The place to go for Indian food in the Tenderloin, but be very careful when walking around this area and would recommend bringing a friend. Upon entering, you will be greeted by the owner who takes your order and bring the food to your table. I usually order the Chicken Biryani, Tikka Masala, Lamb Saag, and Garlic Naan. As for the quality of the food, it's very flavorful and their meat quality is very tender. Usually when I get food from here, we have leftovers, but for some reason it tastes even better overnight. If you dine in, they will offer you a pitcher of water and you can also get tea at the back counter. As for the service, the owner is very friendly and runs most of the restaurant by himself. Food is descent, hence two stars instead of one star, but the Customer Service is terrible. So I ordered Two Chicken Tikka Masala but when I checked it later they did not put the Tandori Chicken in to both orders. I called them up to explain the situation and they stated they will compensate me for the two orders of Chicken Tikka Masala and for the mistake and my time, as I had to go pick up the order myself they will give an additional Chicken Tikka Masala or another dish. I was told my name, number and some notes will be left at the front desk explaining the situation. I could not pick the food up that night or the next day because of work so when I called in on Saturday Afternoon they would no longer compensate me for the Third dish. I mean it is kind of logical if you mess up an order that you would compensate the customer for their time and inconvenience right? I stated what was the point of me even calling and trying to fix this issue, I mean would you rather have people write a Negative Reviews? The person over the phone goes "Do it! I've had nothing but great experiences with Chutney for the past 4+years, but am starting to notice a decline lately in both quantity, and quality. They used to add large chunks of potatoes to their biryani, which is apparently no longer included,as well as quantity/quality of the chicken(but the price is still the same). The meal was basically a large container full of seasoned rice and scattered chicken bones with little to no meat, that had to be slivered off of chunks of surrounding bone marrow. I don't know what happened with their biryani plates, but they really need to step their game up, and not cut corners if they're going to charge the same price for a disappointing fraction of the ingredients that they used to include. read more

Disclaimer: This is one of my most favorite restaurants of all time (been coming here since 2006 as a teenager). So what I'm going to write sucks but it has to be said: If you've been to Chutney, then you already know it's in the best neighborhood/area. I've had instances before of aggressive panhandlers outside (and even venturing inside) the restaurant- BUT in the past, the manager or whoever worked the front always took care of business by booting them out and making sure customers were SAFE here. Tonight, I ate with my friend and his family for a birthday celebration. Everything was going great until the end: we took a group photo, and a man sitting behind us began to SCREAM at us in English and another language. He was demanding we don't take a photo of him, to delete the photo, and he even said some shit like "Women don't belong here," which was fucking weird since he was there with his wife? The reason for my 1 star review: the manager/workers didn't do shit! They were literally staring without trying to intervene. It took me, my friend, and his dad to get our group safely out the door (the entire time the guy is shouting and trying to fight), and not a single person working there tried to help. They didn't talk to him, separate us, nothing. If we weren't there, would he have continued to shout and even maybe hit some of my friend's family? I honestly think so. This is disappointing because we've been coming here since teenagers, and it's still hella good. Today was my first time trying the chutney restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised! The environment was extremely welcoming and the owner was really nice to my group. We ordered goat churgha, lamb curry, regular naan and a qeema naan. My favorites were regular naan and lamb curry. I was just disappointed with the fact that lamb curry had more bones than the meat. But the taste of that curry was Delicious! I was craving some fresh tandoori naan as well and the naan at the chutney restaurant exceeded my expectations. Also, make sure to try their chutney with your friends because their chutney makes the taste ten times more delicious. I loved my experience their and the Taste of their food. Prices are cheap, the food is middle of the road, and the service is marginal. I go here for the wraps. They are about $9. Its a naan filled with meat... like an Indian burrito of sorts. They have ground chicken, chunk chicken, lamb and beef. I typically do the chicken because its $1 cheaper and I am cheap. After you place your order at the front, you take a seat with your number. A server brings over a plate of vegetables... lettuce, onions and tomato. After multiple visits, I found that they keep a sweet plum sauce in squeeze bottles in the refrigerator also used for the drinks. The guests are permitted and encouraged to help themselves to these squeeze bottles. The noise level can get high on a busy Friday night, and the ambience is nothing to write home about. This is definitely not a date spot, but one of the Tenderloin's cheap eats. read more

Chutney is a nice surprise deep in the heart of the 'Loin. Maybe not such a surprise since it's in the same local vicinity of Shalimar, Dottie's True Blue, and Pho Tan Hoa - all among my favorite urban dives. I can now add Chutney to this select list for serving some really terrific Indian-Pakistani dishes on par with Pakwan, Lahore Karahi, and Golden Gate Pizza & Indian Cuisine. In fact, their service model is exactly the same as Pakwan's. Go up to the counter, order, and wait at a table of your own choosing until someone legitimate takes your number away. As you wait, you get a pitcher of water and then a bare-bones salad of iceberg lettuce, tomato slices and sliced onion with a few wedges of lemon for dressing (see photo). It's good, and hey, it's free. My order starts to arrive. First off is the $2.99 Tandoori Chicken Leg, scorching hot but tasty-crispy-tender once the temperature climbs down (see photo). I had a $1.99 flat of Garlic Naan sprinkled with bits of cilantro (see photo). It was bigger than my hand. My main dish was not their curry (next time) but their $6.99 plate of Lamb Biryani (see photo). Really good stuff since it was a fried rice deep with flavor with huge chunks of tender lamb embedded in the generous mound of savory goodness. Service wasn't overly friendly but fast and efficient. Table turnover is a pretty critical component of their value proposition since the lines get long here. Expect it to be crowded, so you aren't disappointed with your first impression. It's definitely worth the breathless hike up Jones to try their extensive menu. Bargain meals of this level of quality are all too rare indeed. Wow.. this place... I really don't like giving bad ratings but tonight I had the worst Curry I have ever had at this place.. It's way up there in my top 5 worst meals of all time too!! I'm not particularly picky when it comes to eating out but I do have a few simple requirements: Hot Food, clean warm restaurant and (preferably) Boneless meat. This met none of these. The guy at the till said this was fine. When our food came the 'Madras' was actually BBQ Chicken according to the server. Parking: There is a covered parking lot right next door (at a cost of $7 a day) that I think may even be owned by the same people but a word of warning - When my husband and I went to collect our car nobody was there. Ordered via Eat24 since I had a $2 off code. *Vegetable samosa (2 pieces): crispy puffs filled with potatoes and green peas ($3.99) -The Samosas were big and the shell crispy. I like that they gave me 2 sides of mint sauce since I normally need a little more than one for both samosas. *Chicken tikka masala: boneless chicken cooked with special bombay sauce ($7.99) -Yum! I loved the creaminess of the sauce. Wished it were a little spicier since I like a kick with my curry. *Onion naan: naan topped with chopped onions ($1.99) -I wasn't a huge fan of their naan. I liked the chewiness of it, but it didn't have much onion flavor. *Garlic naan: naan topped with garlic and cilantro ($1.99) -Same with the galic naan. Not much garlic flavor. *Rice pullao: saffron flavored basmati rice ($1.99) -Good base for the curry. Came here on a busy Saturday night with some of my good friends craving Indian food. The restaurant was busy but I guess we came at the right time as tables were open without any wait. My group of 5 decided to order family style and share all of our dishes. We decided to order the Chicken Tiki Marsala, Aloo Vindaloo (I love the name of this dish!), Aloo Ghobi, Lamb Biryani and Bengan Bharta with Garlic, Keema (beef), Onion and plain Naan. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chicken Tiki Marsala: Delicious as usual. Probably the most popular Indian dish and this place makes it to perfection. Creamy sauce, perfectly seasoned and chicken wasn't over cooked. Highly recommended if you are new to Indian food or don't feel adventurous ordering Lamb. Lamb Biryani: Holy crap this was spicy. I have a low tolerance for spiciness but I took a few bites and I was sweating and panting. I had to refill my cup with milk tea 2 or 3 times to counter the capsaicin in my mouth. However, of all the dishes we ordered, this was the best and had the most powerful seasoning. You could definitely taste each unique herb and spice placed in the dish and the lamb was delicious without any gamey taste. Bengan Bharta: YUM! Who would think eggplant could be prepared so well? The dish is a puree of eggplant and other veggies into a paste or thick salsa like texture which goes perfectly with the Naan. Lots of flavor and I liked the texture. Aloo Ghobi: This dish was quite flavorful and the texture of the cauliflower was perfect. A good alternative if you don't like the saucy curry to dip your Naan in. Aloo Vindaloo: Although I love the name, the dish was subpar. This was the only dish I didn't like because it was very bland. The curry had no taste and we had to add salt. I'm not sure if they forgot to add seasoning or if the dish is purposely bland but I probably wouldn't order this again. Garlic, Keema (beef), Onion and plain Naan: all were good but I probably wouldn't spend extra on the Keema (Beef) Naan next time. The dishes come with enough flavor and doesn't need beef to compliment an already delicious dish. Garlic was my favorite but when it comes to Naan, everyone has their own favorites. ********************************************************************** Overall, excellent service and great good. Unlimited milk tea which I love. The secret to the optimal sugar-tea ratio is one full cup to two table spoons of sugar. Although the milk tea runs out quickly, the waiters are very efficient in refilling without much wait time. Also the waiters and cashier are extremely polite and nice. They aren't afraid to recommend dishes if you're indecisive. Many of the Indian restaurants I've been to have had unfriendly workers but not this place. Seekh Kabab: meaty, savory stick of joy, like a sausage but not.. Tandoori Chicken: A flavorful chicken breast cooked in the clay oven. There wasn't much to service or a formal waiter. You order, they bring it. For me it's all about the Seekh Kabab and Biryani. Just spicy and delicious. From my view, Chutney makes good Indian cuisine at a fair price. A lot of times when people think of Indian food. They think curry. I'm not a big fan of curry myself. The strong scent and flavor isn't my favorite. Even though it's a scary world outside of the restaurant, inside it's surprisingly clean and cheery. The food is affordable and tastes way better than my usual chain Naan and Curry. The workers are friendly and even put a plate of lettuce, onions, and tomatoes and a pitcher of water upon choosing a desired seat. We ordered lamb tikka masala, chicken korma curry, Lamb Seekh Kabab, one plain naan, one garlic naan, and Rice Pullao. This was enough for 3 people (we had 2) so we had to pack some to go! The tikka masala curries are always a favorite and the lamb was so tender and flavorful. The Chicken korma curry also had tender chicken and the curry was filled with many different spices but just wasn't my taste. The lamb kabab wasn't that special to me either and wouldn't recommend it if we have the same type of taste. The naans were nice and fluffy and I especially love the garlic naan. This review is years overdue. I have been dining at Chutney longer than I will admit to. I used to work around the corner from here and went twice a week for several years. I have had almost everything on the menu with the exception of the briyanni and the tandoori's. I am sure they are both good I just prefer the saucey stuff. There has never been a dish I have had here that hasn't caused to me to lick the plate. Keep in mind this is no Dosa or Amber India. It is just divie and delicious. My 4 star rating is mainly for the bhindi masala (okra curry). I usually never order okra in a restaurant but someome told me that if u ever visit a Pakistani restaurant you must try the okra/bhindi curry and so i did. It was the best bhindi curry i ever had, hands down! Its delicious and it has a nice smoky flavor. Its a must try in this restaurant! Paneer tikka masala was good but didnt like the fact that it had artificial color. My hands turned orange as if im returning from an Indian/Pakistani wedding celebrations Veg Biryani was OK and i dont blame them. Sorry Im vegetarian Bit mild to my liking. But it had good saffron flavor and i loved the texture of the rice that was cooked to perfection. I would love to visit them again just for the bhindi masala!
