Off the top of my head...the overall experience was pretty good after the staff confusion was sorted out. Our table was abandoned for a good long while until someone noticed us. If you're a fan of live music, dancing and a descent cocktail then this is your spot. The inside is detailed top to bottom with original Art Deco fixtures. Lots of history thats worth the google search. The food tho...while I'll admit was very well plated and presented didn't leave me with a feeling of wanting to comeback for more on a future date. Ive posted pics of the 3 course meal. The band that night was top notch! We really enjoyed the vibe and especially of those guests that go the extra mile to dress up in Zoot Suits and other mid-century attire. Overall: Ive been here twice now. Second time was for drinks and was disappointed to find out that Cicada doesn't offer any kind of small bites for those that don't want the entire dinner experience. Its a fun place to cut loose and feel like you've stepped back in time with friends and family. Its a "maybe" for me on a 3rd time visit, but I still recommend you try it for the experience at least once. read more

Dance the night away at Cicada Restaurant & Lounge in Los Angeles. It is an absolute gem and a must-visit. From start to finish, the experience was outstanding. The cocktails are expertly crafted, the food is excellent, and the desserts are just as impressive--everything felt thoughtfully done and high quality. I was so hungry I forgot to take pics of the antipasti. LoL! The staff truly makes the night special. They're amazing, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being overbearing. On top of that, the live band was incredible and kept the energy going all night. The venue itself is stunning and nostalgic, full of history and charm that transports you to another era. It's such a fun place for dinner, cocktails, and dancing, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in LA. I want to start off by saying that the food is a 3/5 and but my overall experience was a 4/5 because of the performers. We prepaid just under $100 for the meal plus the $25 for the show. The meal comes with three courses and I had the beet salad, butternut squash ravioli, and the strawberry cheesecake. The beet salad had an interesting presentation and taste. It was topped with hazelnuts and goat cheese. It was a different taste profile, but I didn't hate it. The butternut squash was okay, but the dessert was not good. I recommend going with another option. It was the worst strawberry cheesecake I've ever had. Drinks are pricey here, but where aren't they these days? I had the Mary Pickford and it was the recommended drink by the server. I liked the drink and it had just the right amount of alcohol in it. The dining atmosphere was great. You feel like you're in a different time. The music, singers, and dancers were fantastic. I would come back just for the show. A lot of folks were dressed. The theme that day was like a vintage summer Hawaiian theme. You don't need to dress with the theme, but the dress code is noted as "business, evening, formal, elegant" so make sure to dress for the occasion. read more

I celebrated my birthday at the Cicada with my wife, daughter and son-in-law. It was a surprise gift from my daughter. As you walk in the front door you are literally transported to 1930's Hollywood!! The food was gourmet and service impeccable!! There was live big band entertainment and dancing. We just went for the show Saturday night $30 at the door no Apple Pay. Credit card or cash only, pay at the door. My friends had dinner and said they had decent food and good service. $15 Valet parking or $20 self parking next door in an outdoor lot or street parking if you're lucky to find it. There aren't any seats downstairs for those without dinner reservations there are seats upstairs for those without dinner reservations including any black top table available is open to sit. Only a few black top tables had a view for the stage and dance floor all other seats didn't have a view. Douglas Rogiers was the performer for the evening and he was a delight. We dressed up 20's theme and had a great experience. Dress up highly recommended. read more

came to Cicada for a night of live 1920s-style music, and it did not disappoint! The band was fantastic -- great energy, vintage sound, and everyone was really into the vibe. The whole place feels like you're stepping into another era, with its gorgeous Art Deco decor and glamorous ambiance. I didn't eat dinner since the menu was on the pricier side, but from what I saw, the dishes looked well-prepared and nicely presented. We celebrated my husband's 50th birthday at Cicada Restaurant recently. My husband and friends/family had an awesome time! I communicated with Frank, the manager, for a couple weeks prior to the event, for a group of 34 and everything went smoothly throughout the entire night! Options for parking are $15 for valet and $10 across the street. The classy doorman at the entrance made us feel welcome and also provided a sense of security in DTLA. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were left in awe of the beautiful 1920's Art Deco interior of the restaurant. The building was built in 1928 and was initially used as a "haberdashery" (men's fine clothing store). The restaurant has been featured in movies and music videos. Everyone in our group had so much fun dressing like "The Great Gatsby" and "Peaky Blinders". While waiting for our other guests and seating time at 7:30pm, we had cocktails at the 2nd floor bar, took photos, and enjoyed our birdseye of the dance floor. Mary and Sally were awesome, attentive servers for our large group and I appreciated that immensely. I work in healthcare now, but I was a server when I was younger and I know its not an easy job. Some venues and restaurants don't do well with large groups, but I noticed that Cicada knows how to handle the flow very well. For my 3 courses, I ordered the ahi tuna appetizer, NY steak, and tiramisu dessert. I liked the ahi tuna and tiramisu. All of the food came out in a timely manner for our group. Since our tables were in front of the dance floor, we had so much fun watching the dancers! Looked like there were regulars who came often to dance, as well as professional dancers. It was really cool because they would occasionally ask individuals in our group or other patrons to dance. Even if you don't know how to dance, the vibe at Cicada made you feel comfortable. The band that night was "Ashley Anne and the Carnations" and they rocked it!!! FYI, the band stops at 11pm. All of my friends and family commented on how much fun they had and how much they loved the restaurant! My sister, my cousin, and my cousin's husband even told me that they want to have their birthdays at Cicada, too!! We'll be back soon!! Awesome Night out. Dress up and get into it, you won't regret it. We saw Alex Mendham and his Orchestra and they were great. Really had an old timey feel to it, fit the scene perfect. Some amazing dancers were there too so it was like a show for us. Our seats were great, 2nd floor looking down at the band we can see everything perfectly. Food was good, not the best I've had but they have a fair amount of options for the 3 course meal. Cocktails were all spot on but a little pricy (expected). Overall I would definitely come back to celebrate something again. The whole dinner was more expensive than I was thinking going in, but you can't put a price on a memorable night with my beautiful fiancé. We loved it. read more

Wonderful place, all about atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. The $40 admission for a show is a steal - the musical entertainment is aces, the room is gorgeous (and as authentic time travel as you're going to get), and the crowd is delightful (all ages, and not uptight, but dancing and having fun). For another $89 (to start), you can get a table with a three-course dinner. That's where the value prop gets dicey. If you're flush with money, it's a good investment to have a base to sit down at. And the food is better than you'd expect - and way better than you'd find at, say, Lawry's The Prime Rib. All of the dishes (Tartare di Tonno, Bresaola, short rib, torta al ciccolato, etc.) were done well, although the swordfish was overcooked. Food is a little salty, which makes their lack of offering you tap water a little more difficult. Drinks are stiff, which is a good enough deal (for their $20 prices), although their dessert of berries (only raspberries and blueberries, with no other accompaniment) was a little meager. The main craziness is their wine, which instead of a 3-4x markup is more like a 6x. But you go for the atmosphere, and they deliver that in spades - with the added benefit of having decent food, stellar music, and kind service. read more

Love, love, love this place! I made dinner reservations on a Friday salsa night. The cover charge was $25 and I had the Branzino 3 course ($ 95) dinner. Everything was perfect! The food, the music, the beautiful historic building- all made my night memorable. The only things I didn't like is the gratuity (18%) is automatically added to your bill and you're still charged a cover charge even though you are having dinner and drinks. Final bill for one person (3 course dinner, cover charge, 2 drinks, cappuccino, gratuity and tax) was $224. Fun fact, the dinner scene in the movie Pretty Woman where Vivian is eating escargot and says "slippery little suckers" was filmed here. And, this 1928 Art Deco building is called James Oviatt Building used to be a haberdashery. Before it was Cicada restaurant, it was called Rex II Ristorante. read more

We saw a show with tap dancer and band leader Chester Whitmore here. The show was amazing and so was the dinner. Don't worry about the location of your table because you're just going to get up and dance when the music starts! The atmosphere is like you stepped back in time. A real night to remember! I took a picture of the list and I'll have to try this later. The host was so happy to seat me with my friends. We've been here multiple times. Recently, the Jive Aces performed their swing and jive music. Dance floor was packed and we joined them. Also small dance floor upstairs. Many dressing up for the time period others not. Music was entertaining and fun. Tickets about $30 each. Do Valet parking. Dinner available; but upstairs is a nice bar with lots of seating if you're skipping dinner. Music stops at 11 pm. No need to get there early if you're not having dinner. Check site or call for type of music being offered. Open Fri, Sat, and sometimes but rarely, on Sundays. The building itself has a very long history. read more

In our party we all bought the package meal for $98, 4 out of 5 of us had read that a drink was include. The waitress said it wasn't and asked if we wanted to speak to the manage, the manager wouldn't even come to our table! We believe they removed that statement about the included drink, since it was also pictured as part of the package. I don't mind paying $98 for an appetizer, main meal and dessert..... but it better be excellent! There was melon with the appetizer and it was not ripe, I couldn't eat it. I ordered prime NY steak medium and I could barely cut it, so I sent it back and ordered medium rare, it was better but had so much fat on it that I couldn't eat it. I probably should have ordered something different. When I go to a restaurant the food should be better than I make at home!! Also, we couldn't see the show, the tables should have been scattered, not one table in front of another. Other than that, it was great. Will I return? Not unless someone else is paying the bill!! read more

Everything tasted good, but nothing was outstanding enough to make me want to come back. For Italian food, you can find better options at a better price--it's just not worth the money. What could have been a five-star evening was completely derailed by the sheer rudeness some of the staff--most notably the host/front door woman. Her behavior was appalling: arrogant, dismissive, and utterly devoid of hospitality. She was nothing short of horrid--arrogant, abrasive, and dripping with contempt. Zero hospitality. Zero professionalism. Not sure who she thinks she is, but whether owner or employee, she is the absolute last person who should be the "face" of a so-called high-end restaurant .Her behavior didn't just miss the mark; it obliterated it. A venue that trades on glamour and spectacle should understand that service is the experience--and this hostess single-handedly trashed it. If this were my establishment, I would have fired her in a heartbeat. For a restaurant that positions itself as "high end," the unprofessionalism was shocking. We've dined at unique, kitschy venues across the globe--including the world-renowned Magic Castle just minutes away--and never have we been treated with such disdain. Cicada has all the makings of an incredible night out, but as long as staff like this represent the face of the restaurant, the experience will remain subpar at best. If you like further details of the situation, feel free to contact me. Otherwise, its hard to recommend a place with this kind of front of house service. Many years ago, I took a Raymond Chandler bus tour of Los Angeles (a particularly good Groupon purchase circa 2010), and one of the shorter stops was a visit to Cicada, which was, I believe, very much closed at the time. We stood outside the restaurant and got a whole talk about its history and importance, almost all of which I have forgotten. The main takeaway was that the place was old and storied. I got to go inside Cicada last month, for a Great Gatsby-themed fundraiser for my kid's school. It was a beautiful venue with a strong, well-maintained art deco look, both inside and out. There were two levels, connected by stairs and a very cool, only slightly terrifying manual crank elevator. We spent most of our time upstairs, between the bar and our table, but got our food downstairs at the buffet and wandered through the dance floor. The bar was slammed, but I managed to drink a good deal of wine and maybe a Manhattan throughout the night. The food was adequate. I got a plateful of whatever was on offer. I feel like the meat wasn't great, but I filled up enough on the pasta, I think some mushroom ravioli. Cicada is more an event space than a restaurant these days, and I suspect no one is really coming for the food. We enjoyed our fancy night out without the kids, and the historic venue was a definite bonus. read more

I'd been to the Cicada before for performances and cocktails, but last night was my first time actually dining there. I'd wanted to see the Hukilau Hotshots at the South Pacific-themed evenings, so I rallied two of my girlfriends and we decided to splurge on a table and the prix fixe. ATMOSPHERE 5 STARS There's a reason why so many movies have filmed in this space. It's absolutely stunning. Enjoy the Lalique crystal doors and glass-ceilinged forecourt, the antique elevator, the comfy and glamorous upstairs bar, the Art Deco chandeliers, and the carved wood paneling and railings! ENTERTAINMENT 5 STARS The entertainment is always world-class, from Johnny Holiday to Dean Mora to the Hukilau Hotshots. If you enjoy swing dancing, vintage entertainment, big bands, and top-notch musicianship, this place is for you! FOOD 5 STARS I was pleasantly surprised. The dinner bread for the table was soft, flavorful, and addictive. My scallop appetizer was small but surprisingly flavorful with the corn/asparagus succotash. I loved my entree, which was the "Chef's special" of the evening--a seafood platter of small portions of salmon, branzino, and swordfish alongside mashed potatoes and spinach. And the chocolate flourless cake was out of this world--almost like a fancy KitKat bar, with lots of different layers and a very rich flavor and texture. DRINKS 4 STARS Standard drinks are solid here (my go-to used to be a dirty gin martini) and last night I enjoyed my Singapore Sling, which wasn't terribly tiki authentic but still tasty. SERVICE 5 STARS From the hostess station at the front to the elevator operators, servers, runners, and more, you just can't get better service. COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS 5 STARS They checked our IDs and vaccination status at the sidewalk before we got even close to the check-in table outside the front door. Masks were required when not eating/drinking--including on the dance floor. Our table had plenty of space around it and all servers wore masks. We arrived around 7:30/7:40 and got a drink at the bar before our 8:15 p.m. reservation. We stayed until the band played their very last song (11 p.m. or so?) and met some really nice people at the next table over. It was so fun to see everybody dressed up--whether in their tropical wear or in straight-ahead vintage or just formalwear. It's so rare to be able to get all dressed up for a night out on the town! It's not often I get to go to an art deco business that's been transformed into an entertainment space. It happens from time to time. But this is the first time I visited such a venue that was featured in Pretty Woman, The Artist, American Horror Story: Hotel, Man Men, and more things I've seen. My friends and I dressed to the vintage nines for a performance by Alex Mendham and His Orchestra. Our covid documents were checked at the door. I wore a mask whenever I left my table. It's been 6 days and I feel swell. Food was good. Drinks were good. The employees were great about getting us everything right and in a timely manner. They offered to take photos of us and that added to the "back in time" vibe I was getting. Minus one star to the business for the shock of a "service charge" of 18% on our total bill. That isn't the tip. This was an expensive night--over $500--and while it was worth it to see Alex (at $40/pop, paid in advance), the $79 three-course meal and about $20 each for drinks cost us a lot more than that. Two of us flew in from out of state to attend this event. Our state has no such law that allows restaurants to charge such a high fee. I hope we don't see it in the midwest, or if we do, that it is disclosed in advance. read more

Wow. Just so so so much fun!! Gorgeous from the get and immediately felt transported. We were meeting my husband at the restaurant and were told he was upstairs, which gave us the opportunity to check out the bar and top floor. The level of detail and care in buildings of yore is just gorgeous. The building used to be an upscale men's clothing store where men such as Clark Gable frequented. I couldn't believe how nice even a men's clothing store was crafted in such a time. The building is the star of the show for me and I think it's worth just purchasing a ticket for entry to enjoy the classic setting, ambience, and live music. We went to celebrate our good friends birthday so we opted to splurge on the dinner as well and I highly recommend if it's in the budget. Just be careful of ordering too many cocktails, as it adds up quickly!! It's $89 for the three course dinner and gratuity is included in final check. Unless you have a preference, request tap water as you'll be charged per bottle of water if not clear. Everyone started with a drink and was very pleased with the Penicillin. I'm a recently recovering alcoholic and was very happy that the bartender was knowledgeable to recommend and concoct me a beautiful mocktail to enjoy with my friends. We had a wonderful server named Dimitri who was at the ready to offer me recommendations and suggestions in ordering. With his guidance i opted for the ahi tartare, short rib, and berries. My friends and husband ordered caprese, short rib or scallopini and the strawberry cheesecake. The tartare was the star of the show for me, hands down!! The short rib was really delicious, even the vegetables were cooked well. No one who ordered the caprese had much to say, and the friend who ordered the scallopini wished she ordered the short rib. I personally was so full by the time the dessert arrived that I was happy to have the berries. The cheesecake was beautiful to look at, but not at all what one would expect when ordering a cheesecake. My husband was not a fan, too much strawberry. The coffee to finish the dinner was just perfect for me. If you enjoy music from the 20s-40s and are looking for a place to enjoy or find a space to dance, this is it!! It was a joy to watch others dance and join in on slower songs for those of us lacking in proper dance skills. Thank you to everyone behind this beautiful establishment, it was a true joy!
