I called Chris and told him that I needed new tires and a smog check. He asked that I stop by so he can check out my car. Much to my surprise, I got to shop from a long list of tires. I told him that I usually go to Costco and they include balance, rotate, nitrogen and flat tire. He said that he doesn't include those services with the purchase of the tires. I wasn't surprised but I had hope there was a solution. Anyway, I told him that I was looking for Michelin 720AA with 70k miles warranty. He showed me those and a newer one with a rating of 810AB for 80k miles. I was somewhat happy but would be happier with an AA rating. He showed me Hankook 860AA with 90k miles at a much lower price. That blew my mind that something with high quality can be offered at a low price. He left it up to me to decide what I wanted. Of course, I fell in love with the Hankook. It wasn't until after my decision that he said he's a Hankook dealer and had quarterly quotas to meet. He is definitely not a pushy salesman. Now to address the other issues of balance, rotate, nitrogen and flat tire. Balancing is only necessary if you see the tires are not performing correctly. Rotating is done at every 7k mileage with your oil change. That's like practically free since he charges the same price as my previous mechanic for oil change only. The nitrogen signal never alerts me of low air pressure so it's an unnecessary expense if you maintain your car. Flat tire is $20/tire. When I picked up my car, he told me that he applied dressing to the tires. Not only did he do that but I noticed that he cleaned the wheels as well. This is beyond the scope of work. He treated my car as his own. I'm very satisfied that he answered all my my issues. He's now my new guy for all my mechanic needs. This is one stop shopping. Also, I like the fact that no one smokes, the place looks clean and organized. I highly recommend this place. It deserves a five stars plus. P.S. I think he polished the hood of my car because it looks super shinny like I just had it detailed. read more

I'm from the small-town midwest where car mechanics can't get away with overcharging people, mostly because their only customers are the pastor at church, their own mother, or the "other" mechanic in town. So you can imagine how much I hate combing through Yelp for a repair place in a sprawling metropolis like Los Angeles. Lucky me: Chris runs a small-town shop in the big city. A brief recap of my most recent visit: My car started making a rattling sound somewhere under the hood. I brought it into Chris, turned on the engine for him to take a listen, and right on schedule, the sound isn't there. Not deterred at all, I attempt to describe the sound to Chris: "You know, it sounds kinda like a 'grinding' noise but not sharp, almost like a--like a robot gargling oil mouthwash or something" Chris keeps listening. "But with his mouth closed! His robot mouth is closed! So it sounds kinda muffled." By this point Chris knows he's talking shop with a pro. I'm pretty sure he won't overcharge me now. I asked Chris if he'd keep the car overnight and try again in the morning to see if he can make the sound happen. I got a call the next day, he found the sound, found the source, tightened up a few loose things, and then sent me home with no charge. Free! I love it. He's the best! A few Chris "never's": He's never tried to upsell me anything, he's never ordered a part without calling me first, he's never gone "fishing" for something wrong in the car. I've been coming here for three years they have been nothing but great. I had a car with a lot of problems and I could always trust them to fix it, and do their best to get me the best price on parts and service. Once they even drove over 20 miles to meet me at my work and make sure my car was safe to drive, and wouldn't even let me give them gas money for it. I recommend them to my friends all the time. I am really disappointed to have to write this review. First off, the owner is very nice and they seem like they did very good work. However, I used to work on cars heavily so I know when I am being mislead. The car needed a replacement thermostat with housing and two hoses. They charged quite a bit of time to replace the thermostat with housing and I asked multiple times to show me where the thermostat was replaced and why it took so much time to switch out when the thermostat is right up front and is easily removed with three bolts. The owner kept telling me the thermostat housing was underneath the engine when I know it's on the left front side. I even walked over to the engine with him and asked him to show me where the thermostat was and how they replaced it and they showed me the wrong location. I even pointed right to it and said, "I thought it was right there?" and he said no. Even if the labor time was fair - let's say it took them time to figure out the issue - I am still disappointed by the fact they couldn't give me an accurate answer as to where the thermostat and housing was located. So overall, they did properly diagnose the issue and it looks like they did good work. I am just concerned about the fact after asking many times to show me why it took so much time to replace a thermostat with housing, I was shown the wrong location and told they had to remove a great deal of the engine to get to it when I know in fact this is not the case. I honestly would have been fine with the labor time if they told me they needed the time to diagnose and find the issue. I know these things take time to figure out. I just don't like being told the wrong information when I ask. I am sure they do good work and maybe there was a communication issue here but this is my experience. read more

I wanted to update my review. I've now gone to Chris for all of my car issues. He is absolutely incredible. Last time was for a power issue I had been dealing with when accelerating, I had taken it to someone before without much improvement and figured I would need parts replaced. He instead spent all day troubleshooting/cleaning to avoid having to replace parts, the issue was solved and it drove better than ever! He even called later that day to make sure it helped. I now have my car there again for a new issue, again he has spent all day doing what he can to see if we can fix the issue affordably. He is incredibly honest, sweet, and an amazing mechanic. He will start with whatever he thinks is necessary, and will go from there if there's no improvement- as no matter how good a mechanic is, sometimes issues are going to be trial and error. A side note too for the negative review about the client who called several times-they are extremely busy, thorough, and are always happy to squeeze people in at time of need. I hope that people can be understanding that it may take him more time, but it's clear to me that this is so he can provide the best service to everyone. We are so fortunate to have a reliable, trust worthy, affordable / fair, longtime serving neighborhood mechanic. My husband has been taking his vehicle here for as long as I can remember! We took our 2012 Nissan into the shop last week for a simple oil change and break pad check (only had to replace 1 this time!). I casually mentioned to Chris Jr that we were making sure the car was in tip top shape because my mother (67 years young, not used to "city" driving) is coming to town and will be using it while she's visiting. I defer to my brother and dad when it comes to making decisions regarding my car (and I'm a grown ass woman), so when my car started making a weird squeak every time I hit the brakes and my bro told me "You gotta take it in sis" I almost had a KKW meltdown and cried "I don't know a place in LA!" Cue Chris' Auto. This area of LA has so many different mechanics and car shops, but the reviews for this shop speak for themselves. I called Chris and brought in my car the same day; I picked it up the next day. Turns out the squeaking was from the grooves on the rear brake drums, and the shoes needed to be replaced--it's all French to me, but Chris was gracious enough to explain it to me. When I remarked to my bro that Chris saved my brake drums so I wouldn't need to replace them (saving my broke a$$ some money) my brother told me "Wow that's an honest shop."
