My usual mechanic doesn't do engine work. City Auto said bring it in. They quoted me $1000 for a compression test. I later found out the going rate is $200. They told me there was zero compression and acted like they were doing me a favor by charging me $674 to tell me I needed a new car which Johnny's told me for free. They ripped me off and overcharged me. It was deliberate and malicious. I'm a senior. Then they said they don't even do that kind of work after they told me they did to get me to come. They'll be honest and inexpensive for some customers but if they're in a weird mood or think you're a sucker they'll take your last dime. I had a cylinder misfire that caused my truck to shake uncontrollably. When I brought it to them they told me it would be over $700 for them to replace one spark plug and coil and on top of that they said I had a blown head gasket and needed a new engine all because my coolant was leaking a little. Took it to another place and paid $225 for the spark plug and coil replacement. The new mechanic also found my head gasket was fine and I had a little leak from my coolant box which was only $400 to fix, and even told me it wasn't worth fixing if I just put coolant in regularly. All in all they tried to charge me $700 for a spark plug that cost $225 elsewhere, and $7-10,000 for a new engine that I didn't need at all. read more

My daughter called for two tires and they said the cheapest tires they can get their hands on would be $497 for two. Somehow when I called to ask about it they went down to $442 and I got better tires for $388 installed. Another Gainesville auto related ripoff center. Another company that lies with incredible ease. I started taking my two vehicles to City Auto over a year ago. I wish that I would have done it much sooner. The work completed by City Auto is top notch. Excellent work done. Made some great recommendations and even steered me to the dealership when warranty work needed to be completed instead of charging me for it Rachel the owner texts after the work to see how things went. Update 09 August 2018: I convinced my best friend to bring his truck in for a transmission problem and a transfer case service. They are extremely professional in everything they do. We dropped the truck off and went to lunch. They called shortly after explaining the transfer case low range wasn't operative before doing any work. I was in the auto service business for almost 40 years. One of my biggest pet peeve was a mechanic not test driving the vehicle before and after the repairs or service- even if it's just an oil change. It's an obligation I take seriously for not only superior customer service but also to know if a problem exists before working on it. Dan advised him that it's likely a servo and that the transfer case was overfilled due to the transmission rear seal failing causing the transmission fluid to flow into the transfer case, and gave an estimate for the repair. Everything went extremely well, done before it was promised and slightly under estimate. What really blew my friends mind was how the owner contacted him while he car was in the shop and again after the repairs were done and he'd had a chance to put some miles on it. This is a standard, even basic procedure, yet very few shops do it. I've always preached to meet your customers expectations is a recipe for failure, you must exceed their expectations on every single visit if you want to retain your lifeblood, your customers. City Auto Repair is among the best shops I've ever worked in or consulted for! They've also added some equipment for mounting and balancing tires along with a very high tech alignment machine. Now I don't have to worry about some goon at a tire store warping my rotors or screwing something else up because I can get it done at City Auto Repair! -end of updated review- City auto repair is one of those long time family businesses that have stayed around because of their commitment to superior customer service, acute awareness in delivering value and doing the right thing when things don't go as planned. Being a long time veteran of the industry I believe I can offer some insight as to why City Auto should be a first choice for automotive repair and maintenance. If you're happy with the shop you do business with, by all means, stick with them! I've always advised people that you judge how good or bad a shop is is by how things go when a mistake is made. It's not if, it's when. We're a all human and thus we all screw up occasionally. City auto offers value in many ways, they have maintenance programs with free warranties if you service your vehicle according to schedules and their warranties on repair services are twice as long as the independent shops typically offer. I chose City Auto Repair because I saw their great reviews on google. The first person I dealt with, Rachel, was very polite. I took my car in because my windows were going down abnormally slow and I wanted to address any issues before my warranty expired. I had to bring my car in three separate times because they didn't have the part and then because they ordered the wrong part. Each time I had to pay for an Uber to go to and from work. One day after they replaced the door switch, my driver and passenger windows stopped working completely. Today I brought my car in so they could fix the issue. After my car was looked at, I was told by the receptionist that Joe, the mechanic, said that the switch they replaced is working fine, therefore the issue is being caused by something else and they would have to charge me to look any further into the problem. I was given an estimate for over $500 to replace the motor in the driver door panel. I explained that my windows were actually going up and down (just slowly) before I brought my car to them. They didn't feel in any way responsible and have cleared themselves of any liability by stating that the part they replaced is not faulty therefore it could not have been something they did wrong. I asked multiple times if there was anything they could do, considering the fact that my windows were working before I brought my car to this shop. Each time I was told no and then given estimates/costs for future visits. I asked to speak with the manager Rachel but she wasn't there. I was not treated as a valued customer, possibly because of my skin color or maybe because I wasn't someone they were getting enough money from. I came to this shop to get my windows fixed, I paid for their services and left with my driver side window not working at all. They failed to properly diagnose the root of the problem the first time around and now I am left dealing with a window that doesn't work and no warranty. I highly recommend going somewhere else where the person who works on your car is actually willing to speak to customers and take responsibility for a crappy job. They are very obviously only motivated by money. read more

My daughter is in Gainesville (5hours away) going to school. She got lucky when she found this shop. I'm a pretty decent mechanic, and prefer to work on our vehicles when I can, but being that she is so far away, I had to find a trustworthy shop she could take it to. These people seem like it! Seems like a woman running the place, or at least the front of the house, which I prefer. She seemed very nice and helpful when we've spoken over the phone. The prices were very fair and honest, and the car was fixed to satisfaction. We will continue to use this shop in the future. This was only a first impression, but it was certainly a good one. The difference in service was night and day. City Auto Repair were patient, explained everything and encouraged me to seek other estimates; they were totally confident in their service and price. The Honda dealer rushed explanations, were busy to the point of neglecting their customers, and made me feel uneasy throughout my interactions with them. Since you want to try to defend yourself I'll post the full story. I brought my car to you. It did not want to idle but no other issues. You told me it "probably needs a camshaft but we don't do that work here. So it needs an engine and I didn't price that for you." Very unprofessional. My car is now fixed, it needed a reluctor ring. Thanks for charging me $140 to tell me I needed a new motor and for your shop supplies. Will never recommend you and will go out of my way to make sure people don't go to you. I recently moved to Gainesville. I started having car trouble and my in-laws, who have used city auto for years, recommended this repair service. I was totally satisfied. Dan, who is the manager, was very attentive and I found him to be very honest in the assessment of the issues with my vehicle. After all the repairs were done I received a text message from Rachael who I believe is the owner. She offered to give me my next oil change free of charge. This is a great place and I recommend using them if you live in the Gainesville area. It seems to be a true Family business concerned with fair cost in order to retain their customer's business. This used to be my favorite repair place in town! Always honest and reasonable. That has DEFINITELY changed now that they are under new ownership!! I took a car there to be checked before I purchased it, they told me the car needed $8k+ worth of work and was something that they wouldn't put a member of their family in due to safety concerns. I took it back to the person selling telling them what was told to me. Owner was confused and went to speak with them himself (as he believed car was just fine). When he arrived he was told the car was never brought in to them to evaluate. The owner then produced the paperwork (I had given him a copy of their "findings") and asked again... They hemmed and hawed and never was able to give a straight answer. I have since taken the car to two other repair shops in the area which confirmed that there is nothing wrong with the car at all. I was willing to let hat slid as people make mistakes however at dinner the other night I heard one of my friends tell almost the exact same story regarding the service provided there. Though that was odd until a couple days after that a third person, whom I had referred to them, was complaining about them. He stated he was given an estimate for repairs that were "critical" according to them & needed to be completed on his vehicle ASAP, however, when he took the car for a second opinion and found out that all of the so called "critical" repairs were not necessary. He too, went for a third opinion which confirmed his second opinion. City Auto is not on the up and up. Be wary and get second opinions!!! I felt i should Write this review as I've told so many people how awesome they are - I hate to think I've helped support them in any way now :( This is too bad as I really did enjoy doing business with them in the past. read more
