This is the second City BBQ I've been to. And let me say....it was just as lip-smackin', finger-lickin' good as the first time! Both times I had the City BBQ which comes with a sampler of all the meats, garlic bread and two sides. Food is very good when they have it, problem is they always seem to be out of half the menu. Many of the employees appear to be miserable and appear annoyed by the fact that they have to take an order or get food. I haven't been here in a while but after a snowy Saturday evening, decided to stop since it wasn't that busy and wanted some banana pudding. First to start with the good. The banana pudding is still great and very much hits the spot for a great after dinner desert. Now the bad. Since when did the prices go up???? 8.50 for a pulled chicken sandwich with three bones in it with little taste? 3.29 for two sides? So nearly 12 dollars for something that is average in taste. I used to get two sides but settled for one - potato salad while my wife got the leg/thigh with potato salad and green beans. Green beans had a weird taste but she also enjoyed the thick potato salad. City BBQ has the best lunch! I always get the turkey with 2 side salads. I love that the salads are a leafy green mix, not iceberg. The apple cider vinaigrette is the best! They give you a nice turkey portion; it's always flavorful, not dry. I love the tea/lemonade, too. I always mix them, so hard to say which I like the most. Finally, I have the app and love the rewards. They're much better than the (few) other dining rewards I have. read more

I would like to start off saying that I like City Barbecue. By far, the best baked mac and cheese I've bought lol. I'm just so disappointed in the consistency of their food. I usually get a cowbell and tonight I tried pulled pork. I picked up my order from the restaurant not even 10 minutes after I placed it online (super quick service!). Although, when I got home, my sandwich was so soggy and gross... the pile next to the sandwich was in the wrapper like that. The bread is filled with grease. I understand ordering pickup, not everything is perfect, especially ordering juicy meat on bread haha. However, whoever made this sandwich did me dirty. Also, why is there only silverware included when I don't actually need it? Lol read more

City Barbecue is much better at it's original spot in Arlington, Ohio. 2111 W. Henderson Rd. Columbus, Ohio. The restaurant in Newark gives smaller portions which is sadly disappointing considering it's only 10 minutes from home. The brisket has been dry & fatty the last 2 orders. They are getting even skimpier since the inflation crisis. The containers for sides have shrunk. Their yummy Peach cobler used to a full container. Now it's 3/4 full. Seems everything is shrinking & prices just go up.. A piece of cornbread is over $3!! This used to be such a great place for bbq. Pork & ribs are still delicious! Bbq sauces great. Sides such as, baked beans, corn pudding, potato salad & house cut fries are delicious. Make sure to get the chocolate cake!! It doesn't disappoint & it's still the same size. Since Covid hit, it's barely the wonderful place it used to be. I'm extremely saddened as we used to visit on a regular basis. I am having a party catered by them. Huge fan of City, I think they get better as time goes on. Very friendly staff that works with you if you ha e dietary issues (GF) fries are super good, my favorite ribs anywhere, brisket has a well defined smoke ring and the flavor is amazing. My wife only gets the chicken... she is addicted to it, can't get her away from it. 5-6 sauce choices and you can mix them to your liking. Always great food and flavor, love the peach cobbler as well. We typically get the judges platter a mix of chicken, brisket, pork, and ribs. Sometimes the brisket is a bit dry but most times it very juicy and delicious. The sides are great and they seem to give you good portions vs some of the others around here, plus the dudes taste great as well. I go to a lot of City Barbeques, not just this one. It's a toss-up between this one and the location out in Beavercreek as to which one I'm at most often, with the Reynoldsburg location being a respectable 3rd-most-often. There's a reason I go to City BBQ whenever I get a chance, and that's because it's amazingly delicious. City BBQs vary slightly in quality depending on location and what time of day you get in. That's going to make it sound like some of them can be not-that-great sometimes. Incorrect. The worst experience I've ever had at a City BBQ was still an 8.5 out of 10, and it happened when I rolled up less than a half hour before closing on a Wednesday night. I'm going to say average is about 9.7 out of 10. Anyway, this one. Part of the reason I go to this City BBQ so often is because it's so consistently good. The folks who run it are always among the nicest of City BBQ employees and joke around as they get our food and orders. Me and my work partner rolled into this one just before closing one night and offered to get it to go so we didn't keep them, but they said it wasn't a problem at all and I'm pretty sure they loaded us up with extra meat on our plates as well and sent us packing with extra cups of sweet tea. The menu, of course... I'm pretty much evenly split on whether I get a 2 meat platter with pork and brisket, or a 2 meat with sausage and brisket. The sausages have a lot of snap and are actually a bit spicy. Always hot and delicious. The pork tastes like smoke and pork, which means it's everything I want out of pulled pork. And if I happen to want vinegar on my pork, they have something called Swine Wine that happens to be a spicy vinegar sauce that should make any Carolina BBQ fan happy. The brisket, though. First of all they consistently get their brisket moist. Sometimes downright juicy, but always moist enough that you don't need to keep sipping on a drink to get it down. Rich beef flavor. That little strip of fat that runs along the top of the brisket practically caramelizes. Best brisket ever. It goes especially well with their sweeter BBQ sauces - if I don't just scomp it up plain. The barbecue sauce selection is phenomenal. They've got their usual sauces - Original (regular), Brushfire (spicy), Sweet Baby Ray's (sour... no, sweet), Lowcow Mustard (Georgia-style mustard based sauce), Bourbon (sweet but not as sweet as the sweet). They also do seasonal sauces - I always love the Peach Habanero when they have it because it's fiery hot and it really tastes like peaches! They had a Montreal, a sort of salty, zesty sauce which I liked by itself but I could never figure out what it would go best on. As for dessert, I'm usually too full for banana pudding but sometimes I get some anyway because it's good. Usually I drink sweet tea, on the incredibly rare times I'm at a City BBQ and it's not a work trip I'll get a beer. What I'm saying here is that ANY City BBQ is great, but this one is especially nice even by City BBQ standards. If I had any critical feedback - and I do, that's why I'm writing this - I'd love to see them add white BBQ sauce to their sauce repertoire. I mean, I know since it's made with eggs and mayo it would spoil a lot faster than their others and that since white sauce is mostly unknown outside Alabama it might not get used much by Ohioans, but if they had white sauce I would be eating the absolute heck out of their turkey. read more

Ate here while visiting my bro at Denison. Alas, if only BBQ revue would open a restaurant here instead - sorry City BBQ, but this experience paled in comparison. Service - very nice. Best part of the meal, unfortunately Food - BBQ was pretty good. I like that they have 3 sauces, altho personally I prefer that pulled pork be cooked in the sauce - I think it ends up more flavorful that way. The mac and cheese was not at all tasty - the cheese tasted bland and fake, a la Easy Mac. Added a bunch of salt and pepper and still found it totally unappetizing. I did like the cornbread altho it was not stellar. No complaints on the sweet tea. Misc - they do not recycle!! This blew my mind. I was visiting from Seattle where recycling is practiced with almost religious fervor, so the sight of plastic cups and glass bottles getting thrown in the trash totally turned my stomach. Sorry but that is totally retrograde and barbaric. Maybe that seems harsh, but c'mon! (I took mine home to recycle.) Maybe if you are unable to trek far from campus you would make this a haunt, but I would do so begrudgingly. I feel kind of bad rating 3 stars since the people seemed nice and I like to eat local, but there is definitely room for improvement. read more

I wish we had places like this where I'm from. Good old fashioned BBQ basics. Delicious meats and great sides to boot. The layout is accommodating and they even have a lunch option that's reasonably priced w/just the right amount of food. The even have a station with all of the extra fixin's to get everything you need to enjoy your meal. Writing this review is making me hungry for something that I cannot have :( read more

I am really picky about my BBQ so I will critique it a little more than proably the normal person.. I really wanted to order the sampler so I can try everything but I felt I couldnt eat it all. So I decided to get the half slab of ribs, with Mac and cheese and vinagar slaw. First I will do the in general review. Everything was good. the ribs was fall off the bone. sauce was ok.. Mac and cheese was good. and the slaw.. well I hardly like slaw anywhere. I dont the like the hard crutch of the slaw.. however I would have to say this is number 2 that i ever ate.. It only had a little crunch.. But everyone prefers the crunch so I am really different.. My #1 is Long John Silvers, So yeah I not a slaw expert.. LOL now the cirtque.. The Ribs had a little chew on the outside of the ribs. I like mine a little more tender. if just on the crust of the Ribs.. Just a preference I have.. I could barely taste the smoke flavor int he ribs.. I like a little more smoke flavor. with the BBQ sauce, I could taste any seasoning on the ribs. BBQ was good but it was just ok. In short I would revisit to try the rest of the BBQ since the ribs are hard to cook right. the food is good but isnt the best I have had. read more

First visit to this location, but not first to City. It looks pretty new: clean, well-organized, and full of smoky meat smells. The service was excellent; friendly and efficient, and though there was a problem with the order it was resolved well. Wow! Sooooo happy our group selected this place for lunch on Saturday. We were in the area at the flint ridge dig and this was pretty close by. Yum for the pulled pork, Yum for the chicken, yum for the brisket and yum for the ribs! The decor and atmosphere is warehouse cool. Cement floor painted with logos, local team jerseys on the walls. It's clean and inviting. We had the Judge's sampler ($26.99) which includes four types of meat (see above). Two sides, (basket of fries and baked beans) cornbread. We upgraded to larger sizes for an extra $3.00 and ordered an extra side salad and Mac and cheese for $3.29. I'm glad we made that choice, the baked beans were quite good, had a smokiness about them with chunks of meat, very tasty. The basket of fries were rough cut with skin on, also good. The side salad is generous and the apple cider vinaigrette was light and zesty. The mac and cheese is nothing to write home about. That was our only disappointment here. At your table they have baskets of barbq sauce choices ranging from Sweet to firehouse hot, and all the other condiments your heart desires. Others in our group ordered kids meals, sandwiches, beer, cider etc. we were all happy and would definitely recommend and return! read more

I have been a fan of BBQ for ages and have eaten at places all over the country, I have to say City BBQ is awesome. First thing one notices when they arrive is the great service. Everyone here is as friendly as one can get, the ONLY place I have ever had such good customer service has been in the Apple stores. They take pride in service and if something is not right, they will make it right guaranteed. The next thing you notice is the food. I have a hard time deciding and usually end up with a City Sampler. They have raised prices recently and even on a budget we go at least two to three times every pay period just for the excellent food. As a native Texan, I KNOW my BBQ. City Barbeque brought me back home. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I got the More Cowbell and the brisket was perfectly tender with no fat (which i like). Best BBQ place in the Midwest...period. I travel a ton for business and I LOVE pit BBQ! I have worked in all the Mecca's of BBQ...North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas City and all over Texas. In the Midwest I am usually forced to the chains like Smokey Bones and Famous Dave's. They are OK but that's about it. I haven't tried the other City BBQ locations but this one in Newark is the best BBQ place I have seen north of a line from Kansas City to North Carolina end of story I got the City Sampler which came with Smoked Turkey Breast, Smoked Summer Sausage, Smoked Pulled Pork and Smoked Brisket. I got the sampler so I could figure out what my favorite(s) would be if I was to come back. It didn't help me...because they all were GREAT! Brisket was lean, fell apart like it was pulled pork but not died out. Pulled pork was great too. Not fatty and not dry like leather. Smoked Turkey breast was flavorful and juicy. Smoked Sausage was lean and moist but cooked through. Across the board it was all just perfectly executed pit smoked meat. The City Sampler was $15.99 with 2 sides and Texas Toast. Add in a soda and it was just under $20 w tax.. The portions were large. I was by myself and got two meals out of my platter but had I been with my wife we could have gotten by with one City Sampler easy. For my two sides I chose Gumbo and Mac&Cheese. The Gumbo was real good. Thick Served over rice, the meat was smoked turkey breast instead of Seafood like you would expect in Louisiana. It had a kick to it but was not overly hot to the point it was overwhelming. The Mac&Cheese...real good. Probably the best basic dinner style M&C I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Nothing fancy, just executed perfectly. The cheese was creamy not clumpy and taste good. Better than moms (don't tell my mom) I can honestly say it was great BBQ and sides for a fair price considering the quality of the meats and size of the portion. Yes....it's more expensive than Arby's or Wendy's but it is worth every penny. I have been working here in Newark for two weeks and kicking myself for not trying this place before now! HUGE HUGE FAN OF CITY BBQ. There really is not anything negative I can say about this place. For first time visitors, this is what you need to know. -Restaurant is a quick serve location. Customers come to the front counter, order their food, and within a few minutes the delicious BBQ is served to them. Meat comes flavored with rub and seasoning, but for the most part BBQ is what you choose to add. There are many different bottles/flavors to choose from including Brushfire (hot) and Bourbon (personal favorite). Variety and flavor scheme to meet everyone needs. -Food-there does not seem to be a bad option. Sandwich and a side will run you around $9-10 and the platter (2 meats and 2 sides) will you run you $13. For a hungry guy, this is the option to go with. Brisket and Pulled Pork are delicious. I cannot speak for the other selections but would assume much of the same. Side dishes are AMAZING. There a lot of options for any individual. Fries are fries to me, but there are plenty of creative choices such as sweet potato casserole, corn pudding, potato salad, green beans. -Quality is worth the price. I have been to many of the top BBQ establishments and while the tenderness/juiciness does not quite compare to the Franklins of the world (Austin,TX) it does live up to the hype. WORST meal ever! Picked up a 4-6 family pack to go tonight with pulled pork and pulled chicken. Side dishes were french fries and baked beans with brisket. Also ordered fried pickles. We have picked up carry out many times and enjoyed our meals, but this was the absolute worst meal ever tonight! The fries were undercooked and oily. The fried pickles were dripping pickle juice, had little to no breading on them and they were barely cooked. The pulled chicken looked disgusting - it was oily and looked like it had been dumped from a can rather than smoked all day! The best part of the meal was the baked beans with brisket. We will NOT be returning until the employees learn how to properly cook to to the standards of what once upon a time was decent BBQ. read more

For Thanksgiving this year, I ordered a smoked turkey breast, family side of corn pudding and family side of green beans. Best food decision I've made in a long, long time. The sides were absolutely delicious and the turkey was just amazing. I've always been of the belief that turkey was both dry and flavorless. City Barbeque has cured me of that falsehood. So delicious! I won't be waiting a year to place this order, again. I just think, since they've raised the prices by getting rid of the platters and making all of the sides a la carte, that the cost is not commensurate with the value. I got a brisket sandwich, mac 'n cheese and hush puppies for sides and a regular soda. Cost me $15. $8.50 for a brisket sandwich alone is too much. I'll go somewhere else to get a meal for $2-$5 cheaper with as much or more good food than I received. Nice try though with the platters. Took the Wife out to dinner on Sunday night and had an ok time. Food is over priced but tasted ok. Staff was nice and love the iced tea. Main problem was i drove around the back of the building and the cook who made my order and another were out back and it seemed as they was smoking dope. Smelled like it.
