I want to give this place a good review but the food makes that impossible. It all looks really good when it comes out but it's very obvious that it's frozen food. My boyfriend ordered the chimichangas which come with 2. They offered chicken or beef as the filling. He wanted one of each but they said that they couldn't do it because it 'doesn't come that way.' If this were any fresh mexican place, it's literally a matter of scooping up meat into a tortilla- not here. It's too bad because the interior is cute and the location is great but...yuck. read more

Cinco De Mayo is housed in what was formerly the short lived Diana's Restaurant and located directly across the street from South Jersey Marina. There are not too many choices for Mexican down in Cape May, but in the last couple of years, more of them seem to be popping up, which is good, because me and my companion love Mexican food. The biggest downer that Cinco faces at this location is parking, which is minimal and very tight. The decor is tacky mexican, with bright walls and colorful pinatas along with the Aztec statues scattered about. The boat seats which were made into dining chairs, are suprisingly comfortable. Festive music was played through the speakers in the ceiling and really put us in a good mood. It was a chilly fall evening when we arrived, and they had the fireplace going, which really added a nice cozy vibe to the place. Sadly, there was already a couple sitting right by the fireplace, so we ended up getting a seat across from them. To start, our server gave us a basket of house made tortillas with re-fried beans and salsa for dipping. Everything was fresh and delicious. The chips and re-fried beans were nice and warm. The menu was an odd mix of Mexican and Italian dishes. We opted to just stick with the Mexican dishes for this meal. After much deliberation, I ended up ordering the Shrimp and Scallop Burrito. My dish had big pieces of shrimp and scallops with a really tasty sauce. My companion ordered the Wet Burrito which was a chicken burrito smothered in a yummy mole sauce. Ordered an appetizer of Nachos Supreme, and Fajitas for dinner. There might be a slim possibility of saying they were fair, being that everything was served at the same time. Literally had to balance plates on top of each other. The tables are small. We gave them a shot during a vacation recently. I was a little put off by their tacky interior (Hello boat seats, damaged tables and mariachi band wall hangings!). The menu was a bit curious. Mexican AND Italian? Whatever works, I suppose! Though I was disappointed to see that they don't attempt any real fusion of the two cuisines; you won't find any Chorizo lasagna or Puerco Picatta here. The service could have been a bit more friendly and prompt, but wasn't really that bad. Disregarding all that, after trying the food I would definitely recommend eating here. The quality makes up for the rest. The guacamole, the Chorizo tacos, the Chimichanga, and the Fajitas were all delicious. The Flauta was a little dry, but have you ever had one that wasn't? Give them a chance. Decent authentic Mexican food isn't always easy to find, and the Italian menu (which we did not sample) may provide a more familiar option for the picky members of your party. read more

Reservations? If you believe in reservations, don't come here. This place doesn't even understand what that means. We made a reservation a day in advance for a large group. The next day we show up on time and the lady proceeds to tell us we have to wait another 30 mins. It also seems like this is normal and she expects us to understand. We wait 30. Then were told we have to wait another 30. Meanwhile, there is no apology or even concern for our large party. Finally, an hour and a half after, they make us split up our group and sit separately. Can't comment on the food because we're still waiting to order... Stay away would be my advice if you are civilized and have plans. If anything, show up without reservations and you may get seated before someone with reservations. read more

This is the second time I was here and I was still satisfied. Great price point for the area and BYOB to boot. The biggest issues are the lack of parking and slow service, thank goodness I had my BYO booze to kill the time, as well as the free chips served with salsa verde and warm bean dip. Otherwise I really like their enchiladas about $13 bus and have tried the shrimp and scallops burrito $15 which is quite tasty, I feel like it is relatively high quality meat and chicken and it kept me stuffed both times without breaking the bank. This most recent time we had a pretty nasty waitress but I enjoy the cheesy decor whic looks like it was purchased at party fair and the authentic old fashioned Mexican music. Wasn't expecting great food based off of reviews and that's pretty much what we got. The tortilla chips were cold as if they were refrigerated, chicken enchiladas were decent, my husbands chicken taco salad was legit a chicken salad inside of a taco shell (no rice, beans, or cheese), service wasn't consistent even though we were the only ones there. The waitress had a cold and we could hear her sniffling and coughing back in the kitchen and while she brought our food out. Service was relatively quick. Decor, seating and tables left over from the Copper Fish. A few inexpensive Mexican touches have been added. Hope that it can be gradually improved. Daytime view of the boats is nice. Full selection of Mexican and some Italian dinners. Many at $9.95. Had the Wet Burrito , the mole sauce was especially good. Those around us all liked their dinners, especially for the price. Plan to go back and try more. The chips with both Salsa and bean dip were a little on the bland side. Portions were decent. The food cam out of the kitchen piping hot, just the way you would want it. Have some parking, unlike most places in the area. BYOB which keeps the cost down.( For those from out of NJ, BYOB is not their choice but the mandate of NJ's crazy liquor laws. I stopped in here with my family for my grandmother's birthday lunch. The food was absolutely fantastic. We had the shrimp and scalop burrito, the taco sala avocado (best taco salad I ever had), the shrimp burrito and chicken and ground beef tacos. They were all wonderful. Being a california mative, I like to I have high standards for Mexican cuisine, or at least an awareness of what qualifies as high quality traditional Mexican food. The presentation of the food was beautiful and artful and everything had a wonderful home cooking taste. Nothing tastes like it came from a supermarket frozen food section. It was all made with love. Our server, Arsinia was delightful and very helpful. She even sang happy birthday with us over a special birthday dessert. Deep fried cheesecake. It was amazing. It's BYOB, so stop by the liqueur store and get your beer and wine on the way. I always prefer that to paying premium for drinks at a restaurant anyway. We almost walked out. The decor and atmosphere are a bit plain/primitive. However we stayed. I hated the menu and wondered why an Italian seafood dish was on the menu but I ordered it anyway. My better half got the fajita burrito. He is a Mexican snob... He said it was the best burrito he ever had. Tried this nice local spot across from the Lobster House. I was warned not to have spicy food the night before a offshore boat trip. Seasickness don't you know. So I tried the Camarones a lo Diablos. It was in fact very spicy and delicious. Good rice and beans. Nice chips and salsa to start. I did get terribly seasick the next day but it certainly wasn't due to a spicy dish. This place has your typical Tex-Mex food, and it was all excellent. While I have no complaints about the food, I do have a few concerns regarding the service and the sanitation there. When my family and I arrived, no one was at the front desk and the restaurant was almost entirely empty (except for a table of 2). It took a few minutes for someone to assist us, and when we were finally seated I was surprised by the lackluster appearance of the chairs. They have white cushions and many are ripped, and they appear as though they were repurposed from chairs found in an airplane...it just didn't look clean. The rest of the decor was fine, though. Despite the beginning of the evening, the service was quick and eventually the restaurant was absolutely packed! I was surprised how popular it was...we must have just walked in during the off hours. In addition, their bathroom needs some maintenance. The door is covered in dirt marks (probably from constant touching by random people) and, to make matters worse, there was no soap in there either. I don't mean that the soap dispenser was empty--I mean there wasn't one at all. My brother told me the men's room is the same. Luckily I had hand sanitizer at my disposal, but it just led me to think about the employees there. If they're using this same bathroom, how are they washing their hands? Yuck. Visited on a Sunday night. There were a few other families there when we entered and were seated promptly and had our complimentary chips and salsa in no time. The Wife and I are big fans of Mexican food and this place did not disappoint. The menu is extensive and relatively cheap for the amount of food you receive. I had the pollo mole while the wife had a chicken burrito. Both were excellent, and on par with our local spot that we both LOVE ! The employees were friendly and seemed to genuinely care if we were enjoying ourselves. 5 de Mayo is a byob, so the ability to save by bringing your own alcohol is great. We visited the day before Easter Sunday, The food was decent, everything else was terrible. We visited between lunch and dinner so maybe some delay in service was acceptable, as there was only one waiter at that time. What was not acceptable was the waiter continued to serve every single guest that came after us, but repeatedly ignored our basic requests, spoke over us, talked back rudely. We were served water after every other guest was served water plus food, despite their arriving well after we had and our several indications to the waiter that we were ready to order food / waiting for water that we had requested. Very small clean family run restaurant, only 16 tables. stopped in on Cinco de Mayo so I have to give them the benefit of the doubt because it was very busy. We waited about 45 minutes which is not terrible on a Friday night but once we sat we waited another 45 minutes for food. I got the steak fajitas and my fiancé had the Cinco de Mayo fajitas (shrimp, steak, chicken) portions were decent and price was reasonable $38 for the two of us. My steak was cooked very unevenly some pieces were well done and tough, others were medium. His chicken and shrimp were also tough a few pieces were inedible. It was still pretty tasty even though some bites were under seasoned while others burst with flavor. I would give them another shot on a not so busy day. read more

This mixed Mexican / Italian joint opened up around Spring / Summer of 2011, replacing Diana's. Cape May is in need of a decent cheaper Mexican place and De Mayo's does nicely. I had a yummy Mole burrito, (called Wet Burrito on the menu), but the menu was full of many other things I wanted to try, especially the seafood specialties. One of the dishes had scallops...Mmmm..... The ambiance is very nice, sitting on white "captain's" chairs. Some may say the decor is chintzy, and it kinda is, but hey, Mexican food suits a poor man, so I can bend a little on the decor. The music was played too loudly for my tastes, so 4/5 stars only. We came here for dinner tonight and should have left when the chips were stale. Our food was ok but there was a piece of metal in one of our meals. When I showed the waitress, she clearly felt bad, but came back from the kitchen and simply said, "My boss said sorry". I pressed further and asked to have it removed from the bill. She left again and then peeked out from the kitchen with who appeared to be the manager. The manager never came to talk to us and instead the waitress came back to tell us she was allowed to give us a discount and charge $10 for the metal laced fajitas (a $4 discount). This was the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. We waited 30 minutes before finally flagging down a waitress to take our order. We got our drinks 15 minutes later, our appetizer after another half hour and at 50 minutes from when we ordered still had not gotten our food. The waitress claimed there was no manager, just 2 people cooking. They get a star because the guacamole was good. We just never got chips to eat it with. Had a late lunch here yesterday. The chips were bland but the warm bean dip and green salsa were very good. I hade the Chili Rellenos which were very good with a wonderful sauce. My husband had the Chimichanga which was served as two separate pieces individually fried which were stuffed and had moist chicken and another great sauce. Be for-warned! Went to this authentic Mexican restaurant two times. It was hard to park in the off season so I can imagine it's even harder in the summer. The first time was great; food is decent. The place lacks authentic decor, but the food is cheap so you can overlook the atmosphere. However, went back a second time, had a different waitress, she told my party that she does not accept American Express, so I paid with another CC.
