I hadnt been to the Cubby Trout in years since I dont make it back to Elkhart much but I took my parents out to dinner there in late January. The location has changed since I was there last but the food, service and drink/beer selection has also improved since changing locations. Traveling for work I like to visit restaurants that are local favorites. I asked the the desk when I checked into the hotel for suggestions and The Chubby Trout was recommended. It is within a mile of I 80/90 Toll Road. The beer was cold with many choices on draft including microbrews. I was surprised when I found out the on Mondays' Sushi is half price. I had the Tuna Tango which was very flavorful and filling. I wanted to try the Crabby Tuna but was too full to event think about ordering more. I also had Bavarian Pretzel Stick served HOT out of the oven with cheesy beer dip. I didn't have room for dessert but a diner nearby had a delicious Carrot Cake the size of this serving was ginormous. The company at the bar was very friendly. read more

Went for dinner on a Saturday. They open at 4 on Saturdays, we got there at 4:30, already a wait but not long. They have an AWESOME craft beer selection on tap, most of them are locally brewed, which is pretty cool. We had the Calamari fingers and smoked salmon dip for appetizers. Salmon dip was okay, not the best. Calamari fingers were really good! For dinner I got the perch, they were good but the breading was a little over powering, I had a hard time tasting the fish. My husband got the grouper sandwich and it was excellent, great flavor. My dad got the trout, pretty good but the grouper was better! My kids both got the kids chicken fingers and fries, very healthy portion and the chicken was hand breaded... definitely not a frozen item. Good prices seemed to be decent for what you got, some of the draft beer prices were a bit high. I wish I could remember my servers name, she was super nice! Ok, this place is reason enough to stay in Elkhart IN instead of Middlebury. Great food, tasteful rustic decor, great bartender. Yes Maddy was the best. Every recommendation was spot on. The wine, the salad, crab cakes and dessert. I mean I hate tomatoes but eat them as they are good for you. But these cherry tomatoes we're incredible. I am in the area often for work and the Chubby Trout is often recommended by locals. I'll start off by saying the food was phenomenal! The atmosphere is great! Here's where it went south. Right before close we were given our tab. I picked up the bill and left a 15% tip, which is what I felt was deserved based on the frequency of service. Soon after, the waitress, a middle age blonde, came to the table to confront us of the tip. Her exact words were, "gentleman, was there a problem with your service? I was only left a 15% tip." I was absolutely horrified. For one, it was embarrassing in front of colleagues. For two, I think that goes against the basic training of a server. I will NEVER return. The food and restaurant were great but I've never had a more forgetful waitress in my life. She said the sushi might be a wait (it ended up not taking that long) so she asked if we wanted a menu for appetizers. We said yes and one of the people in the party asked for a drink. We never ended up getting the drink or the menus. Later a manager came over and told us that she was gunna get us a free dessert because of the wait (again the wait wasn't really that long but I'll take a free dessert.) We eventually had to remind our waitress about the free dessert. We wanted either the kiwi tart or the chocolate cake but she seemed to have never heard about those items so she talked us into getting the chocolate pie which we didn't really want but it was free so whatever. When we got our bill she charged us for the drink she never gave us. We didnt tell her though because we thought it might be to much of a hassle. Restaurant was good and everyone has bad days. We were in Elkhart for work on our RV. We used the reviews to go to Chubby Trout on a Monday evening. The place was packed! It was Monday night football and half price sushi. Despite the crowd we very quickly were seated and had wonderful service. My husband and I each had a salad. We shared an appetizer of fried cheese curds and cauliflower. It was really delicious. The salads were fresh and the meats tender and well prepared. We had smoked prime rib and grilled chicken.We loved the lightly battered and fried cheese curd and cauliflower were really tender and delicious. I would give Monday nights visit 4 stars, mostly because they were so busy the drinks took forever, and we didn't get water refills.That meal was so good we were all pumped about going back and trying the local fish. After our RV business was resolved we went back for lunch the next day expecting the opportunity to try local lake fish. It was like we were in a totally different restaurant. We were seated promptly, The lunch menu is much smaller. The salads from Monday night were the same price. The lake fish we were planning to get were not on the menu!!! i want to start by saying that i love going to Chubby Trout. my husband and i enjoy coming here to eat every once in awhile. we have never had a bad experience up until we decided to book a reservation for a celebratory dinner this past Saturday. we wanted to have a small dinner party and decided what better place to celebrate with our closest friends and family than a place we genuinely enjoy dining at? well we were highly disappointed .. to start, about 7 of us ordered the crab bisque and every single person was biting into crab shells every bite of soup .. unacceptable for a soup that they charge almost $9 for! the soup was taken off the bills and we were offered soup without the crab. my father in law sat the whole dinner without a refill because our waitresses didn't get refills unless we stopped them to ask them. a couple of us ordered the pretzels for an appetizer and the beer cheese was cold, not even lukewarm just plain cold, the cooks didn't bother to warm it up at all. the second thing that bothered me was that our party was sat in a line ... i would have much rather had us all sat in the back at separate tables so we could have mingled better, i only got to socialize with who was in front of or beside me unless i got up to walk around, super annoying for a celebratory dinner... thirdly, what really upset me: everyone's dinner came out at a different time, which is somewhaunderstandable for a large group but one person didn't even get his dinner until everyone else was done eating, not cool.
