It's a real pleasure to stop in here for lunch or a snack, because there's a huge variety of rib-sticking sandwiches and wings, all served up fast and friendly. Great vegetarian options as well as mega-carnivore options. You want meat dripping with meat? They got you. You want a perfectly seasoned grilled vegetable panini with a blanket of fresh melted cheese? On it. Falafels, gyros, burgers, fries, etc. One of the things I most appreciate is the great selection of chips. They have flavors of kettle chips I haven't found anywhere else, as well as the classics. I ordered a spicy Italian sub and it wasn't spicy at all. Despite the great service and friendly atmosphere, the sub was tasteless. I also ordered a pickle which had no pickle taste ie.... A coworker told me about this spot, so I checked it out a few times while getting my oil changed down the road. The few times I went there, I enjoyed my sandwich and thought it was good value. Small sandwich shop with a handful of tables, and prices are pretty affordable. Everything else you might want to grab is extra, like most sub shops. Ray's Sub Shop on Pennington Road in Ewing, NJ mainly serves the college crowd from the College of New Jersey up the street from there. It is a small store with six tables and a substantial menu of sandwiches, wraps, subs, burgers, etc. There are several lunch specials available daily which make for an economical meal. They use Dietz & Watson delicatessen smoked meats and cheeses, and pretty good hoagie rolls. My honey turkey and swiss submarine was large and tasty, with plenty of meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato. I nixed the onions. I couldn't finish it. No complaints. With a bottle of Stewart's, it came to about $8. Good price. The only downside happened when I went to the cashier in the rear of the store, and looked over at the small grill used to prepare the hot sandwiches and burgers. It was very dirty, and actually left an unpleasant odor in that part of the joint. I would not be ordering anything that required time on that hot iron. Too, the sole garbage container was overfull when I tried to put my trash in it. Someone should be watching for that and replace the trash bags before this happens. More attention to detail would go a long way. 2.5 Stars, because cleanliness is important. read more

Place is a really really solid deli. I work out here when I have to travel to one of our warehouses for work and rays is the only good sandwiches I've found out here. The spicy cheese they do is real good and overall just as good as any deli I've had at home in Philly. read more

I tried Ray's for the first time a few weeks ago and was impressed. I'm typically not a huge sub person, but their Italian was GREAT! Quality meats and cheese and fresh ingredients, plus they are extremely well priced. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because is takes way too long for service! I waited 15 minutes to order with no one in the store ahead of me, although, the staff are very friendly for locals. I'll definitely be returning, but this time I'll call ahead or just use the delivery service. The subs are too good to not keep going back. UPDATE This time when I ordered lunch, I ordered it at 10am for delivery at 12 with specific instructions for the address. I did receive a call at noon from an office on our campus to say they dropped it off and just walked away. Between this issue and the molded rice pudding we received, I just don't feel like the Italian (which is still great) is great enough to make up for the rest of the service and lack of quality and the reason why I've change my review. read more

My coworker hadn't been in there for a long time but she recalled the sandwiches and subs being excellent. Apparently she had noticed the change of workers there. She seemed to think the place was taken over by some new folks. We were the first inside and she placed her order round 1030-11am It took 20 minutes before she had to ask where her sandwiches were. They were sitting on the counter and no one said anything to us. They got busy when a hand full of other patrons came in at the time the sandwiches SHOULD have been done. All I can say is that if it takes that long to make sandwich, you have some serious issues. She originally ordered something they said they were out of. What the....so how you going to be out of something on a Monday? That's when you get fully stocked in most places. What a bummer because the hanging wall menu looked good. Just not worth it plus my coworker wasn't impressed like she used to be about the taste. It will be a strong loss of business before it even begins since the workers in the area are increasing by several with not only my group but the airline folks etc. I won't recommend. This is a tough one. First of all, the food here is great. Typical sub shop but the food is above par and they have really good prices. The owner Ray is super nice too. Just have to give 2 stars tho because, as a few other reviewers have pointed out, a couple of the women taking orders and making subs are just extremely rude. If you politely ask a question you get this look like you are a complete idiot and a quick rude answer. Literally seems like a chore for them to take your order and make it. If you don't like dealing with people you should not have this job. I'm assuming they are family or friends of Ray's because it is so blatantly obvious how poor their customer service is yet nothing is done to correct it. One time I came in over 30 min before close, open sign on and everything, and this woman turned me and a separate customer away saying they were closed when they clearly were not. Was very obvious she just did not feel like helping us. Great food but sadly don't think I'll be going back. Other great options within not even 1-2 miles where management teach their employees how to treat customers respectfully. read more

Used to love Rays..was a customer for 10 years...Ordered sandwiches to be delivered and did not receive the correct order..I called 2 times and they refused to make a new sandwich and instead offered a 10% discount for next order..when I explained again that the order was wrong and not what I paid for, he replied that if I brought my sandwich in that he would "fix it" I told him that I didn't want a "fixed" sandwich but rather a new sandwich that reflected what I ordered. She liked it but said she would probably try something different--wanted more veggies on it. I got the garlic bread cheesesteak. Ray's is a local favorite amoung Ewing residents and TCNJ students alike, and for good reason. While the parking lot and inside can get a little crowded during peak hours, the food and (I can't believe that I'm saying this about a sub place) service are fantastic. After just two visits, the workers knew my order, and when they saw me reaching for a drink that was just placed into the fridge, they handed me a cold one. Friendly service aside, the food is really good. The belly busters are huge, and my personal favorite is their Italian sandwich. They cut their lettuce and onions really thin, just like they should be, and they are generous with their meat. The bread is also always fresh, and I like their cheesestaeaks too. Best yet, they have a $5 foot long special with the purchase of a drink. I highly recommend checking out this gem of you're hungry and in the area. read more

Ray's has pretty good sandwiches. They best in my opinion is the steak on garlic. The prices a fair and is a real sandwich shop, not like the more mainstream chains. I want to call the previous reviewers delusional and harass them for reviewing Ray's so positively, but I just can't. There used to be a time where I got so excited because the portions were great and the prices were great. This time was five years ago, unfortunately. I don't know if they just had a few too many poor experiences with college kids or rude customers that left a bad taste in my mouth, but you get pretty poor service from the moment you come in. Things used to not be like this. I can handle bad service, but the last few times I went I ordered my usual Italian or Turkey belly buster and it came with the same amount of meat as a regular sandwich. On top of this, it was on a large loaf of bread that was stale (one of the times I went was lunch time, so it's not even like it was the end of the night and I got bad bread). I talked to my woman about Ray's - all she had to add was that her friend got food poisoning from them 5 years ago. If you spent any time in this shop, that's no surprise to you. Because of TCNJ and Rider, the Ewing area is pretty flush with other sandwich places. The best one is Tastees in Lawrenceville, just go there and give me a 'Useful' vote when you do as thanks. read more

I don't know what to say except thanks, Ray's! I volunteered to get sandwiches for a crew of 13 and my Trenton go-to place was closed. I found Ray's via a Yelp search and helpful reviews decided me to try it. Got double foot long sandwiches with a variety of fillings including Cheesesteak and a mozzarella L&T. Everything was great but the Cheesesteak was in a class by itself, so tasty! The order was ready in under 10 minutes too. Just wow! Our crew ate good and felt happy. read more

Rays has always been one of my favorite sub places. Ewing has several of them as well - so you know it's quality! Their signature belly-busters are a particular favorite, but their hot subs are amazing too. After they switched ownership, they stopped loading the subs up with quite as much meat - but maybe that's a good thing to make a more-balanced sandwich? Ordered here for the first time. I called to see if they offered delivery and the person who answered said yes but I have to order online. So I had to place my order via GrubHub, which was linked on their website. Ordering was pretty easy no issues there. My issue is that they take an hour to deliver. This place is less than 5 miles from my office, but yet it was over an hour. I can say that they did get all of the orders correct. If the food was hot I'm sure it would have been good. Cold breakfast food is disgusting. Not even worth calling them about it - just threw it out. read more

The FOOD here is AWESOME, but the SERVICE AND DELIVERY SUCKS - from talking to someone over the phone to the delivery time. The estimated time of arrival provided is always extended and even then the food arrives later then the extended time. When you call about the delivery the phone number either does not work or the person you get on the phone is absolutely no help and can never provide you with an estimated time of arrival after already waiting over an hour. If you can match the quality of your service with the quality of your food this would be a very good place to order from for an even bigger venue or office event but I wouldn't recommend when ordering for my team!!! read more

I have been to Ray's Subs several times and never have they gotten my order right. Now, this isn't to say that they can't make a good sandwich, but I regularly have to return to the counter to request the staff to add an item they omitted from my sandwich. The quality of the sandwiches are also just ok, not terrible, but not stellar. Really, the service is the reason I would not recommend Ray's to a friend. When I order Turkey, Swiss, Tomato, Lettuce, and Mayo, I expect a sandwich with all of those items. Somehow, one or two never make it to my sandwich when I order at Ray's. There are plenty of sub shops in the area that have superior service to Ray's. I would recommend any other sub shop in the Ewing area before recommending Ray's. read more

I feel super lucky that Ray's is the closest place for me to get a deli sandwich. I started going here for lunch about six months ago, and I keep going back because it's really tasty and the service is great. I'm not alone--there always seems to be an odd but friendly mix of people taking out or eating in at the jumble of wobbly tables. The menu is actually pretty big, and includes breakfast plates in the mornings, although I've only ever had cold subs. Ray's has a grill so there are a lot of hot food offerings, in addition to your basic hoagies and subs. The "half" size cold subs are enough for two people, but they only cost $4-6. They advertise vegetarian options (veggie subs, falafel sandwiches) so if that's how you "roll" (sorry), you're welcome here, too. Once I saw a cop eating a cheesesteak platter with fries and it looked awesome. Ray's serves steak fries (the big flat ones) not the coated crap a lot of places shame themselves with these days. They use hoagie rolls from Italian People's Bakery, which are pretty good. The overall vibe of the place is pretty homely, but I like it a lot. If I could make one improvement, it would be a fountain RC machine! read more

Pretty upset with my order. At work, we're really hungry but on an important time-sensitive project. So, we order delivery from Ray's Subs. 4 sandwiches, a couple sides and drinks. Not all that hard, even with the few special requests we had. I ordered a British burger - no bun. Ordered it rare this time, because last time I ordered it medium rare...and it was well done. FYI: so is "rare"... They did leave off the bun and it is a tasty burger, if too well done. Also ordered was a prosciutto di parma panini - requested tomatoes on it. Nope. No tomatoes. Ordered a cheesesteak combo, with ketchup and mayo on the side. Nope, no ketchup and mayo - not on the side, not in the bag - not at all. We scrounged in desks and came up with a mustard, a ketchup, and 2 mayo packets - all of which had seen better days. In addition to that specific request, we also requested the "condiments and paper plate and plastic utensils for 3"...we got about 10 paper plates, no utensils, you already know no condiments... Ordered 2 ginger ales and a coke. Received 2 cokes and a sprite. Annoying as hell since one was for me and I can't have colas. Neither could the other Ginger Ale orderer - so we're sharing the sprite. Ordered a gyro combo. No tzaziki that we can see. Looks like dry lamb with lettuce on pita. I also ordered a side of cole slaw. That was correct! The kicker? I gave a 20% tip when I placed the order. You already know your tip is decent...and, you still screw me over. I'll give 2 stars; the burger was tasty, I hear the fries were tasty, and the cole slaw was also good. If we do order from them again, I won't be giving a tip up front. More likely, I'll be the one suggesting we try someplace new. read more

I've had Ray's Sub Shop once before and had a spectacular 5 star experience, the second time around my order was over an hour late, the order was not correct, and the chicken cutlet sandwich I ordered was the worst sandwich I ever had in my life.
