It was very busy during lunch hours on weekdays and the wait for foods were quite long when we last visted. This time, we dined during their non-peak lunch hours and this early dinner meal was enjoyable . There were about 2 to 3 tables and couple takeout orders in line but no more crazy wait for foods. Service was good with topping up teas and providing iced cold water. Ambiance is simple and retro here plus I appreciate their overall cleanliness. Some tables for two are quite close to each other but their tables can also easily be grouped together for seating large parties of 8 to 15 if needed. Tried this place for the first time yesterday and ordered to go. The chicken is boneless. Portion is pretty small for the price. It's good but not $50 good. A whole chicken is $49.50 and comes with 5 bowls ( so they say) of oil rice. It's in one container so it's hard to tell. We asked for one bowl of white rice and the lady said she had to charge extra for a container. Come on. Talk about nickel and diming. This was a small round container. I don't know exactly what she charged for it , but for a $70 order, i thought it was totally ridiculous. Also ordered the char kway toew noodles which wasn't very good. I've had much better elsewhere. Can't say I would come back because it's quite expensive and felt the service was not lacking. read more

A little place in the King Edward Mall complex serving Singaporean cuisine. Very local and operated by a family. Services was fine and friendly. Tonight, there was a hit and a missed. The curry chicken with roti prata bread was delicious. The curry had just the right mild spiciness. The bread was light and fluffy and absorbed the curry to the last drop. The tear jerking miss was the char kuey teow because the noodles were not the traditional fresh flat wide ones but the type used for pad thai. The flavours were there but the wrong noodles used. This is one of my most favourite noodle dishes but was not a hit for me. Empty when we walked in at around 11:45 but completely full by 1:15, this long standing malaysian restaurant is known for their chicken rice as evidenced by this being ordered by every table. We went with: Whole chicken with 5 bowls of rice - the chicken is nice and tender but not too flavourful while the rice was a good texture (not too soft) and although flavourful, was not overly oily. I found the price to be a little high for the amount of chicken we were served but they also provide 5 bowls of soup which was tasty and classic. Beef Curry with Roti - No complaints on the curry or roti. Again, prices are slightly high in my opinion but the curry had a good amount of beef chunks and potato. Satay - 2 each of pork, chicken and beef. I didnt try this because there was peanut in the marinade but my friends enjoyed the skewers and said the sauce was quite flavourful. Coffee - not enjoyed by those that ordered it as it was too sweet and smelled like instant coffee? Overall, the food here is alright, but not my favourite chicken rice in town. This place has been here for as long as I can remember. They offer dine in as well as take out. The popular item on the menu seems to be the Hainanese chicken with rice for take out. I say this because of the stacked containers for pick up on a side table. There is a choice of whole chicken with rice for $42, half a chicken with rice for $26, and regular one person serving for $14. Seeing this, I ordered a regular Hainanese chicken which was tasty. The fried chicken wings were also good but at $9.50 for a few pieces,it was on the pricey side. The curry chicken with bone regular order was pretty good in flavour and price. We came during lunch hours and we ordered a Hainanese chicken, pork sate, roti canai, and spicy seafood mee goreng (mee goreng means fried noodles in Malay/Indonesian) to share. The decor is very basic with no atmosphere, like a cheap cafe-type eatery anywhere in SE Asia. The food came fairly quickly The chicken was chewy and like it could have been cooked about 5 minutes more because the meat inside looked still pink and the portion appeared to be less than half chicken although we got 6 sticks of sate. The sate did not seem to have been made on the grill but rather deep-fried, although they were all right if not very greasy, though. The roti was OK with only two pieces. The noodles were a fairly big portion and with lots of tofu, but only 2 pieces of squid and 6 shrimp and maybe about 6 very, very small tidbits of meats or maybe liver??? The noodles were supposed to be spicy, but had little flavour. All I can say is that the food is meh, and based on the quality, it was, very expensive. First off, this is not really a Singapore or Malaysian food restaurant. Maybe it was but what I had definitely was not. I was told the Hainanese chicken rice was really good here. So I came to try it. The rice was ok, a bit flavorful. What was not ok was some portion were hardened like those from the bottom of the pot. Maybe they were leftover rice from the day before? I was the first customer of the day. So avoid coming here when it opened. The portion of the chicken was quite small. The chili sauce was not that great though the ginger was good. To me the chicken rice is average. You can get better ones elsewhere. I think the one at Malay Curry a house in Crystal Mall is the best so far. Very similar to those found in Singapore and it included a bowl of soup for to go order. Cheaper too at $10. Now the char Kway teow. The restaurant spelled the kway as kuey so that's Malaysian. I was expecting either Malaysian or Singapore version of it. Unfortunately it was yellow! My picture could not capture the actual bright yellow. My heart sank when I saw it. It sank further when I tasted it. Curry powder! So the char kway teow was like the HK style Singapore fried rice vermicelli except it was with flat rice noodle. Disappointment x 100. If I was expecting that, then it was ok. But when the restaurant has the sign indicating Singapore and Malaysian, then it is wrong. I doubt I will be back to try other dishes. My favorite place for good price and value of Hainanese Chicken! If you order a full chicken it also comes with 5 bowls of Oil Rice and free soup for each person! A total rip-off place. We ordered a full chicken to take out. It came in a 10-inch plastic dish with 2 separate dishes of rice. For $47 dollars, there were less meats than half a chicken. They did not even provide plastic bag for take-out and they only take cash or interac. We definitely will not go back. read more

My parents told me about this place and their Hainanese chicken. I had it before coming to the actual restaurant. My parents usually get take out and bring it home for me. I remember them being very delicious but upon my last visit, I was somewhat disappointing. Flying in from PR, I was starving after I landed (also after a long delayed flight). My parents suggested to come here for lunch (got here on a Friday at 2:30 pm). We got one whole Hainanese chicken to share. A whole chicken was $30.95. It also came with chicken soup and 5 bowls of rice. The chicken was definitely not wow. I would say Banana Leaf's or Mama Lee's chicken are better and are also slightly cheaper. I do like their chicken rice. They use chicken fat and oil to make the Hainanese rice. Rice was sure flavorful. On top, we got some skewers. They only have assorted. No picking and choosing. Again the skewers are slightly more expensive than Banana Leaf, Penang Delight and most other restaurants. For $12.50, you get two pork, two chicken and two beef skewers. Their skewers are also smaller then most other places. If I had a choice, I would get it all beef. They said I could but I would have to pay an extra $0.50 for each skewer substituted. I recommend Mama Lee or Banana Leaf over City 1 Cafe. But again that could just be my taste. Note service is meh here. read more

I heard their Hainanese boneless chicken was one of the best in town.. courtesy of my mom. As an old adage goes, mom knows best. I did try it and needless to say, it was very good. I bought the whole chicken that comes with 2 large plates of chicken rice (5 bowls according to their menu). I also ordered hot and spicy deep fried tofu and chicken wings. 4 pieces for chicken wings are a tad bit expensive for $8.50. Their DF tofu was surprisingly good but had to toast it in the oven before I ate it. The rice is cooked perfectly. It has that deep chicken stock flavor embedded in the kernel. White meat or dark meat, whatever is your preference, it is boneless and cooked just right. It is juicy to the bite and not dry nor tough when you can assume it is overcooked. I thought a few years would maybe make things better, looking back at my partners review, which was about 3 years, this place still just does not hit the spot, nope..... I came here with a friend who wanted to eat close to my area of work, I really couldn't think of a place, except that he doesn't eat beef, and we have a car, and an easy solution is to go to a place that has ample parking, so I thought.. let's do this again. Be warned when you come here, do not park in the closer parking spots, as they have a 30 minute limit, park in the rest of the parking lot. When you come here, and especially 'prime time' lunch, you will wait as this place seems to get everyone who is looking for their Hai Nan chicken. Give or take a good 10-15 minute wait we were sat down and presented their menu. It is odd that they have regular non-free-range and then the free range chicken on their menu, giving you options... or more like lower budget options if you do not care what type of caged bird you eat? This time we stayed away from the chicken and rice option and went for their seafood laksa. I ordered a cup of cold lemon ice tea to get me through the day and we waited for the food. I noticed when they are packed, the service is slow, with many tables asking if the food was still coming... like a family run business indeed. Luckily for us, we weren't that hungry, but this happened more than once, and finding someone to serve you was not the easiest thing, maybe they were short staffed? No matter, we did get our food before the other people.. which I assume ordered before us, and maybe they were slaughtering the bird in the back? Well the bowl of noodles did come out, and the word I would use, which I hate, it 'meh' as in nothing special, if you were at any HK Cafe style restaurant this would be the result. Sure we ordered seafood laksa, but there was plenty of chicken inside. The rice noodles weren't al dente, the curry like soup wasn't curry coco-nutty enough, everything was just ok, it will get you by. I honestly felt that I was eating in a food court but in a restaurant, everything just felt like it was slapped together, and added just a tad of green for color on top. The lemon ice tea, now this was the star of my lunch, as it was not too sweet, had a good amount of lemons where they didn't cheap out, and manually squeezing them in the drink made a perfect mix, now if only they could do the same with their noodles then I would praise it. I wasn't expecting much from the last time, and I am surprised it still was the same from so long ago. It seems like their drinks are spot on.... just not the food... what gives? The curry sauce that was served with it had good flavours but was a bit watery to my liking. All in all, still quite good. The tofu was likely the lightest seasoned tofu I've eaten at an Asian restaurant. No MSG maybe? Wings were hot and crispy. They were good. Curry beef brisket was very tender and the curry had good flavours. Not as good as Mui Garden's but Mui Garden sets the bar for me in terms of curry. There were coconut shreds served on top of this dish. Hainanese chicken. First off, I am not a huge fan of this in general. I normally would not order this at a restaurant. Having said that, I would order this for myself the next time. It is THAT good. This is coming from someone who doesn't eat Hainanese chicken much. I got the regular chicken, not the free range. I was craving for Hainanese chicken rice for lunch, that's why I went there and tried. It located on King Edward Ave and Oak Street (inside King Edward mall), the interior is very simple but clean. They served Malaysian and Singaporean dishes, their signature dish of poached chicken infused with ginger with rice cooked in chicken stock served with and fresh ginger, chilli and kecap manis sauces. It was so good and tasty!! The Malaysian pancake was great and the satay was delicious too. The deep fried tofu was ok not smooth enough. Something good, quick and satisfying on a rather wet Wednesday evening - and remembered one of our old favourites - city 1; funny how I always forget to review old favourites. This rezzie is perfect as their portions are not generous and suits a weekday dinner. And the Hainanese chicken is as good as in the past, but what's outstanding are their chicken oil rice - Yummy - and the accompanying soup, which is such a good chicken broth that I guess they make from the bones of their boneless chicken. As good as home made chicken soup (oops, my better half is NOT gonna like this remark!). Opted for the half chicken with the 3 bowls of rice and 2 soups. My my my, they still serve small portions - must be pigmy chickens!! LOL, but the smoothness and flavour makes up for the lack of quantity. There were no bones and the pieces were large. It wasn't over soaked in soy sauce and was soft and tender. The green onion sauce was also very delicious. The rice was soft and had chicken flavour. I didn't even mix it with anything and ate it straight up. The Pad See Ew seemed a bit under cooked. The noodles were hard to chew. It was supposed to be spicy, but it was sweet and tasted like tomatoes. The Roti was soft, but extra oily and not cooked long enough to be crispy on the outside. The dipping curry sauce was pretty good though. Finally, the beef brisket curry was very good. The beef was so tender it fell apart in my mouth. The potatoes were large but still soft and full of flavour. Don't come here to expect good service. I asked for tea 3 times before they finally brought over tea. This is the place for us to get our hainanese chicken rice! The rice are very flavorful, the chicken are deboned (yay!) and poached perfectly. The ginger sauce and the chilli sauce are perfect match. We always have it to go and we usually call ahead. This is definitely a comfort food for us and our three boys. After hearing nothing but rave reviews from friends and coworkers alike, I decided to give this place a go and got the Regular Hainanese Chicken with Oil Rice (8.95). The soup is your run of the mill chicken broth. Between the two sauces provided (chili and ginger), I really enjoyed the ginger sauce! It really adds to the chicken. The chicken itself is silky smooth on the outside and surprisingly, is boneless! The taste is alright, but the real winner here is the Oil Rice. Oh my god, it's like the chicken was steamed on top of the rice and all of the delicious juices escaped from the meat and seeped into the rice below. The service here also gets a big plus! The young waitress I had was incredibly friendly, very efficient at refilling my tea and bringing out the dishes within maybe...5 minutes of placing the order, and great at recommending the most popular dish in the restaurant. read more

Yes to boneless Hainanese chicken! Who would have thought, an inconspicuous restaurant would serve such flavorful, delicious, juicy chicken? A cozy small space, this place was quite full on a Wednesday night. We shared an order of the individual sized Hainanese chicken and an order of the curry beef brisket, with a substitution of roti over rice for $1.00 extra. The chicken was perfect; I can't complain about boneless chicken! I would say it's on par with Prata Man. The grated ginger dip and the sweet chili sauce were great complements. The curry beef brisket had a decent amount of soft brisket; there wasn't too much fat like briskets from other places. The curry wasn't too spicy, which was perfect for me. Another great find thanks to the infamous Marc D. The interior is super plain and the piano music is almost annoying, but the food is decent. Get the Hainanese chicken and oiled rice. Likely the best I've had. Not sure what the oil in the oiled rice is (maybe chicken broth), but it sure beats Uncle Ben's. The roti was nice and flaky, but the curry dipping sauce was not quite what I'm used to. The satays were alright. I'll be back for more. Be careful parking here though.
