After going to mass today my mom was craving churros, fresh churros, not the hard frozen kind that vendors have sitting behind a glass enclosure then reheat and serve. Yuck! Frozen churros should be arrested for false impersonation. I was going to stop by Cardenas Markets to get Tres Estrellas Churro mix which is like bisquick for churros and make some at home. I highly recommend this mix and it even comes with a piping bag but you should have some experience of making choux pastry dough since the directions (for me anyways) have always been wrong. However, since I'm planning on baking lots of cookies tomorrow I decided to jump on Yelp Bay Area to find a nearby churro vendor. We could've gone down to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church or Christmas in the Park where there is one good churro stand down by Quetzalcoatl. Again, the other stands have those fake frozen impersonators but since I didn't want to search for parking I decided to go with the Yelp recommendation of Churros El Guero in front of Fresco Market next to Eastridge. This is also a very busy spot but we were able to score a parking spot right away. Unfortunately, the churro guy had just arrived and his oil was still heating up so we were patiently people watching. This is when we noticed lots of people going over to this haphazard outdoor dining spot. This was not the ideal spot to visit since the weather forecast has been falsely taunting us with rain all day. Since it was now noon we decided it was best to eat real food before munching on something sweet. I had never been to Elma's Taqueria which is connected to Fresco Market probably because I don't like that market. I went in once when they first opened and it stunk. Literally and figuratively. Nope, I'll pass. The line for Elma's was impressive so we strolled up to the outdoor window and looked up at the menu. It's basically Birria everything. Birria de Res (beef) and Birria de Chivo (goat) in a bowl, tacos, quesadilla, quesabirrias, etc...and daily specials including Menudo today. Since it was packed we shared a table with a gentleman from Michoacan while waiting for our order who said this is the best birria anywhere. He said even in Michoacan this is would be the best birria. High praise indeed. My verdict. It was good. Well seasoned, juicy and generous portions. I could only eat one taco so we packed up the rest to bring home and walked back over to the churro stand. Remember the churros? I did. In fact I remembered hiring El Guero to do some events for me in the past where he brings his pot of oil and makes fresh churros on the spot. Then you can have him fill it with chocolate, strawberry, caramel or other fillings. $3 each or 4 for $10. We opted for 2 originals, 1 chocolate and 1 strawberry. Saw this stand while walking around looking at Christmas lights in the willow glen area and the smell just got us and we had to order. We got 3 for 10 dollars. The flavors we got were chocolate, cajeta and original. Never had cajeta but my bf said it was good and Cajeta is the best. Just thinking about it makes me wish I had some more. Service was quick and the churros were perfectly cooked. Crispy and crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy inside. Can't wait to have this again. My personal favorite is the caramel filled churro, followed by the vanilla. I've tried all and would skip chocolate and strawberry, those were def on the artificial-tasting side. But other than that.. these churros are incredible. They're freshly made so they're hot when you get them, crisp exterior and soft insides. I got to try Churros El Guero since they were at the Sazon Latin Food Festival in Alameda just this past weekend. They didn't have any signs up about their flavors or prices, but when I stopped to ask, they confirmed it's $3 per churro, and there were several fillings available - strawberry, vanilla, caramel, chocolate. I opted for chocolate, which they were able to get for me right away. I really enjoyed the churro - it was fresh, crispy without being unpleasantly hard, and the chocolate inside was gooey. I would note the chocolate tastes more like chocolate sauce or syrup - think of something like Hershey's syrup - rather than like a chocolate bar or cocoa. However, it was still quite good, and $3 is pretty reasonably priced nowadays for a churro. I'll certainly keep an eye out for them the next time I'm in San Jose or see them at an event. read more

This was such a crowdpleaser and the freshness and customization of each churro is what made guests really happy and excited. Business: Carlos was very easy to work with. We went back and forth via email to work out the logistics and he was able to generate an invoice so I understood exactly when, how, and how much to pay them. The cart arrived on schedule and served churros without a hitch. When I hit my churro limit, they also allowed me to purchase more in real time via some quick calls to Carlos, which was nice of them. Appreciate their flexibility here as guests loved this so much that they went back for seconds!! Pricing: Pricing was extremely fair given the late night hour of our service. The final price of bringing a whole cart to make ready-to-order churros was much cheaper than asking our venue to put out milk and cookies on a tray and way cheaper than getting most other dessert bar offerings catered in. Found this dessert stand at the Viva CalleSJ event this past Sunday and couldn't resist its delicious offerings of heart shaped churros covered in cinnamon and sugar and stuffed churros filled with various flavored sauces and creams (caramel, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate). An updated review. We've used Churros El Guero for my daughter's 2nd birthday. We decided to utilize them again for her 4th birthday but instead of the full service we opted for a party tray for March 15th. Unfortunately, my communication and attentiveness was not as great this time around. I reached out several ways, Instagram, email, and directly through phone/text. It took about 7 days for them to respond to my first inquiry - after finally getting a hold of Carlos we were able to book and he answered all my questions. I paid in FULL and ordered 150 plain churros with 75 2oz cups filled with filling. It was the day prior to my event and I confirmed via text that we were all set for us to pick up at 2:30 pm. It was around maybe 12-1pm I received a call not from Carlos but from another colleague of his. That they will not be at location, 2217 quimby rd san jose California 95122, they would be at another event then. So they had asked if there was another way. Or time to pick up. She also offered uber/delivery. I agreed to the delivery and shared location. Through text she confirmed my order and then quotes me a price. I told her I've already paid in full to Carlos - apparently she wasn't aware of that but I keep record and shared my payment with her. Although she did apologize for that, I think this was very unprofessional. It comes to around 3:30 pm and well apparently no one was picking up the order - we were busy setting up for our party the luckily my brother was in that area and I could send him to pick up where ever they might be. My brother picked up from said person at almost 4:00 pm! We agreed I'd pick up by 2:30 pm. Our party started at 4:30pm!!!!!! According to my brother she was awaiting his arrival not at a store front but in her vehicle and just met him in the parking lot... I reached out to Carlos that same day left a message and text about the situation. To get some sort of reimbursement because that service was not at all what we had agreed upon. I still have not received a response. As far as quality of the churros - I feel as if because of the delay they became a bit soggy/soft. Again because our original pick up time was at 2:30 pm I feel as if these were made early and because they couldn't get anyone to deliver they stayed covered the whole time and so therefor it caused it to loose its crispy exterior. We don't get out to this area of San Jose very often but we happened to be a few miles away for dinner and I had heard good things about this little mini food truck parked in front of a grocery store so we cruised on over. Extraordinary churros from the most casual of places (let's be real, you're probably getting the most authentic food from those sorts of spots). Freshly fried on the spot at a low price right next to the Fresco supermarket, you can run your grocery errands and finish off with a bang or just drive all the way to nab that sugary glory, because it's so worth it. Parking is fairly trivial given its proximity to the supermarket. We had a young lady manning the stall when we went. There's also no menu, but you can order them in batches of 3 or 4. I couldn't make out the price for 3, but for 4 for $10. Fillings can be injected into the middle of the churros for free (chocolate, caramel, vanilla, strawberry). Unfortunately chocolate was broken, so we doubled up on the caramel. *absolutely heavenly*. The freshly fried churros were just the right crisp on the outside and lightly tossed in some sugar. The fillings weren't distractingly sweet and blended in really nicely with the churros making for a very nice mixture of aroma from the filling and a melty churro core that's still soft in all the right ways.
