I am a NFT holder so the discounts that are applied here and their other sister locations are always a huge bonus on top of enjoying amazing food. I came during opening hour, so not busy, no wait. Our server today was again Carson, who has always been super nice and welcoming. He took our order expeditiously, and in no time, our order came out. I was surprised to find that my order came with two pieces of the Chicken Katsu instead of one, as you can see in the image. I am a light eater, so this was way more food than I expected. Chubby Curry is part of what I understand is a growing Chubby Empire: Chubby Cattle (yakiniku), Chubby Nori (sushi), Chubby Bowls (pho), Chubby Burgers, Chubby Chicken, Chubby Chili, Chubby Checkers, Chubby You-Name-It. The storefront is on a block that's both somewhat posh (Rodeo Drive is spitting distance away) and somewhat mundane (it's home to Chipotle, Jersey Mike's, and a true fast food endangered species, Pinkberry). Even on a sunny Beverly Hills summer day, the place is gloomy and cavernous, with walls and ceilings painted a dark chocolate brown. Chubby cubby holes display an array of tchotchkes like anime figurines and gundam toys because... Japan! I might be more impressed were I not immediately stuck in a log jam of customers as soon as I entered. Chubby Curry clearly didn't have adequate coverage on the floor. When I finally got seated after more than ten minutes -- and I was the only dine-in customer waiting -- it took another ten-plus minutes to get my order taken. And it seemed that my order was never actually processed as one of the dozens of checks that kept rolling into the kitchen since, twenty minutes later, I finally heard the one waiter ask if her could get another lunch special after looking my way. So finally, some thirty minutes after sitting down, my lunch finally arrived. I wouldn't have minded quite so much were I not seated at the bar with a view over the open kitchen, where I could see that my order took less than thirty seconds to prepare: scoop of rice on a plate, ladle of premade curry, throw some green onions on, and done. But the time I got my food, I had watched this done dozens of times already, as well as seen many other, much more complex dishes for tables that came in after me get prepared. I had also watched the head chef leave the kitchen to come out and clean tables at one point. Chubby Curry is seriously understaffed, with one harried server attending to a packed restaurant. I couldn't fault him. The kitchen staff also worked like mad. If the owners want to run on limited staffing, then the menu should be trimmed, cutting the time-consuming burgers and sandwiches and complicated udon dishes. As for the all-you-can-eat weekday curry lunch special, it was nothing special. Wagyu is about fat marbling, and it's really only special when it's grilled. Stewing is a cooking method for poor cuts of beef, so why would anyone expect stewed wagyu to be special? (The same goes for wagyu burgers. Once it goes in a meat grinder, it doesn't make a whiff of difference if it's wagyu or not.) The curry was fine, but it's not all that much different from what I make at home with boxed curry roux. I guess I got a decent value for the all-you-can-eat deal, but did it justify a forty-minute wait? Just to get someone to lunch lady out rice and stew from steam trays? In that measure, no. So Chubby Curry has just gotten one customer leaner. read more

I was lucky enough to attend the soft opening event for Chubby Cattle Group NFT holders with a few friends. The service was great and our server was very attentive. Our orders came out in a timely manner and with an open kitchen concept, you can see the chefs prepping/cooking which adds to the overall atmosphere. I had the tonkatsu entree and my fiancee had one of the curry options. The tonkatsu was juicy and had a nice crunch. Fun fact: the piggies are fed ice cream as part of their diet. My group had such a wonderful time at Chubby Curry last night. We came from SGV, so this is a bit of a drive! However, Japanese curry is one of our comfort food so we had to make the trip! The food was utterly decadent and delicious. On top of that, Jason and the other staff members were excellent, and attentive despite having to tend to the entirely full restaurant. I cannot emphasize enough how Jason went above and beyond to make our experience memorable! He even remembered my mother's food restriction at the end of the meal! We were able to make some adjustments, and I am really glad they were able to make it happen. :) We had the following: * Curry Fries - So addictive! I do recommend asking them not adding salt because they are so salty! * Chicken Katsu Kare - Perfect. :) * Stone Pot Wagyu Hambagu - Perfect. :) * Chubby Curry Wagyu Plate - I should note that this does come a bit on the raw side! (REALLY) DON'T BOTHER I was very excited to discover Chubby Curry. Yesterday, a Saturday, I took my boyfriend to Chubby Curry, which I had been excited to try. He's lived in Japan, and was happy to have some curry too. When we arrived, there were no clean tables in the main restaurant area, but a couple near the front windows. We asked them to clean another table for us, and they did. Then one of the servers came to take our drink orders. They "serve" beer, wine and sake. They were out of my two first choices of beer out of the four total choices so we ordered something else. Boyfriend went to wash his hands. In the meantime, another server came back and explained that the restaurant didn't have any chicken. I was going to order chicken, so waited to hear what the options were. I decided to order a hamburger. I asked for it to be cooked well done. The server (maybe an owner?) stood there and explained that the chef would not cook it well done. I was stunned, to say the least. Clarified that despite the fact that we intended to stay and dine at the restaurant - although the restaurant didn't have the ability to serve any of the things that we wanted to order (despite that they are on its online and printed menus) - it would not cook a well-done hamburger. I am still surprised. Clearly, the people in charge do not understand that it is in their interests to serve food rather than to act as though they are superior to their potential customers and refuse to cook a burger to taste. I can't imagine why the owners would take such a position. This is not the only Japanese curry in west Los Angeles. I won't return, nor will my friends patronize it. As a part of the Chubby Nft membership, we were invited to sample Chubby Curry, one of the latest additions to the Chubby restaurant group expanding nationwide. Despite our expectations of a fancy, upscale venue in Beverly Hills, we discovered a cozy restaurant adorned with cool anime figurines on the walls. Parking was convenient, either with nearby street meters or a $5 all-day parking structure across the street after 6pm. Service The entire staff was welcoming and genuinely sought feedback on their dishes, displaying a passion for improving the restaurant. Head Chef Shin, also heading the restaurant Niku X at the Intercontinental Hotel, personally checked on us! A special acknowledgment to Carson for taking care of us that evening as well. For sides CURRY FRIES-8.5 So the sauce of the fries and seasoning were spot on! The flavors really meshed well together and I was left wishing there was more sauce. The only thing that could make this better IMO is the fries. Although crispy waffle fries was great in texture and seasoned well, I think the crispness didn't do a good job at soaking the sauce. Steak fries would've done awesome here. Overall still a good appetizer. Cucumber & Radish Salad- 8 This dish by itself was an 8 but where it was elevated was when the rest of the dishes arrived. This made a great palate cleanser and helped balance other flavors in the table. Main Dishes Chubby Curry-8.5 This is one of their main Curry dish which came out nice and hot in a stone pot. Japanese Curry is a sweeter umami flavor compared to let says an Indian Curry but not by all means inferior. Presentation was alright but I'm thinking to myself how do you make curry very presentable. The flavor was good but I think I wanted to be Wowed and for me it was just a good Curry. The wagyu inside and the carrots were great though. Wagyu Burger-9.5 for texture 8 for flavor The burger features their housemade shokupan bread with a wagyu meat patty, cheese and grilled onions. The texture of the bread and the cook the meat were spot on and everything just melted in my mouth. There was something about the flavor that was missing though cause it didnt feel like I was biting into anything new. Still a good dish though. Chicken tonkatsu Curry- 9 At first glance, the chicken looked a bit pink which I thought it would be undercooked but I was reassured this is how it was meant to be prepared. Took a bite and it felt like I was biting into the wagyu of chickens. Super soft and juicy texture with a nice crisp on the outside. Ofcourse it came with a side of Curry and rice. Overall one of the best dishes of the night! UDONKNOWME- 9 The best dish of the night. Udon noodles with wagyu beef had a great umami flavor . It felt like there was some truffle inside as well cause for some reason I kept wanting more. The udon does a good job at soaking the flavors in. The only thing I would change is I ordered some side items such as thai, Peas and other items on the side but they ended up mixing it all in the udon. One of the chili's was hiding under a big chunk of wagyu and I took a big bite which killed me for 5 mins. Other than that, would highly recommend this dish! We ended the night with homemade matcha white chocolate cookies which is a 10/10. We ate it otw home but kept wanting more after. Make sure to ask for these if they have it. Conclusion Overall, I rate the restaurant a 4.5. The service, ambiance, and ingredient quality were exceptional, but some dishes flavor werent cohesive. Given that this was the soft opening, I believe improvements are more than likely, given the staff's openness to feedback. I look forward to revisiting during its full launch! read more

I got tonkatsu curry for lunch, had to ask for spoon to eat rice with curry. Tonkatsu was delicious, probably one of the best I've ever had in the US. Curry and rice were also cooked beautifully. The rice bowl was pretty but not easy to hold. Basically there's no service here, no one came to me after sitting for quite a while until they asked me to move, I had to ask for spoon so that I can eat, not sure what service I got during my meal, wish I didn't hit the default 18% tip button. I saw a BOGO on the chicken curry on DoorDash and figured I couldn't afford to not try it. The katsu cutlet is extremely tender and perfectly breaded. The rice was solid too. The curry itself was pretty good, I do wish it had a bit stronger curry flavor and was a lot spicier, but that's probably not what the demographic in this area prefers. Admittedly, I am a huge curry lover and eat some form of curry almost every day (Thai, Indian, Japanese, etc) and I am used to very bold curries, so maybe my taste buds are a little fried haha.
