The curry was delicious. I enjoyed the butter chicken it was exactly how i wanted it. Goat was good but a little too mild for my tastes. My pne disappointment was the naan was a little too bready for my liking. I like a flatter bread and this one was slightly too fluffy for my liking. The dinning room is typical of a casual dining area. I do like the self service area where plates and silverware are stored. We visited this place back in 2016 or 17 while one of our trips to the city. It was a really cold day so we decided to eat something indoors and something spicy. Yelped for an Indian place and this showed up at walking distance so we walked upto it. Upon locating, we found it was on a busy street and had nice seating indoors. We went in and were seated promptly as it was around 1:30pm, which is not a busy time usually for lunch. We ordered chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, and biryani. Everything was great but we loved tikka masala and naan of all the items. They had a variety of appetizers and desserts but we just had big main course. Service was quick and servers were very attentive. Place was really clean so we enjoyed eating there. We tried Punjab Kabab House in the Tenderloin, close to Union Square, for lunch Tues 3/20/18 after noticing Little Delhi was closed. FREE hot chai, I asked and we can help ourselves. I liked it. They have lunch special so that was good. We both got the Tandoori and curry for lunch $10.95. It took quite a bit of time, I think because of the chicken tandoori, if you get the other dishes it looks like it's faster. The combo had a big piece of chicken tandoori leg and thigh pretty tasty, rice, scoop of chickpeas curry, and either lamb or chicken curry. I got the lamb curry, it had 2 small pieces of lamb, I thought was so-so, but the sauce was good. Brother got chicken curry and he said was only 1 piece. Bunch of regular naan given, was tasty enough. Ask for the 2 sauces: chutney and tamarind. Diners next to us asked for no rice and extra roti so that's an option there. You can charge it. The curry was flavorful, the naan was soft and warm, the rice was well cooked and the chicken tandoori was well seasoned and enjoyable. Do not let the surrounding areas prevent you from coming here. Despite the area being pretty sketch and the restaurant not looking like a 5 star, the food was wonderful. Greeted and sat quickly. We ordered the chicken tikka masala, garlic naan and lamb kebabs. CTM was absolutely amazing. The sauce was creamy but not heavy, the chicken was cooked well and the spice was there but not overbearing. The lamb kebabs were unfortunately a little dry but the sauces available came in handy. When we settled down, we put in our order and received our food fast and hot. Here's what we had: - Veggie samosas: these are like samosas on steroids! for $2.50 you get two HUGE ones. Deep fried and crispy, the insides have curried potatoes and peas. You can dip them in a tamarind or raita sauce from the squirt bottles provided. I agree with Patty P, these could've used more filling - Lamb curry: chunks of tender lamb in a flavorful, not-too-spicy curry sauce. - Chicken Tikka Masala: I haven't had this in ages, I almost didn't recognized it. Yes, it was decent. - Prawn Pepper Masala: since I was busy paying attention to the lamb curry, I only had a spoonful of this. Tender prawns. - Chicken curry with spinach: I love that this dish has a lot of spinach but others may not prefer it that way. Placed the order online before I left work and stopped by around 5:45pm to grab my take out order. *Vegetable Samosa (2 Pieces): Deep fried turnovers stuffed with spiced potatoes and peas ($3.50) *Chicken Tikka Masala: Boneless BBQ chicken cubes in a medium spicy tomato based sauce, Very spicy ($9.95) *Garlic Naan: Leavened bread stuffed with garlic ($2.95) The chicken tikka masala was so comforting. I liked the flavors and it had a subtle heat. Though I wished it were spicier as I ordered it very spicy. The consistency was nice and creamy like I like, but there wasn't much chicken in the dish. The garlic naan was good. Fluffy, soft, and with good garlic flavor. The samosas were crispy, but they were kind of on the smaller side. I adore a good mint chutney with my samosas, but theirs was runny with not much flavor. I adored the naan and the flavors of the chicken tikka masala, but the samosas were a little disappointing. Just across from each other on the gritty intersection of Mason and Eddy are two competing Indian eateries in the heart of the Tenderloin. One is staffed with an efficient waitstaff that borders on robotic, while the other is comparatively smaller with a tireless owner who takes a hands-on role waiting tables and taking take-out orders. One serves well-crafted specialty dishes like the velvety Badami Chicken that make the dining experience memorable, while the other serves by-the-numbers Indian fare that is either overcooked or imbalanced in flavor. One fills up quickly, the other was pretty vacant when I was there. One is called Little Delhi (which I just reviewed), while the other is this place, the one I would generally root for as the underdog in a Lagaan-like match like this, but unfortunately Punjab just doesn't deliver the goods for me, at least enough for me to cheer them on. I came here one weekday evening when I saw Little Delhi was completely packed with tourists. I thought I should give Punjab a try and see if there was a chance of discovering a hidden gem. Nope, just a lump of curry-flavored coal. I ordered my standard dishes here. First up was the $7.95 Bhindi Masala, a good-size portion but with way too much tomato for the amount of okra and onions offered with the medium spice gravy lending an odd flavor to the dosh (see photo). The second was a special request as I wanted Tandoori Chicken but not the half-chicken offered at $11.95. I just wanted a chicken leg and thigh which he reasonably charged me $7.95 (see photo). But sadly, what arrived was overdone, burnt to the point of being nearly inedible, a sad fate for this piece of poultry given that it was dark meat. The $2.95 side of Basmati Rice was badly needed to offset the aftertaste of both dishes. Bummed to find that Punjab is not really giving Little Delhi a run for their money because some healthy competition would be good on this block. Alas, Little Delhi has little to worry about from Punjab. After a busy day, I got back to my hotel and realized I never ate breakfast... or lunch......... or dinner. Oops! It was still a decent hour so I quickly searched for nearby restaurants that I'd be able to walk to, that weren't crazy expensive, and that had good ratings/ reviews/ pics. Punjab Kabab House was what I came up with, and once again Yelp did me well! The atmosphere inside was this cool combination of fancy but also very casual and down to earth. Take a look at the pics and you'll (hopefully) see what I mean. Anyway, there were a nice amount of people there but it wasn't loud or crowded. Even though I travel solo a lot I still get a bit nervous, maybe embarrassed/ self-conscious, about going to restaurants alone. BUT I was glad to see there were others doing exactly the same thing at this restaurant. It wasn't weird eating at a table by myself here at all, for anyone who might be curious about that. I had scanned the menu a little beforehand, so it didn't take me long to order. My original plan was to get the Chicken Tikka Masala, but I asked and learned it didn't come with rice. Normally I might not mind, but I was pretty hungry after not eating all day and wanted something I knew would be really filling. Boy did I make the right choice in ordering the Chicken Biryani, then. This was a big ol' plate of rice with a great portion of chicken as well. It also came with a pretty big piece of na'an bread, which was brought out before my main meal. They also gave me two different sauces, which I was super happy about because I love me a good sauce to add to... well, anything. The rice was extremely flavorful and the chicken had a similar taste. They definitely had a good amount of Indian-esque spices going on. I even found a chunk of some spice (maybe clove or star anise??) in my food, which was a bit of a surprise when I bit into it, but it was still good! The rice was on the dry side but I liked it and I think it's supposed to be like that anyway(?). The na'an bread was good at first but for some reason the more I ate of it, I started to not love the flavor. I think it just got to be too strong/ too much of the same flavor after a while. The two sauces were really great!!!!! One was a spicy cucumber yogurt and the other was a sweet reddish brown sauce. I found it interesting because I would have expected the red to be hot and the green to be the sweet one. I would definitely recommend the kabobs and their chicken tiki is the best in town no doubt. The lamb tiki is good too but a little too lamby for my taste. I have always gone to Little Delhi across the street which is temporarily closed so I thought I'd give Punjab Kabab House a shot. The prices seemed decent and so my friend and I were sat at a table quickly. The staff seemed a little bored and took a long time to take our order. I ordered my favorite dish which is chicken korma. I've eaten this dish all over many cities. The creamy sauce always fills a special spot for me. So to my surprise I was served a very red looking chicken dish. I and the waitress if I ordered incorrectly or if I was being ignorant. My friend ordered the vegetarian korma which had the creamy sauce and the waitress just told me the only creamy dishes they have are the vegetarian version or tikka masala. They very kindly offered to switch my order since the red sauces chicken, supposed to be chicken korma, was bland and not what I wanted at all. I apologized for assuming it would be the same as the many dishes I've had before and they changed my order to tikka masala. The food was bland even with the order switch. I've never had bland Indian food before. I will say that the way they handled my disappointment in the dish was so wonderful and they were kind enough to switch it quickly. If you want a quick bite to eat and are in the neighborhood I'd say give it a shot, but this definitely is not somewhere I'll be going back to often. read more

A little diner-style Indian restaurant on the corner, Punjab has a few things going for it: quick, easy to get to, cheap, and a great assortment of dishes to choose from. Since our favourite go-to place is still not open right now, we came here in the search for tikka masala (and other tasty options). We ordered paneer tikka masala, chicken tandoori, garlic naan and a side of rice and a mango lassi. As the restaurant wasn't busy, our food came out quick. The portions were pretty large and very good. I found the tikka masala sauce a bit thinner than I prefer but still had a good flavour overall and not too spicy. The prices are good and inexpensive (around diner-level) so this is a great option if you're looking for a quick and cheap Indian lunch while in the downtown area. If you're at Punjab Kabab House, you need to know what to expect. This is an Indian/Pakistani restaurant with the same type of decor, smells, and music playing at countless others around the country. Don't expect high-quality tables/seats; the water is served out of plastic pitchers and the silverware is super old. If you care about these things and they make or break going to a restaurant, maybe pick another restaurant. I think this is a great hole-in-the-wall, authentic restaurant where the food tastes like the food I've eaten growing up. Both of my parents and my aunt and uncle enjoyed the food and we went twice during our stay in SF. It felt familiar and comfortable to my parents. For an adventurer/explorer, I wouldn't recommend this place first. However, I do enjoy the ambiance and the food tastes good, but I think it's because it's what I am used to. We ordered the Tandoori Mix Grill. Food was kind of dry but with the raita, it is very enjoyable. It made me really sad that the chicken tikka masala (advertised as medium spicy) tasted just like chicken in the trader joes tomato soup carton (like eerily similar). It has no kick, no depth of flavour and was way way too sweet. That being said, the waitress was really kind and the second serving of naan was like a cloud of love (the first was flat and wasn't as fresh as the second). Overall, it was edible but not worth the price. There just wasn't the normal kick and spice flavour in any of the dishes and I was disappointed. The first time I came I was searching on Yelp and there were a lot of Indian restaurants in walking distance and none with really high ratings. Candidly, in a food snob and normally avoid restaurants with less than 4 stars. I'm glad I made an exception! I always get the Chicken Tikka Masala lunch special. Their lunch special is around $10 and comes with a vegetable (I get the spinach) and naan. That's an amazing deal in San Francisco! It's so much food I always struggle to finish it but because it's so delicious I alway do. Every time I order Indian delivery to my home it's always disappointing in comparison. Granted I've only ever ordered the one dish here but the chicken is moist, the sauce is flavorful and spicy and the rice and naan are perfectly cooked. I don't even normally like bread. I had naan at another restaurant this week and it was dry and tough. I'll add a review next. Very disappointing! Excellent! I love everything about this place. Our waiter was so kind and helpful with the menu. He gave us great recommendations, and he always had a big smile on his face! - they have complimentary hot chai tea. It is DELICIOUS and a real treat to sip on as you wait on your food. - you also get a complimentary basket of a sort of crisp cracker with spices. It was wonderful! - BEST Chana Masala I've ever had! So flavorful without being overbearing, perfect amount of spice, and there was almost something creamy to it... I highly recommend it. - also the best naan I've ever had! My friends use to work near here, so they were the guinea pigs. They were always telling me how good and cheap the food was. I'm a fan of Indian curries, so I finally had to make my way down there for lunch. Its one of those restaurants where you order at the counter and grab your own utensils. I went with the Chef Special which comes with Chicken Tikka Masala, vegetables, rice and naan. They also have chai tea which hits the spot on a cold SF day. The food came out quickly, and the portion was very good. There is plenty of sauce to dip your naan, and I was quite stuffed after cleaning off my plate. The service is fast, and the food is cheap. I was super excited because with the first few bites of the tandoori chicken, the food was delicious! Spicy and not too greasy. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the disastrous. While eating a piece of onion naan, I bit into (and started unknowingly chewing) a goddamn USED BAND-AID that had been baked into the bread. This is the most horrifying thing ever. We had the beef kabob, chicken kabob, chicken karai, chicken tikka masala, tandoori fish, onion naan, keema naan, and garlic naan. Absolutely delicious food and beautiful restaurant setting. Our food didn't take that long to be brought out and we all really enjoyed every dish. I definitely appreciate how they offered the sweet red chutney and green chutney in the squeeze bottles. It's nice to be able to have as much chutney as needed and not have to worry about running out and waiting for more. It was not only convenient, but the two chutneys were made well. Typically, restaurants screw up the chutneys and make them watery and flavorless. These were perfect chutneys. This restaurant nailed it! The staff invited us to help ourselves to the complementary fresh hot chai available in the restaurant before we left. How sweet. It was a less than sober moment as I stopped into Punjab Kabab house to pick up some Naan, and an entrée to go. It was a long day of St. Patty's day celebrations, Brides of March and soon to be Pacquiao fight. I knew I needed some savory food to keep the engine turning, I opted for both the naan and garlic naan, some rice and a Kabab of some sort. It's in a sketchy neighborhood, so I don't advise carrying around your designer bag or briefcase. The food was just meh. It was served w/ basmati rice and lentils. I expected more from the curry chicken (since it made the list), but all that came out was a TINY baby of a chicken piece. I banked a little bit more on the tandoori chicken, but I tasted something of similar consistency to liver w/ one bite. Eyuk! I spit it out immediately. Even the logistics of the restaurant disappointed. Instructions were to order & pay @the register. We ordered our meals, but were instructed to pay after our meal instead. Our food & drinks were sent to us. Afterwards, we waited for our check, it never came. We didn't realize we had to go back to the cashier to settle the bill. It was a little annoying having to figure this out while on a lunch break. Despite these disappoinments, I have to admit that the Vegetable Samosas DID NOT disappoint. Came here because it was on the 7x7 list...one of my goals before I hit 30 (already failed because several places are CLOSED now...boo). The area's kind of hit or miss. Its closer to the TL than downtown, but weirdly is only a block away from Powell street BART. The area IS a little sketchy though, so don't flaunt your wealth! Lunch menu was pretty cheap. There was about 6 different items on there, with one vegetarian dish. I had the tandoori chicken, which was really good. I also had a bite of my friend's Curry Chicken (on the list!) and it was good. I think though, next time I'd go with Tikka Masala, cause I had a bite of that and it was good too. Naan comes with your lunch dish, although the dish comes with really fluffy and yummy rice. The service was nice, and the waiters come by to refill water and were really friendly. Free Chai table there for you to go up and get it yourself. Atmosphere is surprisingly nice. Looking out the windows, I thought I was watching TV or something, because the sketchy-ness doesn't really sink in when you're looking at it through the glass windows. Right at the edge of the tenderloin district on a corner, you can easily pass by this place without even realizing it. Small and unassuming, we found this place on yelp while looking for a dinner spot. Such a good choice. We ordered several dishes and what stood out were the chicken curry (I still compare other curryies to this one btw) and the prawns and rice. Everything we ordered was great, and the service was very good as well. Order the garlic naan and soak up the leftover curry with it, so good! Make sure to tell the rest of your party to order their own otherwise you'll be having to tell them no when they ask for some. They sell soda by the can which angered someone in our party but the rest of us were fine with it. I will definitely be coming back here and recommending it to others for sure. One note - pick your time wisely, we went pretty late and watched a police chase, beating/scuffle, and arrest outside the door of this place, we couldnt leave till it was done because it was literally blocking the front door. Certainly not western Punjab cuisine. Whichever cuisine this restaurant follows, it certainly is a very sad one. Sad because they have the knowledge of something called Biryani and something called Bhindi masala yet having no idea how to cook one. First, the service is not the fastest I have had and the longer it takes, the more I expect. Never had I had a bhindi masala cooked in so much oil and tomatoes (it is sweeter than a julab jaman). The bhindi itself is overcooked. Never had I had such a bland biryani which essentially is coloured rice with some boneless chicken with zero taste. It does not remotely resemble any biryani variation I have ever had. I love trying new Biryani styles and can differentiate between sindhi, lahori, bumbai and hyderabadi biryani. This is neither of them. This is not a Punjabi/Indian/Pakistani cuisine. This restaurant has spent more money on its decor than its taste. Just don't bother eating here. Walk a few blocks to Pakwan, Shalimar and other authentic restaurants. They will be crowded for a reason. read more

Punjab Kabab House - Overcooked, over tomatoed, over oiled bhindi masala. - Indian Near Me - San Francisco, California

I went there recently with a new group of friends. I was pretty new to the city so I had never heard of this place. I am also not very familiar with Indian food.... I asked the waiter who also seemed to either be the manager or owner to "please make me something, I am not to sure of what to order....". His response was very kind asking if I liked spicy food, what I would or wouldn't eat (I said I am not a fan of fish, love beef and a bit of spice was good). He said he understood and a bit later I was surprised by one of the best dishes I had. Curry covered "beef" with rice and other spices. The spice was warm enough to heat your mouth but it brought so much flavor to the "beef". He came back and asked me if I liked it and I was smiling it was so good! I advised him that the beef was so very tender etc etc... He chuckled and said, "Well, thank you, glad you like it" as I damn near was licking the plate. I asked what it was called and he laughed and said "Lamb Tikka Masala" - I would have NEVER ordered lamb! It was fantastic! I plan on taking my wife there next time we visit! read more

My friend and I stopped by because we were curious about the chicken curry special. The place isn't too hard to find although it's not exactly in the best location. The people who work there are nice enough. Service is pretty fast depending on what you order. My friend and I ordered the chicken curry lunch special to share along with an order of tandoori chicken wings to try. I don't think they're used to getting that order because it took them a while to get it out. The chicken curry special is huge and filling. It's worth it for the price you pay ($9ish). I wish that the chicken was boneless and that they put more chicken, but it was still pretty good. Lots of flavor! I liked the naan a lot too. As for the chicken wings, they were great! Tangy from the yogurt marination but it works! I'd go back for that. Overall, the food is okay. I think the chicken curry special is more hyped up for what it is although it is definitely a great deal. But I would suggest those tandoori chicken wings! read more
