If pulling up in your boat or walking from the Abbey...This is the bar to stop in. The bar food is reasonable and the Bloody Mary's are to die for. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, it is as if time stands still in this bar....No sounds of traffic, buses, no gang members, no Urban influences...just peace, patience and time. If you have children they are welcome as longs as you tend to them or at least watch them from the bar stool while they play on video games that are visible from the bar. Old Ponytail bartender guy was a complete tool. Took my ID because he thought it was fake, but instead of checking it and apologizing for his mistake and bringing it over to us he went to the back room for 20 minutes and left my ID behind the bar. Thought I was being pranked. Most of the bartender staff were major tools too. I would rather go to the Owl 100 times before this dump. I don't know who this Chuck guy is and I don't want to tell him how to run his bar, but I'd start by getting rid of these tools. The bus boys and door man were great and actually polite. Waitress (only one waitress working- but there was only about six tables filled) was so terrible that I don't plan on coming back. My mom was literally confused whether or not we were supposed to order food/drink inside. After being passed over four times, I went inside to order at bar. Great place to stop for a view of the lake, beers, and snacks. Clark and I ate lunch here in January and were pleased! We shared a pitcher of Spotted Cow and some cheese curds (because Wisconsin). I got the fish and chips and he got the chicken tenders. The cheese curds had almost too much breading on them - they were really crunchy. Not how I prefer my cheese curds, but I'm also not a seasoned Wisconsin resident. The fish and chips came out SUPER hot, I mean probably straight from the fryer. Really liked the breading on these! After seeing others reviews about having no servers and people being confused about the service there, I was bracing for impact. However, the bartender couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating and informative. The bussers were incredibly efficient and we didn't wait long for our food at all. This is one of the coolest dive bars - on the shores of Lake Geneva, in beautiful Fontana Wisconsin. Three reasons: (1) You can hang out here in your bathing suit - not too many places in the midwest where that is allowable. Everyone comes here from their boats and drinks. That reads cool to me! (2) Soakers - They are the only place in the world that I have ever seen this on their menu - something that I would eat, heaped with guilt, as a child! Seriously, dunking french bread into Italian beef gravy is about as good as it gets - and they actually serve this here on their menu! Hello! (3) Purple koolaid drinks - unbelievably good! Two cons: when the play bands, they charge cover and sometimes on summer weekends, it can be packed to the brim and harder to get a drink or table. Both cons are with good reason. Awful service. Can't even review the food since we didn't get a chance to eat. Showed up on a Wednesday evening, sat at a table and no one spoke to us. There were a handful of people at the bar and one other group at a table. One worker came to the table areas a few times to clean up but never said anything to us. We were very anxious to try it out. Then again, they had a sign up that said loud and inappropriate behavior from kids wouldn't be tolerated. Interesting for such a sign to be located in a tavern of drunk adults. On our way out, one of the bar patron's golden retriever ran into the building. Really great to allow a dog into your restaurant, but not acknowledge the guests there trying to eat. Totally a cute spot in Fontana... right on the water and the service is really chill and laid back. Great view of the lake and the crowd definitely seems cool. The only set backs for myself was that you have to order your own food and drink at the bar, but then they bring out your food. Just find it odd to have a real restaurant but no real servers/waiters. Then, everything is Ala carte - fries, chips, etc. And they are kind of expensive in my opinion, but that's typical of the area. My cajun chicken sandwich, however, was pretty freaking good. Really juicy without an overabundance of mayo on it. Ate there for lunch on a Sunday. We were tired so we wanted to sit and rest. Then we found out you had to go to the bar and order your food. Hummmmmm, not what we expected. Food was good but if you wanted something else a refill, burger not done enough etc ... Back to the bar you go. Nice location, good view, food was ok. If you don't mind their system you may like it. Totally not a dive. Not totally upscale, certainly, but far from a dive. On the contrary, it's quite the Lake Geneva-area institution. And in the winter, it turns into the best neighborhood bar I've ever been a regular at. In the summer, it's gorgeous and quite popular. I heart Chucks. So casual and relaxed and right on the water. There is nothing better than parking your boat, walking over, and enjoying some drinks and food with friends and family. Wear your bathing suit, flipflops, wetsuit, nobody cares! They have a patio outside as well, which is nice (for you and for them) if you are dripping wet. In the summer, it gets insanely crowded. This is bad if you want to order food. I would not suggest coming on a saturday/sunday/holiday weekend/any day in the summer with nice weather to order food, as you will wait at least 1 hour. But the drinks flow with little wait and the people watching is second-to-none. Families, young couples, townies, grandparents, babies, you have it all. If you want food, come in the winter. Be sure to order one thing if you go: SweeTarts. Purple, yummy, carbonated and booze-alicious. I came here with a bunch of girls for my friend's bachelorette party. Unfortunately, it was monsooning outside, so we didn't get to enjoy the outdoor space. It was also the night of a Hawks finals game, and I was shocked ot walk in and see almost everyone sporting Hawks gear. Local dive or bar all the Chicago folks visiting LG go to? Hard to say. There wasn't a drink menu that I could see, so I just ordered something I was sure they'd have - Spotted Cow. Always a treat when in WI. Other girls had vodka lemonades, rum and cokes, and other beers as well. Prices were very reasonable. There were TVs throughout the bar, so we all got to watch the game. It was actually really fun being in a "Hawks" bar not in Chicago. No waiterstaff comes by, so when you want a drink, you have to get up and get it from the bar yourself. No biggie. Busboys do come and quickly take away empty glasses, which is a plus. The bar cleared out a ton after the game ended. We had no trouble finding seats. Oh, and the bar sent us over shots to help celebrate the bride-to-be. Nice touch! I'll have to go back and try the food based on the other reviews. Preferably, when it's nice outside. read more

We also ordered bloody marys & the yelpers are spot on. A bit spicy with a nice mini miller lite chaser. Burgers are very good but what we liked even better is the turkey bacon BLT. Bread was toasted perfectly & just the right amount of everything else. We've been to Chuck's 3 or 4 times now and have yet to have a bad experience. Yes, it's a pain to go inside to order but we've always found staff available after the food was delivered to ensure we had everything we needed. Culture is definitely more laid back. Food comes out in a reasonable amount of time but servers are definitely not hovering or checking on you every few minutes. If you're not in a rush, you're fine. Well, first, I don't think this place is such a dive, at least compared with some of our Chicago spots. It's smack on the water, with a fantastic view, and I'm guessing really fun in the summer.I think this is the only bar/restaurant which is right on the water on Lake Geneva. I liked the fact that the bartenders there were in shorts and short sleeve shirts on this early spring Sunday. No slaves to seasonal fashion were those barkeeps. The bar itself is a huge U-shaped one and it was surrounded with revelers. Everyone was yackin', the juke box was rockin', and the big screen TV's with games on were tucked away nicely in the corners. And no-one was really paying attention to them. There are lots of tables if you want to sit and eat, and a separate room for dining, in fact. On the wall next to our table were these little brass plaques with engraved doggie bones and names of deceased pets. So it was kind of a "Vietnam memorial wall", I guess for patrons' beloved companions. Never saw that in a bar before. Nice touch in this friendly spot. Good selection of beers, standard bar fare, but don't go for the food. I had a burger, which was OK, but that was supposed to be what people came for here, according to the you lady at the order window. Deep fried cheese curds ARE available, however. We had to get some. And they still smoke in bars in Wisconsin, so be prepared for that. Looks like a great place to hang once the al fresco weather arrives. One word, Sweetarts! Try one. Who thought you could drink a Sweetart. I'v been going here sense I was to young to be in here. This place is on the lake and everybody who live here knows about it. Also know for there big burgers and big party nights during the summer. They also will have good bands once in a while. Don't expect to move around very well during late summer nights because when it's too late to catch sun rays this is were you go to remedy your sunburn. read more
