Open Fridays now! John is the man! Also, one of the few spots in Houston that makes real Breakfast Burritos.

I remember when I was younger going to cafeteria with my adopted grandmother (we adopted her, our…read moregrandparentslived in the Caribbean).. She loved cafeterias. You could get really simple and tasty southern style food for a good price. Us kids loved going because not only could we pick out a delicious entree and two sides of our choice, out health nut parents allowed us to get a dessert of our liking as well as a drink of our liking because the value was so good. Also, if other people from church came, aside from plenty hugs, we sat by ourselves close by and roared with laughter until our church members got in on the jokes and the whole section was laughing. Good times. Grandma often paid for everyone since it was affordable to her and she loved us to pieces. I said all that to say that Luby's gives that nostalgic feeling of my youth. Now, the food isn't at the level that it needs to be but it is comforting. I can just hear grandma asking everyone if they are okay and enjoying their meal! My favorite items from her are the homemade dressing, mashed potatoes, savory green beans, delicious butter corn kernels, mac and cheese, whole wheat rolls, cabbage, and cornbread. Basically the sides. The mac and cheese is not yellow but it is very cheesey and nice! So delicious and creamy. They have a good dessert list but my sweet tooth hasn't picked back up. Would recommend!

They said I had to pay an additional $3.29 if I wanted a soft drink because the strawberry lemonade is a separate thing. Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! And also the manager can be heard yelling and belittling his staff in the kitchen. Will never return. Managers name was Mike I believe.

Once you had it, you can't go back to the American Roast. Also check your receipt. You can take the survey and you can redeem a free pastry or coffee drink. NOTE; Also...on some mornings if you come for breakfast, try not to sit at the table at the very corner by the windows near the bathroom. Both times I sat there, a woman sat her things telling me she reserved "this table". Which is odd because there's no reserved seating. Second time, my things were clearly there and she decided to place her things anyway.

They have seasonal offerings that I get sometimes. Maybe 1 item because most of the items aren't that desirable. Their only there for a few weeks or a month though. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I stick to the breakfast items but I have tried a few lunch items. My favorite item from here is their bran muffin. Yes, bran muffin. They are a very very good size with raisins in it. I'm glad that they are tasty and not too sweet. I've never had them with butter, (I'm not a bread and butter girlie. I just like plain bread), but I bet they would be so delicious with a little schmear of butter. The next thing I really think is delicious is the savory quiche with the buttery crust. I get the Quiche Lorraine with the ham and cheese in it. It's nice and hot and has a good amount of toppings. Whenever I want quiche, this is where I go! So yummy! I also love their delicious hot cocoa. It is so warm and rich. Just, really nostalgic of my Mum's creamy hot chocolate. Come try it out!

This husband-and-wife duo has been at the…read morehelm of this West Oaks location for close to a decade, where practically everyday (#1) feels like Thanksgiving. They've built a loyal and local following by making comfort food the centerpiece of their many talents (#2). When the food is as tasty as the customer service is friendly, it's hard not to love all they to offer. The shop is so small that seating is non-existent, (#3) thus it's strictly a takeout and delivery establishment. Their display case of hot foods changes throughout the day, depending on availability. Anything after the late afternoon is a huge gamble, so when in doubt, call ahead of time to confirm whether an item is available. I love to pop in just to get a good visual of my choices -- and I've always managed to walk out with something delicious. Of all the items I've tried, there have been standouts across the board. The oxtail, stewed chicken with gravy, smothered rib tips, meat loaf, and their über famous honey glazed wings and meatballs are fabulous. Their sides of dressing, sweet candied yams, mac and cheese, and fried green tomatoes make for a perfectly complete meal. Even the cornbread is outstanding, which is really saying something. I'd be remiss not to mention their incredibly underrated desserts. The peach cobbler is fire, pound cake and banana pudding are excellent, and their triple layered German-chocolate cake floored me. It was decadent, a tinge savory, and extremely addicting. The fact they offer catering for every item mentioned above means my future potlucks are going to be next level. When they're ready to open another location in a different part of town, I can only hope it'll be closer to me. Otherwise, it's off to West Oaks when I'm craving a food-coma-worthy treat. ____________ (#1) Except Monday. They're closed. (#2) They are influencers in their community, authors of their own books, own a foundation and also run a 24/7 radio station. Yes, really. (#3) However, the kitchen is significantly larger than the rest of the space. Another reason why the food is bangin'?

I decided to get the meatloaf plate with double macaroni & cheese and the 32 oz Candy Apple Kool-Aid drink. The macaroni & cheese was extremely delicious! It was the best I probably had in a long while. The Kool-Aid was super refreshing and sweetened to perfection. The meatloaf, however, was a slight letdown. It was overly too sweet for my liking. The price point of the food was decently affordable. I would consider visiting this restaurant in the future to try more things from the menu.
