I didn't actually see the dentist because I had an insurance issue, but the front desk staff were so wonderful in helping me figure it out.

Both of our kiddos are patients and they actually love going to the dentist. The space is made just for kids, the dentists, hygienists, and staff are all great at interacting with kids and helping them feel at ease in what for many adults can be a stressful experience. Each part of the process is fun for the kids. You can really tell that Dr. Anamelechi thought through every step of the experience -- from the waiting area with different activities (like coloring and reading) to the fun sunglasses you wear during the visit to the interactive x-rays. My kids feel special throughout and I am grateful to have found a pediatric dentist that offers such a thoughtful and fun experience. Another thing is that they take most insurance and offer sliding scale for families without insurance. The DC location takes BCBS (the MD location does not yet but might be working on it). Anyway if you have kiddos, go to Children's Choice! They will love it!

From the moment that we arrived, everyone was welcoming, friendly, and put us at ease. Thank you!

OMG - I cannot recommend this place enough!! I've had trouble with my teeth my entire life and…read moreafter not having insurance to go to the dentist for a few years - and knowing that I had a least a couple of problems - I was wrecked with anxiety both about what they would tell me and getting the work done. I honestly was on the verge of tears sitting in the chair for my first appointment. Dr. Troy Vagianelis is an anxiety whisperer! He was super calm but engaging. He asked me if there were specific things that raise my anxiety (yes) and he offered work arounds or modifications while still getting everything done. As others have said, the office is nice and clean - but doesn't have that sterile clinical feeling. My appointment started on time and I didn't feel rushed at all. The woman at the front desk was nice and very helpful. I had a question about my insurance and she could answer it! I cannot tell you how much of a relief it is to have found Pahlavani Dental!

If your…read morecleaning starts slowly (mine did), don't worry -- this is a very tech-forward office that uses good tools to make your visit fast and effective. Since I was a new patient, they took a ton of photos to start, and then Dr. Gutierrez showed up to take a look. She ended up taking more photos because she wanted to show me exactly where I was missing in my brushing -- fantastic. A dentist can tell you plenty, but to have it showed to you on a big, clear monitor was great and has permanently changed how I brush. Once it was time for the cleaning, Dr. Gutierrez flew through thanks to the high tech tools and then grabbed the camera to take some more "after" photos to show me the difference. Throughout, she asked me about my habits and gave me very direct, clear advice. Again, I enjoy the dentist generally, and even still, this cleaning made me sit up and appreciate just how good it was. I'll be back!

A Truly Exceptional Experience with Dr. Shin…read more As a nurse with 17 years of experience in procedures and sedation, I've seen my fair share of medical scenarios, but Dr. Shin stands out as one of the best examples of what healthcare should be. My 22-month-old son had a traumatic fall that caused damage to his upper front teeth. Two local dentists recommended pulling the three remaining teeth out immediately, and were dismissive of the need for X-rays, insisting that a child of his age would never sit still for an X-ray and that delaying the extractions could harm his permanent teeth. The plan was to restrain him, inject lidocaine (which I know from personal experience is always painful), and pull the teeth out. I wasn't comfortable with that approach. As a nurse who works with children, I've seen how painful procedures can create lasting fear of medical professionals, and I didn't want that for my son. After exhausting other options, I found Dr. Shin and her team. From the moment we walked into her office, Dr. Shin's approach was a breath of fresh air. She immediately engaged with my son, offering toys and creating a welcoming, trust-filled environment. Dr. Shin suggested taking an X-ray, which other offices had told me wasn't possible with a toddler. It showed that while there was a small chance the teeth would need to come out later if future X-rays show a developing infection, it wasn't urgent, and pulling all of them right away wasn't necessary. I was relieved to hear there was time to consider our options. Dr. Shin explained that one tooth did, in fact, need to be removed soon. She laid out two options for us: The first option involved general anesthesia with an anesthesiologist, who comes to the office once a month. However, as a nurse who starts IVs in children, I know how traumatic receiving an IV can be for a child. The second option, which we chose, was a thoughtful and humane approach. Dr. Shin suggested giving my son a weight-based dose of midazolam, a mild sedative that made him relaxed and sleepy. This allowed him to accept nitrous oxide (laughing gas) with ease, further helping him relax. To minimize pain, she applied a topical numbing agent to his gums before any lidocaine was injected--a step no other office had considered. Thanks to this careful, methodical approach, my son remained calm and comfortable throughout the entire visit. There were no tears, and I'm pretty sure (especially since he could watch his favorite show on the ceiling from the procedural chair), he didn't even realize the tooth had been pulled! Dr. Shin's compassion, skill, and dedication to providing the least traumatic experience possible for children are unparalleled. She took the time to ensure my son's experience was as positive as it could be--focusing not just on the procedure but on his emotional and physical comfort. As a nurse who works with children undergoing medical procedures, I can tell you that it takes a special person to balance decisiveness with gentleness, and to be both quick and patient when necessary. Dr. Shin does all of that, and more. I can't recommend her highly enough. She truly exemplifies the best of what pediatric dentistry can be.
