Mmm, sometimes you just get that serious craving for chips and salsa. And a side of enchiladas to go with 'em, of course. So over the weekend I took the husband on a date to Chuy's, and we definitely left with our craving satisfied. Our waitress Ana was amazing! Food took a little while but she was super gracious and hooked us up with a bunch of salsas -- even packed up a fresh bag of chips to go at the end of the night! I got the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo with flour tortillas - an excellent sampler plate that came with three different kinds of enchiladas, rice, beans, a crunchy taco, and some cheese-covered taco chips. Obviously, with that much going on, I couldn't finish all of it, but hey, two meals for the price of one! The food is very flavorful and the portions are huuuuge -- I always get my enchiladas made with flour tortillas because, you know, Tex Mex isn't unhealthy enough as-is, ahahaha. PLEASE - I beg of you - do not write Chuy's off as just another "On the Border" or (gasp) "Don Julio's"...and it's definitely better than Uncle Julio's! I implore you to look beyond the cheesy (but fun) interior decor and focus your eyes, ears, and nose on the food! Oh, and if you're in to fun and pun-filled t-shirts, you will LOVE their shirts available for purchase; they're so fun! Chuy's really goes beyond the "chain" Tex-Mex places, in my opinion, by offering consistently great service, a cleaner environment, fresher chips (not too thin/salty/greasy), better-prepared and executed entrees, and a whole SLEW of amazing homemade sauces with which to smother your enchilada, burrito, tacos, etc. You must also look past the fact that this Chuy's location is in a building that used to house a Chili's. The only thing Chuy's MIGHT have in common with a Chili's is the fact that back in the day, Chili's used to be known for pretty damn good fajitas...and in my book, Chuy's takes the fajita crown from ALL the Tex-Mex places in the Mid-Atlantic Land! Sizzling, steaming, fresh, flavorful, tender, and super-affordable; do the chicken and steak combo! Best of all, you don't have to pay extra for cheese, sour cream, guac, rice, beans, and tortillas. You also have your choice of made-right-away super-fresh flour tortillas or a flour-corn blend (note to gluten-sensitive friends that their corn tortillas are not 100% corn). Okay, so you all know I LOVE authentic Mexican food, but I also have a special place in my heart for the legit Tex-Mex cuisine. They are two different things. Don't get it twisted. You can love and appreciate both types of Southwestern and South-of-the-Border goodness, alright? Chuy's is definitely the Tex-mex route, so don't come here expecting "street tacos" with lengua or pastor, or more Central American dishes such as pupusas or lomo saltado. Recently, my school had an event for parent outreach, which required a catering order with a limited budget. I reached out to Chuy's for a catering order for approximately 100 people. I knew with the budget we had the possibility of finding a company to provide food for a large number of people would be challenging. When I contacted Chuy's manager, Curtis, he immediately expressed interest and a desire to help our community efforts. Chuy's not only honored our limited budget with a partial donation, but they helped us along the way, even by loading the food in my car during the pouring rain. Hearing that Chuy's was coming to town was like hearing that Santa clause would suddenly come to your zipcode after you moved out of his delivery range. No longer do I have to weep at the inedible "queso" (sometimes you even get canned cheese) that most texmex restaurants try to pass off. No longer do I have to say with such forlorn how moving to NOVA has put us in a dearth of texmex food. The food is ridiculously cheap if you compare it to many chain texmex restaurants. Why? Because they make nearly most of their stuff from scratch - the way almost all texmex restaurants do in Texas. The way that you should! How hard is it to make up a batch of pinto beans and make them refried? Apparently difficult given that almost no one around here does it. From the handmade tortillas, fresh salsa, crispy fried homemade chips, and deliciously prepared entrees, be prepared NOVA! We came in on the third day of opening and I was worried that there would be a lot of kinks to work out. I think it's only fair to give any new restaurant some time to get their legs under them. I was happily surprised to see that they were a) packed b) the manager on staff was doing a great job of informing customers of their dishes and c) the waiter was on top of his game. Even better was the fact that this place transported us back home to Austin. Oh how I miss you. The joy I felt after feeling my belly stretched from so much great texmex was heaven. I weep openly for your taste buds, all of you who cannot stop raving about this place. I assume this SouthEAST chain is the height of experiencing other cultures for you and you use words like "fresh" and "authentic" and "on point" in your reviews, because of course you do. The kitschy back quarter of a car with free chips and crummy salsa (and what is that ranch sauce??) REALLY attracted a lot of comments ("Oooo, honey, look at the car, isn't that neat?"). No. No it is not. The queso was shaverage (that's somewhere between shitty and average). The steak burrito I had was OK, although I prefer mission style burritos. There's a lot of steak in there, but the flavor was shmediocre. The "spicy Hatch Green Chile sauce" wasn't. The beans sucked. Here in The Land of Shitty Drivers I am becoming reluctant to trust your opinions of anything that should remotely be considered ethnic food. Chuy's is a chain Tex Mex restaurant that is making it's debut in the NOVA area. We came here for an early dinner on a Saturday night. With the amount of people waiting when we arrived, it didn't look promising. To our delight, we were seated immediately. Not bad for two people coming at 6:00 pm on a Saturday! A server brought out chips and salsa. Salsa was tasty and on point. Fresh and just the right amount of heat for my taste. Our server came and was attentive throughout our night. He brought out samples all 12 of Chuy's signature sauces for us to try which I really liked. It's one thing to read the descriptions on the menu but then trying them (just like many things), takes it to a different level. My favorites were the boom boom sauce, creamy jalepenp, tomatillo, deluxe tomatillo, and green chile. We both ended up ordering combos: I ordered a combo with enchilada, taco, and chicken chalupa. The combination platter also came with rice and refried beans. I really liked my platters. Each item was tasty and seasoned and complimented each other well. The chicken in the chalupa was seasoned well and not dry! Imagine that. My fiance ordered the taco and chicken chalupa combination with guacamole. I managed to steal a bite of guacamole and I'm glad I did. It tasted very fresh and it was also well seasoned. The vibe is typical for a Tex Mex restaurant; bright, colorful, and family friendly. Service was good throughout the night. Our waiter apologized when we found a mistake on our bill and immediately addressed it. I am bummed that I missed out on the nacho car. Now, this is proper Tex-Mex! I was soooo happy to see Chuy's open in NoVa, just 5 minutes from my house in Fairfax. I lived in Texas for 20 years, so I'm very familiar with Chuy's in Houston and in Austin where I went to school. This place is an institution down in Texas! We are lucky to have them here. I was here last night for the first time (Tuesday night at 8pm), and were seated immediately for a table of 4. For you newbies, make sure to ask for the JALAPENO RANCH dip with the chips if they don't bring it out on their own, it's absolutely heaven! It's absolutely freaking amazing! I had the shrimp enchiladas for my meal (this is not on the menu, but they can make it. I know this b/c I'm a Chuy's veteran). The enchiladas, the beans, and rice were all spectacular! Everything was fresh and so tasty, I was not disappointed! It was just like I remembered from Texas. I will definitely be back often since they are so close to me. Color me surprised when my friend brought me to this place. When I was still living up in NOVA, there was literally nothing to eat in this general area. Other than like Tippy's Taco (which I don't even know is still there), there was nothing to eat unless you ventured over to Fair Oaks, the stuff all over 50, or went to Costco for $1.50 pizza. It always excites me to visit NOVA, and there's evidence of actual progress beyond another TGI Fridays or $65 Fogo de Chau/equivalent dining establishment. Anyway, they're on 29, right near the 29/50 intersection, across the street from where the dying (if not already dead) K-Mart used to be, and where the Borders used to be. As part of a larger shopping center, there's plenty of available parking. From the outside, I'd have to describe Chuy's to be like the Mexican-inspired equivalent of what TGI Friday's used to be, meaning doofy colors and weird esoteric crap all over the walls. The cliched zaniness continues on inside, and from what I understand, there's an Elvis shrine inside of it, as well as all other Chuy's, although I didn't really care enough to seek it out. The first thing I noticed was the array of company t-shirts that I have to admit are a little more creative than your average dive's attempts at apparel, albeit slightly skirting the lines of parody and copyrights. Regardless, my friend and I were seated promptly, and they had no problems with the fact that we were going to wait on others. Service was extremely polite and friendly, and very attentive to refill frequently the chips we were destroying at a rapid rate. It should be mentioned that Chuy's house salsa errs on spicy, which is a pleasant surprise, differing from the generic and watery salsas that can be had at any other Mexican joint where you can order by numbers. My friends eventually arrived, and we destroyed more chips, on top of actually ordering food. What was told to me was that they had burritos the size of my head, and they even had such description printed in their menus. Naturally, being a fan of burritos, this is precisely what I had to have. Ultimately, it was far from the size of my head, despite the fact that mine is, as I like to describe, melon-like and equivalently sized, but it was still a very generous portion. Combined with the four baskets of chips that my friends and I destroyed prior to entree arrival, it was more than enough food to leave me feeling remorseful for how much food I stuffed into my mouth. But it was all so good. So very good. And in the end, split checks show to me that I owed a scant $10 and change (no booze or soft drink, just water). The old gods bless NOVA and their sub-5% sales tax. Throwing in a tip, it's an easy, good quality, filling lunch for under $15. Overall, I can't say I had a single complaint about this experience. It's in a decent location, ample parking, super effective and attentive service, and at a price point that leaves me scratching my head if I ripped someone off. As far as Fairfax County goes, I think I have an idea of where I might actually request next time I'm with friends up there. read more

This review is for the Curbside To Go service & food. Last night my husband and I picked up two combo meals and brought them home. We were told when calling in our order that it'd be ready in 15-20 minutes. We got there 15 minutes after I placed the call and the food was waiting for us, score! When we got home everything was labeled as to what meal it went with so we had no problem sorting who got what. I ordered the Combo meal #1, Comida Deluxe. It's a lot of food, but I figured this would work great for having something to bring to work for lunch the next day (today). Perfect plan. I ate the chicken flautas, crispy taco, charro beans and some chips with chile con queso as well as this white and green sauce. The white and green sauce has some heat to it but I love the flavor. My husband wasn't a fan of the sauce so I took his and traded him my fresco sauce (salsa). I wasn't a fan of the fresco but he thought it was great. The charro beans come in a liquid sauce. They have a tomato based taste. I was looking for something a little different and will try the refried beans with my combo next time. The mexican rice is pretty standard mexican rice. I've been day dreaming about the chicken flautas and taco while at work today. The flautas dipped in the white & green sauce were AMAZING!!!! They just hit the right spot for me last night. I don't know the name of the sauce but the container was labeled with what looks like a CJ. For lunch today I ate the two cheese enchiladas. I ate them cold...because I'm lazy and didn't feel like heating them up. Don't judge. Even though they were cold they were pretty tasty so I'm sure they would have even better last night while they were hot. We're adding Chuy's to our list of places to grab dinner from. We can't have too many of those since we have a baby and both work full time. Next time I'm going to get the Flautas or Tacos meal with an order of the white and green sauce, if I can. Mmmmmm! Amaaazing. So there's free nacho bar during their happy hour which is super exciting. I wish they marketed the nacho bar being for more than just the bar area because we had waited so long for a table to get up though. We ended up sitting in the dining room and our server told us we could grab nachos too if we wanted. Their drinks are pretty good, and they have good HH prices too. They also serve chips and salsa. The service was quick and everything was really well portioned. There is a lot of seating and room in the dining area, the bar is more cramped though. Definitely wanna come back! read more

I had heard alllll about Chuy's from some friends of mine that originate from Texas. I could not believe the news when I heard that this place was coming not only to VA, but literally to my backyard! My husband and I ventured to Chuy's on a Friday night about 2 weeks after they had opened for business. We were well aware that this place doesn't take reservations, so we had prepared ourselves for a potentially long wait. However, much to our surprise, as soon as we checked-in, we were offered an option of a table outside immediately, as opposed to a 30-40min wait for a table inside. Since it was a pleasant night out and we both had on our jackets, we jumped on the opportunity to be seated immediately. The patio wasn't huge, and felt smaller as there was one party taking up several tables for their large group. The service was prompt and attentive, which we appreciated. We started off with chips/salsa/the special jalapeno ranch fellow yelpers had raved about. I must say, neither my husband nor I were very impressed with this special ranch. Personally, I'm not a fan of ranch dressing, and this was pretty much ranch dressing with bits of jalapeno embedded inside. I suppose if you like ranch, then this would appeal to you, but I won't be partaking on this on future visits. The chips were warm, crispy, and seemed fresh. I was also a tad disappointed by the salsa, which was a bit more watery and tangy than I prefer. Now onto the good stuff. My hubby ordered the Baja Fish Tacos and I ordered the Vegetarian Enchiladas. My go-to dish at most tex-mex restaurants are veg enchiladas, and I make them at home frequently, so I feel like I'm somewhat of an authority when it comes to discriminating between a good, so-so, and bad enchilada. All I can say is that the Chuy's vegetarian enchiladas are the kind that your food fantasies are comprised of, they are THAT good. The enchiladas are stuffed with well-seasoned vegetables and that enchilada sauce is to-die-for. My hubby didn't think his tacos were anything to write home about and instead helped me literally finish every morsel off of my plate. Some days you need that TexMex fix, And you can settle every single one of those cravings at Chuy's! My bf and I decided to go out for a lowkey date night and had an overall great time here. We had a pager and it never rang although we sat right across from the hostess stand waiting, and when they called our name, my bf walked up, and said we were here and one of the gentlemen standing there asked us why we didnt go up when our pager went off. It never did and we explained that to him only to hear a rude side comment of, "well maybe you were too far away, we paged you guys" and when we said "we sat right there, not even 5feet from where we were currently standing he said "yeah okay whatever" Quite rude but I tried to dismiss it. Onwards to better things! Our server Dani was really nice, and was great during our meal. She helped us pick our dinner options and we werent disappointed. I got the baja shrimp tacos and an a la carte order of a chicken chalupa. The bf got an enchilada with green verde sauce which he loved. When I first got my food, and opened the wrapper, it was actually fish tacos. So after Dani came back I explained to her I got the wrong item and she apologized and put another order in, and she kindly updated me about my food along the way. The tacos were delicious. Everything else I've had here is just okay. The chips and dips are addictive and I could hang out just eating chips all afternoon. The margaritas are uber sweet, but delicious. They have NO draft beer which instantaneously drops the star count on this one for me. So, to be fair, I'm not really a tex-mex fan mainly because of the spice factor. This may be the only restaurant in NOVA where chefs know how to deep fry a burrito with a crispy outside and gooey middle and drench it in a delicious sauce. I'm originally from Austin so eating Tex-Mex in Fairfax, surrounded by Chuy's eclectic (but tasteful) decor, with its colorful tiles, textured paintings, and hubcap-covered ceilings, was like coming home. My friend and I came here on Sunday afternoon. We were seated immediately and were provided quick and attentive service. I had the bean & cheese Big as Yo' Face Burrito and a strawberry margarita. A food coma never tasted so good. They gave us so much food, it'll take us days to finish it off. The sauces for the chips were also delicious. I'm so excited to have a fresh Tex-Mex place here in Fairfax. I heard good things from Texas friends, so my husband and I decided to try out Chuy's for lunch on opening day. Our server was super attentive (almost overly attentive) since everything was so new. The chicka chicka boom boom enchiladas were delicious! And apparently you can order the boom boom sauce on anything you want for an extra dollar. The creamy jalapeño dip is also delicious and free. Opening week! I knew it would be a mad house, but we thought we'd try it anyway. The place was very festive and somewhat loud. I figured there would be some issues since it was the first week and the first Friday, but things went well. We ended up sitting in the bar area which is full service. Everyone enjoyed their food. Decided to check this place out for happy hour based on a Washingtonian article for Best Bites, and I'm SO GLAD I did! 5 minutes into our visit, I had already declared it my favoritest happy hour. I mean - frozen mango/blood orange/strawberry margs + complimentary taco bar out of a car trunk ... how can one go wrong? On top of that, the food is actually good - including the complimentary taco bar. Apparently this is due to the fact that they don't have a freezer on site - meaning ALL dishes are freshly prepared on a daily basis. You can really tell the difference! They have an extensive menu, of which we only taste tested the chicken enchiladas. The chicken was well seasoned and tender, with a little bit of a kick. The portion size was large enough to sufficiently feed both me and my friend but, to be fair, we had also filled up on the taco bar earlier in the evening. Service was fantastic - everyone was welcoming and in a good mood - they seem to really take pride in their jobs, and have fun with it. The atmosphere was friendly but overcrowded and standing outside isn't conducive to very hot or cold temperatures. The tightly packed tables makes you feel like you're sardines in a can. Food was the real let down. We ordered steak fajitas. They came out wrong originally and placed the order again. I asked to sample their spicier salsas - awful. Queso was ok. No awards here. Our waiter was nice and so were the staff. However, I can't justify spending $35+ on food when we left most of it and ended up having to grab something else later. As a native Californian, I never knew what Tex-Mex was. Since real Mexican food is so hard to find around here, we figured we'd try Chuy's. I'm glad we did! I had to remove my expectations of Mexican food, and just take it at face value. As soon as I saw and tasted my food, I thought "OH! So THIS is what Tex-Mex is!" It makes sense - it's Mexican food, with a huge slant toward ... Texas (I'd have to assume). If there was a high-end Taco Bell, this would be it. Their creamy jalapeño chip dip is so yummy! Different, but yummy. The restaurant is LOUD! People are crammed close-ish to each other, and there's a lot of volume. The nacho bar wasn't all that great. It's something I could put together at home without much effort. Their margaritas were excellent! Squeezed citrus instead of synthetic/chemical-laden sweet & sour. Because my family deals with food allergies (gluten & dairy), I googled ... while our allergic person was eating the chips... and realized the chips are cross-contaminated with gluten. Dang. :-( When I mentioned my family member's allergies to our waiter, he admitted his ignorance (good first impression) and checked with the manager about our attempt of an order. We find that fajitas and tacos tend to be a safe bet in Mexican restaurants. We realized their meat is marinated in beer (gluten). But thankfully the manager said he'd make sure the chef used non-marinated meat. And we got corn tortillas, which are made in the restaurant (yay!). It worked out perfectly! The next time we went back, our waiter didn't admit any ignorance, and he promised to follow our request (from what we'd learned the previous time). Unfortunately he delivered marinated meat and flour tortillas. :-( So... I give this 5 stars as a Tex-Mex restaurant. And if you're dealing with allergies, I'd suggest going elsewhere (as we are now choosing to do, when we have our allergic person with us). read more
