We stopped here this morning for coffee on our way to Beechwood Nature Preserve and actually ended up coming back for ice cream after. Churn has a seasonal fall menu that was just released this weekend. During our first visit I got the pumpkin pie chai latte at the recommendation of the very helpful girl behind the counter and, I kid you not, it tasted like a spicy warm pumpkin pie. I drank it slowly because I didn't want it to be done. That's how good we're talking. I tried my husband's apple brown cinnamon sugar latte and it was also excellent. I had the black raspberry ice cream and it was so creamy it almost pulled like a soft serve. The kids were totally silent while eating their ice cream which is always a sign that something is good. If you get a kid's cup it's served in a special blue cup with a rounded lid which helps keep kids' hands cleaner. If you're in the area it's definitely worth stopping in. read more

I got the waffle bowl, which was 8 dollars with 2 scoops, but it was so unique, I had to try it. The ambiance is hip, with music playing by Kage Ni Natte when I walked in the door. The ice-cream menu lists several staple flavors of handcrafted ice creams as well as over 15 custom flavors that vary daily. These ice creams can be made into milkshakes, ice-cream floats, banana splits, etcetera. The coffee menu lists several types of coffees: drip coffee, iced coffee, frappes, lattes, espressos, etcetera. Prices are average. During my visit, an employee immediately greeted my husband and me, waited patiently while we selected our flavors of ice cream, correctly assembled our bowls of ice cream, and accurately rung up our purchase. I ordered one scoop of black raspberry and one scoop of caramel pretzel, and my husband ordered one scoop of double-fudge Pop-tart. Ok so we were a tad bit late to discovering Churn. My daughter was at cheer and I wanted to treat my son to ice cream. We went to Gibsonia first and then wanted to try this one. This is our FAVE! So there is ice cream the there is ICE CREAM @ CHURN!!! OMG I think they use like super addicting powder and magical pixie dust to make there ice cream because it is the best thing I have ever tasted!!! There are few things I would compare to being as good as "adult time" with my wife if you know what I mean but this is definitely one of them. Now the price is a little steep in my honest opinion but it is soooo worth it. The servings are huge and often messy over the edges but when you get it hurry up and attack the overhang and you'll save yourself a huge mess. We have tried so many on their flavors but my favorite is probably the regular strawberry because it has such a real flavor to it. It is t heavily sugary or syrupy it's just a delightful ice cream. Second favorite of mine is the lavender vanilla. Sounds weird for something you'll eat but it is amazing to your tastebuds and light and refreshing! Almost made wax melts sound tempting hahahaha JK DO NOT EAT WAX MELTS! My wife's favorite flavors are the Oreo cookie dough and the lavender vanilla. My son loves their chocolate with rainbows sprinkles. My daughter loves the birthday cake and the cotton candy. My wife has gotten their lattes and said they were good but they are definitely a tad bit expensive. We also have had their tea sweetened and lavender flavored and it was delicious and delightful. I must say, Churn ranks pretty high on my list of ice cream spots. Nestled right outside of Pittsburgh, this place boasts a great selection of homemade ice cream, and other coffee related items. I think I might have the biggest sweet tooth out of anyone I know, and it was very much satisfied. As far as the flavors, there were a ton of interesting combinations that I'll be back to try at a later date. This trip I ended up getting a strawberry Oreo milkshake with oat milk. Not to be confused with the classic Oreo with strawberry filling but an actual strawberry flavored Oreo made into ice cream. If you are in the area, I'd highly recommend this place to anyone. I tasted the salted caramel, then the coffee chunk and there was some kind of coffee with lavender ice cream as well. The flavor of the coffee chunk was very impressive, so I ordered two scoops on a sugar cone. I also had a muffin and the combination was amazing. The ice cream is really good and the service is also good as well. I think that the prices are a bit steep for ice cream, but it is worth treating yourself to some of these really good flavors and quality ice cream. Awesome unique flavors of homemade ice cream! They have a great selection of options, old favorites and new flavor combinations. I ordered the strawberry chocolate covered pretzel, it was delicious! The strawberry flavor was fresh and didn't taste artificial, there were chocolate pieces with every bite, and the best part were the pretzel pieces that gave a fantastic crunch. The ice cream itself is very smooth, not necessarily soft serve but also not hard serve. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to going back to try another flavor. Atmosphere of the restaurant is welcoming and casual, but very modern. It feels like a coffee shop (which they also serve) where you sit, relax and spend some time talking with friends or reading. Fantastic ice cream shop! I have sampled a plethora of flavors and each item will be listed below with a short review. I'll update this review, since I'm probably going to try even more sweets from here soon. Sugar free caramel latte- does not taste sugar free, decent size, too much frothiness on top. Banana split- huge but quite expensive, 3 scoops and toppings are an additional charge (syrups and nuts are not included). KitKat Chocolate Chip- very few KitKat chunks, not very flavorful and basically tastes like regular chocolate chip ice cream. Frosted Animal Cookie- one of my favorite flavors by far. Unique and sweet, whole chunks of cookie. Cookie dough- average, not many chunks and the chunks are not large. Cake batter waffle cone- cake batter flavor is only okay and the waffle cone gets a bit soggy quicker than usually. Mango smoothie- icy, creamy, thick. I believe they add vanilla ice cream to it. Banana bread- artificial tasting but it is homemade I think. Did not enjoy. Nutella Oreo milkshake- regular is a good size, not much Nutella but the shake was still tasty and Oreos were nicely blended, although some larger chunks were present as well. Chocolate chip cookie and marble cookie- quality cookies but nothing exciting. Brownie- super fudgey and indulgent. Coffee chunk ice cream- the whole chunks were not my style of ice cream. It tasted gritty. Peanut butter cup ice cream- again, pretty average PB ice cream but it is good for those who don't want to be surprised. Strawberry smoothie- also creamy and tasty, this and mango are the best smoothie options. Arctic swirl with MnM- toppings are not really mixed in, they just sat at the top. The base is a thick vanilla. Wild berry smoothie- the worst smoothie I have tried here. Just an odd flavor. Vanilla iced cookie- icing is very sweet, but the base itself is quite bland and tastes almost like shortbread. White chocolate frappe- this may be the same flavor as the vanilla frappe, but you can definitely taste the coffee in these drinks. Not too sweet but too much ice in my opinion. Vanilla latte- does the job but unremarkable. Strawberry milkshake- very sweet, strawberry flavor is maintained throughout the shake. There is also a strawberry jam on the cup itself, a lovely touch. Strawberry boba- don't think the tea mixed well with the strawberry flavor, but the pearls were sweet and juicy. Peanut butter Oreo milkshake- thick, plenty of peanut butter throughout and peanut butter and chocolate sauce around the cup. Could not really taste the Oreo. Overall, it is a great place to check out and they have lots of items, ranging from classic ice cream, to milkshakes, to affogato and coffee. Most of the items are not mind blowing, but some of the more unique offerings make this place worth the visit. It can be a bit pricey for some items, like the banana split, but quality ice cream is worth the extra cost. Cake batter ice cream- they are very generous with the sprinkles but it does cost a bit extra. The flavor itself is very sweet. Frosted double chocolate cookie- a bit of an odd flavor, with almost a strawberry aftertaste but overall still quite chocolatey. read more

Upon entering Churn for the first time, you're immediately enveloped by the scent of freshly baked goods and newly churned desserts. As I scanned the menu for a full 10 minutes (there are a lot of options), I took to Yelp to find out the best decision. When I first read the review about the meatball subs, I was initially confused as it was not advertised on the menu at all, but I guess that's part of the well-kept secret of this location! I took a chance and ordered the meatball sub, and to tell you I was blown away when they actually brought out a sandwich with freshly toasted bread that they assured me was homemade, and the most perfect blend of ground meatballs that were seared to perfection. They use a three-cheese blend with provolone, mozzarella, and pepperjack. The sauce had a unique tang to it with a slight spice that I still have yet to replicate, but I'm sure it's a family secret. If you're ever in Hartwood Plaza, be sure to stop by and inquire about one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. For dessert, I kept it simple and had a large vanilla milkshake that made the entire meal perfect. read more

This is my first visit to this location. They are located in Hartwood Towne Square just outside of Hartwood Acres. This location is a little smaller than the Gibsonia location. The ice cream case is smaller, although 12 flavors still give you plenty of choices. In addition to the ice cream, they make milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches. They have Boba teas, flavored lemonades, and specialty coffees. Churn supports locally owned businesses by obtaining all of their baked goods in the Pittsburgh area. You still make the milkshakes! That's your JOB! It's unfortunate that you'll have to clean the milkshake machine again but that's your JOB! Do your JOB. Second problem...the ice cream is not good. I had Apple Pie flavor which had coconut flavor only. It always had pieces of something that had the consistency of plastic. I had to keep pulling these white things out of my mouth. Really, really bad. I was with someone else who threw his ice cream out of the car window. Both flavors were that bad. I'm not sure why people like this place. Not sure why it gets good reviews. Great place for ice cream in Pittsburgh! I keep coming back for the cake batter ice cream and the cookie dough. I have tried tons of flavors and the only one I do not recommend is the cookie butter ice cream, but that is just me. The flavors are different almost every time, so I get to try all of there new delicious ice cream! I get the doggie ice cream for my doggo and she loves it as well.
