Went last night for the Exoticion 3 event. Have been here before and of course the Ambience gets 5 Stars. Lovely joint... However, whoever manages Pacific Seas blew it big time. They knew this event was happening and only staffed one bartender and one cocktail waitress for the entire bar! And frankly because of her positive attitude and hustle, the waitress was the only one that almost saved it. There were no bar walk ups and even though we got in right after opening, our drinks took 45 minutes. 45 MINUTES! We could have walked to another bar, got drinks and came back in that amount of time. Not only that we left and came back later and they were playing DJ music from downstairs, totally killing the vibe of the Polynesian experience. (Even staffed up now the bartender still lagged). TLDR: For $350/couple, we got food poisoning (my partner) + no main course after waiting over an hour (me) + disorganization from every staff member My partner brought me here for Valentine's Day - they had a special event called "L.A. Romance." We got the Sunset Cruise package, which included a reserved table from 6pm-8pm, a "legendary" four-course dinner & dessert package for two, music, and other surprises. But, in actuality, we each got to choose an appetizer, a main, and a shared dessert (chocolate cake the size of a large apple). That's 2.5 courses - where's the 4 courses? Music was through the speaker system, not live (which to be fair, they didn't claim it would be). And no surprises other than the horrific experience we endured and never receiving my main course. The Pacific Seas host gave us the regular menu even though he knew we were there for the pre-fixe Sunset Cruise dinner. He did that with EVERY couple. If you know that we're here for this package, why do you not have these menus stocked up front? That way, we can look through the menu as soon as we're seated instead of twiddling our thumbs waiting for the server, who took 10-15 minutes to even acknowledge us! I actually handed my menu to another couple who were seated after us so that they didn't have to waste time waiting to get the correct menu. Drinks arrived AFTER appetizers were finished. My partner's steak arrived 20 minutes after our appetizer plates were cleared. I waited 1hr and 10 mins and my vegetarian pasta never arrived. No one came to check in on us and because we were seated between couples (elbow to elbow), we couldn't easily get in and out to wave her down. The couple next to us called the server over a couple of times to complain about their wait time and the server did nothing about it. They started waving down the manager to complain and even complained on our behalf. The manager, Matthew, threw a couple of drink tokens on our tables and said, "what do you want me to do? we're working on it!" After over an hour wait, I just couldn't wait any longer, so we decided to leave. I was starving by this point and just needed to find food, so couldn't even enjoy the rest of the offerings of that evening. We just went to a KFC drive-thru to get me some dinner. The next day, my partner had SEVERE stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting from the crudo he had here. He was bed-ridden the entire day and was still feeling stomach aches the following 2 days! Not surprised seeing how disorganized everyone was. Maybe me not getting my food was a blessing in disguise. Other notes: - At every table, one person would get their main dish, finish it, and then their partner's main would arrive - The woman next to me got her steak, sent it back because it was too rare, and then received another one and I never got anything - 3 people ordered soup and didn't get spoons - A lady was seated next to the steps and had to get up off her seat every time the server came around because they couldn't access the steps with her sitting down - Other couples waited at least 40 minutes for their desserts read more

This is a cool tiki bar, but the inconvenience of going through Clifton (the waits at the Clifton entrance AND Pacific Seas entrance once inside, as well as the $20 cover charge on a Saturday) in order to get to this bar and lounge on the 4th floor, along with the overpriced drinks inside Clifton, take away from the overall experience and make it far less appealing. That being said, visiting Clifton for the first time was kind of cool (exploring the quirky and mysterious decor and props, a maze of displays floor after floor), but yeah, lots of waiting here, club atmosphere with LA vibes... not my cup of tea... nice to have experienced it once though.  Pacific Seas on its own has a pretty great setup, diverse seating options, plenty of space (as they limit the number of people just on that floor), beautiful lighting and unique themed decor, even a boat right in the middle. Note, there are a lot of stairs here, and a lot of standing/waiting (for sure on the weekends, don't know about other days). read more

Went for their soft reopening on a Friday at 6pm in August. What an amazing treat! If you are a tiki enthusiast or appreciate vintage nostalgia this is the place. So much great decor and great drinks. Staff was amazing. Everyone from Elle greeting us upon arrival, the security guard, to the bartenders and even spoke with a manager there who gave us a brief history tour, everyone was so awesome!! Really bummed we forgot almost every single name, but hey I blame the alcohol. :) Even got take a peek inside Clifton's since we had never been there before. I really hope this entire place comes back to its full glory. Although I'm not a fan of crowds, this may have been the best way to experience the place before the crowds come back. We went for a sneak preview of the reopening of Pacific Seas at Clifton's. It is a beautiful space filled with tiki memorabilia from floor to ceiling. The drinks were pretty good though we had to wait a long time at the bar to get them as the bartenders were quite slow in making these labor intensive drinks. I'll chalk that up to them still learning the menu. And while they were quite tasty, I was quite surprised that I didn't feel any buzz from all that rum even after two drinks. And at $20+ dollars each, I expected more. The service was polite and the music was good but the seating was sparse and none of the seats we had proved to be comfortable. We spied a couple of areas that seemed a bit more cushy but they were taken by others. I look forward to the grand opening to see if things have improved! read more

Perfect for our group of 12, but we did come as a couple and had just as much fun! When in LA, you've gotta check out Clifton's and the Tiki Bar! A secret, not so secret, Tiki Bar inside of Clifton's Republic in downtown LA. On the 3rd floor of Clifton's, down a hall, there is a full body mirror. Push the mirror (if it isn't already open) and it opens to a stair well. Take the stair well to the top and enter the Pacific Seas. Very nice island vibe with a boat in the center. Seating is limited, FYI, and the lines can be extremely long and take quite a while. The bartenders do put in a lot of work for each drink, but the wait can be exhausting. But, if you want a tiki style drink, it's the only place in the building to get them. After you get your drink, there is an exit to the 4th floor where you can still listen to all the music being played in Clifton's by the DJ of the night. Great vibe and fun atmosphere. Didn't order food but will next time. I'm so glad the place hasn't changed since pre-closing. I'd been there about 8-9 years ago and loved it then, too. The decor and ambience is just as we remembered and it's always so fun just entering Clfiton's and wandering on up to the Pacific Seas. The bartenders are amazing! The tiki drinks were perfect and made according to recipes (clearly not pre-mixed or eye-balled). All of them were great (highly recommend the Bali Hai Swizzle, which we agreed was the winner) and they were strong. I was really only bummed that the tiki mug I wanted to purchase wasn't available because apparently other customers were stealing them. :( We'll go back soon, though! read more

If you haven't been to Clifton's Republic since they reopened, what are you even doing??? We went to Pacific Seas last night, and it is incredible! The theming is so perfectly done - which is enough reason right there - but I'd go for the cocktails if they were a truck stop bar. Of particular note - the Message in a Bottle - a coconut milk clarified cocktail full of rum, pineapple, and a banana walnut syrup that had that wonderful milk punch smoothness. If you can, I really recommend you try it! Anastasia was the host when we entered, and she was so amazing! The whole place is fantastic and transportative and wonderful - and Anastasia set the vibe for the whole night by grouping our 2 reservations and getting us into a table together even though we hadn't booked that way. I've been trying to support Pacific Seas since the first day they opened but they don't make it easy. They are now re-opened Thursday-Sunday but the website is outdated so you would never know. They don't answer DM's or email, either. I went recently on a Thursday. The decor is still gorgeous but what a disaster. Drinks have devolved over the years. My Zombie did not taste like any Zombie I've ever had. I was not pleased with it. The music is not Exotica (Tiki). Instead, I think they are trying to turn the space into a douchey club. The music was Brazilian or something. Employees had no idea what Exotica was. In fact, it seems like it is every employee's, "third day here." I understand it is hard getting employees to return to work, but at least give them some Tiki education! All my Tiki peeps keep asking, "Whatever happened to Pacific Seas?" It's always been such a mystery here. If they don't even advertise or update their site, I guess they have some sort of agenda. I've been hearing about Pacific Seas since it's opening and on speakeasy lists as well. As a fan of Clifton's, I had been meaning to go for months and finally had the opportunity one Saturday night after dinner for a nightcap. Upon entering Clifton's (and missing the cafeteria *wipes tear from eye*), it becomes a "where's Waldo" to find the magic mirror door to find entry! It takes awhile and I refer to my handy Yelp app (*no I don't get commission for the shout out*), but I then find the magic mirror that opens up to a black staircase. And can hear '40s style music echoing from the top of the stairs. At the top, voila! A dimly lit, 1940s' sounding, Pacific vintage (WWII) artifact encompassing tiki bar awaits your presence as you make your way around to the bar to choose your Poison. With the Singapore Sling as my choice, I seated myself in a Cosy corner taking a look at the small food menu (very salty and pricy), while shortly being approached thereafter if I'd like to order anything (I declined). A great, cozy little bar to hang out (with friends) & experience the heart of the vintage vibe DTLA has to offer at its historic theater district on Broadway. This was stop number 3 on our birthday bar hopping adventure on a Thursday night. I'm in love with this dimly lit tiki bar! It's located on the top floor of Clifton's past a mirrored door. I loved the kitschy island decor that's typical of tiki bars and the laid back uncrowded vibe. There were little nooks around the bar and an unexpected boat by the bar. You read that right. A boat. Service was excellent and Jasmine was our wonderful and personable server who whipped up our delicious cocktails. I loved her recommendation- Trade Winds which was not overly sweet. A truly delicious drink. I was told they have different events on different nights at Clifton's. We stayed for one drink and went downstairs to dance and scope out the rest of the place. I finally got in!! ************ What is Pacific Seas? Pacific Seas is a top notch tiki bar speakeasy located inside of one of the best bars/clubs in all of DTLA: Clifton's Cafeteria. This is a multi-story bar, and entrance to the Pacific Seas is up a flight or two. That's the only hint I will give you to find it, which is half the fun, anyways! Note that this place does not usually charge cover. Once inside, I found myself immediately impressed by the lighting and decor. This speakeasy, though not huge by any means, is decent in size. I enjoyed exploring the premises and taking in all the great decorations. This place is done very well. They weren't letting too many people in, so it never got too overly-crowded, which was nice. I am really a beer person when it comes to bars, but I felt festive and ordered the Navy Grog, priced at $14. The roots of this drink date back to a British Naval tradition from the 1740's! With Jamaican white and gold rums, lime, grapefruit, allspice, and honey, I was a fan! The people here were all generally friendly. I didn't get any stuck-up vibes and everyone seemed pretty down to earth. The bartenders were nice and easily accessible to order from. The ambiance and atmosphere were on point. I really enjoyed the shell necklaces they gave us on our way in. This is definitely the coolest tiki bar I have been to! If looking for a cool new place to try out, definitely head to Pacific Seas. After we had gone to the Tiki Ti bar the night before my friend took us to Pacific Seas at Clifton's. This tiki bar has much more room for lounging which is a plus. Our drinks were delicious, strong and not overwhelming sweet. I had a hurricane and my lady friends had the Negro Paloma and the ChiChi. We were all happy campers but i think the chichi was the most delicious and a smidge better that the one at the Tiki Ti. We were able to find a table to lounge at and enjoy the fun ambiance. We decided to head down stairs for our next drink. I wish we had stayed upstairs to be honest. I wanted a mojito and downstairs didn't have mint and I bet they did have it upstairs at the Pacific Seas. My next visit in L.A. will definitely wash me ashore the Pacific Seas. read more

Tucked away on the top floor of Clifton's, through a mirrored door manned by a pretty hostess. As soon as you step in, you can't help but be in awe. I've seen my share of tiki bars and this one really feels immersive.Tons to look at: props, wall art, even the thoughtful menus including history blurbs that really evoke a tropical vibe. Doesn't come off as too corny. Different places to sit, all with different vibes throughout the room. I couldn't help thinking that early in the night, it's great for a group pre-game or a date. The boat in the middle of the room/bar definitely caught our eye- we saw a DJ setting up around 9. I was into it. Only call-out is the mai tai we had- I may be biased since I am from Hawaii but it was more yellow than gradient pink/orange, super rum-heavy and light on the fruit juices or the standard dark rum float that comes with the typical mai tais I'm used to. But, it was true to the menu (picture/recipe) and I guess for those chasing an instant buzz it does the trick, so can't really gripe. Oh and there is a dress code. My friend got called out; a server mentioned she was surprised to see him pass through without having a collared shirt. Love it here. It's a super secret bar through a mirror door on the third floor. Everything is a tropical theme and it's great. There is a ship in the middle of the room so it does take up some seating space. Reservations are highly recommended otherwise it is standing room. Fresh citrus mixed precisely with house made orgeat, white rum, cognac, gin, and cherry," this was one strong mofo of a cocktail that had all sorts of flavors tossed around in your mouth as if you just wiped out on a back-breaking wave at Sunset Beach. Gin was the most noticeable of the bunch as was always the case, but once you gave it a few seconds to settle into your mouth and down your throat, it was calming like the white wash as it flowed back out once it hit the sand. PARKING (Varied; n/a this instance) I personally went Metro on the Red Line to the Pershing Square Station which was no more than a 10-minute walk away. Very disorganized place. We had a reservation, but it took them 10 mins. to seat us in a corner where we barely had space to sit. The table in front of us was full of dirty glasses, which they only cleared away part of after we requested it half an hour later. It seemed like no one even knew we were there, and we finally flagged someone down. Approx. 30 minutes later we still had no food, and then finally the group next to us asked if we had ordered fries and chicken skewers. We had, and apparently the waitress had given them our food. They passed it over, but by then they had talked over it, and it was cold. When we told the waitress, she said that was the last chicken skewer available. We just asked for the food to be removed from our bill, and she took it away. They were out of their specialty drink and dessert I wanted. A Mai Tai and Fogcutter were 50 dollars. Good drinks, but overpriced and definitely not worth the terrible service, trouble of going to sketchy downtown L.A and paying 20 bucks for parking. Very disappointing experience. read more

Loved this place! The first thing I look for in a tiki bar is atmosphere. This place has it covered! From the mysterious directions on how to try to find it once inside the building...to the actual inside of the bar once we entered, it was just fun. It's dim and exotic, the way a tiki bar should be. There really isn't all that much seating. We got lucky because there was no line (we were there early though, around 6:30 or 7 on a Friday) and we were able to snag a perfect table for a party of 3. I had read up about the dress code, and while I don't know if it would be strictly enforced, I made sure to wear a dress and some snazzy new heels I just bought (sparkly and black, more like booties, just got them at Wasteland that day, such a fabulous place...but anyway). As long as you don't look like a slob, you could probably get away with most anything other than tanks, flip flops, and that sort of thing. The feeling was friendly, not snobbish. I prefer to go all-out with a hawaiian dress, hair flower, shells, etc. when I go to anyplace tiki, but it was really chilly and rainy out and I couldn't even stand the idea of wearing open-toed shoes. So now on to the drinks, the next super important part of any tiki bar. First of all, I wish I'd gotten the name of our bartender, because he was excellent. He was patient and took his time answering our questions, describing the drinks, and making suggestions. I'm pretty picky about what I drink, especially when it's going to be roughly $15. For the first round I had the Tradewinds, which I enjoyed a lot. I was in a coconutty mood (I am usually in a coconutty mood). I do not like anything too tart/sour. I told our bartender all this, and he suggested several drinks. I didn't regret this one. I took a sip of my sister's navy grog and it was good, but quite a bit more tart than the Tradewinds. But let's talk now about round two. My, oh my, round two! All three of us had the Painkiller. To give you an idea how much we liked it, my sister's quote pretty much sums it up, "I want to drink one of these every day for the rest of my life". It was so yummy. According to a website, it is a specialty of the British Virgin Islands, and is similar to a pina colada. I know I love pina coladas, so that would partly explain it. But something really special about it was that it was topped with nutmeg. So if you don't like nutmeg, you probably would hate the drink, but it added something extra. A warning to those of you who are not used to tiki drinks: do not be fooled by the cute mugs they come in, or the cherry garnishes or the parasols or any of that. They are so innocent-looking, but they are POTENT. They are also really tasty so they go down well. A little too well sometimes. We were told by our knowledgeable and friendly bartender that each drink has around 3 oz. of booze. So you figure, if you have 4 drinks, you just had 12 shots! I wisely limited myself to two, but my sister and husband...well, let's just say they weren't at their very best later in the night or the next morning. If you like tiki places, try this place. Just try it! If you don't like crowds, maybe consider going at a less busy time like I did. Take time to savor the atmosphere and just relax. Aloooooooooha! read more

This place is super cute! I totally understand the hype and appeal of checking out this bar. Clifton's, in general, has a really cool vibe. There are so many different rooms/bars that have a different theme, so you can never get bored (it's like bar hopping indoors!). Pacific Seas is the cool speakeasy that everyone wants to get into. I didn't know too much about the place before coming on a Friday night. I was in the secret room by 9pm, which was perfect because by 9:30pm, they brought out the waitlist! My friends who came later on around 10/10:30pm only had to wait about 20 minutes. I believe they text you when it's your turn to enter, so at least you can walk around the rest of the bar and relax a bit. I like that they have a waitlist--mainly because it keeps the bar from being overwhelming packed. I hate dealing with people shoving or having to tippy-toe over the bar just to get a drink. This place was at perfect capacity for the entire time I was there (until a little past 12). They also had some really interesting drinks (if you like sweets)! - Singapore Sling - Pretty yummy! I could sip a few and not be tired of it :) - Pacific Seas Daiquiri - Loved this! It was delicious and had a cute flower floating in the middle. - Blue Hawaiian - Not bad. Sweet drink. - Painkiller - Kind of tasted like a pina colada. If you like coconut, get this drink! My friend also had a "Zombie"...it's supposed to be super strong. I'd call it this bar's version of a Long Island--meant to get you super drunk at a lower cost! Overall, this is a great place to just relax with a group of friends over some very cute cocktails. For my first review of 2018, I figured I would start with a fan favorite, if you will. This is hands down my favorite bar in LA...and maybe my favorite bar ever, anywhere. I don't understand how this place could possibly have only 3.5 stars because it is a DREAM. Pacific Seas is the tiki tiki tiki tiki tiki room located on the top floor of Clifton's Republic. With tropical decor all around you, including a DJ booth inside of a boat, how could you not love the ambiance? It transports you to another time and place! Plus all the bartenders wear Hawaiian shirts, and you can too. It's festive and fun! Bars like this are few and far between. If the atmosphere isn't enough, try one of the drinks here and you'll be sold. My personal favorites are the Blue Hawaii and the Painkiller. The Blue Hawaii is a fruity rum drink with a little bit of coconut cream and just the right amount of blue curacao to make its titular blue color. The Painkiller is basically the best pina colada you'll ever have on the rocks with fresh grated nutmeg on top. YUM! And if you've got a big group, the $40 Scorpion Bowl was featured in a BuzzFeed Worth It video so you know it's legit. While all of Clifton's is a blast, Pacific Seas is definitely the highlight. You could spend a whole night just here! The bartender, Matt, is a really nice guy too and knows what he's doing behind the bar. Came in for thier newly open bar this time around! It's a tiki bar theme deep within Clifton's, past several staircase and through a mirrored wall! Shhhh it's a secret! You're welcomed to a room with a 20's travel feel, with the walls plastered with the map of the world. As soon as you are greeted by the host up front, you walk into a what I would describe as a Polynesian bar with an old fashioned nautical theme. I believe they have bought all of their items from the once used to be Bohooka on Rosemead as well Trader Vic's when those restaurants went out of business and sold thier decorations. There's a boat in the middle of the bar (though you unfortunately can't sit in it.) And lights that look like globes and pufferfish! A solid tiki bar with good vibes and plenty of seats. It's a little bit of paradise in LA! Look for the mirrored door on the third floor of the Clifton's Republic. As soon as you enter, there will be a hostess who will ask how many people are in your party and then direct you to make your way up another set of stairs again. My friend and I were able to get in fairly easy without making reservations but maybe because it was just the two of us. Probably best to make reservations if you're in a big group. And then we walk into a room that has been transformed into a Hawaiian luau. Really cute spot with island music, hula dancers, tiki decor, and strong tropical drinks. My friend and I both opted for the Trade Winds ($14) off of the menu. Don't be fooled by how innocent this drink looks with its umbrella and pineapple garnish and all....because its dangerously strong! It was a nice change of pace that takes you back to a little bit of Hawaii while in the busy hustle and bustle of LA. read more
