Great theater, love that they show all these old classic movies and independent films as well as the popular releases. However, have to take a star off because they have THE WORST popcorn on Long Island! What makes it even worse is that they advertise it as being the best! The only way to explain it is that it's like the big, huge pieces that you get in those generic tins where it's divided into caramel / cheese / plain. Real solid theater, worth the 30-minute drive, but even my kids won't eat their popcorn, and they'll eat gummi bears from last Christmas that they find under the radiator. read more

One of my favorite places to see movies. If you can't bear the thought of losing a movie theater, you'll love this place.

If you're looking for something other than the same-old same-old movie theater, this is the place to go. The just renovated and everything is so shiny and new. We went last night for a screening of Nosferatu accompanied by an orchestra doing the score. It was so much fun, and really brought the silent film to life. Cult Cafe is also a favorite of ours, showing culty-type movies and on occasion a band playing. Really great place, and glad there is a place like this on our Island! read more

Why has it taken me so long to get here? We went for a nighttime oddities and vendor market. Had a wonderful time. It's set back from the road and my GPS was going to pass it, but I knew what to look for. The market had some choke points but had really fantastic venues. I bought my mom a horror book written by a local author and he signed it. Also there was a vendor... bite and kiss? They had amazing stationary and cards. I couldn't stop myself! There were old medical antiques, some taxidermy stuff, original art. Obscura fun. There was also a local coffee master who blew my mind. Oh and they play movies there too! Check the listings. I think I'll be back. It's certainly a niche I really enjoyed. Do it with friends! read more

This place is a gem. The Cult Cafe screens cult films that you can't see elsewhere in theater. They also host a lot of indie content here, which is great to give them a presence. I've also really enjoyed going to Cult-a-rama, an alternative art, antiques and vinyl fest. The cafe inside has a pretty great selection of food and beers. Lots of vegetarian/vegan options as well. read more

Cinema Arts Centre - Cinema Near Me - Huntington, New York

I can't stress how awesome this place is. I have been coming here for years and years. They always have uber cool events, and great indie/artsy flicks. Some of the movies that I have seen here are The Artist (which was absolutely phenomenal, by the way) and Tetro (don't really remember how that was, I believe it was O.K.), to name a few. But what you really want to come here for are the truly unique festivals and events that they have. The short film festival is not to me missed, it's a lot of fun and I believe they hold it once a year. You get to see short films from all over the world. Pretty cool, and something you won't find at your typical theatre. Another awesome festival I caught some years back was a Japanese horror short film festival. Amazing. Rocky Horror (Complete with people yelling out at the screen every two seconds, if you're a theatre person you'd understand. But even for me it was a bit much because it was literally throughout the entire movie). Saw Wizard of Oz to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. This was something I had ALWAYS wanted to do, and when Cinema Arts offered it, I had to go. It's eerie how well the music matches with the movie. I kinda want to do this again, and throw a Oz party. Anyone want in? More recently, saw the documentary "All in This Tea" which was enjoyable. Me and my boo are tea lovers (which has been mentioned in other reviews) and it was cool to see this. There was also a Skype session following the movie with David Hoffman (who resides in California) who picked tea with Tibetan monks (which you observe in the documentary). Sweet. And there were tea and treats following the question/answer portion to make it extra sweet. If you subscribe to deals like Living Social, Groupon, ect. Amazon Local recently offered two movie tickets and two meals with drinks for $20. A steal! And it's good for a full year, totally looking forward to using it. Wow, what took me so long to finally get to this place? I absolutely LOVE it. First things first, though: This place is CASH ONLY. If you don't have greenbacks in your pocket, you are out of luck. Thankfully, we were able to scrounge up enough money to get two movie tickets and a small popcorn. If I had more time, I would have found an ATM, but lesson learned. Other than that small snag, the whole experience was great. The crowd was mixed - older and younger folks, couples, singles and groups, it was very varied. Everyone was actually mature, no one talked throughout the film, and no one made a ruckus as we were leaving. What a breath of fresh air! The popcorn was amazing - it's organic, fresh, tasty and the butter was REAL. We almost finished the whole bag, which is something I'd never do at a bigger movie theater. If I had more money in my pocket, I probably would have bought a ton of stuff from the cafe after the movie. They have lots of great Long Island publications by the restrooms - I never thought I'd see the Indypendent anywhere other than NYC, but here it was. Overall, great time, cool staff, and an awesome line-up of things to come. I will be back! read more

One of the few Indie art houses on Long Island. I've been going here for years now- and they have grown all the while. A great place to see the films that the mainstream theaters ignore or won't show. They also host a lot of lectures as well as classes on film and theater. A great place with moderate prices. Small cafe on the premises and a big parking area in the rear. They also have various membership plans where you get more and more goodies the higher up you go. read more

I went to see a show while I was in town. I was amazed! Though I grew up in Huntington I never spent a lot of time here and boy did I miss out. The cafe was awesome and I wish we didn't eat dinner before arriving to our main event. We came to see Alan Semerdjian and Jaymay and I thought they had an excellent show. The crowd was a great mix of young people, families, and more mature folk. I will be back and recommend this venue to everyone. It also looks like they have a good assortment of films and other events going on as well. read more

I really didn't want to write this review. After hearing so many great things about this place I decided it was where I wanted to book an upcoming party I was having. I called about 5 times. I left messages. I spoke to the box office. I emailed people. No response. I finally heard back from "Ryan" with an email not a phone call and I did respond to him but it's been about a week and no response. Don't you guys want business? My family lives in Huntington and we cannot believe the unprofessionalism I experienced trying to reach someone to book a party! I would not recommend this place if you want to book a party or if you actually want to reach someone. read more

A super cultural hub for Long Island. Come here for movies that you can't find playing anywhere else and for super lecture series that seem to bring in world class talent on a weekly basis. Seriously, just take 10 min out of your day and check out the events schedule. It's redonkulously bomb shiznitzle-tastic. OK, besides the schedule, the prices for these events/movies are always reasonable with a discount for seniors and members. As for the theaters, the seats themselves are not new or necessarily comfortable, but that's not really what you're there for. I always thought the sound was crap, but then i saw "shut up and play the hits" and it really sounded great. Rattling bass. I love this place! But I will explain why it does not get 5 stars. Some of you will go here and think it deserves 5 out of 5 stars, and I will not be able to fault you for thinking that! I am going to be talking about my experience here, but they have much more to offer than I take advantage of. For example, trivia nights, screenings of older movies, probably other stuff too. Positives: This cinema shows a wide variety of limited release films. I frequented this place frequently for quite a while before I started going to the city frequently to see movies. If you are interested in limited release or foreign films, this is like one of the two places on long island that you can go to see them. Typically the selection of films they show is excellent. The atmosphere is very nice! I'm a sucker for the smaller cinemas so I enjoy the homey feel. It's connected to an old people's rec center and right next to the YMCA. So there's some flavor in the neighborhood too. Lot's of old people go here, which is cool because old people can be funny in that senile kind of way. Negatives: Yes I am sorry owners of this fine establishment if you are reading this review, but there are negatives that I must talk about. 1) The food. SUCKS. Horrible, horrible food!!! The popcorn has always been bad (organic, non-buttered popcorn, yuck!!) But in the past few years they seem to have dedicated their time to procuring all organic, "health" snack food that is just nasty. To be fair, I have not eaten the food there in quite some time (probably been a good year since I decided to get the food there, so take this part of the review with a grain of salt as they may have changed since then), but it was awful. I would say sneak your own food in, but please give this place money it deserves it. Plus, some people are in to that healthy organic crap. But me, especially at the movies? Please make my meal salty, greasy, and full of sugar. 2) The seats. During a time of massive theater improvements, the Cinema Arts Center shines through as very low tech. The seats are small, relatively uncomfortable, and squished together - you know, like how it used to be at the movies. This theater is tiny and probably losing money left and right, so I can't fault them for not upgrading. 3) The price. Student price - $9. Not bad if you remember to keep your student ID on you. Plus they don't really care if you look 30 and still have a college ID. But normal movies are $12. That is kind of steep considering the theater experience you are getting, and if you go to the movies constantly like I do $9 or $12 each time can get pricey. But hey, what else are you going to do? Go to the city and spend $500 on a ticket for the same movie? Yea right. But $12 for the 'theater experience' you are getting here is still a bit hefty. $12 for recliner seats and good food? Sign me up. Overall: Overall, this place rocks. Best place to see limited release movies this side of Manhattan. Don't let my criticisms dissuade you from going to this fine theater especially if you've never been there before. I appreciate SOMEONE(S) dedicating their time to maintaining a proper limited release theater. read more

Such a cool place to have to see movies that are less popular but generally more thought provoking. It's just west past the Huntington village (just south of Main St) and is a nice place to find a good movie. They were playing Black Swan when I went and it was good. I've also see a a few others one was Barney's Version.. These are some of the films that were being promo'd just a few months before @ the Hamptons Film Festival. read more

A great art cinema that shows foreign, artsy and off-mainstream movies that otherwise, you will not be able to see in this part of Long Island unless you go to Manhattan. The movie theaters are slowly being renovated (yipppeeeeee!!!!). I just went to see a movie in the one renovated (out of 3 theaters) and the seats were comfy as well as the sound system was a great improvement! Plenty of special activities held here like "talks" with directors, producers and actors; which is a great way to learn about the movies they make on a personal basis, with great Q&A questions in a personal and informal setting. The crowd here is older and mature which makes it enjoyable as everyone is quiet and enjoying the movie. The concession stands offer more 'natural' juices, coffee, tea, cakes and cookies... yum, yum!!! Membership available for cheaper movie tickets as well as exclusive entrance to events and shows. Nice sing-along shows like "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Xanadu". Also midnight shows of scary movies. Always a good idea to check their website at: http://www.cinemaartscentre.org/ for events. Since there are only 3 theaters, the movies showing do not stay long... quick turnovers, so don't put going to see a movie for too long or otherwise you will miss your chance. read more

I am proud to say that I have been a member of The Cinema Arts for many many years now and it is money well spent. I've always enjoyed independent, foreign and underground film and was getting really tired of driving all the way to the city or to Malverne just so I could sit in a converted single screen to multi-screened theater with my knees in my nose just so I could watch something with substance. Now I can drive onto Huntington and sit comfortably while immersing myself in 'culture'. I am lucky enough to be able to go to the movies during the week so I am really spoiled when it comes to sharing the place with others. I love siting in the dark practically alone and disappearing for however many hours the movie lasts. The cafe was recently overhauled and now even the most dedicated vegan can dine happily before or after going inside. Yeah the fare is a little pricey but I would complain even more if the place had to close because I wouldn't go for the few extra bucks. Considering the really really great films Huntington Arts offers and the unexpectedly good food served in their restaurant, I am saddened to hear that they are living basically hand- to- mouth. Everyone who has ever crossed their threshold and come out visually & emotionally satisfied should pay for the unique gift that is the Huntington Arts Cinema. So there! read more

I've been going here since they opened with one theater and practically fold-up chairs. Since then, it's grown into three theaters and only a few fold-up chairs remaining. Outside of IFC, the best source of independent, documentary, and alternative movies around. Frequent guests are the people that were involved in the production of the movies being shown. And the popcorn that tastes like you made it on your stove - with real butter! (None of that orange oil). Yes it's a little hoity toity, and yes if you're using this website you'll be the youngest in there by about 30 years but it's a really great local business and a great alternative to the usual movie theater fare. read more

"Fritter and waste the hours..2 hours" I attended the VIDEO showing, not film of the Rare Clips Pink Floyd that was assembled by the "archivist" Bill Shelley. When the DVD started up, I was not happy. I saw the main menu of the DVD. That doesn't please any film goer. I came to see a movie..a show.. a work.. After all, I spent the non-member $13 Mr. Bill Shelley provided a small piece of misinformation. He stated that Syd Barrett was a bass player . Anyone who is a fan of this band and its early works knows that the GUITAR work of Mr. Barrett shaped the band's sound and was quite intrinsic to its potential for innovation. You would think that an "archivist" would be able to understand the history of this band and its players. We came to see this "movie" as a fan of the music of Pink Floyd. But, what commenced was a chronology of the band with 3 to 4 seconds of black between each segment of "archival" footage. I can safely state that the movie was not a movie. There is no craft here. I have several different pieces of footage on DVD, including the Video of Live at Pompeii. Although, we all love Pompeii, this footage provided filler (almost 30 minutes or more!), and nothing more.. The added videos that followed were born of MTV and VH1, and were not really anything rare. Maybe Mr. Shelley caters to the mediocre and average retro-needy folks, but this "movie' does not convey an interesting composite of the career of of the most influential modern musical groups of our time. Everything is here. There is no reason this shoudn't be IT. They show independent, commercial, foreign, and classic films. There's a little cafe, which is nice. They also have great events where they delve into all things film and entertainment. When I was in college, Every Friday and Saturday there was 'Late Nite Binghamton'. It was the alternative to going out to bars and getting drunk. It was all about clean living and school sponsored good times in the University union. The floors were tiled and institutionalized and I could never quite put my finger on it, but there was always a certain sterility about it. Same feeling when I go to the CAC. Maybe its the tiles. The sound steps make when they echo. It's the same feeling as a basement in the library. Government sponsored fun. On a Friday and Saturday night, there is a world of difference between here and the Multiplex. I want this place to succeed on its own merits. I want the publics tastes to align with the films shown here. Maybe they need to put a little less money into it. get some soft rugs. get a hot dog grill. break some things. I didn't have the popcorn, but it should make you feel like you will have a heart attack, but I will guess it doesn't. I say cut half the lights. I want comfort, not an expansive convention center. This is a great architectural piece. I bet the blueprints were spectacular. What makes a theater a destination? What is more important in viewing these films: their artistic or entertainment value? How could the space become more warm and welcoming? Perhaps more importantly, what are the implications of a center becoming a centre? read more

It's a little bit of a dingy theatre, and is most definitely always filled with senior citizens, BUT they have amazing limited release movies and great discounts if you're a member or a student (or a senior citizen...which I think starts at 55!) Just being your own food and/coffee or Eat beforehand because it's a tad pricey and not good... Pretty basic, but to be expected as they don't really have a kitchen. read more

Excellent selection of independent/arthouse/foreign films, cult films, music performances, comedy, trivia nights. There is a cafe inside as well as the usual concession stand. More age-ranges should come here, it seems to draw only an older audience. The theaters themselves are a little outdated but still clean and staff is friendly. read more

This is by far my favorite movie theatre. As Many before me have said, it's independent. That's very important to me as I enjoy supporting (relatively) small, independent businesses. The atmosphere is first class. It's nestled in the edge of Huntington village, surrounded by woods. The only problem there is that like everywhere else in the village, parking is a challenge. But it's testament to the fact that this is a very happening place to be. It's the only place outside of New York City that I'm aware of that features independent and international films. In this age of derivative, let's-make-money-now crap that Hollywood keeps churning out, I want to see some independent films. And after the film is over, you can chill in the cafe, which also has a nice ambience about it. If you haven't been here yet, GO! read more

Great Movies, Only draw back it is dirty sometimes.Carpets have that musty smell. The food court always a mess on the floor. Coffee station is always a mess. It's great for mice. Rats in the evening hours start running around outside in the Garden area where chairs and tables are and the walkways when exiting. Thats a real treat.. Like I said great movies! but this is an old building that serves food and a senior center on the other side. So food garbage does build up . Also as patrons we can do our part by not littering. read more

If you love indie & foreign films, this is your place! This theater feels like a throwback to better times for film, before the big multiplexes took over. The venue is small, cozy, and has character. Long Island could use more of these sorts of venues. I've seen a lot of films here through the years and it's always a good experience. Every time I check, they have interesting films showing.
