I sat on the patio and saw a steady stream of people of all walks of life entering, so I knew I had found a neighborhood gem. After trying a sample of the "café de olla" (mild and mildly sweet-ask and they'll give you a sample), I ordered the mocha latte ($7) that comes with Oaxacan chocolate, the milk of your choice and espresso. The chocolate had a rich and distinct flavor, way better than any commercial Mexican chocolate milk. Served in a paper cup for here. The staff was friendly and took the time to tell me about the signature Oaxacan pastries. While they have all the Mexican pan dulce classics and even some Colombian varieties, I tried the "hojaldra," a light, airy bun (with just a touch of sugar and sesame on top 1.75). Very good accompanied with a drink. Also, the "barquillo de lechesilla" ($2.50) was surprisingly good, given I rarely like most custard fillings. Bread had a good texture and flake, and the filling was firm not gooey. The shop is in a converted Craftsman home, well kempt and decorated with a beautiful raised deck patio. There is a screen kiosk but I found it easier to order in person. It's a bustling spot but they seem to take their time to serve with courtesy and a smile. There is only one table in the covered area, so I'd only do coffee dates here on non-rainy days. A piano sits by the entrance inviting folks to play. A tree juts out from the center and makes lovely shade for the patio. The passing traffic horrible, though the construction noise was loud when I was there, as a large apartment building is in the works across the street. There is a parking lot, which is very convenient for those that just want to pick up food to go. Don't be put off by the crematorium directly across the street. Think of it as something distinctly Mexican, mixing death with life, and maybe even inviting the deceased to enjoy some of your delicious treats from Dulcinea. read more

Dulcinea had a pop up at Nordstrom today, and I literally walked into my house, opened the box, and immediately took a bite of EVERYTHING. Let me tell you, every single bite was SO GOOD. The burritos came with meat, egg, cheese, and beans. We also added potatoes for 1.50. The total for each burrito was 12.75, which I thought was pretty good. This is the type of item I would go out of my way for and found this to be better than others in the area that I've tried. I came here to order pan dulce for my son's class. This isn't your average panaderia. They have a big touchscreen pad to take your order. No tongs and trays or pointing out which ones you want. These are very pricey per piece! They did look fresh and are on the larger side but dang! Some of the pieces run $5. I also ordered a breakfast burrito which was amazing. I asked for orange and red sauce because I don't like green and she gave me orange and green. The cafe de olla was just ok. My total was pretty outrageous but I figured I'll just charge it to the game. I won't embarrass myself by sharing that to the public audience. My only real complaint is that she packed the 32 pieces of pan in paper bags. When I asked for a box she said she had to charge me $4.95 for it. Line was short, but I was waiting behind a couple of folks who were just waiting for their order. The inside is very small, so it was hard to tell who was actually in line. It was a chalenge deciding what to get. All their baked goods looked so yummy! I went with a few varieties and their Oaxacan tamal. Everything was delicious! I love how fluffy their concha is and that the topping doesn't crumble off at each bite. Ojo de pancha is my favorite pan dulce, and theirs is sooo good. The pastry part is thinner than I'm used to, but the cake part is so soft. I also got cookies which aren't too heavy on the lard. Oaxacan tamales are my favorite kind. I love the banana leaf essence in the masa. Theirs is filled with chicken mole. I had them top it with sour cream and cheese. So good!!! Oh, I also got their Oaxacan coffee. I love Mexican baked goods, and when I heard about Dulcinea Panaderia, I couldn't wait to try it. The building looks like a converted house, with a small sign on the sidewalk, so it's easy to pass by; there is a small driveway to leads to a parking lot behind the building. Once inside, I saw that they offered tamales, tortas, tacos, quesadillas, and more. I had a torta de pollo, and it was fantastic! They also make a great cafe de olla. There are a few tables out on the deck - it was a greta place to have a good meal while enjoying the smells of fresh basked goods. After eating, I went back inside and bought several bakery items: a concha, novia, empenada de lechesilla. Everything was fantastic, and prices were very reasonable. I'll be returning to Dulcinea Baking many times, I am sure!
