Lovely evening outside enjoying a cocktail while waiting for the lobster feast to be served. Dinner was served in the old barn, which is nice and cozy. Checked out the fireplace and roasting jack, and immediately went outside for a sleigh ride. It was fun, and lasted about 10 min. We headed back in and had some cheese spread and crackers which were good and a drink from the bar. Soon it was time for warm mulled cider and wine. It's cool how they heat them up, with a plunge of a hot poker from the blazing fireplace. The mulled wine was very good. Shortly after the mulled wine the prime ribs came off the roasting jack, the fire built up, and the cauldron put on for the seafood chowder. All the ingredients went in, and people were offered the opportunity to stir it. Things wrapped up downstairs and the crowd headed upstairs to the dining room. I'd say there was ~150 people. Tickets were $90 each. It's communal dining which I typically like. It's cool to talk to different people and see where they come from etc. Not tonight. The person sitting next to us was like a radio you wish you could turn off for 2 hours. Not the restaurant's fault of course, but it did distract from the evening. Bread was served, white bread rolls and sweet potato muffins, I didn't try them but they looked nice. The seafood chowder came out, it was very good. The main course was brought to the tables, it was prime rib, 2 salted roasted potatoes, and a healthy dollop of mashed butternut squash. Unfortunately this is where the real disappointment started for me. My prime rib was so tough that I couldn't cut through it with a steak knife, and raw. I ate one of the potatoes, and it was fine. The butternut squash had thanksgiving type spices and the taste I had of them was nice. The myoglobin from the raw meat turned everything red and watery so I didn't eat apart from that. Dessert was hotel pans of apple pie, I didn't try it. Not being a quitter I took the prime rib home and after cutting off the hard fat with a proper kitchen knife was able to salvage ~4.5 oz. I tried to coax some tenderness into it with a quick sear and it worked. Unfortunately it was livery so into the trash it went. In my humble opinion the experience was very nice, with the food taking a back seat. That said, other people seemed to enjoy their meals, mine may have been the outlier. I won't be back.

Another friend, Pam, had highly recommended Emma Jayne's Restaurant which is only a couple of traffic lights from Trader Joe's - a perfect location for our trip. The restaurant sits just north of Fred the Butcher (next door, literally) for those who frequent that establishment, on Route 9. There is off-street parking. When we arrived at 12:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, the front parking spaces were full. (Note: there may be parking around back; I didn't check) We thought we might have to wait for a table. Wrong! The restaurant is surprisingly spacious with two large rooms furnished with tables that were thoughtful spaced apart. A photo of an adorable young girl, whom we assumed was the dining establishment's namesake, was on the wall. Let me be sure to mention that the ladies room, which smelled faintly of bleach, was spotless. I mean REALLY clean! About the food ... my friend and I shared an appetizer of Fried Calamari. It was an ample portion (took some home) accompanied by sweet chili sauce - a nice change from typical marinara served at other places. However, the calamari was small and overcooked. As a result, what was presented was a plate of small, overly crisp rings of 90% batter. No squid! For our entrees, Barb chose the Chicken Salad Sandwich. She requested that it be served on a pretzel bun (touted as homemade) for which we were hit with an up-charge of $3.50. The chicken salad had grapes and walnuts in it and Barb liked it very much. The up-charged pretzel roll did not appear to be homemade. Very disappointing. Had she known it would be uninspiring, she would have accepted the brioche roll. Macaroni salad - not very exciting - accompanied the sandwich along with a pickle. I love seafood and was torn between ordering the Fish and Chips (halibut) and Lobster Pot Pie (an appetizer). Our server, Drew, gets a gold star for suggesting the second one when I told him I wasn't a big eater. Apparently, the halibut, while highly recommended, is a sizable portion. The pot pie was superb! The rich, creamy sauce was divine. I couldn't eat it all and will enjoy the rest of it for lunch today. Emma Jayne's menu has something for everyone. Our server, Drew, was informative and attentive. While we may make other food choices (skip the calamari and pretzel bun but keep the pot pie), we will definitely return.

There's a parking lot and some gorgeous decor inside. The restrooms are sparkling clean. The service is top-notch and the staff is happy to answer any questions about allergies. I was a big fan of the salmon at Van's and almost went with that at Saigon but was convinced to try something different so I went with the pork. I'm not usually a pork fan but I've had Vietnamese pork before and enjoyed it. The pork here was perfection. I enjoyed my usual small bowl of Shrimp and Pork Wonton Soup ($8.00) with tender dumplings, egg noodles, scallions, cilantro, and crispy shallots in a flavorful broth. Best ever. Upon my recommendation, we both ordered the Shaking Beef, or Bò Lúc Lắc, ($25.) which is a delicious Vietnamese dish of marbled cubes of beef tossed in all the good stuff: soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, a little sugar, butter, garlic, and black pepper. Everything is shaken around in the wok to get a nice all-around sear, hence the name...Shaking Beef! We enjoyed it with Brown Rice instead of Jasmine. Kudos: The cubed filet mignon was cooked perfectly; it was tender and pink in middle. Outstanding! Two reactions: --I did not like the lime dipping sauce because it was very salty (grains of Sea Salt intact)served in a small dish that was on the plate, so next time I will order another type of sauce. However, the beef was flavorful without it. --There were too many sliced red onions and not enough spring onions. Our two orders to go (Pho with Filet and Chicken Wings) were ready when we finished lunch. Grandsons were delighted! Service was efficient and courteous as usual.

We all really enjoyed our meals. Most of us ordered the three taco combo (any three tacos on the menu) and a side of rice and beans! While the tacos are very simple, they are quite tasty. The carnitas pork taco is really tasty, especially with the pickled onions! Yum!! The steak tacos had good flavor, but there was definitely grizzle to be found in them! The chicken was great! All of their tacos are served in a double soft corn taco, which helps them stay together through every bite! Overall, the tacos here are truly authentic, full of Mexican flavors, and perfect to cure any taco craving! Now, the only thing they need is a liquor license to serve some delicious margaritas to wash down the tacos!! . Service was okay. They forgot silverware, so we sat for a bit unable to eat our rice and beans (or add them to the tacos, which is what I do). They also forgot two side of rice and beans, brought one after a reminder, but the final one was never received! We all left full and happy, so that's great! We will definitely go back again! PS. They have a full menu, much more than just tacos!! **We were so hungry that I forgot to take pictures!
