strange home made dressings. read more

This is literally my favorite restaurant in the area. I go here every year on my Birthday and a few other times during the year. The food is amazing and the portions are... generous to say the least. They also have great drinks and a super fun space above the. We for company or private parties. I may not be able to eat here all the time, because I have no impulse control and would probably die of caramelized bacon gluttony, but there are very few places that I literally count the days until we go there there. My fiancé and I went here for the first time last night for date night and I cannot rave about this place enough. To start off when you walk in the atmosphere is fabulous it's cozy, fun and perfect for date night (we sat on the bar side.) All of the waiters and waitresses were very friendly, knowledgeable and amazing. Now for the food (the best part) everything on the menu looked delicious but we started off with some beer cheese soup and chicken wings which were both amazing. The chicken wings were probably the best I've ever had and the beer cheese soup was delicious and definitely tasted like it was made from scratch. I had the special which was a crab and Sausage pasta dish with fresh garlic bread and my fiancé had a burger with Parmesan garlic tater tots. I have delayed this review as I wasn't sure I wanted to take the time to do it but I now I feel that others may appreciate hearing about my experience. I wish I had trusted my instincts that told me not to go but it's where my best friend wanted to go (we do like trying new places). I knew it wasn't going to be good when I saw the menu - I learned long ago that too many options in a small establishment probably meant low quality and I wasn't wrong. Finally decided to order a small salad and tater tots but when I was asked about dipping sauce I asked for ketchup and was told they didn't have ketchup! So I switched and ordered a Caesar salad. Unfortunately the salad tasted like fish (my friend concurred). When I asked the server to take it away and explained why her first reaction was to say that they wouldn't take it off my bill (which I hadn't asked for) but I was startled at her reaction or should I say lack of concern. Needless to say I didn't have lunch that day but I paid and tipped as though I did. My friend later called to talk to the manager (she was stunned as well) and never received a call back. This was a miss from the jump. Sunday noonish.... walk on they are confused as to how to seat a couple..... order coffee and some menus..... we don't have any coffee ready will have to make some is what we are told 20 mins go by no coffee.....no waiter look around from our conversation no one at all. It's now that we start to notice that the only sound we hear is mens voices from way in the back...... get up and walk out never to see our server again.... the weirdest part it didn't even smell like they were cooking smelled like an old dirty bar......the kind like in old Las Vegas that have draft beer for 50 cents in clear plastic cups..... not a good time was had that day...... still wonder what happend to our waiter..... hope he wasn't overwhelmed by coffee fumes or something..... we will never know. read more

The "Everything Burger" is amazing. It is the best burger ever. All the burgers here are great, but it's the best. The Ruthy Melt is super good as well. Black N Blue might be the second best burger. Updating my original review. I've been back to Chow a dozen times. The food is always great. The bartender has mad skills. There are a couple uppity servers, but most are great (shout out to Heather!) and go out of their way to make sure you get the meal you want. Holy cow, Chow serves some serious burgers. 1 star for super attentive service and knowledgable waitstaff. Our server was able to describe the complex specials and answer all of our questions like a pro. 1 star for super quick and delicious drinks, served from Mo's Tavern, next door. I was sold on their special cocktail- rye whiskey with house made ginger brew. Delicious! 1 star for perfectly executed fried items such as appetizers, tots and fries. I highly recommend the fried onion slices, with a delicious cajun spice added to the beer batter. 1 star for the drool worthy, generously sized, perfectly cooked, delectably topped burgers. Beef sourced from Marcola, and ground in house. Add their house bacon for an extra treat. 1 star for not judging either of us for only being able to eat half of our double burgers. Eating half of one of their double burgers is a feat I am proud of. I do remember in my post-chow haze, that the final cost plus a generous tip was definitely pricy, given the experience could be generalized as "burger and drinks." However, given how much I love a good burger, and this is one of the best I've had locally, I'm glad the price will keep this as a special occasion type of option. read more

I was excited to try Chow! I've found the Mom 'n' Pop places that sometimes spring up in unlikely places to be the best (at least at first.) If Chow was a sitcom, it would be one of those fish out of water riches-to-rags shows where the main character is completely oblivious of his surroundings and comes off as too haughty and invariably screws up the simplest of situations. Chow is located in Downtown Springfield right next to the downtown bus station. Other neighbors: a tavern, the discount bread store, a taqueria, a drive-through coffee stand. I'm not coming to this area of town for haute cuisine, folks. In fact, you can play "name that drug" with passers-by as you sit in the restaurant. Our waitress was cheerful and bubbly and eager to please. She was happy to run to the kitchen (or the bar next door) to ask the chef questions. Hopefully her knowledge of what's in the dishes will increase as time goes on. I figured, charging $10-$16 a plate, they must know what they're doing! They must use all organic, local veg and free-range, local meat. I don't know if that's true, it isn't mentioned anywhere on the menu. The menu itself reads like a cooking show challenge, making "upscale" versions of classic comfort food. Unfortunately the kitchen's interpretation is to stick garlic in/on everything. My husband, usually a fan, called this the "Garlic Emporium" in a conversation with friends later. I get that some people are completely passionate about garlic as a seasoning/way of life, but it's such a heavy and overpowering seasoning it can (and usually does) take center-stage, becoming the dominant flavor in everything it touches. My daughter figured she couldn't go wrong with the $9.75 Mac n Cheese. I tried to talk her out of it and into some chicken alfredo, but she's not a huge fan of garlic either- it registers as "spicy" on her palate. We were assured the Mac n Cheese would not be garlicky. When her dish arrived , it was beautifully presented ...and spicy as hell. I couldn't even eat it. The waitress confirmed the spice as pepperjack cheese. It was also liberally sprinkled with pepper. This is not mentioned on the menu, it says something to the effect of 5-cheese blend. In my experience, a 5-cheese blend is usually jack, mozz, cheddar, romano, colby or parm. The waitress was gracious and offered to replace or have it remade, but the spice gave my daughter a tummy-ache. I guess the lack of a kids' section on the menu, or mention that the Mac n Cheese would contain pepperjack should have been a big clue that this is NOT a family restaurant. My husband ordered the tuna melt with extra cheese. The waitress suggested adding the maple bacon for an extra treat. My husband got the garlic bread, thinking it would be a french bread or similar sprinkled with butter and light garlic salt, maybe toasted. No- garlic bread is extremely literal here. The bread itself contained large chunks and slices of fresh garlic- he sweated garlic for DAYS after. The tuna mix, also, seemed to contain diced garlic. Serious, serious garlic overload. Also, at over $13 one of the most expensive garlic..err...tuna melts I've ever seen on a menu. To their credit, the maple bacon was fabulous. I chose the Fish n Chips with salmon, thinking this would be the safest way to go. The batter has, you guessed it, GARLIC. I couldn't taste what otherwise looked like a pretty good piece of fish, even peeling off the breading, it was just saturated. The tartar sauce was *drumroll* garlicky also. I have to say the fish looked cooked perfectly and was neither mushy nor crumbly. I asked for my french fries without seasoning, since the waitress couldn't reliably assure us what it could possibly be seasoned with (garlic??) They were disappointing. No, not due to the lack of garlic. They were touted as "house fries" but looked and tasted like Sysco pre-fab frozen shoestring potatoes. They tasted freezer-burnt and were slightly undercooked. The restaurant is comfortable. Booths, tables, and chairs are new. Silverware and tableware looks like what you'd expect to find in a diner. Water was from the tap and not filtered, but plentiful (here's a carafe- pour your own!) We were alone, so it was fairly quiet with just some Zaidigo and light Jazz playing. The decor was random, doesn't seem to have a theme to the restaurant. It is dimly lit, yet the walls are brightly colored. I was surprised at how long the food took to get to us, for what we ordered. I contemplated about how many stars to give this establishment for a good while. I decided on five because I couldn't think of a better burger in Lane County. Our server Patrick was simply a diamond in the rough of poor service around lane county, he was very charismatic and charming. As I walked in another couple let us know that this place had the best burgers they have ever had on their first time in. I was a little unsure of their opinion at first. But after trying them for myself I was not let down! The ruthy and the Altman burger's were dripping of goodness, but not too messy of course! Ingredients seemed of great quality. Fries were pre-frozen but I did not care much, they were great! Parmesan-Garlic and the Cajun were great. But the garlic shined through and the parmesan stuck well to our fries. After eating here I can't believe how empty it was. If you try this place you will surely go back, I can guarantee that. ( I can only attest to the burgers and fries.) This was a place I really wanted to like. The menu looks good with lots of options that sounded good. I chose the Cheese Burger with Tots and a coworker had a Melt. The meat came out very medium rare. Had I known that going into it, I would have asked them to cook it more or placed an order for something else. Neither one of us ate more than half of our meal (this should have sent up a signal to someone). Apparently this must be the norm as we were not questioned if we liked our meals. And in case your wondering, I refuse to send anything back for being under/over cooked (nothing like an insulted chef). Service otherwise was good and place was clean. We got there around 12:20PM and were the only ones in there for about an hour. Hmmmmmm. Tots were just okay and not full of taste. This is one place I will probably skip on next time as the price is up there and you have options for a whole lot less at lunch time. read more

I am definitely a fan of Chow. Like others, I was skeptical at first. Maybe because of the Springfield location? I dunno. I visited here with a friend who had been raving about the place, so I tried to maintain a neutral perspective going in. I ordered the Ratatouille, he opted for one of the huge burgers with their house made coleslaw. The Ratatouille was, in a word, delicious. It was very spicy, the eggplant was cooked perfectly, and the whole thing was served on a bed of spinach and rice, topped with feta. The menu consisted of a mix of pub food, reinvented in a nice way. There are decadent-looking grilled cheese and burgers, house-special mac and cheese, huge lunch entree salads, and the veggie menu, where I found my ratatouille. All entrees are $11 or under. A great value for a sit-down lunch in the area. Speaking of the area, I didn't realize how close this is to campus. An easy jaunt down east Franklin is probably not that much farther than the Coburg Rd. locations. It was the owner who was serving us, and service was great. It was quiet there, especially at high noon on a Friday. I will definitely be back. read more

Okay, so I was going to complain about my burger. I ordered the Mushroom burger, med. rare, with fries. The burger comes with onion jam which turned out to be sweet and very, very spicey. I found it disappointing since it just overwhelmed what would have been a really good burger. Also, the the restaurant itself is small with just a few tables with basic, wood chairs - the acoustics are awful! So that's the bad. The upside is that there are several other menu choices and Chow has something that so many other places could really use more of these days; they know how to treat their customers. The servers were friendly and efficient and our meal arrived, hot, in a timely manner. Then about 3/4 of the way through our meal, the head cook came out and greeted us. First, he scored some points in asking if I'd like some water for my service dog. I believe in being honest with people, so when he asked how the food was I told him I didn't care for the onion jam and why, he offered to bring me another burger! Since I'd already eaten most of my burger, I declined, thanking him. A couple of minutes later, the server came to our table and told us that the cook would like to buy us desert! I had the chocolate bread pudding, which although may not be for those counting calories, it was awesomely wonderful! Did I mention it was heaven on a plate and I loved it? So, would I go back? I've found Chow a mixed bag lately. I do love the food, the bacon cheeseburger on crack is awesome, as are the hellfries, loaded fries, and their chicken wings are top notch too. However the last two times I've been there the service has not been good. I'm very forgiving of mediocre service, but this was past mediocre and straight into terrible. Drinks ordered but never received, appetizers delivered after the main meal was finished, silverware never provided even after asking, wrong orders delivered, long periods of being ignored while waiting to order, etc. I want to love chow, but two bad services in a row makes it hard. I hope they get it straightened out because the food is top notch and I have no complaints there. But if I'm going to go out and spend my money, I expect to at least have a basic level of service and get what I ordered without having to beg for it. read more

Great service, very outgoing waiter who seemed laid back about customizing orders which was nice. The menu looks fabulous, especially if you love bacon, ham, etc. I need to come back with my husband some time... This time I had the triple decker grilled cheese with a blue cheese pesto. Very good, nice buttery fried bread, just the way I like it. My mother in law enjoyed the Rueben, though she liked my sandwich better. The zucchini fries here are to die for! I always like zucchini fries, but when frozen they can be a little bland and mushy. At Chow they're crisp, fresh, flavorful, and coated in a fabulous slightly cajun tasting beer batter. Chow delivered another exceptional experience last night. Their remodeling is done and looks great and their menu is expanded with lots of yummy sounding new items. We weren't super hungry so we went with a couple of appetizers and delicious drinks. The zucchini fries were out of this world with perfectly crispy golden breading with a slight kick to it and the onion fries were bomb as well. This place has an interesting concept, taking meat to an extreme. It is like the movie "Super Size Me" is playing out in front of you, but with a gourmet, farm to table, twist. We had the ratatouille and the carbonara, classic dishes that were butchered by the kitchen staff. This place kind of puts a gourmet, white trash spin on things that, I think, works for their burgers, which are good, but not for anything else. If your boss, who you don't like, is overweight and you want to get rid of him, take him here for dinner, leave your portable defibrillator at home, the restaurant doesn't have one, but they should. There for an office meeting lunch on Jan 11, 2019. The staff was friendly and things looked clean. Most at the table ordered burgers and fries or tots. All looked delicious and everyone seemed satisfied except me. Unfortunately I ordered the Mexican chili. It was overpowering with smoky spicy flavor and had little texture...no beans or meat. The consistency was more of a sauce or puréed soup. Five small bites in and I had enough. With the big burger and sandwich selections it would be nice to have gluten free buns so we don't have to have the soup again. read more

The waiter was eating food off of customers plates and couldn't listen long enough to bring the right drinks. Zucchini fries were cooked well, but covered in greasy breading that falls off before you take a bite. Meat was cooked wonderfully, but was not ground fresh daily like they claim. Slathered in BBQ sauce hiding the meat. Bacon was all fat, and marinated in gross sauce for way to long making it soggy. Special seasoning of garlic parm fries were nothing more than old shaking parm and garlic salt. Ew. So if you're looking to spending 11-17 a burger and be disappointed then it's prefect. read more

Do not judge this place by the outside or the inside. Chow looks very small from the outside but once you walk in it's pretty decent sized. The inside is decent/nice. They give you real cloth napkins and during dinner there is a candle lit on the table. I tried a specialty burger which was to DIE for. I'm forgetting the name of it but it was the most expensive burger on the menu ringing it at $15.50. (Definitely for the very hungry or easily split for two) My friend and I ended up splitting it. All of their prices are very reasonable. We got the parmesan garlic fries which were also delicious. They have about 4 different choices for fries and it also comes in tots. The meat has never been frozen and is local. Everything taste very fresh. The iced tea was delicious and our server was excellent. Can't wait to go back. Definitely a hidden gem. read more

I liked chow. It wasn't crowded and the high ceiling was kind of nice, it wasn't too hot inside. The appetizers were good, we shared the fried zucchini and the potachos, which are not real nachos but they were alright anyway. They're basically chili-cheese fries. I'm not sure what they're normally like, but the waiter informed us that the chef was trying them with home fries today. My wife and I both thought traditional thin or shoestring fries would be much better with this dish. It needs something crispy, the wedge fries are too thick and starchy for this kind of dish. The spicy Mac n Cheese tasted alright they could include a little less spice (even though I love extremely spicy things normally). It seemed to just be Mac n Cheese with maybe a dash of pepper oil and "cajun seasoning". Unfortunately the cajun seasoning was kind of overwhelming. I did like the rotini pasta and the bacon. Four stars for the friendly service, two stars for the food. We have been twice. First time we got takeout. My husband liked his order, but I had the triple decker grilled cheese. It would have been good, but they drowned the bread in powdered Parmesan which overpowered it and made it unenjoyable. The tots were odd tasting, like they had been fried with something else. Fries were pretty decent. Second time we went we ate in. It was pretty busy. We got the fried mac n cheese which was overly breaded and had too much powdered parmesan on it. I got the the onion burger which tasted bland and heavy with little flavor. I didn't eat it. My husband pulled pork burger which he said was okay. I wish their food was better because the servers are really nice. It just seems like they haven't gotten their flavor combinations down and they really need to ease up on the powdered parmesan. read more

MOST IMPORTANT NOTE: the Chow side of this place is not always open, but the Moe's bar is open for the extended hours posted here. Go for the Garlic Parmesan tots, ask for them crisp, and don't look back. Burgers and toppings vary by taste, but they are pretty reliable and you will end up with a few favorites. The patties aren't heavily seasoned, so going with the burger rare makes the most sense as he tends to go a touch past medium rare if you don't specify what you want. The chef, Mitchell, is very particular about how he likes things (he simply refuses to cut his burgers before they are brought to the table because they will fall apart, for example). He's also been working for 7 days a week for 2 years, so you should get down there before he drops dead: making food this good this consistently is not easy. He also appreciates employing seasoned waiters and waitresses, which I love, or - more to the point - I hate young, insecure, rotating, bushy-tailed waitstaff, and few if any are to be found here. My cardinal restaurant rule is: the food needs to be so good that I don't care about the bill; Chow hits that golden mark 19 times out of 20 (OK, maybe I've only been 15 times, I've lost count). There is no other place in Eugene or Springfield that hits that mark so reliably that has all of the other perks: the seasoned waitstaff, rotating beers, plenty of whisky, and - most importantly - consistent quality food. Just today, 3 of us went in and paid $41 without drinks and with a hefty tip, a high number around here to be sure if you aren't expecting it, and yet I almost forgot the number before I wrote the review. Was it 41 or 42? I don't care in the least: these are gourmet hamburgers, tots, fries, and bread pudding (order the bread pudding up front as an appetizer for a big group just for fun). It's at the end of the Springfield EMX line, which I hesitate to say because the last thing I want is college students invading, but the highish bill may well prevent that. Enjoy the peace and quiet in a great location, and get down there as if your hair is on fire and they have all the water. read more
