Let me start with this... the ambiance, atmosphere, and vibe at Pier 290 was spectacular! I love how close it is to the water and how much of an amazing view you get as well. I'm rarely in Lake Geneva since I'm from Chicago, so I gave this place a try for a bachelor party. The food looked promising on paper; however, I wasn't that satisfied once I tried it. The fish tacos were pretty flavorless when it came to the actual fish, and the house made chips were nothing too special. I just personally think the price didn't match the quality of food. I also had a few bites of my friends salmon bowl, and it was genuinely just okay. I will say that the service was very good, and I enjoyed how the server was giving us recommendations and took a few pictures for us. This was our first time visiting here and everything was exceptional. The young man at valet parking (free) was very kind and engaging, the girls at the hostess stand were very friendly and welcoming, and our waitress, Alexia, was fantastic. Not pushy, timed her appearances perfectly. We sat out outside, lots of others enjoying the summer breeze off the lake but conversation could still be had. Very relaxing watching the water and boats. The food, we had ceviche and steak salad, was very good and plentiful, worth every penny. My husband said the ceviche was in his top three and he frequently travels to both coasts. We were a big group and ordered lots of different things. Then we all passed around the plates and took a little bit of everything, and our general consensus was: The food is fine. Nothing stood out. The things we thought would be great where just fine. But some of the things that we thought would be "meh" were actually good. We got a few appetizers: the ahi tuna tartare, Island Shrimp Plate, chips & dip, and cheese curds. (Because when you're in Wisconsin, you get the cheese curds.) My unexpected favorite was the Island Shrimp Plate, which I never would have ordered myself, but I'm so glad we did. It's breaded shrimp tossed in a honey-mustard sauce, served with sliced sweet peppers and coleslaw. If you're wondering what appetizer to get, this is the one. It's warm and cool, sweet and salty, crunchy and soft, all in one dish. For my entree, I got the blackened tuna sandwich, which sounded great buy didn't taste like much. It had all kinds of great components, though: a thick piece of blackened tuna, avocado, arugula, all between a brioche bun. It just needed to be seasoned properly, but it wasn't, so it mostly just tasted mushy. The highly anticipated food at our table was the lobster roll. It is one of the most expensive things on the menu ($39!). It was one of the things that was just fine, and definitely not worth the price. It was a little dry, which was a shame. One of the unexpected very good things was the turkey melt: deli turkey with cherry jam, bacon, brie and arugula on sourdough bread. It sounds kind of ho-hum, but the addition of a sour cherry jam puts this sandwich into a different category altogether. The location, though! Pier 290 is located right on Lake Geneva, so you get beautiful lakeside views from your table, whether you're sitting inside or outside on the patio. read more

Baked cod was very salty. The potato pancakes were fantastic. The coleslaw was creamy and good. Raspberry beret drink was good and refreshing. Such a fun place with a nice view of the water. I made a reservation for dinner and asked for a table for 2 with a view. However, we were seated in between the bar, a big group and families with children. Not the romantic spot I was envisioning. I looked around and saw empty small tables and asked to be moved. It was much more cozy, quiet, scenic, and a lot less noisy. Why not seat a table for 2 here to begin with? From then on we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and had a terrific server. Thanks Tyler! I've wanted to try this place for a long time, but it's an hour away, so it took some planning, but three girlfriends and I managed to get here for a midweek lunch. It was "midweek busy", not "weekend busy", so we had a reservation, but didn't need it. The parking lot is Very small, so good luck with that on a weekend! The lunch menu plus specials had some interesting choices. I got a turkey melt sandwich that had a sweet cranberry relish to balance out the savory turkey & cheese. It was tasty, but needed more of the relish. My friends had chicken salad sandwich (delicious, but not very original), short rib quesadillas (very interesting & tasty), and a special that was honey BBQ ribs (enjoyed immensely). The view was wonderful from the patio and we enjoyed the breeze off of Lake Geneva. So, with very passable food and nice ambiance, why 3 stars? The meal cost us $40 per person. For lunch. A piece! Be honest with what you're serving - $30 for a lox eggs Benedict is a bit much. We've been coming here for years and I often say no to coming back because of things like this. Been going to Pier 290 for many years, although only 2-3 times annually as there are numerous other restaurants we enjoy which offer better food, service and dining experience. We recently dined there with two other couples and had the following experience. Location, hard to beat but that's about the only reason to return.( At this time) Food has improved marginally compared with previous visits. Chicken Milanese was the best of our entrees, ribs were so so and beef short ribs were fair at best.So, nothing horrible or really good. But, here's where they fell apart. Sat outside which was nice but had to wait 10 minutes before getting our water glasses filled. Drink order was delayed and incorrect. 10 minutes to figure out they don't serve Jim Beam which one of our group ordered. Overall, our server dropped the ball, was inconsistent and was clearly out of his league as a waiter. Service clearly wasn't matching up with prices as was the case in the past. Overall a two star experience. As a local for over 50 years I've spoken with many other locals and their sentiments were pretty much the same as mine. That being said a vast majority of their business is from out of state visitors. My wife and I will give it another try later in the year. Hopefully service improves. read more

Cons: the food!!! So damn overpriced, and beyond subpar. $400 for 2 adults, 1 infant, 1 child. We even shared an entree, which was chicken sliders (waiters recommendation, which should be a red flag). Never again, truly. My son got a hamburger. I am writing this review from a foodie's perspective. This restaurant has near 700 reviews and there are almost as many 1* reviews as 5* reviews. The overall score is 3.1* as of this review. Patrons who really like a great experience from and plating and flavor perspective give this place 1* because the food is nothing better or even worse than a fast sit-down chain. I actually thought the food was terrible. The coconut shrimp app was rolled and fried in breadcrumbs and served in half a coconut shell. It had no coconut flavor. I tasted like it was prepared 30 minutes before we ordered it. There were many other food flaws, line way over salted angle hair pasta, a filet Mignon ordered MR and served MW, the other pasta dish had sausage that tasted like it came off a frozen pizza, the server recommended a Caesar Salad which we ordered and the dressing was lite ranch with some bagged Parmesan strings thrown in, and the most comical was a blueberry cobbler that consisted of blueberry pie filling from a can poured over loose granola with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. $15 for that! The 5* reviews are from people that like the fact the restaurant is on the water and has great views. And that, my Yelp friends, is this proprietor's gimmick. Do not come for the food. It is bad. The problem this business has is that it seats over 500+ people. It is way too big to be able keep up with demand unless the food prep is treated like a fast food assembly line. A fine dining experience can't be delivered with that business model. My experience was like being at a huge wedding venue with bad wedding food. If you like atmosphere, come to Pier 290. If you want good food, don't bother. We had 6 people, food and drinks and tip (service was slow but OK) $480. That is a lot to spend for a bad food experience from beginning to end. read more

For the price I honestly thought it was mediocre. I had a pasta dish with italian sausage, tried the short rib as well as the cod fish fry. The short rib was overcooked and low on flavor. The Cod was awesome and worth it so maybe that is what you gotta come here for. Ambiance is chill the server was nice enough but not super engaged.
