Popped in for a family meal. It was a nice size family meal for around $37. I got pulled pork, beans, cornbread, 4 rolls. I would have liked to have swapped out the cornbread for another size versus having 2 bread options. The meal could easily feed 3-4. City BBQ will always have good texture but lack flavor. I ordered the 2 meats 2 sides which consist of the smoked Turkey breast, brisket, greens and potato salad. The turkey and brisket was very good. I also ordered a few ribs too, which was also very good. In my opinion, the greens had to much vinegar in them. And I didn't really care for the potato salad. I also got the banana pudding and the chocolate cake, I didn't really like neither of these desserts either.The manager was very great about replacing items that I didn't like. read more

The food is pretty consistent here! Always flavorful but sometimes lacks with the portion sizes. My go-to is the brisket cowbell with extra peppers and onions plus I add bacon. Yeah, pork on pork deliciousness! Sides of green beans with bacon and potato salad. Listen, that potato salad is the truth in my books! The most consistent thing I've had besides their bomb ass pickles! You can buy them by the pint and gallon ~ Do it, if you love pickles! Service is always on point! This wasn't it by any means. I really don't eat bbq often but had a quick craving and was on the Battleground side of town so decided to go to City BBQ since it's been a while. Regretted it. Went at a still solid hour 730ish and they were out of Mac and cheese...one of the main sides we wanted. Opted for the potato salad which was the best thing of the entire meal. Hush puppies were dry and small, one more minute and probably burnt. The worst thing was the brisket and the bbq pork. The brisket....looked so, so odd and tasted very bad. For a chain, it actually serves up decent BBQ. I can't expect GOAT Carolina style BBQ, but for that I have my local go-to spots. I was craving ribs so I turned to Yelp to help me find the right spot. I had passed this spot many times but just didn't have it on my mind to try. We got the sampler platter to split between two people because of the price and we knew we wanted to try several things. This wound up being a better deal for us as you need to purchase any sides separately. We chose the fries and the okra and I must say I enjoyed the fresh cut fries and perfectly fried okra as much as we did the meats!!! I especially loved the ribs. They were tender and meaty without a lot of fat. The flavor was perfectly smoked and the sauce was light with a slight char. I also really enjoyed the brisket. Visited city barbeque today for lunch and i don't know what happened to this place but the Mac n cheese sucked. It was dry and flavorless with a texture that resembled rubber.. The pork belly burnt ends were also dry. French fries had no salt on them. We came to the counter to order and the cashier looked like she hated her life. She lacked basic customer service skills and seemed annoyed to be there. I used to love coming here but it went down the drain in recent months. What a shame. read more

SICK AS A DOG. I moved to Greensboro from Texas 5 years ago. I was delighted to find a place with great brisket. They had a great pitmaster that did a low and slow brisket with a great bark and Smokey flavor. That is up until about 2 months ago. Instead of the usual chopped brisket I was served some grey spongy mystery meat that had never seen the inside of a smoker. A few weeks ago my wife who is a shredded pork fan talked me into going back for another try. We shared 3 sides. She had the pork and I had the brisket. It was the same grey mystery meat that had no taste. Three o'clock in the morning I was hit with the most violent case of food poisoning ever. Since we had shared everything else it had to be the strange tasting brisket. The owners of this establishment need to be aware of the gross mismanagement of the Lawndale location. read more

Great BBQ at a fair price. Its not the fanciest BBQ place, but it's also a step up from wax paper and white bread. A nice casual place with the best BBQ I've had outside of Lockwood Texas. We ordered 2 city platters for 3 of us and had some leftovers. The brisket was awesome. BBQ Pork was delicious and tangy. Sausage was great. However, I would have been more comfortable with it costing $1-$2 less. The pork was good but less flavorful than I prefer. The hush puppies left much to be desired. This is the 3rd time I've been to this restaurant and my whole family loves it. Every time I visit Greensboro I get a meal here. I forgot to take pictures but I got the Bama pulled chicken and oh my goodness! You can't see that there sauce but you can taste it. It's so flavorful. For our sides we got the collard greens, corn pudding, potato salad and macaroni and cheese. All of them were like eating at my grandma's house. And the Texas toast was the perfect bread. My husband got the brisket and sausage and said they were delicious. Service is always great. The staff is friendly and accommodating. It's pretty quiet when you sit inside to eat. I don't understand the hate this place gets. I've had some of the most highly recommended bbq in different locations the in USA, including some renowned spots I've went out of my way for. When it come to City BBQ, every experience I've had has been great here. It's miles above Stamey's and better than Country BBQ. This is the best BBQ you're going to get for a chain establishment. I think the portions and prices are reasonable as well. Their variety of sauces, sides and the good quality of their meats keeps me and my family coming back. My wife and I can split a sampler, my daughter gets the chicken tenders, and my two-year-old son loves the baked beans. All of that comes to just around $30 for a family of four. You'd easily spend more that on an inferior meal at McDonald's. Give this place a shot! read more

It's the quintessential Southern meal! Their sandwiches (particularly the pulled chicken) and banana pudding are excellent. When things are on point, they all taste homemade. I like their original sauce, which must be flavored with molasses--it's smoky, sweet, and thicker. Unfortunately, the mac and cheese and potato salad can be hit or miss. read more

My first time visiting and the waitress and manager were very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations!! I ordered the Pic 2 (Brisket and Sausage) and Mac n Cheese along with strawberry cobbler. Yum! I waited 5-8 minutes and my food was piping HOT!! No I didn't and wasn't expecting to finish my food because it was a LOT of food!! This meal lasted 3-meals. That's how big the portions were. Ordered $185 of food for my team. Delivery took an hour then when the driver did show up, he dropped off the food in a plastic grocery store bag. The "Original Sauce" was served in 4oz. ramekins. We ordered six meats by the pound and only received four. We ordered a small party platter of salad, did not receive that either. I called and whomever answered the phone was nice but checked in with his kitchen staff and realized they were missing the items. He one driver was on his way with the missing meat, then he had to send another driver with the missing salad. The doordash delivery guy was no help either. I stopped him before he left and he said that they didn't give him a salad. I asked him to check the receipt, he said he didn't have one. He said the receipt was stappled to the bag, there was no receipt to be found. SMH...meanwhile I have management in from out of town and nobody is eating because half of the order is missing! This is as close to true Texas barbecue that I have found in NC. There is a great variety of menu options, delicious sides, and just the smell in the parking lot is enough to make you come inside! The cornbread almost melts in your mouth and the different side options are great. The biggest sell for me were the cold bottles of Big Red as you walk up to the register. I moved to Greensboro, NC from Nashville, TN so I'm used to my Edleys BBQ, but I came in and tried City BBQ while I'm out running my errands and I am very impressed. The staff was very friendly, specifically Courtney, who upon entering I was greeted and had my order taken right away. What led me to get on yelp and leave this review though was the CLEANLINESS! The restaurant was very clean and the bathrooms were even cleaner. My whole experience here was great. I got the bama chicken sandwich that was made darn good and tasted great. The staff seemed happy and you could tell from behind the counter they were laughing talking smiling joking with each other. I've had this place bookmarked for a while now, after hearing good things from friends and family. Finally, we were in the area, and hungry, so popped in for some 'cue. Wanting to get a good variety, we went with the City Sampler (brisket, pulled pork, sausage, turkey, and two sides). For our sides, we chose baked beans with brisket, green beans with bacon, and corn pudding. All of the meats were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. They also provided a choice of four sauces, none of which were really needed. The sides were also good, though my gf thought the green beans were too mushy, and the corn pudding had a slight sweet note I wasn't prepared for. (would prefer more savory, with some green chilies, possibly; but I'm a Yankee..) Beverage choices were pretty standard, fountain drinks and teas. (Give me a good Red Zinfandel!) My lemonade was a tasty choice, however. We will definitely return. read more

Tried this place not long after it opened and wasn't overly impressed; however, recently I attended an event that was catered by City BBQ & was pleasantly surprised how tasty the brisket, mac & cheese and banana pudding were, so I decided to give it another shot. I should mention, I'm originally from Lexington & grew up just across the river in Rowan County (which has BBQ to rival & even surpass the more hyped up Lexington joints, imo) & have also lived down east NC & experienced their BBQ as well-I'm now a convert to the eastern NC vinegar sauce rather than ketchupy Lexington-style "dip" (most Rowan Q joints employ a superior hybrid-style sauce with more vinegar & pepper, much less ketchup, which is in line with my eastern sauce preference), but I still prefer coarse chopped Q over pulled Q, BBQ slaw over cole, & hushpuppies over corn sticks; that said, the best eastern Q can stand shoulder-to-shoulder, so to speak, with western Lexington-style Q. So I'm supremely confident I know my NC pork cue. So anyway, back to my visit. I went in a little late, ordering around 8:30, and was worried they might be out of several items, but they had my 2 meats/sides order of brisket & pulled pork, accompanied by collard greens & mac, with a banana pudding thrown in for dessert. The total tab for my meal came to $25, which imo is a bit expensive for a fast-casual BBQ concept, but I figured well, if the meal matches up to the catered experience I previously had then I'm okay with paying that. The verdict? Meh, disappointing overall, given the previous catered meal experience I had. This experience did not measure up. The sides were both decently good taste-wise overall, with chunks of pork flavoring the collards, though they were a bit too salty, probably from the pork. The portions of the sides were on the smallish side though, considering I paid $19 for the meal. The bigger problems came with the meats themselves: 1) the brisket was rubbery and tough overall, 2) the pulled pork portion was also on the skimpy side for having paid $19 for the meal ,& 3) both meats were served at no better than room temperature by the time I received them. Pulled pork is more easily consumed & enjoyed at lower temperatures than brisket imo, so by the time I tried the brisket it was basically already cold, which only accentuated the rubbery toughness. In addition, the expediter initially forgot my banana pudding & I had to go request it after realizing it wasn't provided-not a big deal in itself, but it does lead me to wonder if this wasn't also the problem with the lukewarm meats, as in perhaps the expediter, anticipating the end of the day & socializing with other employees, was just as inattentive with the rest of the order as she was the banana pudding & let it sit there unexpedited for a few minutes. Under the "you get what you pay for" maxim, not really a huge deal if I was only dropping $10 on a fast-casual meal, but when I'm dropping $25 at a fast-casual joint, I expect the service to be pretty much on point; otherwise I should just go to a full-service restaurant and spend that $25. I should also add, it wasn't really busy at that hour so there's no excuse for the oversight, just uneven service. The banana pudding was tasty, perhaps the high point, but overall, will I return? Not likely, or at the least very infrequently. $25 is a pretty penny to pay at a fast-casual concept, & when I receive the kind of "meh" service & overall "just okay" product I did, I'm not motivated to return-not when there are full service BBQ restaurants in the area that cost no more (some even less), provide prompt service, will bring any forgotten items without me having to get up, and a better overall product. Note to City BBQ management: You owe it to yourself to go check out The Smoke Pit, a full-service small BBQ chain (though perhaps not small for long) based out of Salisbury, doing the exact same thing as you, and putting out a superior product in all aspects (better flavors, larger portions of everything, full service) for essentially the same price point. You ought to go check out this competition and take notes, because if they ever come to this area, they will EAT YOUR LUNCH. For the record, I'm not in any way affiliated with SP, but note this: I REGULARLY drive an hour down the road from Greensboro (once every 6-8 weeks or so) to eat there-that's how good they are. I live 10 minutes from both your Lawndale & Hwy 68 locations and regularly drive past the Lawndale location, and after this experience I doubt I'll even stop more than once a year, if that, to eat at your establishment. That should speak volumes to you about the overall perceived value provided by your establishment. Pick up your game. read more

I've been by here a few times now and have really liked everything thing I've tried including the sides. The drive thru is really convenient. The brisket and burnt ends are my favorites, but on last visit the lady told me they didn't have burnt ends anymore, hopefully they come back. I've never been to a bbq place looking for a salad, but I've had the brisket and the pulled pork salad here and they were really good, the ones I have had were made with super fresh and bright colored vegetables, no wilted or old brown produce here. First time here. I was so hungry that I was HANGRY. Downloaded the app to get $5 off $30. Totally worth it. We are HUGE Brisket eaters. Was disappointed that brisket was $3 more in the 2 meat plate. The meal itself was good, unfortunately the brisket didn't have that smoked flavor we were hoping for, we only got 2 thin slices and it was cool in temperature. The sauces were good but didn't have that made fresh from scratch taste. The sausage, green beans, mac n cheese were very good. The place had a real BBQ feel. Wood and industrial style is one of my favorites, plenty of paper towels on the tables. The service was quick and friendly.
