I find myself writing this for the most surprising aspect of the restaurant. What you often don't even thing about. The take out packing. They have it nailed down. If I could give 10 stars I would. First time trying this place, since Im on vacation and finally tried Chubby Cattle so was intrigued about this spot. I ordered the wagyu curry and my daughter ordered the pork tonkatsu curry. Wanted to really try out the wagyu curry since you never see this dish at your typical japanese curry restaurants and man im glad I ordered this. Steak was cooked perfectly, lighter on the cook but it was very moist. The sauce that was on it was tasty as well, similar to teriyaki sauce. Curry was delish as well and it had some beef in it opposed to my daughters dish which was just curry with vegetables. Price was a little steep but after you taste it its damn worth it. My daughter loved her dish as well so when Im back in town this is definately a spot to make a stop for. read more

There are few things I look forward to as much as a visit to Chubby Curry. I love it here, so much so that I find it hard to know where to start a review of this gem... this is THE Japanese curry spot in all of Los Angeles! Parking can be a challenge, South Beverly Drive is usually pretty packed, there is metered parking on the street, and there is a parking structure across the street, I would opt for the structure so you aren't having to watch the clock on a meter. There is sidewalk adjacent patio seating, and then seating in the back that is a bit more intimate, though the place is pretty packed in and I wouldn't expect too much privacy here. The theme is anime, they have figurines displayed throughout the restaurant, and there is usually J-Pop playing. They offer games at the table so you have some entertainment during what is usually a very short wait for food. Now, on to the best part, the menu: So far everything I have tried has been outstanding. They do change the menu up frequently, so don't get too attached to any of the specials. I have to say that my favorites (so far) are the Chicken Katsu Kare, the Tonkatsu Kare, and The Chubby Curry. I have also tried the Udon Know Me, which is served in a small skillet, and is exceptional. Everything here is so delicious... I feel like a kid in a candy store when I am here, I don't know what to eat first! I was excited to check out Chubby Curry during dineLA week. For $35, we got the wagyu dumplings, miso soup, and wagyu beef curry. The dumplings were just okay-- I had some tough pieces on the inside and was expecting a more soft and flavorful filling. The miso soup was great, and our server was so kind to bring out 2 soups despite ordering one dineLA set meal. The wagyu beef curry, however, was underwhelming. The curry was more sweet than spicy, the meat wasn't that tender for being wagyu, and the 2 pieces of charred broccoli as a side were also underwhelming. We decided to order the tonkatsu kare, and it was delicious. The tonkatsu was a little pink for my liking and I didn't feel like sending it back because it took a while to get our food, but it was still very delicious and crunchy. The curry was incredible in this entrée because it had much more flavor and a spicy kick. Additionally, I would've liked to have gotten more of the shaved cabbage on the side-- the amount plated was also very minimal like the broccoli. Overall, I was expecting a bit more from this place, and it wasn't as clean as I would've expected (multiple flies were flying between our table and another table). Chubby Curry was put on my radar from an Instagram post that showed off their great looking food and fun atmosphere! I grabbed a reservation through yelp for a Friday night and was glad I did as it was decently busy when I showed up! I was seated right away with the reservation and the staff was very attentive in taking my order and making sure I got my food! The Waffle fries with the curry Aioli were delicious and I would highly recommend them! The Wagyu beef curry was pretty good, with the chunks of beef being very tender and were easy to break apart when going to eat them! The habanero sauce was very spicy as expected, but still had the nice fruity pepper flavor, and I ended up mixing it all into the curry about half way through to give the curry the nice kick I felt it needed! Purchased a Groupon for their AYCE lunch curry. However upon arrival on a Saturday for lunch, we were informed that the Groupon was only accepted for weekday lunches. This weekday requirement was not stated anywhere on the Groupon. If you love Japanese curry, then this place is a must. I came with a friend and we were quite hungry, and per usual we ordered more than we could eat. We got the Chubby Curry, Chicken Katsu Kare, Wagyu Burger, and Curry Fries. The standout for me was Chicken Katsu Kare. The chicken was very crunchy and the curry was excellent. The Chubby Curry was solid too - it's one of their signature dishes that comes with slow-cooked wagyu. The Wagyu Burger was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and topped with curry aioli and caramelized onions - really good! And the curry fries were crispy and covered in Aonori seasoning. I was so full but couldn't stop eating them. The portions were more than generous, so we had a lot of leftovers. The staff was friendly during our visit. Overall, great experience. Definitely, a place I'd recommend. I'm already planning my next visit to try the Roasted Duck Curry. P.S. I think the reason they call this place Chubby Curry is because it is 100% going to make me CHUBBBBBBY. First off, Japanese Curry is my all time favorite food and so far no one has done it better than the Chubbiest of Curries (At least in LA that I know of) It is located in upscale Beverly Hills, but don't worry the prices here are not atrocious, they're just right. They have a cool low lit space in the back where you can enjoy your meal, or you can sit up front by the windows and get some light. I prefer the cool ambiance of the back of the house. There is usually street parking either on that same road or on the surrounding streets, just check street signs. You can make reservations which might be recommended, though I've never had to wait long to get in. Now to the food, I've had the Chicken Katsu, which is my ultimate favorite and i literally uttered the words "shut up" after i took a bite. I don't know how they do it but this is the best chicken katsu curry i've ever had. I probably could have finished 2 entrees. I also tried the truffle fries which were delicious (duh), the Wagyu Burger which was amazing, and the wagyu dumplings which were also delicious. Table was offered in the back (we were a couple) even when a table in the brighter entrance was given to another couple (table of 4) that was in-front of us. This last time I went they only gave me half a pork cutlets and said to me that it's normal and it's always like that because they serve by size. That's is ridiculous. Food: I was told the servings are small, but they are a good size! The curry fries were great. The sauce used is over the top good, and the fries are tossed in nori flakes, which added a nice flavor. Chubby Curry: wagyu Curry sauce with carrots served with a bowl of rice with charred broccoli. This was pretty good. The Curry itself isn't overpowering. It was rather light with nuanced flavor. Hambagu Stone Pot: a hot stone pot with rice served with Hamburg Steak on top, with a golden egg yolk, charred broccoli, and charred tomatoes. Curry on the side. Make sure to leave the rice alone for a few minutes to develop a nice char. After about 5 min, pour the Curry in and mix. It's nice getting little crispy bits in each bite. The stone bowl does keep it quite hot, so be careful when eating thus. The tomatoes are a bit out of place, IMO, but the acidity helps cut through the curry's richness. I wasn't a fan of the tomatoes personally though (disclaimer: I generally don't like tomato). The restaurant is a bit small, but service was great.
