Worst dentist I've ever experienced. Several failed root canals and other fails due to his incompetence ruined my mouth. I'm in the process of a full mouth restoration at a highly rated dentist who couldn't believe what he was seeing in Dr. Tsaknis' work. Some things with care and experience simply shouldn't happen: painful gum necrosis due to a crown pinching the gum; incomplete root canals failing and becoming infected within a month of being capped and then requiring extraction (after spending a few thousand for treatment and crown). He wanted to break my jaw to realign the bite he misaligned by pulling the failed root canals and teeth shifting. New dentist is able to correct my bite and said breaking my jaw to do so was absurd. Avoid this self-absorbed moron at all costs. It's as though he didn't pay attention AT ALL in dental school or more likely: his parents bought him a DDS. read more

Don't make the mistake I did - Stay away! Worst dentist I've seen in 30yrs. As a military vet, I scheduled a typical bi-annual cleaning. I left with an inexplicable root canal that continues to cause me pain daily. Please note, I have NEVER had any issues, required procedures, or problems with my dental profile before sitting in his chair. After several conversations with him, and enduring seven inexplainable appts, I'm convinced his license should be revoked. Moreover, both his arrogance and lack of quality customer service & leadership is testament to the constant employee turnover in his office. I've been in pain and undergoing various treatments for the last two years thanks to three fillings I allowed Dr. Tsaknis to perform on me. Reading these Yelp reviews is like reading exactly my own story and it's incredibly infuriating. I'd give anything to go back and get a second opinion. He quickly and carelessly performed fillings on me that had to be adjusted many times, refilled a year later, and now root canaled. All this so he could make a few hundred bucks off me. CityDental has masterfully placed locations in convenient areas for working professionals, making for the easiest of access. I also frequently see their advertisements at my local Safeway. What really solidified my decision to use "Dr. T" was CD's Google reviews -- 4.0 stars. This dentistry is a great illusion. Do not fall for them for the same reasons I stated above. The entire operation is an unpleasant sham. Bedside Manner. Excluding one receptionist named Jason, the staff are out of sync. I could go into granular detail, but I will only note the most memorable: my x-ray technician did not care about comfort levels, and ignored me when I told her the mouth piece was uncomfortably piercing the roof of my mouth. She also was in such a rush (they definitely overbook, and that's made evident within the 1st five minutes) and her tone was extremely impatient and unprofessional. A bizarre experience. Dr. T: He comes off as a condescending salesman. I am in my mid-twenties, and he made sure to excessively mention that whenever possible. I sensed no respect from him. He was engaging with me as if I were a child, rather than a young professional -- or more importantly, as his patient. He attempted to upsell me several times and mentioned my insurance even more so. I understand that information is useful when discussing procedures, but there is a heavy emphasis on insurance payouts at this practice. Medical Analysis. I have never had a cavity, but it had been several years since I had seen a dentist and anticipated some bad news due to my absence. My X Rays, however, showed no damage. I did have one spot on a tooth, and Dr. T told me we "might as well fill it in while he's in there (referencing my cleaning)." Procedure. The filling procedure was abysmal. They numbed me before the hygienist began my cleaning. That meant for 35+ minutes, I was uncomfortably receiving a cleaning while partially numb. By the time the Dr. came in, I was not fully numb, and could feel the drilling. He was yelling at his Staff about my not being numb enough. Also, the procedure was entirely rushed. Based on office chatter, it was clear that there was confusion re which room I should have been in, the timing of other patients' procedures, etc. Needless to say, there were probably others waiting to be seen yet already numbed for their procedures. After approximately five painful minutes, when he was "done," I told him I could still feel the filling in my mouth. He hastily drilled me down; I could still feel it. He drilled more.. I could still feel it. He reattempted 3 times before I could no longer feel the filling. Almost 2 weeks later, I am in so much pain from my likely unnecessary and shoddy procedure. After my appointment, I looked up the practice on Yelp, where the reviews accurately reflect this dentistry. Hundreds of reviews all affirm that 1) the staff is unprofessional and disorganized; 2) Dr. T's bedside manner is bizarre and unsettling; 3) misdiagnoses of cavities, wherein patients sought a second opinion from a different dentist; 4) rushed procedures; and 5) money-hungry insurance collectors. I also took another look at those Google reviews. Not only does Dr. T violate HIPPA when he discloses patient's medical records or histories when responding to negative reviews, but there seems to be fake reviews posted on Google as well. There are a few instances where the same user has recently given two different dentists 5-star reviews within the same time-frame (why would a person go to 2 different dentists 3 mos. apart?), and there was also an overlap in reviewed locations (e.g. multiple reviewers who have only reviewed CityDental and a frame shop, photographer, etc). Notwithstanding that, the majority of reviewers have only reviewed CityDental -- this could indicate click-farm behavior. There are obvious suspicions when looking at the Google reviews -- especially considering that ALL other websites have City Dental at 2 or lower stars. This was one if the worst medical experiences of my life, and I strongly consider potential patients to exhaustively review the available reviews before visiting this practice. read more

I didn't actually see the dentist because I had an insurance issue, but the front desk staff were so wonderful in helping me figure it out.

I wouldn't recommend this place. The first dentist I saw recommended all sorts of work. I couldn't come in during the time he was in the office, so I asked for another dentist. They agreed with hesitation. That dentist then said I actually didn't need all of the work the first dentist said I did. On top of that, they did not adequately estimate my insurance coverage and sent me a bill months later. I asked to speak to the billing representative and they said she would call me back. She never called. I called again a month later and finally got a call back a few days after, but this will be 8 months after my appointment and I'm stuck with an extra $150 bill on top of the $700 out of pocket before. She blamed it all on my insurance. I think it sounds more like not adequately knowing the insurance policies that you accept. read more

I've been going to Dr. Tsaknis for five years. He diagnosed me with sleep apnea when no other doctors had picked up on it. Yes...a dentist, asked the right questions and sent me to a sleep doctor so I could get a sleep study done. The sleep study confirmed I had sleep apnea so then Dr. T could figure out the next course of action. Rather than pay hundreds of dollars on a night guard, he wanted to make sure that I was set up for success for the long haul. I needed a different sleep device that helped with sleep apnea. Dr. T is consistently learning and researching on behalf of his patients to make sure he is giving them the best treatment. The sleep doctors were shocked that a dentist knew about this and said that he was clearly doing his reading/studying. Let me address some of the negative comments I have seen here. I had negative experiences at first with my teeth. Dr. T was treating me but it was my teeth that were messed up and he was doing the work. His bedside manner could be a bit more soft. I was able to see a different side of him when he had to do a root canal in me (and the numbing medicine didn't work). I could feel the whole thing. He worked quickly, did his best and while it hurt a lot, he went as far as he could, patched me up and had me come back a couple of days later to finish the procedure. He didn't want me to be in pain for longer than absolutely necessary. that was a relief bc it was getting unbearable when he stopped. I came back a few days later and he finished the procedure. He is very accessible to his patients and is sometimes the one who calls them after hours on his personal cell...clearly he's willing to go above and beyond. He also saw that my teeth were crowding and needed to be corrected. So I did that with braces. It was actually a long haul to get where I needed to be. However, Dr. T and I had the same goal: fix stuff now so that I don't have to deal with it later when my teeth will have gone through more wear and tear. His humor is a bit dry and his confidence may be seen as cocky or condescending but he actually has a great sense of humor and is very concerned South his patients' well being now and thinks about their oral health in the future. Bottomline, if you want to be set up for success with your overall health, then you need to see a dentist who views it that way. Oral health is crucial and that is the view point Dr. T takes. Fixing my teeth was a financial investment but, more than anything, a time investment and now that I've gone through it, I'm so grateful that they are fixed...and that I'm getting decent sleep each night (which also impacts overall health) bc of Dr. T connecting the dots for me and the sleep doctors. read more

Really bad experience here. I went in for my yearly checkup and was told I had several cavities to be filled. I haven't had a cavity in many years, probably 15+ years, but they're the "experts" so I said fine. After having them filled on both sides of my mouth, I had really bad sensitivity to heat/cold on a couple of my teeth. This apparently didn't surprise anyone in this office that I had to make an appointment to come back and have them redone. Long story short, I had to get 'adjustments' done three times. Not once or twice - THREE times I had to go back to this dentist to fix his work. And drinking a cold glass of water is still painful! Whatever method they use to fill cavities is bogus - I would highly recommend to anyone that if you're diagnosed with a cavity from this place, get a second opinion #1 and #2 get it filled somewhere else! The only positive thing I can say about this place is the dental assistants/hygienists are nice. read more

I am so glad I read the reviews here before I went ahead with the work suggested by Dr. Tsaknis...I am over 40 and have not had a cavity since 4th grade nor have I had any dentist tell me I need to have my wisdom teeth removed. They have never bothered me. I went to City Dental and was told by Dr. Tsaknis I needed to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed. When I told him I was surprised to hear that since no other dentist ever told me that, he said that he cannot speak for his colleagues but it was his "job to educate me". I decided to hold off at that point. I went back for another cleaning, the hygienist commented that my teeth looked good and that I have no cavities. In walks Dr. Tsaknis moments later, and he says I have several cavities, need to have my ones from 4th grade refilled and again says that I need all of the wisdom teeth removed. He tells me they are pointing backwards, I cannot clean them, and that "cavities are jumping from them to my other teeth". When I said, "jumping?" , he said that keeping them was causing decay on other teeth. I come back to have two old fillings refilled, and again he mentions the wisdom teeth and other cavities so I make an appointment for two weeks later to just bite the bullet and get the work done. In the mean time, my two fillings are very sensitive the entire two weeks leading to the next appointment. That morning, I had a bad feeling about having him fill my "new" cavities and remove my wisdom teeth, so I looked here on Yelp and OH MY GOD. There are dozens of reviews with false cavities diagnoses, five+ return visits to correct fillings and unnecessary wisdom teeth removals. I panic, as I have my appointment in two hours. I decide to just have him "adjust" my fillings that he did two weeks prior, and tell the scheduling woman I will call back to reschedule the "new" cavities' filling and removal. Dr. Tsaknis adjusts the two fillings, asks about the other cavities and wisdom teeth AGAIN, and I just note I have to reschedule. I say nothing of his horrible reviews. I made an appointment with my prior dentist, whose practice I only left since I changed jobs across town, and GUESS WHAT??? I HAVE NO NEW CAVITIES AND DO NOT NEED MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVED. This dentist knew of Dr. Tsaknis ... and was not shocked. This is basically insurance fraud. I would have paid over $1,000 out of pocket for unnecessary work. I find it VERY SCARY that I almost let this man work on non-existent cavities and pull teeth from my mouth that did not need to be removed. Please, GO ANYWHERE ELSE and always listen to that voice in your head that say, wait a minute.... read more

This place is the worst. I read the negative yelp reviews but still went because my partner said he had had only good experiences. The dentist told me I needed multiple cavities, a new crown, and most likely a root canal. The whole bill, with insurance, would have cost me ~$1900. It felt off to me - I'd only ever had good experiences at dentists - so I searched out a second opinion. The new dentist said I needed just three cavities and with insurance, it cost me around $300. Plus, at Dental Bug, everyone kept asking me if I drank coffee, I think implying that my teeth were yellow (I got asked three times during my visit). I'm not sure if they were setting me up to sell me teeth whitening later on, but it made me feel bad about myself. The new dentist praised my oral hygiene and I walked out of his office feeling awesome. Moral of the story: don't go here and always get a second opinion when something feels off to you. read more

NEVER GO HERE. I had been going to this dentist practice for about two years, until Dr. Tsaknis messed up the surface a filling (that he told me was not critical and I could wait to get it done or just knock it out- which is what i ended up doing). When I went back for him to fix it, he got extremely frustrated (threw something on the side table) that he messed it up originally, and drilled down to close the nerve which caused throbbing pain. I called Dr. T the next morning, and he never returned my call. So I continued calling and ended up coming back into the office for an Xray and check up with Dr. Jefferson because the pain hadn't stopped. Well come to find out from the dental hygienist and Dr. J, I needed to get a root canal done because of this messed up filling. DentalBug went radio silent on me for a couple days even though I kept calling to find out what the next step should be. For 3 days, I did not hear a word. Then a Friday afternoon around 6pm, Dr. Tsaknis calls and leaves a message saying that he had just heard I was trying to call (this was after I called their office at least 5-6 times and left voicemails all week for someone to call back). When we talked the next morning, he told me that it wasn't his fault and that I needed to get a root canal which he should've suggested in the first place. He clearly forgot that he originally told me the cavity wasn't deep yet and I could've waited to get the filling for another 6 months... well $2000+ out of my own pocket and 3-4 months of pain, I finally am better. But i will never recommended this dental practice to anyone ever again. They were extremely sketchy, unprofessional, and rude. I recommend to anyone looking for a dentist in DC to look elsewhere because there are so many better places. read more

Sadly, I had a similar experience to Samantha T. here. If you have Delta Dental insurance beware! This DentalBug Office is a Premier provider, not a PPO provider so only 80% of your services will be covered. Other DentalBug Offices in DC are listed as PPO so I thought I was ok, but NOPE. I know you always have to verify coverage, and so I did when I made my appointment. The office staff confirmed that they take my insurance and that my cleaning was covered. They do take Delta but they did not clarify about the Premier vs. PPO or the 80% vs. 100% coverage. On top of it all, it's a real smack in the face to get a bill for $56 for a tooth cleaning (3 months later) when we spent over 6K at this office for my husband's tooth implant. This office will try and upsell you on everything too, "Are you interested in Invisalign?" and I have straight teeth. Do yourself a favor and find yourself a dentist elsewhere. read more
