We were told by a friend, this is the place to go for steak. We should have ordered the steak. We looked at the menu and said, neither of us have ever tried duck! So we ordered the pickled plate appetizer and smoked duck entree. The pickled vegetables were good but vinegar-y. The duck was incredibly salty. Honestly it tasted like a soft fatty bacon. I always ask locals for recommendations and while visiting the Springfield/Eugene area for work, I was told the downtown area of Springfield had many small restaurants that were all good. I ended up at George and Violets and I was not disappointed! I was greeted by Connor at the bar and he welcomed me to sit at the bar which I almost never do but was so glad I did. I ordered the Tri-tip and tots, and both were awesome. the Tri-tip was cooked perfectly and served with a butter sauce and the tots were perfectly crispy served with 2 dipping sauces but I am not sure what they were but they were good. They have a nice selection of mocktails and I had the lemon/lavender. The decor of the bar was my favorite, I love vintage glass and they had a lovely collection of Fenton, and some slag glass compotes that were adorable. just a warm friendly place to visit. Came here for an anniversary dinner on a Thursday night and had a great time! I wish more people were in the restaurant, when we arrived around 6:45, we were the only people! While it's maybe early for dinner, and a Thursday, only one other couple came during the time we were there. I'd hate to see this place go out of business. The service was great! Our server was very kind and friendly. I loved the salad - so fresh tasting and the dried blueberries were a fun texture for an otherwise crunchy appetizer. We had the ramen and the New York strip which were both great in flavor and well prepared. My only complaints were that the wine glass was not practical- filled to the brim and kept spilling... and that I wish the steak had a bit more char on the outside. This was our third time to G&V's. The other two were good enough for us to decide to take family out for a birthday dinner. The food was decent to start, pickles were tasty. All but one of us ordered the burgers. I ordered mine medium-well as l always do. When the burger arrived, I took a few bites and then realized that it was extremely pink inside, more pink than my counterpart who ordered medium. When the server was notified, she took it back to the kitchen. When the burger came back it was the exact same burger she took the kitchen. All they had done was put ALL of the food (including tots) into the oven to cook longer. My tots were crispy and dry. The burger was way over done, dry and crumbly. When we asked if they had just re-cooked the burger they brought me, the manager said they always re-heat the food when it is sent back. They reheat the already served meat. She then told us it was originally really pink because it was "house ground" meat. While there is *some* truth to that, it would not have been pink all the way through on a medium-well cooked burger even when it is house ground beef. I was honestly taken aback by the whole ordeal. Firstly, it is against food code to take back already eaten food, re-heat it and then reserve it. Secondly, it was so overdone I still didn't get what I ordered. I was given an underdone burger, then given back a baked burger that was so overdone it was dry. And I was charged the $20 full price for it. After the response of the manager, knowing they handle food like this in their kitchen, we will not be back. FWIW, everyone else's food was just okay. Went to George and Violets for dinner tonight after walking thru Springfield block party. We have been several times before and always had great steaks or chops. Tonight we had the chop salad, which we gave a 3 on a scale of 10 and the rock fish piccata which we gave a -2. It was deep fried like fish and chips and harder than a rock . I think this is a good restaurant but they need to take these items down as they definitely diminish the dinning experience and get back to what their good at with more variety of steaks and chops and a Salmon entry as well . read more

We love George and Violets. They have made some changes in the the last year that have really benefited them. The ambiance is fantastic. Date night, dimmed room, elegant. Not stuffy though. Their taste is impeccable for decor. The front booths are a little tight for a large person, but in the back no issues. Their service is always on point. We have managed to call for a tables last minute multiple times and get sat within a reasonable window. The food!!! We were sad when they changed from a steakhouse to a fusion restaurant. But their menu has evolved into this beautiful, quality, flavor packed, and versatile options menu...that includes a couple steaks! This is our go to when we want a steak for sure! Hmm. We were wanting to find fine dining in Springfield, only to be let down. First, upon walking in there was nobody to greet us and we stood there for a few minutes until the bartender told us to grab any table we wanted, only then to find out most of the table were large booths that prevent you from seeing beyond the confines of your dark domain. Second, the place had low ceilings and virtually no windows which gave it a very somber and heavy feel. Third, our bartender who was also acting as our waiter was curt, dismissive, not helpful, and at one point we asked for a side of the sauce which comes with the dish and he said "I don't know if I can make that happen". His whole demeanor was odd and made us uncomfortable. And the last was that a woman who had an air of either being the owner or manager simply dropped the check on our table with no thank you, etc, and once we put our credit card down she simply took it without saying a word, and dropped it off again without saying a word. No thank you, how was your meal, thanks for visiting us, have a nice day, etc. Very weird energy it a dark and seemingly depressing interior and we won't be coming back. Of importance is that the food was simply exceptional and beautifully presented. Food and service were excellent here. Waiter was so attentive with the water and even in bringing the dessert when I had just finished my steak. I had the 40 day dry aged grass fed ribeye with a side of hazelnut miso butter and spicy bone marrow spread. I actually loved the spicy bone marrow spread better than the hazelnut miso butter. The spiciness was very mild like Jack in the box mild. I really liked the spreadable beef fat with focaccia bread as well. Had to order more focaccia to use up the bone marrow spread and hazelnut miso butter. The bone marrow complemented the beef better. The hostess told me the beef is locally grown about 20 miles away and is grass fed and grain finished. The hostess is also the dessert maker and offered to answer any questions about the dessert if I wanted to geek out about it. The presentation of the dessert was beautiful. It consisted of blackberry sorbet, hazelnut toffee pieces which I was informed is a modified version of what the French Laundry and Bouchon uses, bavarois which is milk folded with whipped cream and set with gelatin with dehydrated hibiscus pieces and speculoos. Sorbet was topped with a white chocolate blackberry flavored flower piece with gold leaf accent. Will definitely be back. read more

So many things wrong with what happened in this situation and I never even ate at the restaurant. First, I emailed to make a reservation for our anniversary dinner, arranged childcare, and drove to George and Violet's only to find out they were closed for a family event. I can understand that, but the lack of communication that they would be closed even after they had confirmed our reservation was very disappointing. Then, I reached out by email to let them know of our disappointment of the situation. They graciously offered to make things right by covering the cost of our meal the next go around. I replied quickly letting them know we appreciated the apology, would take them up on their offer, and asked to make a new reservation. They completely ghosted us. I've worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry and unfortunately this is just bad business. We will not be visiting George and Violets. read more

My husband and in-laws and i went again last night- and it's STILL SO DAMN GOOD. Our server was so incredibly nice, (i think her name was Samantha??)- and she made our experience even more fun! The fingerling potato salad was so good we ordered a second round (and then my mom in law tried to interrogate the servers for the recipe, lol). The steaks were incredible. A great place for fancy food and classy atmosphere. Our first time here and we will be back. Nestled in downtown Springfield, you may have a little trouble with parking if you come on the weekend. Oh and make sure to make a reservation. The food was amazing and they have some different seasonal dishes as well. The bar was very reasonably priced and while the food was a tad expensive it was well prepared and tasted great. So very much worth the cost. Make sure to try "what Evan is having" the drink of the day that the bartender Evan made. And as always I suggest letting them tell you what is good but honestly I doubt there is anything on the menu that isn't great. This is now on our list of great date night locations. read more

What an AMAZING culinary experience. We were in town to celebrate our UO grad, Father's Day and an 80th BDay and George and Violets was the perfect spot. Every course was absolutely spectacular. I am a huge carpaccio fan and this was the best I have ever had. We tried it all from the smoked duck breast to the pork chop special and the rib eye. Every bite was perfection. Great steaks, honestly though I never have a problem sitting down without a reservation unless I'm with a friend who is a POC. Then I get told it looks like we're from out of town and get recommended a pizza place. To be clear you don't walk in to a place with $80-150/head pricing expecting pizza so just the recommendation was offensive. I was left with that "i know what the sign says but we really have no vacancies" 50's style extra polite racism you'd expect in springfield but not from anywhere in the last two decades. Their mixed drinks use really low end liquor but have a premium price. I'll stick to the slightly less offensive tavern on main, which also has good steaks and makes much better drinks. read more

My husband had been wanting to try this place even before they opened, after having read a story in the Register-Guard about several new restaurants in downtown opening up. So we were pretty excited, and he picked up a gift certificate (basically Groupon with a different name) for this place too. We went in on Friday evening. I had just had my tattoo sleeve worked on, and so we decided a nice meal would be the perfect end to the evening. The place is bigger than I had expected, and the tables are kind of spread out. So it has a very intimate feel to it. I like that. The building is old, and the floors have no shock absorbing capabilities. So I could hear and feel whenever anyone was walking by our table. This isn't really a big deal, but with a brand new tattoo (like an hour old brand new) I hated this part. Because the movement sent waves of pain straight through my arm. Normally this wouldn't bother me, it was just something I noticed. I elected to drink, given I was in way more pain than I had anticipated. The drink menu was small print and I didn't have my glasses, so I went with a basic double shot of Crown and Diet Pepsi. Which was perfect for me. We started with the crispy sweet potatoes, which were amazing. I could have lived without the pickled carrots on top, but I'm just not a fan of pickled vegetables. The miso dip and the cilantro were perfect with it though. My husband had the ribeye and I had the dry aged ribeye, both cooked medium rare. They were cooked perfectly, and it was kind of fun to have the regular and the dry aged to compare the two flavors. I've always preferred dry aged steak, but my husband hadn't tried it before. He added bacon to his, and there was plenty to share. It was super thick, closer to pork belly than bacon. We both picked the horseradish brown butter and blue cheese butters for our options. I liked the blue cheese the best and he liked the horseradish. For our side dish we picked the macaroni and cheese fried pie and shared it. I loved the sauce that came with this, and dipped my steak in it (accidentally) and it was delicious. We ended the meal with the chai spiced doughnuts and they were tasty. A perfect end to our meal. We had Evan as our server, who was fantastic. Super attentive, gave us recommendations, and chatted with us through the meal. I was definitely impressed with him. I've eaten at places similar to this, where everything is ordered separately, and I like it. It's a fun way to share with everyone and try different things. I do wish they had more veggie options in terms of side dishes, but that's my only criticism. My husband found this way of ordering a bit stranger than I did. Would I return here? Absolutely. I loved everything about it. It was an amazing meal, in a warm and intimate environment, yet casual too. Service was great. I disagree with the lower ratings--I definitely think this place is worth checking out. My husband and I came on a Wednesday night, wasn't too busy but didn't feel empty either. We ended up making a reservation day-of since we weren't sure how busy they'd be (and they can do same day reservations), and they got us in right away. Our server was friendly and helpful, checked in just the right amount of times but not too much. It seems like they tend to have nightly specials that rotate out often, which I think is fun, and we ordered their cheese plate special which was awesome. For food, my husband ordered the ribeye and I ordered the tenderloin--both were great. I was surprised that my favorite of the butters was the miso hazelnut (I had really high expectations for the crab butter, which was good) and would definitely recommend trying that one. One of my favorite dishes was the beet side dish (get it). We also enjoyed our cocktails (bad to the bone and Violet's mule). As far as price, it's definitely on the "nicer night out" end, but reasonable for the quality you get. We will be back to try their cheeseburger sometime and will keep ya updated. read more

Top to bottom a phenomenal experience. Extremely relaxing atmosphere with impeccable service and an amazing bourbon list with the best prices I've personally seen in a very long time. Hopefully I'll be able to come back and give a better review after this place has its bearings... Service: 2 stars. We waited for an hour before receiving our food and our waiter didn't visit our table for 30 minutes after being seated. It was a Wednesday night and the restaurant was full so I'm sure they're still figuring out their staffing. However there was no apology from the staff for the long wait. The host was very polite and seemed to try to help out but it was obvious our table and the tables near us were neglected. FOOD: 4 stars Bread - what bread? I heard there was complimentary bread that never showed up. Ginger Beer - Extremely watered down. With all the brewers in this town there's really no good excuse for this - hoping this was just a bad batch. Caesar Salad - 3 stars. Good flavor you would expect from a scratch made Caesar, but sad portion for the price...they should check take some pointers from Beppe & Giannis. House Bacon Grilled Albacore Tuna - 5 stars for taste and composition, 1 star for the menu description. The description was completely inaccurate unless they served us something else or forgot to change the menu? The tuna was seared and seemed like it had some type of smoke on it? Also the pickled jalapeños were prominent in the dish. Crispy Sweet Potatoes - Nothing creative or unique to warrant $9 for potato wedges with special sour cream. Mac and cheese fried pie - great creativity, like a cross between Mac and cheese and fry bread. This dish felt a little confusing to me...like you should have an empanada type dish as appetizer rather than a side dish? Tenderloin - Excellent. We ordered medium and it was one of the best we've had in Eugene! (King Estate has foie gras on theirs..that's tough to beat) The downside was the extra bacon and shrimp was good but not great (for the price). Dungeness Crab Butter - Delicious!!! Should had foregone the Blue Cheese and gone Dungeness all the way! Cheesecake with smoky crust- This was our first choice, but it was sold out! I'm guessing this would had been the winner. Fig Leaf Anglaise - Flavors were spectacular! I know creme anglaise is a pouring sauce, but would had preferred it had more substance like a custard and not a soup. Chocolate Mousse - Good, what you would hope for. PRICE: 4 stars. With the exception of the Caesar salad, good value overall. The food... oh. My. Lawd! Whoever is behind the flames at this establishment is one talented chef! The service is superb. The staff is kind, but not too pushy... very professional. The gentleman making the cocktails hit spot on with our old fashioned. The desert was absolutely incredible. They make ice cream that is fit for a king. All that being said, the place needs a little esthetic help. The food quality and staff meet the "fine dining" mark without question. But the environment doesn't. I was comfortable, just didn't feel as exclusive as it tasted. The seats need cushions, the pictures and sconces made the theme of the restaurant confusing. The bar looked really nice against what seemed like antique church pews facing each other with a table in between but then the rest of the restaurant had a completely different vibe. I say duplicate that bar area throughout the entire restaurant and you've got one incredible little spot. Overall, I'm very satisfied. I highly recommend the 40 day aged steak. I really wanted to love George and Violets. I love a good steakhouse experience, and after moving back to Eugene I've been searching for one. Unfortunately, the search continues...Service and cocktails were excellent, hence three stars. The calamari was good also - interesting with pistachio and an Asian twist. After that, the menu left a lot to be desired. The steaks were OK, the potato sides were OK, most of the food was just "fine". The menu is somewhat limited, and there isn't a lot of variety in terms of things you can order. There are 6 sides on the menu and 3-4 of them are potatoes. For me, I think the biggest miss is the ambiance, which channels more of a Cracker Barrel vibe rather than a place where an 8oz tenderloin is $60. The exterior looks promising, and then you walk in and sit down at your grandmas kitchen table. It's a miss for me, and I don't see myself returning anytime soon. read more

It was good to see they brought back bread even though my favorite from them is their focaccia.
