I would not recommend Ahren's-- especially to university students-- based off of my experience with their team and their extreme upcharging of parts. Their pricing is not honest at all. I took my car in with serpentine belt issues. For my make and model, this part generally costs $30-$50. Ahren's priced this part at $80. Their diagnostic examine also found belt tensioner issues. For the serpentine and belt tensioner replacement combined, they quoted me $512 of repairs. This is extremely high and gives me the inclination that this is another mechanic in town that is trying to take advantage of college students who are not as informed on car repairs. I do not think the presented quote is fair by any means so thanked them and let them know I would not be having service done their. I was presented with an $85 fee for a half-hour diagnostic look. This fee was not disclosed beforehand at all, was not mentioned verbally, and I did not sign anything agreeing to this fee. Take your car elsewhere. I took my vehicle here just out of convenience of location, but have previously had much better service at the Firestone off of Archer and with Billy's Auto Repair & Towing. UPDATE: I went in to pick up my car and wish I could leave a negative review. If you take your car here and leave without even having any work done, you will be charged an $85 minimum. I asked why I wasn't informed of this in anyway (no signatures, no verbal inform) beforehand and the woman working the front desk had the owner come out. He raised his voice and started asking why I hadn't taken my car to Billy's or somewhere else. In his rant he referenced other reviews that I have left on Gainesville for miscellaneous places which was unsettling. He lied and said he listened to my phone conversation, saying that I was informed of all fees beforehand-- I certainly was not and he wouldn't play the recording. I have lived in Gainesville for many years and can say assuredly that this is one of the shadier places in town. Finding an honest and talented mechanic can be intimidating to people who are not mechanically inclined or feel like they may be taken advantage of. The shop I used and trusted closed, and since I tinker with cars I routinely have complicated issues arise. The only things I seek help for are difficult repairs or things I don't like doing. I was referred to Ahrens by another specialty shop (this is typically a good sign as good people only refer you to good people as they guard their reputation). I have now had two complicated issues that were successfully and promptly addressed by Ahrens. One following several trips to the dealership in Ocala where the dealership was not able to identify the issue with the vehicle and quoted over $7,000 to start replacing random parts. I brought the car to Ahren's and they sovled the issue for $350 by finding what was really wrong and fixing only that. They were able to do this because of their experience, knowledge and expertise. They were excellent to deal with. I have read their negative reviews and understand how vulnerable people can feel, but I am a car person and mechanically inclined and these are car people and have proven to me they can figure it out, whatever it is. They are nowhere close to where I live and I will make the trip to their shop anytime I need an expert! read more

As a woman many times, I have felt like I was taken advantage of by previous mechanics . Few pros & many cons. My car was kept for a month. I checked every few days and they didn't even begin the work until 3 + weeks had passed. Simply unacceptable. Then they charged me significantly more then the average flat rate. Don't bother with these guys, completely unprofessional. The only pro was at least they got the job finished. The bare minimum. I would not have gone bad they warned me they'd leave my car sitting for weeks. If it weren't for the fact that I had a second vehicle to use in the meantime, I would've taken my car back by week 1 when I realized they weren't in any rush to start the work. read more

Not only were they happy to work on a car everybody else doesn't want to touch, but they were quick, communicative, pretty cheap, and honestly, they were super nice and connected to me like a real person, rather than someone with a quota to fill or a script to follow. This is the only place in Gainesville that I will take my car. Don, the owner, is great! He always makes sure to tell me exactly what was wrong with my car and how I can help to prevent it from happening again. They are very good about remembering their customers. After being there only three times they knew my name and what car I drove. I love that they know the history of my car. Being able to walk in and know that they are not going to just mess everything up is awesome. They are also not like most places where they tell you that something else that you did not come in for also needs to be fixed. They are very honest and I trust them with my car. It may sound silly but I did not know where to go to change one of my brake lights. I drove in and told them what happened, the guy at the front desk (Doug) asked me to pop my trunk and he had in done in less than a minute. I asked him what I owed him and he told me that I didn't owe them anything because the light bulb only cost about a dollar. Being able to have them take care of something like that at no charge is awesome. I definitely don't know everything about cars and am learning but having them there is awesome. I highly recommend this place!!!! We will from now on take our vehicles only to Ahrens. We are also are referring friends their way. They are kind,honest, fast and do excellent work. I had original went to Tire Plus on 43rd for a oil change. Tire plus informed me that I had a bad oil leak and it will be 14 hrs to fix it in addition it would cost $1,800. They told me they had to drop my transmission to fix the leak. I was very grateful they told me about the leak and that it needed to be fixed urgently. $1,800 is a lot of money and i needed my car desperately to go to work. We wanted to double check elsewhere for better pricing before we put down that much.My husband checked on Gainesville reddit and it recommend Ahrens. I call and told Ahrens Auto about the terrible leak I had. He got me right in. I showed him the receipt from Tire Plus about where the leak was. Ahren's Auto did their own diagnostics. The leak was NOT where Tire Plus had said it was ,it was NOT a 14 hour job and most importantly it was NOT $1800 Job!!! Ahrens Auto got my leak fixed under 2-3 hours and found were my leak actually was. I only paid $300. DO NOT COME HERE! I've brought my car here twice and it has ended up a disaster for me and being the worst decision. Originally brought it in for a routine maintenance, which I thought had gone fine, but certainly wasn't cheap by any means. Later, not long at all after I had this done by this maintenance done, my car began stalling and turning off (including on I75). I brought it back to Arhen's to ask them if they knew what it could be, after they performed a $100 diagnostics check WITHOUT my permission, they claimed it was nearly a thousand dollar fix. The estimate didn't include the money I had already spent twice coming to his shop. Come to find out after getting a well advised second opinion, the problem they found (and charged me to find) did not exist, and the ACTUAL problem with the vehicle was because THEY USED THE WRONG OIL FILTER. It did not fit the car nor was it a brand for my car. Ended up getting my car fixed for $30 and drove it across the country the next day, to have no alleged problems as Ahrens Claimed. I live in Montana, but my daughter goes to UF in Gainesville. My daughter's 04' Jeep Liberty started letting off steam so she took it there to find out the problem. Cracked radiator. I felt a bit vulnerable due to being such a distance away. Dave, the manager, put me at ease and made me feel that he was going to take care of the situation honestly and correctly. Very fair and exceptional with response to my email and text with questions about my cars repairs and they even were able to prioritize certain issues so that I could safely drive with the brakes being done and still bring it back next week when I have time to leave it which they offered to give me a ride to work and pick me up when it is done. I took my car to Ahren's for a second opinion after being told I needed a new rack and pinion for $900. At Ahren's I was told that I had two torn boots but that since there was no leaking of oil from the rack, it was fine. I just needed new boots--- $150. Also...I was quoted $260 for the power window switch at the first place, and at Ahren's they quoted me $160 for that part. They have my business now, and I won't take it anywhere else. read more

Few days ago I had high beam lamps replaced with HID lights in my Honda Odyssey 2005. There is no issue with the lights and they are working fine. However, when the front bumper was removed to access the lights, front splash shield and fender liners were also removed. These parts were not put back properly as two days after this work was done, the splash shield came off when I was driving on the highway. Not only the splash shield came off but right fender liner also came off with it and nearly caused a serious accident to the vehicle behind my van. Luckily liner did not cut off the brake fluid lines when it came off at high speed. I was really shocked when this happened as owner had mentioned that this shop specialize in Honda repairs. I was planning to take this van back to this shop for more work but after this experience and cost of $375 to replace missing splash shield and liners I am not sure about this shops qualifications and claims. read more

The never try and sell you something you don't need and if you do need something they'll explain everything to you and let you make the decision. Recently I took my Honda in because a headlight was burnt out. They had replaced this same headlight 8 months before. The did some tests and determined the bulb was not a good quality bulb and they replaced it free of charge. I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. read more
