Tara is one of our "go to" restaurants. It never lets us down. The food is terrific. We have our favorites--we like them so much that we rarely branch out, but when we do, we are always happy. We get the shrimp tikka masala, chicken saag or chicken korma, garlic naan, onion kulcha, and of course, the rice. The service is great, professional & friendly. Thts is a wonderful experience eating in TARA after long time. They are ubder new ownerahip but they brought authentic rest of northern indian and nepalese food. We booked a table for 1 pm but we got there early but they manage the table for us quickly. Inside the restaurant is very clean and restaurant wall painting makes look like india. Tara is a beautiful and intimate Indian restaurant that makes for a perfect date setting or dinner with friends . The interior is gorgeously decorated and has a cozy but upscale atmosphere . They have so many different vegetarian options available I ordered the Samosa appetizer, Mushroom Matar and Saag Aloo, which was my favorite of the evening . They also bring out a little crispy papadum with some dips for the table as a starter. Everything was delicious and lucky for me. You are able to customize your spice level. Tara used to be our favorite Indian restaurant, where we've ordered butter chicken and saag paneer every couple weeks for the last 7-8 years. But I've noticed that they've changed their recipes and things just taste different (and not as good) the last couple times. This would be 5 star restaurant if they went back to their old recipes. When i first moved to the city in 2018, I tried Indian restaurant after Indian restaurant until finally discovering Tara. We fell in love and didn't order from anywhere else after that. Even after moving to Marin in 2025, I'd time to-go orders for whenever I was in the City. Just tonight however, we ordered it and were crestfallen. It tasted noticeably bland and the chicken was so tough. I was bummed enough that I googled "Tara Indian changed recipe" to see if this was just a fluke or if I needed to steel myself for the loss of our favorite Indian restaurant, and I saw that a few recent Yelp reviews had noted the same thing. This used to be our go to Indian food and we've been ordering from here for over 10 years now. BUT we've noticed the last three times the decline in quality, either the curry was watery, the chicken was not cubed but shredded and this past time the curry texture was disgusting, tasteless and looked like it had milk curds which occurs when you freeze the curry. We're almost positive we got frozen/reheated curry because the chicken was hard and tasted old too! I've reached out the owner/manager but nothing. We're in San Francisco for a few days, and last night we had the great good fortune to run across this place for dinner. The restaurant itself is beautiful, clean and engaging. We were eating quite late (~9pm), but the staff behaved as though they had just opened! The service was quick, accurate and friendly, and the table was beautifully set. The food was very good! We ordered Chicken Naan, a Tandori Sampler and Chicken Biryani and shared the dishes. Good spice, and deep flavors. Everything looked and tasted wonderful! We highly recommend this place. We have walked past Tara soooo many times over the years, and for some weird unknown reason, we have never dined here. Boy did we miss out! Came in on a Saturday early evening just after they opened for dinner. The dining area is pretty small as are most in SF. Nice decor all around, and clean. Our servers, as there were a couple, were super friendly and explained everything we needed to know about the menu. Plus, they start you off with complimentary crispy roti and some sauces to dip into. Ok so now on to the food... We love our Indian food, and for us, spicy is always great. Our server did take the time to ask us too, which I appreciate! Chicken chilli - beautiful with a slight crispyness and tons of flavor in the chicken and the sauce. Coconut lamb curry - tender (melt in your mouth) lamb chunks in a smooth and flavorful curry sauce Saag Paneer - my benchmark. . . excellent, flavorful and tastes like it was truly wonderful with large chunks of paneer that you cut and swirl in the saag We ordered basmati rice as our base for the meal (did not need another flavored side to interfere with the other items) And, of course you MUST have garlic naan.. . this was crispy on top and still tender to pull apart and dig in to the sauces. The price was very reasonable for the quality and amount of food we were given. In fact, we sat there and ate waaaay too much at the table. After dropping off a framing lovely at Underglass, Mr & I saw the menu in the window of Tara and had to immediately go inside Tons & tons of veggie options made it very hard to choose or maybe I should say this made it so easy to decide to come back again & again This visit we chose the Paneer Tika Masala, Mushroom Muthar & Malai Kofta. I've been coming to Tara Indian for years now after it changed ownership and I can tell you that it is 100 times better. One of the best deals in Indian cuisine is their dinner for two but really it can feed four people for $50 I love their lamb vindaloo and I would tell people you can tell a lot about a restaurant by the quality of their meat as well as preparation methods and their lamb is very tender instead of chewy . I ordered a bunch of stuff to go; they were very quick to have it ready and they were smiling and nice when i went to pick it up. The naan: im often dissapointed with naan so.. today was the same. It was dry. And its not because i took it home because we had some in the car. I could barely taste garlic also but i suppose its hard to please every guest out there and picky ones like me. The somosas: they were good. Spicy. My nose was running. Chickpea stew: very tasty and not too spicy for me. Yum. Malai kofta: the sauce is very good. Creamy like chicken tika masala but the balls themselves were not my favorite. Thats preference though and im sure others like it. I'm glad the first spot we went to didn't take dine-in because we ended up at Tara! I wouldn't say it's a hole in the wall but you wouldn't imagine what it looks like on the inside from the outside. We step in & it's beautiful, feels intimate and cozy, just overall welcoming. The staff are very kind and patient and have no problem explaining anything we had questions about on the menu. We decided to try the Garlic Naan with Saag Paneer and Lamb Biryani, we were served papadum which I never had and it was simple yet delicious. The flavor in each dish really popped out, the lamb was the right texture, the spices were just right & the naan was still freshly crisp with a balance of softness. Came here on a Sunday night with a friend, was pretty empty, parking really easy close by. I got the kadai paneer, spicy, with a butter naan. They gave complimentary papadam as well with sauces and that was tasty. The naan was very fluffy and chewy, and the kadai paneer was flavorful. Paneer was soft, lots of onion and pepper in it too. I haven't had Indian cuisine in a hot minute. I saw that this place had pretty decent reviews so I wanted to give it a chance with my date. The restaurant is moderately spacious with high ceilings and good lighting. The menu is extensive. Although it wasn't particular busy, they had a stream of take-out orders the entire time we were there. We ordered the Vegetable Pakora, Lamb Rogan Josh, Basmati Rice, and the Paneer Naan. The Pakora was crispy and flavorful - I could probably eat an entire serving by myself. The Lamb Rogan Josh was rich, had the perfect amount of spice, and the lamb was tender and juicy. I've never had Paneer Naan before, made me think of an Indian cheese pizza (sort of, not really). It was good, but Garlic Naan probably would've been fine. It was the perfect vessel to scoop up the lamb and the rice. The service was friendly. I love the music videos playing on the TV in the background. It was entertaining and hilarious because those videos are wild. I didn't feel like we were rushed and I really enjoyed my experience overall. They even give you a 15% discount on your meal, so make sure you leave a huge tip. 10/10, not only would I return to this place in the future, I actually can't wait to go back and try their other dishes. read more

Lockdown has its benefits including no-guilt delivery from white tablecloth restaurants like Tara Indian Cuisine. We over-ordered and thoroughly enjoyed five meals: Luscious Chicken Korma in a rich cream-based sauce, Tandoori Chicken, Saag Paneer, appetizer Palak Pakora and Kabuli Naan. I always hesitate to order Tandoori chicken ($12.95) because, in my experience, it's usually dry. Not here! Juicy, flavorful and perfectly spiced, I'd order this again in a heartbeat. Favorites were Saag Paneer ($11.95) with big chunks of delicious farmer's cheese perfumed by savory fenugreek (they could've used a heavier hand on the seasoning but I really like fenugreek) and the chickpea battered Palak Pakora ($5.75) which should be the only way you ever eat spinach again! Even the cooling Raita ($3.25) had spices in the yogurt which gave it a delicate flavor and enhanced everything I paired it with. Mango Lassi was delicious though I wish it'd been colder. I asked for it to be packaged separately from the mains but they weren't. Roomies voted on Indian so we found something on Uber Eats to try. Tara seemed promising, and overall is a solid choice for Indian in The City. Due to a promo, we went with 2x Chicken Tikki Masala and 2x Chicken Curry. The tikki masala is what you'd expect - a tomato cream chicken whereas the curry had more of a kick and had a more oily texture. Portion size on both were similar and expected for the area - not very large but probably designed to be eaten with rice or naan. We also got the stuffed naan which was a bit of a letdown as the "stuffing" is super super thin. Like so thin, we're not even sure if it there was stuffing but I think after much deliberation, we agreed that it's just a really really thin stuffing. Probably better off just ordering another entree than going for any protein content on the stuffed naan. The samosas were also really good - though I totally forgot about them the night of so I ate the leftover reheated version the next day haha. Overall, Tara solid! read more

I had the garlic naan with my dish and it made it 10 times better. We also had samosas for the appetizer. It was very hot only came with two kind of mid.
