So this is one of my saddest reviews that i have written. Chucks is an iconic Princeton establishment and one that i credit for getting me hooked on the perfect food that is the Buffalo Wing. Oh Chuck, your wings at one point were little fried wonders of deep fried perfection drenched in an elixir known as Buffalo Sauce. The wings weren't too small, nor were they too big. The Sauce was neither too not, nor was it too mild. The Ambience was dreary, but who really cared when they served up wing after delicious wing. I was a young lad back in the late 80s and had the metabolism to enjoy these wings whenever the budget would allow for it. And enjoy them I did. So with Great Fanfare, I returned, like a devotee going back to the Religious Land. I brought my teenage son, who is already an avid fan of Buffalo Wings. I had returned to Chucks. So some things change and some things don't. Chucks literally looks the same inside as it did in 1986. No parachute pants on this man anymore, but the same interior greeted me. The prices have gone up a lot. Over $1/wing is no bargain, but I plunked down my $15 for 14 wings and we quickly decamped nearby and started to dig in. What had changed were...the wings, or at least my memory of them has changed. The wings were fried reasonably well (but could have been a little crispier). However the real let down in these wings was the sauce. It had a puddle of oil on it, but it lacked that salty, vinegary, spicy flavor that makes your mouth pucker just daydreaming about it. The sauce was not very flavorable and didn't have great mouthfeel. We ate about half the wings and threw the rest away. Never to Chucks will I return. read more

Fish and chips are just OK, they use flounder instead of cod. Fillets are pretty thin, like Mrs. Paul frozen fillets. French fries are somewhat soggy rather than crispy. I previously had a cheese steak sandwich and thought it was kind of lean on the amount of meat you get. This was sort of validated today, I was there and a guy ordered cheese steak, when he got it, he said I asked for extra meat, the waiter said that is extra meat. The man was not happy. Today a guy asked for a cup of tap water, the cashier said we don't have tap water. Are you kidding me, a restaurant that does not have tap water. The idea was to force the guy to buy overpriced bottled water. This is a very sleazy, greedy tactic. Parking is real pain, as it is in most of Princeton, you need to use the parking garage next door for a for a fee. Owing to the tough parking, mediocre food, sleazy sales tactics for bottled water, I won't be going back. read more

The wings are deep friend and covered simply a butter and hot sauce but you just love to eat them. Usually buy at least 30.

I got the steak and pepper and cheese fries. It was right off the grill so it was nice and hot. Service was quick so I didn't have to wait long. read more

This is local standard for Buffalo Chicken Wings PERIOD! I moved out of the area YEARS ago and always stop back when I'm in the area. They ARE as good as the Anchor Bar and Duffs (my favorite) in Buffalo, NY. I've tried the other two 'Chucks' locations in Ewing (serves the SMALLEST wings I have ever seen!!!) and in Hamilton but Princeton is the "O.G.". On top of EXCELLENT wings, they serve FRESH French Fries! Yes, if you follow my reviews and I say that the place is t-shirt buying worthy, then it is a mic drop joint! Ordered a cheese steak and we are way too close to Philly for this to be allowed. Poor quality beef, overcooked and about half as much as should be on it. I guess they figure they have to keep materials cheap to sell it to the students, but everyone else should avoid it. read more

I think the quality of the food is very good. However, it's only 3 stars because of the price. The pricing makes no sense. I remember when I first came here it was over $20 for 14 wings, a side of onion rings, and a drink. I went a few weeks ago and it was $30 for just 14 wings and a side of onion rings! I asked if I could get a small side of ranch- the cashier who I am assuming is the owner gave me a snarky look and told me it was 50 cents extra for a very small container. I would probably get much better value if I ate there in person and could use the ranch as I liked. $30 for 14 wings and a side of onion rings is crazy for a take out establishment. The wings were the best part and very good. I liked the sauce, I wish they had more options, but their only one was good. The blue cheese dip was excellent, and they used nice and crunchy celery. The hot dog was way too much bun for the dog. Its like a hoagie roll with a foot long hot dog lazily thrown in there. Maybe if I went chilli and they filled the entire thing it would make sense, but as a plain dog for a kid, no good. Jalapeno poppers were cream cheese, which I love. Curly fries were good. Onion rings... a few were over done but overall not bad. Chicken tenders were like tyson's out of a frozen bag- didn't care for those at all. Caesar salad came with the dressing poured over the top, which was a bummer, but since it wasn't mixed in the salad didn't get too wilted. The flavor was actually really good. The ribs were the worst part of this meal. Small, chewy, fatty, awful sauce, skip those at all costs. read more

The worst cheesesteak I have ever had in my life. I tossed it, I wish I had taken a picture before I did. I guess requesting "peppers and onions" means "no meat" to them. I literally just ate a pepper and onion sandwich with a ton of American cheese. I literally had to open it up to check if there was meat. It was so sparse and a really had to look for it. The sweet potato fries were limp and tasted like freezer burn. The Mac and cheese bites were crispy, but tasteless. I could have gotten a better meal out of the frozen section of the grocery store. It has been a long time since I felt like I completely wasted my money on food. Chuck's... you have inspired that feeling. As a visitor, one would never expect Chuck's Spring Street Cafe to be one of the best restaurants in Princeton. It is off the main streets in a little place that might otherwise resemble a boutique store. At one point owned by one of the infamous Menendez brother, Chuck's seems to have a bit of a cult following. While some may come in and look at the menu, trying to decide what to order, I have one simple suggestion to make....DON'T! Sure, they may offer other items, but everyone in the know sticks to the wings. As with all wings, the key to a great wing is a great sauce. Ensure that the wing is fully covered in sauce in order to maximize the flavor of this delicious treat. While some prefer an extra meaty wing, I like one that provides enough meat while making sure each bite contains a lot of sauce. Chuck's wings do just that and believe me, the sauce is delicious. The sauce has a good consistency and can easily be applied thoroughly to the wings. It has a great classic buffalo flavor while offering some heat, but not being too overpowering. While I cannot put my finger on exactly what makes this sauce so unique and special, I can tell you that it is the best sauce I have ever had and one that I always miss when away from home. I don't understand pricing. 7 wings cost less than half of the price for 14, so if you want 14 wings order two sets of 7 and save a couple of bucks. I've been eating there since Chuck opened it. Except for pricing everything is the same (although I remember at one time that the number of wings was only approximate -- if you asked for 14 you'd often get 16; if you asked for 21 it was usually 26.But not now. 7 = 7 14=14 etc. Hence why the pricing is hard to understand. read more

I have been coming go Chucks for 30 years. Here is when you do not want to come to Chucks: When your on a diet. My relationship with Chucks has changed over the years. As a kid it was an awesome treat and my poor mom had to make sure we were well stocked with TP after a good Chucks wing sitting. In college Chucks was already a place of childhood legend where and after a few drinks what better than to down a few dozen wings. Now when I go I'm cautious and keep it to a dozen only and maybe split that with a friend. Chucks is a right of passage in Princeton. It's more than a simple hole in the wall its right up there with the best Princeton has to offer: Contes, Hogey Haven, and Chucks. This ain't the Peacock Inn Folks. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger. The burger was burnt and inside was dry. Just because I asked it for well done, doesn't mean the meat should be dry and burnt, the meat was tasteless other than dry and burnt. Came here on a weekend for lunch with my boyfriend to re-live his childhood memories in the Princeton area. I can see why this place would be popular amongst younger folk- the restaurant is bare bones, casual, and inexpensive. We ordered 7 buffalo wings (the smallest order of wings possible). For what we paid for, the quality was pretty good! In terms of flavor, they were nothing spectacular. What makes these wings stand out is their freshness- these babies come straight off the fryer for a delectably warm, tender, and saucy experience. Well hellooooo chicken wings! Screw Hooters, THIS is the place for nice and crispy wings and perfectly seasoned wing sauce! I came here for a quick bite before drinks with my fiance (day right after the engagement - to get my new rock dirty!). We were freaking out about budgeting, and so decided on a cheap meal. We ordered a philly cheese steak that was quite possibly the best one I've had out of Philly. The onions weren't overly fried, melted cheese oozing out, nice tasting meat and the best thing about it had to be the bread!! As a carb addict, I can really appreciate a good piece of bread...and this was a fabulous mix of roll and crescent....just fluffy awesome-ness. I ordered the smallest order of wings and some curly fries as a side. As I began to share my wings with my new fiance...I realized that these babies might just come between us......because I no longer wanted to share. They were meaty, juicy, crispy and with just enough sauce to lick your fingers after you were done with the bone. I can honestly say even the celery was the best looking celery I've ever had - I don't think I even put dressing on it! ::gasps:: The curly fries were nothing to rave about, but they were a heaping amount, more than enough for 2 people, it's also BYOB- which I didn't expect bc the place looks like a little pizza joint....but then I forget it's Princeton and people here need their craft beers with their wings. This place has become my favorite place to go in Princeton. It's a quaint little joint that's very straightforward. Walk-in, order at the grill, pay at the register, and the food comes right out. The structure is a little weird to get used to, because you verbally tell the cashier what you ordered and then they ring you up (honor code!), but once you get the hang of it, they seem like trustful people. Ordering at the grill can be a little intimidating too, but they're pretty nice and approachable--just don't be afraid to speak up. If you're coming here, I expect you're getting wings. The ribs are also solid, but the wings is really what his place is about. The first thing that you notice is the price--14 wings for $12, 21 wings for $17.50 (they go up and down in denominations of 7), pretty fantastic for wings compared to most places. The wings come out amazingly quickly (my guess is that they already have them prepared and just throw them in the fryer real quick and then toss them in sauce). The wings range in terms of freshness and tend to run on the smaller side, but trust me, they will fill you up. My girlfriend and I regularly split 21 wings and it's more than enough for us. They also come with a generous amount of celery sticks and 2 containers of bleu cheese. There's something really special about the buffalo sauce here. They really drench your wings with it, which I love. The sauce is not as thick as normal buffalo sauce (I assume they make it themselves)... it pools at the bottom of the plate, which makes it a good dipping sauce for anything else that you might order. The sauce is plenty spicy, but it's also a bit sweet? It's pretty addicting--once I started coming here regularly, it took me a while to stop (I was coming like 3 times a week). If you want to try the ribs, I have to warn you it's a ton of meat for a low price, so be careful not to get too many. Definitely less than 5 per person will already fill you up a ton. The flavor is pretty nice, and they really lather on the BBQ sauce, so it's nice and juicy and tangy. As for the sides, I've had the curly fries, mozzarella sticks, regular fries, and breaded mushrooms. The mushrooms were pretty meh... really watery inside of the breading. The regular fries are super thick, but I like to beat them down by drizzling my excess buffalo sauce and dip onto it (bit of an homage to George's/Hoagie). The curly fries are really solid--I'd recommend them if you're a fry lover in general. I usually get the mozzarella sticks because I love mozzarella sticks in general, and the ones here are solid. Also the price is good: 6 sticks for $4. Again, the place can be intimidating at first, but once you come here a couple of times, it's actually a super friendly and relaxed environment to be in. Pretty soon, you'll have the hang of the ordering process, and then you just sit and watch basketball reruns, taking a break from everything else for a half hour. Okay people of New Jersey if you haven't tried this place yet what are you all waiting on. I was told about this place by one of the gentleman at Nassau Street Seafood & Produce Co. I order the 7 piece wings with the spicy sauce and celery sticks. Outside of my own these were the best wings that I've eaten in the longest time. They were crispy yet tender and the sauce was hot but not to hot. The celery sticks were pretty good. If I'm to ever come back to this area again I'll make a point to come back. Another Princeton classic! Been coming here for over 10 years and this place some of the best wings you can get anywhere in NJ. It's a small place that looks and smells like a large bathroom, but the wings? By far, the best around. The key however is to get and eat them while they're hot. It's completely different taste when you let them sit for a while and then eat them or reheat them. The sauce is delicious and the wings are nice and small with no breading. It's easy to eat 20-30 of these things without realizing what you just did. There that good. Had to run out for a corkscrew while waiting for the food, humoured by the terrible effects of the new Knight Rider on the TV. Ribs: Incredible. Fell off the bone--so tender that even some of the bones were probably edible. One of the few ketchup-based sauces I liked--not too sweet, almost tamarind-like without the harsh nose effect. Crabcakes: good. Crispy. A little mushy for my tastes, but good none-the-less. Served with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and tartar sauce. Order, pay, then sit. Food delivered when it's ready. 5 ribs and 2 crabcakes: $15 with tax, +$3 for the tip jar. Friendly people, incredible food. YUM The movie was good too, although we probably laughed louder than anyone else. UPDATE: awesome wings. We had them to go (less than $9 for 14 wings). Love this place. read more

A great hole in the wall place that serves classic hot wings with ranch and celery! We ordered a platter of 15 for $12 and devoured it all up. They don't bread the wings before they fry them, so this is a great option for those trying to cut down on carbs. They serve the wings on plastic plates and accidentally gave us 2 extra wings (win!). This place is a must-have at Princeton along with Hoagie Haven. Like Kevin M. said, it's a Princeton classic! I came after hearing about their wings and Philly Cheese Steak. I've only had the wings here and they are phenomenal. These wings are so good it's not even real. I don't even know how to describe the sauce. It's like a salty, sour buffalo wings flavor with a kick. It's exactly what you expect, but somehow, on a different level of savory. Had a crabcake sandwich. It was just ok. Served basically plain on a white roll with tartar sauce. Didn't have much flavor besides the chopped up bell peppers in it - they were chopped rather large which I think took away from the crab quite a bit. I'll be back to try the wings sometime. read more

I love coming here with my daughter for a great Saturday afternoon snack. She loves their chicken nuggets and I like any of their chicken items on the menu (nuggets, Caesar wrap, wings, buffalo sandwich, etc).
