I was craving a good Chicken Fried Steak. Chuckwagon is not the place to go in Lava. Frozen Pattie, overcooked, and globular tasteless gravy over it. No hint of salt or seasoning anywhere on the plate. I left most of the steak on the plate and when I reported it to the waitress, was told it was too late to do anything about it. Sad when a baked potato was the best think on the plate. My husband had fish and chips and he reported it was good. The corn was old canned corn, the "butter" was margarine. Love this place! It is our good to when we visit. Everything is delicious even the oatmeal at breakfast, which is what I always get. The biscuits and gravy is legit - and speaking as a Southerner who grew up on biscuits and gravy. Last night we had some apple pie a la mode and hot chocolate - yummy! The service is fantastic! Great place to eat. Usually love this place. The waitresses need a stern kick in the a$$. Ignored us. Than told us to sit anywhere you would like and promptly told us we can't sit there. Trying to order an appetizer they have all over the walls and menu only to be told they don't fire up the air fryer this early. Ok. Air fryer? Is that hard to start and why have it on the menu. Great spot to grab some comfort food when visiting the hot springs! Good prices and specials, large menu, wonderful hot drinks, cozy vibe, and great service! We had a lovely lunch here. My son got their daily special which was a chili cheese dog and one side - he opted for the side salad. Cleaned his plate and said it was great! He got a hot chocolate for his drink and loved that too. His gf wanted the fried shrimp basket but it was on the "seniors and kids" menu lol - our server was SO nice to us so of course she let her order it. She also got a cup of chili and a cup of coffee - loved it all! They had one of my faves on their menu - taco salad! I couldn't resist - it was absolutely delicious. Their taco shell is fresh fried and nice and crispy - the salad was perfect! And a great portion and flavors. I had a hot mocha for my drink and it was just lovely! Came with ample whip cream in a nice mug. It's a very small town so parking is mostly street parking but we parked at the hot spring parking lot - seems like most people were doing that. I didn't see any signs saying you couldn't. There are a few shops and other cafes along the Main Street - everything is easy to find. Their prices are very good here. They do charge a 3.5% fee for using any credit card but they have a huge sign on the register so it's not a surprise lol - so be aware. My only complaint is that we were too full for dessert bc they have a huge selection - even pecan pie!! Will have to be sure to leave room next time lol. Inside has a retro diner feel. Every staff we interacted with was lovely. We had a great experience. Would definitely come back! read more

Fun concept in a busy part of town. Cute decorations if a bit crowded and busy. Took 45 minutes for our food to arrive, and we only had one refill in that same time period. Watching other people that ordered after us get their food first was a bit disheartening. Many of the others received larger portion sizes than what we ordered. The sliders were tasty and inconsistent. The beef patty on one was three times the size of the third. 2 out of 3 were wonderful and the third was wafer thin and cracker esque. The reason for the high marks was the scone. Which doesn't remind me of a scone but it WAS WONDERFUL. All in all don't eat lunch here unless you have time to burn and are willing to deal with sending food back. But do drop by for a scone. read more

me and my family stopped by chuck wagon for a some breakfast as we were staying near the lava hot springs! this place has such a charm to it and the waiters are delightful. our waiter (k'teean i believe?) was extremely kind and patient with us:). the food was a pretty long wait fyi, took around half an hour but i'd say it's worth it for some homemade goodies. my sister ordered the single pancake and she said it was DELICIOUS. it's massive, for a pretty cheap price. their whipped butter is a bonus. i ordered the french toast combo and boy did it not disappoint. it comes with 2 french toasts, 2 slices of bacon, and an egg of your choice of style. it was so incredibly good. so refreshing! i'd recommend it. my parents had a omelette and a hamburger grilled hamburger steak. the toast they give you before is amazing! the jam is such a utah classic. overall my main points are: * food is amazing. not many very good spots in the lava springs but this one takes the cake. * has a pretty bad wait time, but it's worth it. * friendly staff and cozy environment. 8.9/10!! read more

Food and services were the worst I have ever seen anywhere! Chicken fried steak should be renamed to Crunchy Chicken Fried Steak because it was burnt. My little girl who ordered spaghetti was served after everyone else ate there food she wasn't the last order. We visited Lava on 8/1 and were disappointed. We told the host we had a group of 7 (4 adults, 3 kids). She offered 2 tables or waited 30 minutes for a bigger one. After 40 minutes, she informed us they were busy making 48 hamburgers for the fire station and it would be another 10 minutes. 20 minutes later, she gave us another 10 minutes and told us we had to sit at 2 separate tables. We were astonished and sat down. The food arrived over 20 minutes, with everyone's food arriving at different times. The last plate, the prime rib special ordered medium-rare, arrived intentionally overcooked, clearly grilled on a grill. We complained, but she gave us the worst attitude, so bad that the couple at the next table turned around and told her she was a joke. Other tables had the same issues, and we watched 2 tables walk out (one saying loudly for the staff to hear "F*** this place").There are many nice local restaurants that want your business. Chuck Wagon is not one of them. After reading the reviews and reply's from the owner this is all very common and not changing. It's too bad because this restaurant space could be used by a restaurant who wants to have repeat and happy customers. read more

Service is slow here so be prepared. We were here while visiting the area and omg it took us two hours to get two burgers and two kids meals. The waitress though apologetic was unable to get our stuff out timely. The kitchen was small and backed up and luckily we had entertainment for our kids. Stopped by this restaurant on a whim as we were driving through and it did not disappoint! You get so much food here and the staff is lovely. I had the fried chicken with gravy and a baked potato and they were both delicious. Along with it you get a choice of bread or scone. I had bread and it was practically a whole loaf. You also get a soup or a salad. I had the Mac and cheese soup, which I had never heard of before and it was very enjoyable. We came in with a large party willing to be seated separately. Neither of the server wanted our table ( Maybe they don't like money???) the server who did help us did not make us feel welcome. She told us we should have made a reservation for our large party. Our group was impromptu and this is a vacation location. My table was the first to be seated and the last to put in order. The girls did not seem to be able to anticipated our needs at all, a skill anyone in service should have. As far as the food my burger was way over cooked. Another gal ate one bite of her black beans burger and it was awful. Server never said a word about her not eating her food.. She was running around like a chicken with her head cut off, however she speed hindered her ability to serve anyone. The rest of the food was below average in my opinion. We were in LHS for a few days and decided to try a few of the local eateries. We came for an early morning breakfast, maybe 7ish or so. Several of the local men were having coffee and chatting at a large table nearby, so I shall assume it's a regular gathering place and it does open early. I had a traditional, eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast bfast, my hubby had the loaded hashbrowns. Both came quickly, still nice and hot from the kitchen. Mine came with a locally made raspberry jam that you can buy at the counter. Wow, so good I did just that! Service was quick and friendly. We decided to return in the evening for dinner to try some of their evening fare. It wasn't the same experience, obviously because it's a small town with few places to dine it would be busy in a Friday night. Definitely crowded, though we did find a seat quickly, service was a bit slow. We both had the special. Mine was fish and chips, with corn, coleslaw and a green salad. I didn't know about the small sides or I would have ordered the chowder. My husband had the Alfredo pasta with shrimp and clam chowder. The fish was good, the fries were over seasoned (salty!), corn and coleslaw were okay, but most likely mass produced, the salad was old and wilted. Hubbys shrimp were good, the Alfredo sauce had some weird flavor that detracted from the pasta, and clam chowder was unremarkable. Dinner portions were huge and probably why we saw so many people leaving with take home containers. We also had a beer and a cocktail (canned). On the upside the Scone was awesome! If you don't order anything else, at least try this. With coffee and some of that raspberry jam. It gets busy at certain times of the day, street parking only, but traffic isn't terrible. Prices are decent for being one of the few places in town to have a meal. read more

If there was an option to rate this at zero stars I would. My group of 5 people waited in line for over an hour, my sister checked in with the host 2 times to get an update for our table. We were reassured both times that we were next. The next time the host came out he called for a party that was waiting after us. We stopped him and asked him why we were not being seated and he blatantly lied to us saying that he called our name. We were standing right next to the door, to make it worse he did not apologize, he sat and argued with us. I have never been treated so poorly in a restaurant, I will not be returning. read more

Obviously Lava isn't very big so choices are limited. This is the best restaurant in Lava by far! Charming little country diner. We walked here after our dip in the hot springs, Tressa (our waitress) warmly greeted us at the door. Both of us decided on burgers! I had the Hawaiian burger and it was so yummy, juicy and huge! My partner had the Cowboy burger it was even bigger than mine. He thought it was filling, cooked great and juicy! Tressa was awesome, super attentive and really sweet. I just want to say that I've read some reviews for the Chuck Wagon and was a bit nervous that we would be waiting a long time for our food but that was not the case with our visit! We loved the service and the food was really good! I loved my cowboy burger! I will say that the hostess and our server were awesome! Our server Marylou was an angel sent from heaven! Super great and affordable food! - The Chuck Wagon Restaurant is a super fun spot that is always busy... which is a great sign because all the locals are going. Their menus full of fun and unique gourmet burger options, which is nice to see more then just a burger or a bacon cheeseburger on the menu. All of the food is great and you definitely feel like they have put a lot of work into making the restaurant into a great experience. The one down flaw to the whole experience for me was they have a major fly problem, you have to constantly cover your food to avoid any dive bombers. To paint the picture a little bit more, once our food came out their were easily 50-100 flys on the hanging light fixture above and they were just everywhere. I'm not sure what they would need to do to resolve this but it definitely gives you an uncomfortable feeling. read more

We pass thru Lava Hot Springs about 3 times a year. We ALWAYS schedule our trip to be able to stop for BREAKFAST. Possibly the best in 14 western states. My girlfriends and I came to Lava Hot Springs for a "Moms Night Away" trip. Our hotel was across the street from this place and I read reviews that this place was good. For the most part, it's what you would expect from a diner type restaurant. I really liked the hometown feel of it and our waitress was great. We came for dinner and then breakfast the next morning. I'll start by saying that their seeet potato fries were delicious!! Way good! My friends got their normal fries and they didn't eat them. Go with their sweet potato fries for sure! For dinner I got their special Tri-Tip Dip Sandwich and it just wasn't good. They just put a slab of meat on some ciabatta bread and I ended up havinng to pick out the meat and tear off giant chunks of fat and parts that you don't want on a sandwich. It also was just too thick of a piece of meat to bite through as a sandwich. The next morning I got their French toast and it was ok. Not terrible but also not anything I would get again. read more
