Stopped by here real quick during a weekend Vietnam Town trip with my bestie. I've never really tried soy pudding or the more modern chè, so when I see Oche Desserts offers that on their menu, I decided to give it a try. The shop is actually pretty spacious, probably fits around 20-30 people, and I LOVE the minimalist aesthetic. Super clean, simple, and just nice to be in. The cashier was really friendly and we got our order in like 5 minutes. I ordered the S1 Egg Cream Soy Pudding and D8 Special Coconut Flan. Everything was packed nicely in to-go containers, and omg their mascot/logo is sooo cute. For to-go they also give you a separate bag of ice, their ice are the type of premium crunchy ice chips that melt in your mouth. Flavor-wise, I really enjoyed the S1. The soy pudding was soft, fragrant, and had that smooth jiggly texture. The egg cream was sooo good, and the toasted coconut flakes added a nice little crunch to balance everything out. The D8 Special Coconut Flan is def a must-try if you're into coconut + flan (which I am lol). The flan itself was a bit thicker than my personal preference, felt like they might've used heavy cream, but still well made and not overly sweet. The caramel layer had a nice color and flavor. All the toppings inside were pretty good too, especially the coconut strips. The coconut milk sauce tied everything together really nicely. Oche is hands down the best che place in SJ! I used to frequent Ba Co Desserts, but recently tried Oche and was pleasantly amazed at how good each and every dessert was! I tried the suong sa hat luu (special jellies dessert) and the pandan soy. I adjusted the sweetness for both to half sugar and it was perfect. The jellies dessert was a classic and the pandan soy was very fragrant with pandan flavoring. The soy pudding was soft and there were even fresh coconut shreds inside. My friend and I ordered the same thing and their order came out with a piece of hair in it. He brought it to the staff's attention and they replaced it so quickly at no charge and no questions asked. We appreciate that! It was one of the best chè 3 màu I've had in San Jose! There are sweetness levels, which is a first. The staff recommended 50% sweet and that was the perfect level. 100% would have been way over the top. All the beans were cooked to perfection, not too mushy or too firm. They had all the usual ingredients. There were subtly sweet coconut jelly cubes which I've never had in a chè ba màu recipe, but it grew on me since I enjoy textures in my food and it added that texture. The liquid wasn't too thin and runny, it was the perfect consistency. My husband isn't usually a huge Vietnamese dessert soup person and he really enjoyed it! My friends also were raving about it. They have a combination of traditional desserts and more modern/fusion desserts. It was a simple dessert that my friend and I decided to get. We're always interested in finding new places to try and review too, so here we are after our dinner. Dessert: Thai Dessert: 4.2/5 This was my friend's choice and I was able to try it. Chè Thái is honestly such a classic. Different places will add different ingredients to the cocktail. The combination of the jellies, and fruits usually always work well together in this one. Today, this one had a combination of multiple jellies and red rubies. Somewhat limited items though? Flavor wise, amazing because honestly you can't go wrong with the classic ingredients. Textures are a plus too. Everything combined into one bite tastes good. Sweetness was so sugary sweet for this being their "regular" sweetness. The coconut milk tastes very fresh and something about it is quite light. Maybe it's a combination of coconut water or another liquid and coconut milk because it really doesn't have that richness I usually get with coconut-based desserts like this. Pandan Soy Pudding: 4.5/5 This was my dessert that I chose. Note that this one does contain durian. If you are unable to tolerate that scent or taste, I would 100% recommend getting another item. Durian flavor seems fresh even without the durian being present. I don't get large pieces and chunks of durian, but the taste and scent are there. Perhaps they infused the milk or even the soy pudding with it. The soy pudding is lovely. Very soft, super silky, and quite fragrant with the pandan and durian. The jelly adds a nice texture component to the soy pudding too, which I appreciate. I got 25% sweetness and that was just the right amount of sweetness for me. Very aware that these desserts can be sugary sweet, so I often opted to getting a lower percentage of sweetness. Ice Pebbles: Side note about the ice, that I had to include. They use the small pebble ice cubes in their drinks. Super cute. --------- Quality: Fresher compared to other locations Quality of this place seems more fresh than other locations. Typically, you do want to consume this dessert quickly because the opened coconut will spoil quicker. Even though that's the case, I still cannot consume a whole cup in one sitting unless more people are help me to do so. With that said, I was able to consume the entirety of this cup without it spoiling overnight. This leads me to believe that their items are more on the fresh side than others. I've had other items that completely spoil overnight in the fridge and go to waste. Price: Fair For an cup like that, I do think that it was a fair price. Currently, the price range is around $8 for the desserts and $6 for the soy pudding. Seems normal since the average prices for these are within the price range of $7 to $10 these days. It's expensive if you think of the actual components and individual ingredients. You could technically buy all of these items in a can and mix it together yourself. The issue is is that they're in a can and so unless you're feeding a party, just one individual cup might suffice for you. This is also perhaps why I still go out and buy individual ones if I want one. Service: x2 Interactions We ordered in the front cashier and he was super sweet. Very patient as we chose our desserts. For the second interaction, it was when he brought out the desserts to our table. That's quite the sweet gesture because typically, they would just stand behind the counter and call out our name. They were literally delivering the drinks to each party. Given, there were only a few parties, so this is doable, but it might be difficult to keep track if there are lots of groups present. They came out super quickly too. We observed that they really only need to add the coconut milk and ladle in the syrup, so this is explains it. Ambiance: Flat and 2D The space seems kind of cold and 2 dimensional. The interior seems almost like a white box. The walls and flooring are both the same tone, so it makes the place seem kind of flat. There is quite a bit of empty space in the middle and they might benefit from adding more tables or something in the middle. Honestly, this place has a lot of room for creativity. Two rows of tables line the sides of the wall and that's kind of it. A water jug is placed at the corner on the right side as you walk in. Nice touch because these desserts can be highly sweet.
