Cute decor! A family-friendly restaurant with happy hour combos. The portions are quite filling, even if you order the happy hour specials. I love the various drinks as well, such as the pandan coconut coffee. They always offer a lot of bean sprouts with the pho options. At the end of the meal, you get a mini ice cream cone. Lots of street parking available at the front but you'll need to check for the time restrictions. There's also a lot at the back but it's not covered. For those with small children, they only have two booster seats so plan accordingly. We went Friday May 15 but there was a sign they said it will be closed Friday and Saturday . We were disappointed and befuddled ... it was bizarre , did something happen ? Does this mean they will open on Sunday -- May 17 ??? We were on the area Sunday May 17 about 515pm and to our amazement it was open and packed with diners . There was a line up and we were third in line and worried we wud not be seated by 6pm and not qualify for the $10 pho. Luckily by 5:30 pm we got a table and got our delicious pho by 5:50 pm ... Meanwhile the line got longer. It's great marketing they do this and helps builds them a wider diner base of both Asians and non Asians ( mainly invisible minorities ) I observed the dines were 90% Asian and 10% non Asians. I noticed these so called Invisible minorities did speak English but with some sort of Eastern European accent and continued rambling amongst themselves in their dialect , loudly as common with first generation immigrant. . I love it here. Such a beautiful mural and great dining on Hastings! They have some great daily specials and happy hour pricing so definitely check them out. We ordered the grilled pork belly - This is supposed to be recommended for two people. Good amount of food and nice flavouring. I do wish there was more lettuce for the "wraps" but it was very refreshing. We also got pho and spring rolls. Chao Mami is def more hip and modern than most traditional Pho places. Though decor is chill, their chairs have no back support and awkward for hanging the winter jackets. Service is 5 stars with young friendly and efficient staff. They offer different lunch special on weekdays and their happy hour specials include a $10 Pho option. I personally prefer Pho from more traditional Vietnamese restaurants with more rich tasting broth. I would be curious to return again during lunch and try their rice dishes. Happy hour menu is from 2-6pm with cold drinks options and appetizer specials such as duck sliders and spring roll. I had the HH beef pho and it was a good size, served hot which I like, no complaints. The Mami Spring rolls were a bit greasy for my liking, felt it wasn't fried at the right temperature to absorb all the oil, filling rather plain and lack of seasoning. Pandan Coffee was super weak, could not taste much coffee nor pandan, more like watery icy milky water. Tre Colour dessert was not sweet, presentation was pretty but all I could taste out of the three layer was the red bean. Can't go wrong with spring rolls, and this one had plenty of meat juices. The crab roe soup noodles were flavoursome with great seafood umami but was not too rich. A rarely seen 48h braised beef shank was bold and rich which went perfectly with the white rice. Giving 2 stars already feels generous. The $10 Friday deal is a decent price, but don't expect much from the noodles -- they're really not that good. What's worse is the wait: it took about 45 minutes just to get two bowls of bún bò huế, which is honestly ridiculous and shows very poor kitchen time management. On top of that, the servers always seem to be in a bad mood. They frown at customers' questions and even make you feel guilty for asking for something as simple as water. If the staff can't handle the Friday rush, then either hire people who can, retrain the current staff, or stop doing the Friday special altogether. Nobody wants to deal with that kind of attitude on a Friday. read more

Formerly 'Broken Rice' the kids took over their parent's restaurant and brought it back to life. The interior is a lot brighter than it used to be and I love the bright mural inside and the big window that opens in the summer. We came here to celebrate our mom's birthday and ordered family style. Every dish was delicious, but if you're having a hard time choosing I say order the following and you won't be disappointed: Butter beef carpaccio: there was so much flavour and the tanginess of the red onion paired well with the soya butter sauce. Garlic butter chicken wings: the outside is crispy, inside is juicy and they're smothered in garlic butter. There's also the option of spicy fish sauce. The food is fine but the chairs are not. They are meant for tiny bums. If you have (pre) existing (lower) back problems, I don't recommend dining in as the chairs may trigger the pain. I'm still dealing with lower back pain even after 1 week plus after sitting on the chair. I knew the chair was small as it only supported half the butt and could feel the discomfort immediately upon sitting. I continued sitting as I didn't want to make a fuss plus I didn't know it will cause me to have lower back pain after an hour of sitting. Until they change the chairs to one with bigger or regular seats, I will not be dining in. My friends said the chairs are uncomfortable but they didn't have any pain like I do. So I figure it will only affect people who already have issues with their lumbar or need better support. I had the happy hour pho and pandan Vietnamese coffee. Both were good and good value during happy hour. Get the rare beef on the side if you prefer partially cooked beef. read more

Looks like this place has rebranded (same family owner) and is now less formal and more hip and casual. Liking this new change. The interior is so much brighter than their previous iteration (Brokenrice). Staff are friendly and nice. As of the time of writing, they have a happy hour pho special ($10) 1400-1800 all 7 days. The bowl size is equivalent to a "small" or "regular" pho at other places, which is reasonable. The only catch is that this price doesn't include the usual fixings (bean sprouts, jalapeno, basil) which is $1 more. But for $11 I really can't complain. Broth is tasty and solid, and the steak and pho are good quality. Going forward, I think this is my new go-to. One other thing worth mentioning - they have authentic Vietnamese beer here. $4 during happy hour, $6 outside. Who doesn't like cheap drinks. These beers (Bia Siagon, Truch Bach) aren't sold at the government stores. I haven't seen these at all outside of Vietnam, so this place might be worth a visit just for the beer. Chao Mami just opened. It was the old Broken Rice restaurant in Hastings. The children took over and re-opened it. It is more vibrantand bright inside. The Mami's real Tomato Crab noodles was really good. The soup was flavorful but still 'clean' so it's not overpowering. There was plenty of noodles and crab meat balls in there. I'd recommend it. We got the garlic butter chicken wings. They also have spicy fish sauce flavor wings too. The wings were crispy on outside and juicy on the inside. The garlic butter was good, although it didn't cover the whole wing. The coconut shrimp cakes had a nice crispy outside, and softer coconut rice filling. You taste the coconut but not so much of the shrimp as the topping is minced shrimp pork. You taste more of the pork than the shrimp. Service was excellent. we got a table for eight on a friday at 5:30 pm. note, chao mami does not accept resos for happy hour. the second-gen nguyen siblings have given this spot a fabulous makeover, transforming broken rice into the vibrant chao mami. this neighbourhood gem in the heights has shifted to a more casual vibe, complete with energetic, loud, bumping music, a fantastic mural honouring their chef mom, and a killer happy hour. despite the place being absolutely packed, the servers were efficient and responsive, ensuring that our drinks were refilled promptly and that we had everything we needed. we started with the chicken wings, which were out of this world--deep fried to perfection, crispy, juicy, and smothered in a mouthwatering garlic butter sauce. next up was the coconut shrimp cake. while it was a bit of a challenge to get out of the cast iron plate, the taste made it worth the effort. some pieces came out perfectly, while others fell apart, but each bite had a delicious coconut crunch paired with meat and chili sauce. i couldn't resist their $10 pho, which came as a generous bowl of slippery noodles, round steak, sliced brisket, and beef balls. i leveled up to add the sugarcane shrimp, it tasted more like a shrimp ball, (i would skip this next time), and also added the bean sprouts, lime, basil, and jalapeno to round out this savoury bowl of beef pho. the lychee shake was an icy, slushy treat. the vegans in our party raved about their lemongrass tofu and vegetarian vermicelli dishes. there were a few mixed reviews, though--the shaken beef was reportedly a bit tough, and the saigon beef stew noodles was just okay. however, the lemongrass chicken on rice with a fried egg was a hit. one member of our family did mention that the chairs were a bit uncomfortable and the music was too loud (admittedly, carrying a conversation was hard to do, as we were competing with the music), but the $4 imported beer definitely helped balance things out. overall, it was a lively, fun experience. show chao mami some love and check it out for yourself. read more

Came by quite a few times after their latest renovation and it's been a delight every time. The hot and sour pho is truly delicious with a good amount of shrimp (8) in a flavourful broth. I love getting the sweetness of the pineapples in there too! The beef pho is super tasty as well with a flavourful broth and if you come during happy hour it's only $10!!! I heard about their rebranding on social media and had been meaning to visit and when I saw them on my Uber Eats page, I decided no time better than the present. Ordered their May $10 special: spicy lemongrass hue noodles plus Mami's famous spring roll, for a total of $15 before tax and tip. The spring roll was divine. It seems they use rice paper (I think) for the wrapper which I've only ever tried once elsewhere so perhaps this is the beginning of a new trend? It gives a lighter feel while maintaining a good crunch. The only negative here was it was a big greasy and placed in a small parchment bag, so oil soaked through that big plus the takeout bag itself. The noodle soup was well packaged and was a good portion size - broth was delicious and spicy (but not overly spicy for my weak spice buds) and there was a decent amount of toppings. the noodles could be a little more al dente but not a big deal. Woo boy. Amazing place! My wife took me here on a whim and I'm so glad for it. We sat at the table right next to a giant window in front so it was great for circulation. Staff is friendly and menus are right below the table glass so it's super easy. spring rolls - cha gio - these are to die for and worth the price of admission alone. They are crunchier but still done the traditional Vietnamese way ie rice paper. Pork three ways over broken rice - loved this dish. The pork chop was pretty flavourful and I loved the "meat cake" (could never find a common English word for it) which was substantial and had great texture. Strangely enough this is my first review of the place and I've been coming here for years. I've tried basically everything on the menu and every single dish has consistently been delivered to me with fresh ingredients and friendly service. The sliders are really good but I do find the bao buns a little doughy, but that's just my preference. Carpaccio is quite tasty, a little thicker than you will get at cactus club or similar and the pickled onions are nice on top. Chicken and shrimp brochette is good but shrimp is slightly dry My all time favourite has to be lemongrass chicken and egg. Husbands favourite is definitely the short ribs The chicken clay pot is different, I don't want to say it's bad, I ate the whole thing but with all the other items I just don't know if I'd order it again. Husband liked the shaken beef, I picked off his plate but it wouldn't be something I ordered but it was super flavourful Last time I went I had the vermicelli pork platter and kind of made it into lettuce wraps.
