Since I no longer use paper checks--a common shift for many modern checking accounts--I was advised to have my bank complete and sign Section 2 of the CalPERS Direct Deposit form instead. I brought all necessary identification, including my passport, driver's license, birth certificate, and marriage certificate, to make the process as smooth as possible. Despite this, staff at the branch declined to sign or stamp the form, stating that Bank of America does not provide wet signature for external documents. I was surprised by this, especially given the bank's involvement in other verified transactions like mortgage processing; as my family has held three mortgages with Bank of America. As a result, I've experienced delays in receiving my funds and have had to request a physical check from the State Controller's Office instead. For those planning to retire using CalPERS or a 457(b), I recommend confirming your bank's willingness to support your financial transition--or consider a financial institution that can partner with you on long-term goals. I also did make note of this with the state of California.

I was sent info in the mail about the transition from Union to US, and I read the pamphlets they sent. After I received the letter that had my new bank account routing and checking numbers, I called US Bank to get a new set of checkbooks. The first rep I spoke to was really friendly, and once I explained to her my situation, she told me I was fine to get the checks complimentary. Fast forward a few weeks, and I saw my account was charged $36 for the checks. I called back, and the rep was rude and unhelpful. He told me that I shouldn't have ordered a new set of checkbooks because he claimed that my old checks were still fine to use. How could that be? US Bank won't go through the hassle of looking up my old Union Bank account info whenever I write a check. The only things the pamphlets mentioned were the aforementioned transition and that once I activated my new US Bank debit card, my Union Bank debit card was no longer valid. When I pushed back on his claim, he said that I should've been charged a "complimentary welcome fee" of $18 for the checks. Once I mentioned again that I was offered complimentary and the pamphlets didn't say anything about the old checkbooks, he "magically" found a way to reimburse the $36 charge. This will make me wary of them going forward.

When a different staff member has to get back to me (e.g. a Loan Officer) I have gotten a call back really quickly. I also have accounts at the one of the two "Major" banks that I share with my husband and although the people are nice, the service is ridiculously slow and the staff never returns phone calls so I MUCH prefer CB&T for the quality of the customer service and the speed of getting things done. This location is in a big office tower but they validate parking so it is free to use the downstairs parking lot. And there is good chain sandwich cafe that is very convenient for lunch in the lobby.

I can pick up the phone and talk directly to a branch manager (Kelley Carpenter) or district manager with any banking questions. When I applied for a business loan, I got a call from a big wig in Sacramento thanking me for my business. WOW. I also love the remote deposit feature we use in two of my offices. Online customer service is always helpful. They even host a luncheon for business owners with interesting guest speakers. Who knew a bank would/could do this? This bank treats me like a king.
