During my first visit I ordered the monthly special, which was a Burmese burger with mala spiced fries . The Burmese burger featured tea leaf aioli that I could honestly bathe as it was swimmingly delicious. I wish the fries had a little bit more spice, but we a good accompaniment.. After reading some reviews on yelp I came back a second time and ordered what seemed to be a local favorite which were the salted egg yolk chicken wings, which were honestly to die for especially with the chili crisp sauce . New favorite dish alert !!!!! Super crispy , salty , flaky and unique chicken wings . First time I ever tried salted egg anything despite seeing it as an option a few times in the past at Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, as well as in Singapore. I'm grateful that this place put "salted egg "on my radar. I've since had several dreams about those chicken wings and was a little sad two weeks later that the place was remodeling. It was literally my first stop after getting my rental car. I'm glad though that this place is only a temporary closed due to remodeling as I highly recommend this place. read more

I came here a couple of times and visited again recently. The food was still great. The menu was not big but it included all the popular dishes that people love. Usually we could eat those dishes in Singapore and Malaysia as street food but we were lucky that we could eat them here in Canada. I recommended reserving a table if you haven't tried more than four guests. When we placed an order, we had to go to the counter, ordered the food and paid. The service was good. Servers were friendly. We could find street parking but I would recommend parking in the residential area and walking to the restaurant. read more

A solid 3/5 for a hearty lunch. The pork belly and gailan rice bowl was comforting, but I felt that protein was on the smaller side. We ordered the nasi garang rice bowl but they made the wrong item for us so we just took it. We ended up with stir fry noodles in curry with shrimp and beef. It was decent and no complaints. The must get is the crispy pata which is the deep fried pork pieces. It was juicy and tender with an extremely crispy skin. I would be happy to eat only this and rice. Cute little restaurant in Cambie. The place is small, good for 2-4 people max, but has a steady stream of customers doing take-out and dine in. If you really want to eat here, make a reservation. Parking is metered but there are some free on the side streets. Service is polite, fast, and friendly. The menu is inspired by nostalgic asian dishes around the world. I call it comfort food. As others have mentioned, it is on the higher price, and the food isn't a lot, but it does taste great. The appetizer chicken wings was $16 for 4 pieces, but the batter was light and crispy. The crispy pata was $32, it wasn't big but enough for 2 people. Saying this, it was delicious. I don't think I can go to this place everyday, but once in a while. Visiting friends in Canada they really recommended this place, so had to try. Entering the restaurant it looks a bit like a fast food place but it is anything but fast food! Ordered way too much for just 3 people but that's the Asian way! Tried the Calamari, roti, salty egg chicken wings, eggplant, tom yum fried rice, and the crispy pata. Everything was delicious. I especially loved the crispy pata. The meat was moist and the skin nice and crispy. If i had to pick my least fave it would probably be the calamari. Maybe because it wasn't what i was expecting. Came here as a group of 4, and we managed to get one of the outdoor table. I'm not that hungry so decided to get snack instead, I ordered Kaya Toast. Order arrived after we waited for 20-25 min. Not gonna lie, I was very disappointed with the kaya toast. This is not a toast at all, it's a fried bun (mantau) with kaya on the side. The Kaya spread is also a bit too thin. I mean kinda my fault for not reading the description too, so I'll give the one star back. Traditionally kaya toast is kaya spread and butter sandwiched between two toast. There is neither "sandwich" nor butter in their version of kaya toast. Mantau bread is far too dense compared to regular bread as it's steamed. Weird take on kaya toast. Food was tasty but way overpriced. The food is probably 20-30% smaller than similar places, for a few dollars more. My buddy and I left hungry. Honestly the items are kid sized. Knock 1 star off. Bright inviting space to gather with company while enjoying eats. Service is non intrusive, no real concerns but no actual praises either. Pink Scallops - this was one of their special menu items. Broth was fragrant & light. I'm not sure it's worth the price thought. A lot of empty shells that looked strategically placed just for aesthetics. No, I did not find my missing scallops at the bottom of the bowl. Scallops that were there grew on me as I got deeper into the dish. On first tastes, I thought they were clams which threw me a bit. Quite the miss for me as for that price point, I expected the actual scallops to shine, not the shells. Roti Canai - these were ok. Not exceptional but not horrible either. Did this place get hit by shrinkflation or something? We ordered three dishes here, thinking that would be a healthy portion for two, maybe with leftovers, but it wasn't even enough for one person. Some of the older photos look like they're of meals with decent portions but, today, you're looking at almost $60 with tax and tip for part of a meal for one person. Some of the dishes were sized like a small appetizer, and some were sized like one part of a sampling menu, but that was the entire dish! This restaurant has been on my list for a while but constantly bumped back to the middle by vetoes. Well we finally made it. And I get the bumps. We were asked a few times if we'd be sharing the dishes which added to the audible let down and confusion when the plates arrived. I get the hawker concept, the street vendor style plates and all but the portions were not that: think full-stomach-but-want-an-afternoon-snack-size. We tried an order of chicken wings, chicken sando and laksa. The 4pc full drumette-wings looked so sad on the plate albeit delicious. They were flavourful, juicy and very good but for +$20 after tax+tip.....eh. The sando was also decent but really a fancy mcjunior I don't know how we could've cut that into four so we just took bites. Laksa was unremarkable - a small shallow dish with some noodles. Friends invited us out for a quick and easy take out dinner and suggested this little place. The food was really good! We got the fresh spot prawns with salted egg yoke and corn flakes, the Char Kway Teow and fish sauce caramel chicken wings. I loved the noodles, hot fresh, and full of garlic and beef flavour. Yummy! The spot prawns; what a treat!!! They were huge and luscious....but too hard to eat whole. So we had to leave the yummy outside coating mostly. I think I would've tried the garlic coating or sambas coating next time. And the chicken wings were so good, sweet salty and a little spicy. Came on a Sunday afternoon, not a lot of people inside. We were seated right away. The service is super friendly and attentive. They answered all our questions and was super fast with everything. We had the laksa, Kaya toast, char kway teow and the chicken Sando. Laksa - I love it when restaurants use a mix of egg noodles and vermicelli. The soup had a very strong shrimp paste flavour which I liked. I could also taste the coconut flavour but I feel like it could have used a little more depth (for me personally needed more seafood flavour). Definitely on the sweeter side. Kaya "Toast" - definitely a different take on Kaya Toast. The milk toast was very crispy and buttery which I loved. The Pandan cream on the side helped balanced out the saltiness of the butter. I would eat this again but would just call it Milk bread with Pandan Chicken Sando - the milk bread went really well with the fried chicken. I found the batter of the fried chicken kind of thick but other than that I felt like the piece of chicken given was really generous and thick. The sliced cabbage helped give it that freshness. It was missing some kind of sauce to give it another kick. Char Kway Teow - this was again another generous dish. Lots of filling given - shrimp, fish cake, Chinese sausage. But I felt like it was missing wok hei (fire flavour) and it was also on the sweeter side (for me). I love this place! Everything we ordered was so good! It was our first time here. We ordered the chicken wings, eggplant, chicken curry, and me goreng noodles. So delicious!!!! The service was great too. Even though it was quite busy, the server took her time to answer our questions thoroughly and give us her recommendations. When we told them we were visiting Vancouver and it was our first time there, one of the servers even gave us a slushee on the house! So nice! The place is small and quaint. Top-notch, creative Malaysian food with a modern flare and plenty of vegan options. When they first opened a year or so ago, they didn't have many vegan options. That has certainly changed, with probably 8-10 dishes that can be modified to be vegan. We ordered: -Green Papaya Salad ($14) -- nice start to the meal, but at least the vegan version of this is a bit too citric and lacking complexity in flavours. Not bad but far from a top-notch papaya salad. 3/5 -Roasted Vegetable Curry ($16) -- such a creative dish, with roasted peppers, cauliflower, potato, and zucchini, along with chickpeas in a wonderfully complex yellowish curry. Sublime. 5/5 -Oyster Mushrooms Luc Lac ($16) -- perfectly cooked oyster mushrooms with green peppercorns and a gently spicy, savoury, soy-based sauce. Wonderful. 5/5 -Wok Fried Laksa ($17) -- this is a stir fry version of a laksa, deconstructed with all the same flavours but more like a curry rather than a soup. The vegan version comes with tofu, bell peppers, lots of basil, bean sprouts, and rich, very spicy curry. Just wonderful. 5/5 Note: I ordered through their online system and was quoted 10 minutes for pick-up. But that seemed too good to be true, so I phoned to check. They didn't even receive my order, despite me being charged. So they took my order # and name to confirm -- eventually, they did get the order, but failed to phone me back to confirm a pick-up time. When I went last year for their a la carte, every dish was outstanding. Tonight we went, and they were serving dine out menu, honestly it was rather disappointing. The lobster porridge is not hot enough, and it has a weird sour taste that I didn't expect from lobster porridge. The sablefish entree was very tiny, sauce was good, wish the portion is a bit bigger with some Asian veggies to go with it. The Thai milk tea crème brûlée tasted pretty good, but the custard was a bit too runny. I also ordered their featured lunar new year cocktail, it's okay, but I wouldn't say is excellent. Got very excited last month hearing a new place opened for Street Foods of SE Asian with a focus on Malaysia and Singapore. So excited and today was a little disappointed in their flavours. A friend and I arrived at 4pm for the Hawker Hour Menu (from 3-4:45pm). I heard so many good reviews about the Salted Egg Yolk Fried Chicken Sando and it was only served during what I perceived as happy hour. We ordered the Chicken Sando with Malaysian fries ($13 + $3) and Fish Sauce Chicken Wings ($13). When we arrived there was not a line up and welcomed in and order immediately. The cashier took my phone number and asked to us to wait outside and would be called when the food is ready for pick up. We waited less than 10 minutes and then found a Cambie Village merchant picnic table across the street. What was disappointing: the Chicken Sando and Fries. I give credit that the chicken was moist, seasoned well, and the salted egg smelled great. I didn't like the sweet milk bread. The sweetness was over powering the savoury notes and took away the salted egg flavour. I pushed the bread to the side so I could focus on the chicken. Glad I shared the sando because I couldn't have finished it by myself as it was huge. The fries were not special at all and wouldn't order it again: salt and some spice was it. What I really liked was the PotLuck Fried Chicken Wings. The caramelize fish sauce made it sweet, salty and sticky. The batter was perfectly seasoned and held the crunch-just heaven. However, as much as I loved the wings, at $13 with 4 pieces it is pricey for street food. Understand they just opened a month ago and maybe going through growing pains. Located in the bustling Cambie corridor, it serves up hawker style southeast Asian street foods. I came for their salted egg chicken sando and it did not disappoint. Juicy chicken thigh meat provided plenty of flavour. Crunchy coating and the lightly pickled cabbage gave texture. Salty egg yolk was not amiss and matched very well with the chicken. The bread might be a little bit too thick for some but it was tasty, grilled nicely, adding a hint of smoky element to the dish. Highly recommended! We also tried nasi lemak, a national dish of Malaysia. We chose sambal squid as the main protein and it was tender and saucy. Rice was rich and coconut aroma came through very well. All other savory components of this dish paired very well with the rice. The sauce that came with the half egg tasted like fermented shrimp paste, so some people might not be used to the flavour. All in all a good dish, on the more savory side, but I think I would have preferred if all toppings were placed on one plate encircling the rice so it will be easier to mix everything together in each bite. To finish off our meal, we had their milo dinosaur, not too sweet, cool and refreshing. Also highly recommended. Wanted to try this place since I've seen it all over TikTok and instagram. The chicken sando was really good and I would definitely recommend. Overall, it was a pretty good foodie experience, albeit a tad bit pricey. But once again, try the chicken sando :9 you can always just walk in, leave your name, and walk around the neighbourhood a bit and they'll call you back once they're ready for you! They told us it would be a 30 minutes wait, I think they called us back in 15. In addition, with the nice weather right now, you can always eat outdoors across the street in the public space next to JJbeans. In addition, I like that they have sanitizer on all the tables! I would recommend bringing your own reusable utensils though in order to generate less plastic landfill. :) I just used my hands to eat instead. read more

When you don't get much of the the opportunity to head down to the Mount Plesant area you try to make the most of it by ordering a bit of everything you set your eyes on! And that was just about what we did here at Potluck. We ordered the Fried Chicken Sando + Fish Sauce Chicken Wing + Nasi Lemak + Mama Cheung's Laksa. Very neat incorporation of something new to traditional street eats and the place has fun decor. But I was hoping for more flavour and heat (use of wok and flame) in its dishes to claim its hawker street food categorization. And it would be nice if they were a tad bit more generous in their ingredients in particular the Laksa - for $15 it only had 2 prawns, 3 thin small slice of fish cake and 2 tofu puffs, but the broth was tasty. Came to get takeout tonight and ordered almost the whole menu and although the prices were not cheap, the food was actually well enjoyed by my entire family and there are plenty of leftovers for tomorrow's dinner! We were intrigued by most of the menu and started off with the brussel sprouts and polenta which was actually very tasty but the amount of oil was a little much. Similarly, the fried shrimp and vegetable cake was also very crispy even at home but too oily (yet it was delicious and my fried food loving brother and father loved both these items). The roti was also nice and flaky and for two large pieces at $9, it wasn't too much higher than other Malaysian restaurants. The salted egg yolk deep fried chicken wings were again quite heavy but the flavour of salted egg yolk wasn't too overpowering and the first few bites remained crispy but after awhile, got a bit soft from the moisture. My favourite of the night was the khao man gai which although pricey for the amount of chicken, had tender white and dark meat atop a delicious oily rice that didn't look like much but actually had great flavour! We also really liked the taste of the laksa (could use more protein) and the charkway teow which was very tasty and had a few large shrimps. I didn't try the nasi goreng but according to my family, there was nothing that stood out in this dish. Last but not least, we got the crispy pata which came with rice and a slaw. The pork hock itself was quite large although many of the pieces consisted of skin and fat but my dad loved the bone which was full of flavour. Overall, the meal was an expensive one but we all agreed that it was almost on par with other Malaysian places. The negative reviews might be from the hype that has been created but coming in with not the highest expectations, I was actually surprised at their food portions and flavours. I would recommend it if you're willing to spend a little bit more to try it out! read more

First time visiting Potluck Hawker - it is an East Asian fusion restaurant with interesting decor inside. We started off with Brussels Sprouts and Chicken Wings (+ salted eggs). Both were interesting and tasted great - the Brussels sprouts was topped with pork floss and caramelized fish sauce. The chicken wings were topped with generous amount of salted egg powder. For the main dishes - char kuey teow lacked flavour for us and for the price charged (18.5) you could get tastier versions from other Chinese or Malaysian places. My favourite dish for the night was the Mr. Bean Sando - pork&shrimp sausage wrapped in bean curd, along with pickled cucumber in a milk bun. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of the burger! We finished with the Kaya Toast - the bun was very crispy and matched well with the pandan coconut jam, though I feel like the bun could be less salty. Anything is good with Chinese sausage. - mee goreng: 4/5 for me. It's good but wasn't my fave dish. It was heavily seasoned for my liking. - fried chicken: 5/5 this was super yummy. Must order. I only had 1/2 a wing but it was perfectly fried and battered with sweet and spicy. Awesome! Roti: 3/5 only portion size for $6, get 1 piece. As well, I prefer a different (curry) sauce not the sauce they served it with. I would come back and try other dishes. We decided to have this restaurant provide our Thanksgiving dinner (for 4 persons) which was promoted as Thanksgiving 2023. It consisted of: Fried Crab - although the coating on the shell was tasty, the crab meat was dry overcooked and hard to remove. Eggplant - tasty for the most part although the green stem on the eggplant was not removed and was not edible. Rice - contained chestnuts and raisins, mostly bland with no taste. Noodle - Mee goreng inspired but far too salty. Brussels sprouts - not bad but might have been the highlight of the meal sadly. We ordered by phone and picked up the order. To our surprise there was a 15% gratuity added and a $5.00 order fee. The total bill came to approx $191.00. We did not feel this was good value for money and would not go back. Potluck Hawker Eatery is a South East Asian food restaurant that specializes in hawker-style food. They hold their vision of recreating and innovating dishes that are pulled from nostalgia, travel and exploration to a very high standard. The food, service and interior was absolutely incredible. I ordered the items below Roti Canai ($8) Two flaky pastry served with curry dip It had a crispy exterior with a soft and chewy interior with that doughy sweetness we all love in bread. The curry dip was light, herbaceous, aromatic and absorbs with the roti very well. Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Sando ($15) coconut milk fried chicken, brushed with egg yolk butter, green apple slaw, cream bun This was honestly the best fried chicken sandwich I've ever had in my life. The chicken was so juicy, tender and flavorful and goes so well with the sweetness of the cream bun, crunch and contrast of the apple slaw, and the richness of the egg yolk butter. A very well thought out sandwich. Mama Cheung's Laksa ($18) two types of noodle with sustainable prawn, fish cake, boiled egg, in housemade lemongrass shellfish curry coconut broth The laksa had herbaceous and aromatic tones that made the it clean, flavorful and refreshing. The different types of noodles and the fresh seafood really added to the experience. Kaya toast ($8) torn milkbread with house-made coconut pandan jam served on the side This toast was insane! It's like a milk bread within a milk bread within another milk bread. The texture was crazy! The kaya jam was expertly made with rich flavors of pandan. This combination is a match made in heaven. Best toast I've ever had in my life. The interior decor of the restaurant was very nice, fun, inviting and nostalgic. Service was awesome! Recommendations, check ins, speed, manners it was all there. Had such great conversations about south East Asia food with my waiter. Overall, this was a life changing experience to me. I could really taste and feel the passion of this restaurant the owners and workers have worked so hard to achieve. My experience here was absolutely phenomenal. I enjoyed lunch on a rainy day with a friend. We both ordered the laksa and shared the roti and chicken wings. I also ordered a super lime drink. Food arrived in reasonable time. The roti was crispy and buttery. It was one of the better roti I have tried in recent memory. The curry sauce was on the watery side, but tasted alright. The fish sauce chicken wings were made well. It was sweet and savoury. Meat was not dry. Chicken wings were perfectly fried. The laksa was the highlight. The spicy broth was flavourful with hints of coconut milk. There were two types of noodles topped with shrimp, fish cake, tofu puff, egg and bean sprouts. The super lime tasted like a sweet lime drink. It was unique because I do not see lime as a option at many restaurants. Our server stopped by regularly, but he was not that helpful when asking for recommendations. He said "everything is good" and "everything is popular" which is not helpful if you are not familiar with South East Asian food. I recommend making reservations so you do not have to wait during peak lunch hours even on a weekday. The restaurant is small and seating is limited. I also would not bring young kids (ie with strollers) here because the set up is tight between tables. Prices are a bit on the expensive side for average sized portions. It was $14 for four chicken wings, $8 for the roti and $18 for the laksa. read more
