Had a taste for barbecue on a Sunday night. Knowing the place closed at 9 PM, I tried to order online at 820p. Website wouldn't accept an order. Telephoned them and said I could be there in 10 minutes, but they refused to take an order over the phone. Drove to the restaurant, entering at 845p (despite needing to turn around, due to their unmarked entrance, and "do not enter" sign at the natural driveway into the front door). They were out of every meat option except for two. Register was closed, but they were "willing to take cash." Offered nothing, no extra side, or anything, for the troubles. 20 bucks, buys you a sampler of the two meats they had left, and that "Sampler" doesn't even include sides. Staff were preoccupied and wholly dismissive, including the manager. So, in sum, difficult to get to, grossly, overpriced, and poor customer service. And a chain restaurant in the middle of one of the finest bbq regions in the country. Learn from my mistakes and steer clear of this place. read more

Very disorganized and very slow despite having so many people working. The brisket was dry and had an odd aftertaste. The mac & cheese was OK, the potato salad was not traditionally southern sweet. My wife and I have gone to a few city bbq locations in the area and as a chain, they are a solid option. They have a good variety of barbeque and sauce options that are absolutely delicious. I will say that this is the most disappointing location we've ordered from. Compared to other locations, the service and quality just generally seems lower. I was taking my family to the North Carolina Museum of Art, but we stopped to get some lunch. We had a hankering for some delicious barbecue, so pulled into City Barbecue. Upon entering the dining room area, I found it to be spacious and clean. The drink station was well stocked and organized. It also contained some of the best barbecue sauces around. We ordered some lean brisket, macaroni and cheese, green beans, potato salad and coleslaw. The staff was highly efficient and professional towards the needs of the customer. They took their time explaining the menu and meal options. I'm a sweet tea snob and I found their sweet tea delicious, just the right amount of sweet goodness. My daughter loved the lemonade. I found the lean brisket to be a little to fatty on a couple pieces, but it was wonderful. My wife absolutely raved over the coleslaw. We also sampled every sauces in the restaurant and found them brisket worthy. The dinning room seating was spread out enough where you weren't sitting on top of another customer. They also had some wonderful outside seating areas. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. The eating experience was top of the line and the food was right on the mark. read more

I like City Barbeque for its consistently good brisket. They're on my catering short list when I host work parties and luncheons. Their St. Louis style ribs are fall-off-the bone tender, and their pulled pork is very succulent. Their mac and cheese is really delicious, especially if you are a real cheese lover. The collard greens with pork have a really nice spicy kick. I've ordered a variety of items from them, for both group orders and catering, and so far I've only had one issue, and the restaurant issued me an immediate refund. It has been 30 years since my last visit here in NC, but I always visit the location in Columbus, Oh. This stops now. I placed an order at Boones Trail location. had missing items and the food was mediocre at best. Meat was dry, which was even worse ginger in greens was absurd! This location just recently opened and they have a lot of growing pains. If you have any problems ask for the manager. That's what I did. The direct, unlisted phone number to the store is 919-230-7810 The food was fine just some dumb mistakes made in my take out order. (Paid for 12 ribs, got 8. Asked for pickles got jalapeños. Crew lead said he issues refund but next day saw he charge me rather than giving refund). One I got to Christian he got it worked out and emailed me a receipt showing the refund So, check everything before you leave. If you ordered ribs make sure they gave you the right number. If it's rib night, don't accept a burnt end if you don't like burnt ends. Tip- brisket can be fatty. If you want lean ask for it and make sure that's what you get. I plan to give the a second chance in a week or so and will update my review read more

Was not that bad but I have had better. The pulled pork was great with good flavor. The brisket was dry but had a good flavor. Coleslaw was inedible, incredibly liquidity with no flavor once so ever. Overall pretty good. If I return I'll have to rethink what I order. read more

Solid Carolina barbecue. Honestly, better than a few big-name joints in Raleigh I could name. The meat is flavorful, the sauce is vinegary, the collards are well-seasoned. I had the pulled pork sandwich with NC BBQ sauce and a side of collards, to test the essentials. A lot of places I've been for Carolina bbq, the pulled pork by itself is actually pretty bland until you put sauce on it - it needs more fat, salt, smoke, or something - something is missing. The meat here is flavorful and moist *before* you put your sauce on. The Carolina sauce is vinegary and has a little kick, and after putting it on the meat, there's not too much of anything - it rounds things out nicely. The bun has been heated up and has a nice little bit of crisp to it that helps, too. The collards are well-seasoned. They have some bacon or something (pork, anyway) that gives a nice meaty flavor and some fat, they're salty but not too salty, and they have some kick to them as well. Well done and dark green, but not cooked to oblivion. As for the price - it's not as cheap as your classic country or small-town BBQ joint, but it's also not expensive, really. About the same as what a fast food meal costs these days, tbh, and certainly a step up in quality from there. Would recommend. read more

I stayed away from this restaurant for 8 months giving it a Covid issues consideration. Went there on Saturday night. The $17.00 plus $5 extra for beef brisket was A. The smallest portion of meat I have ever seen. Less than 6 ounces. A huge portion was fat and grease. I also did not enjoy the sides. Mac and Cheese was dry and potato salad loaded with mayo. I used to drive to Cary to eat at City Barbecue and it was always great. Sadly this location hasn't panned out. I notice it is never busy. read more

My friends & family went to this restaurant a couple of days ago. The food was okay. The buns are cold and dry, the food is well seasoned but tastes rushed. The service was mid, after waiting 25 min or so to get the food: they forgot to give us the fries & tater tots. We had to wait an extra 25 minutes to only get the tater tots never got the fries.The last thing I went to the front for was a ranch dip, the white middle aged man threw the ranch at me to the point where other employees looked at him with disbelief. Overall: the food is okay, we ordered a family feed with pulled pork, 3 cheese Mac, & potato salad. Extra side of fries for the family feed. Visited location on 9/22/22 for the first time with the intention of getting a traditional "barbeque plate." In North Carolina this always comes with a choice of sides. The price of the plate was $17.99 but I was surprised to learn that the sides were a la carte - two sides were an extra $5.00. So I'm thinking $23.00 plus tax is $25.00 for a barbeque plate is WAY TOO MUCH. I backed down to a Nashville Chicken sandwich which was great, and a barbeque sandwich which was good, then added three sides and got out for $26 total. Sides of collards, green beans and slaw were very good. I will go back but won't consider spending upwards of $50.00 for two people at a fast food restaurant of any nature. read more

Today, brisket was moist but tasteless and fatty. Other days it's dry and hard. Beans w/brisket are unusually sweet and almost inedible. Other locations seem to have better QC. read more

My daughter and I ate their today and I sense a renewed energy from the associates. Joshua took our order. He was pleasant and very patient as we worked out what we wanted and who was going to pay:) He and another gentleman (I think it may have been the manager) came over to check and make sure everything was okay during our meal. New looking location and prices are a little higher than I might expect (part of that admittedly may be Grubhub's fault, I didn't check their online menu or apparently they have an app). Decent BBQ though, 3 out of 4 meats were totally on point and the last one just wasn't what I was used to coming from Texas and the original sauce was solid too. From other reviews they have seen some inconsistency in the kitchen but if this is where they are currently at they might be very very good in the future. City BBQ is now selling Brisket Tacos. I've never had a brisket taco but these were way beyond good. They were totally awesome. I highly recommend these tacos. As a matter of fact, I've never had a bad meal at City Barbecue. It helps a lot if you like barbecue. read more

Almost the worst bbq I have ever had. Almost as bad as the North Carolina vinegar style mess they call bbq. I grew in Memphis that has some of the best bbq in the world. The bbq at City was somewhere in between. We got 2 pulled pork sandwiches and a side of coleslaw and a side of potato salad. The sandwich was wrapped up in a huge, double wad of paper so you couldn't tell the size of the sandwich. It had a generous amount of meat, but the good part ended there. It was dry, with burned and crunchy pieces, and it was so salty it was impossible to taste anything but salt. It came without sauce. You have to pick 1 of 5 sauces even if you are clueless what each sauce tasted like. The staff didn't do anything but show me bottles of sauce and tell me to pick one. No samples to taste. We chose original. Blah. Almost flavorless. To top it off the meat was tough. I love my pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on top. Thank the stars I tasted the coleslaw first! It was salty and sour with vinegar. Yuck! It should have been creamy with a bit of sweet to it. It was also very dry. The potato salad didn't fair much better. It was dry and blah. The bun disintegrated quickly, and it was a total mess. We ate the sandwich and potato salad so we didn't waste our money totally, but we threw the coleslaw in the trash. Next time we will drive across town to Shane's where we can get some REALLY, GOOD BBQ! So much for trying a new restaurant without looking up a review. Waste of money! read more
