OMG - I cannot recommend this place enough!! I've had trouble with my teeth my entire life and after not having insurance to go to the dentist for a few years - and knowing that I had a least a couple of problems - I was wrecked with anxiety both about what they would tell me and getting the work done. I honestly was on the verge of tears sitting in the chair for my first appointment. Dr. Troy Vagianelis is an anxiety whisperer! He was super calm but engaging. He asked me if there were specific things that raise my anxiety (yes) and he offered work arounds or modifications while still getting everything done. As others have said, the office is nice and clean - but doesn't have that sterile clinical feeling. My appointment started on time and I didn't feel rushed at all. The woman at the front desk was nice and very helpful. I had a question about my insurance and she could answer it! I enjoy a good cleaning, and the one I had here with Dr. Gutierrez was really top notch. If your cleaning starts slowly (mine did), don't worry -- this is a very tech-forward office that uses good tools to make your visit fast and effective. Since I was a new patient, they took a ton of photos to start, and then Dr. Gutierrez showed up to take a look. She ended up taking more photos because she wanted to show me exactly where I was missing in my brushing -- fantastic. A dentist can tell you plenty, but to have it showed to you on a big, clear monitor was great and has permanently changed how I brush. Once it was time for the cleaning, Dr. Gutierrez flew through thanks to the high tech tools and then grabbed the camera to take some more "after" photos to show me the difference. Throughout, she asked me about my habits and gave me very direct, clear advice. Again, I enjoy the dentist generally, and even still, this cleaning made me sit up and appreciate just how good it was. I never thought I'd write a review for a dental office, but here we are. The first thing is that there is never any wait. The staff are courteous and get us right in the door. Today I was in and out with 2 kids in record time. Also, my two year old loves Dr.V and the hygienist. They're great with kids and patient with parents. My 6yo also loves Dr. G, who was great with him and explained what was going on inside of his mouth in a way he could understand (and even get excited about). read more

Also, i made the appointment two-three weeks in advance, not 5 months. Thanks!!! Not sure about the capabilities of the dentist, but do not trust their online booking system. I scheduled an appointment and even received a confirmation email. Thank goodness I checked via a phone call because I was rudely told that my appointment isn't actually confirmed and I'm not on the schedule. None of that comment addresses the fact that I booked a routine cleaning and the doctor told me I HAD to book a second appointment for the first to be covered. Not once was it told to me (nor was it stated in your reply) that it was optional. My insurance coverage was specifically stated as a reason to book that second appointment. And you suggesting the dentist just knows these things because she runs her own business makes no sense when my own insurance company told me she was either wrong or lying. Your little doctor's office fees don't bother me. What bothers me is that the appointment wouldn't have existed had I not been misled about my coverage! read more

I came to Pahlavani Dental (PD) after moving to D.C. because it was a nearby clinic that my insurance covered. They also had stellar ratings on Yelp. Dr. Pahlavani herself, like many have mentioned, is personable, welcoming, and kind. Her office, on the other hand, didn't meet my expectations. I'll give a few examples below but in short it just didn't feel like a modern, polished, and professional clinic. For example, the receptionist was wearing a "squad goals" t-shirt, they didn't have some of the modern technology I'm familiar with, my cleaning felt rushed and not very thorough, the clinic itself was cramped and faced the street so passerbys could look in as your teeth were cleaned. While I'm a laid back, generally, I think it's fair to have certain higher standards for health care providers. A few examples: - The tech who cleaned my teeth was nice and friendly but it was by far the fastest clean/polish I have ever had. What made me nervous was that she didn't floss along each side of the gum line, which I've been told by previous techs/dentists is pretty essential for dental health. It made me concerned that patients who go to PD may not be instructed on how to properly floss their teeth and that techs aren't trained/experienced. - This is very odd... I arrived and the receptionist was pumping up a beach ball (why?!) and didn't stop to say hello. Then after I greeted her, she continued pumping even as we talked and seemed annoyed I was there. Struck me as very odd. - The office itself was a bit in disarray. The receptionist's desk messy, the dentist instructing staff on where to find cleaning equipment as she was examining my mouth, paint cracking and scratches on the wall. See pictures attached. - I called my home dentist to have my records and x-rays sent over before my visit, several weeks in advance. My home dentist said they had sent them over and reminded me I didn't need new x-rays because I had just gotten them on my last visit. When I visited PD, the receptionist said the images were blurry and that they needed to take new x-rays. Fine. But, oddly, when Dr. P was looking at my x-rays from home she commented that they were very clear. Might have been a simple miscommunication but I worry it was unnecessary radiation. read more

I saw Dr. Gutierrez last time I was there, and she's also terrific - I've been really happy with my care each time I've been to this office.

EDIT: See attachment for evidence of my appointment, which is apparently needed. When I saw Dr. G, she told me I had a cavity and a severe gum disease, which I found extremely suspicious because I am very diligent about my dental hygiene and have actually never had a cavity before. I got a second opinion from my previous dentist (who is a family member, and who I trust), and he informed me that my teeth and gums were perfectly healthy. If Dr. G wasn't trying to commit insurance fraud by giving me a completely unnecessary filling (which seems likely), then she's incompetent. Oh also, they took all of my mouth X-rays twice because they did it wrong the first time. I get that the girl doing it was probably new, but if you're going to be giving people X-rays and don't know what you're doing, you should probably be supervised. I strongly encourage prospective patients to look elsewhere. read more

I'm in the process of finding a new dentist so I called about 6 dentists to find out who takes my insurance; so I can compare how all of those first intro calls went and this office takes the cake for the worst experience! All the other offices were professional and polite, this one was not. First you have to listen to a recording when you call because no one answers during business hours. I had to call multiple times until I finally got their rude, unhelpful receptionist. I guess they don't want new business. Came here as a referral from lots of researching on Zocdoc. Dr. Pahlavani had a lot of great reviews and she did NOT disappoint. I hadn't seen a dentist in way too long and to say that this was one of my best dental experiences would be an understatement. Dr. Pahlavani was extremely thorough, attentive and kind. For my first visit, I came for a cleaning and she ended up being able to fit in me for extra work. That is not something you get often from a healthcare provider, often time being asked to come back. But Dr. Pahlavani made the time for me. When I returned for more work with a bit of an issue after the first session, she was able to address and fix it appropriately. She has EXCEPTIONAL bedside manners, super kind and easy to talk to and her work on my teeth was phenomenal. I am so excited I have found a dentist nearby that I trust and enjoy. Honestly I don't even know where to begin. Everything that could go wrong with this office, did in fact go wrong. Essentially, I came here because of the positive internet reviews. Mistake. I left with a headache and toothache. I experienced a painful cleaning and long wait time. The cleaning took 90 minutes due to some poor scheduling. I was with the dentist maybe 20 minutes but waited around the other 70. Thereafter, twice the receptionist was rude on the phone. Also when I asked for x rays, I had to call back again to get them because they were allegedly sent to the wrong email address. Hmm HIPAA? Additionally the layout of the space leaves a lot to be desired. During my wait time in the chair, I not only observed the other patient in his chair but saw his x rays and teeth on the screen projecting towards me. I'm not sure why I would want to see this nor should see this. I think they should try to put a curtain up for privacy if that's really how they plan to operate. Just about the only positive vibe was from the dentist, who was pleasant, but maybe not thorough due to my exceedingly long wait time. I don't think she explained what was found in my scans in a clear way. She seemed rushed due to the fact they were running behind schedule. I requested my x rays and changed dentists immediately. I've been going here for less than a year but I love it! First off Dr. Lee is amazing! She's friendly, very knowledgeable and gentle. Second off, their office it's easy to get to (walking distance to Shaw Metro stop/many buses drive by or around their office) and last but not least, their staff is very friendly and always willing to help. Covid note: they take your temperature prior to coming in, they have those divisions between the front desk and customers to protect everyone, and they provide special mouth wash before they get to work on your teeth! read more

My experience with this dentist was so poor that, for the first time in my life, I created a Yelp account to do my part in letting the world know to stay away from this egregious and ethically corrupt dental practice. It is very clear their priority is money -- at the expense of health. Forced me into excessive x-rays: First, their technician took two x-rays of my teeth, and the images did not upload on the screen. Then, when the x-rays started working, I noticed each x-ray was only of two teeth. I asked her how many x-rays they usually take, and she said SIXTEEN. I said, I am uncomfortable with that, as I've already had x-rays for other injuries this year and have a family history of brain tumors, so I am wary of radiation. However, after telling her why I DID NOT WANT THE X-RAYS done, she told me I had to. It is clear they prioritized taking my money over my choice. After I expressed my discomfort with the x-rays, they should have let me walk out. Attempted to coerce me into surgery: Then, I was asked when I wanted to schedule my extraction for my wisdom teeth, as if I did not have a choice in the matter. I declined to, since I am grown and have never been told by any other dentist I needed my wisdom teeth removed. I politely told them no thank you, and then received a lecture on why I need surgery now. Sloppy and rushed cleaning: Next, during the cleaning, water kept spilling down my neck and on my shirt, unlike any other dentist visit I have been too. They also missed two teeth while flossing. They also got fluoride all over my lips, which was uncomfortable and which has not happened to me before. The entire appointment, which ended up being a sub-par cleaning and an explicitly unwanted series of x-rays, was $400. read more

Their customer service was great but I would say she's only out for your money. My first initial appointment was because of a bad filling from a previous dentist. She fixed it with no problems. I ended up coming back for a cleaning and she notice that I had a few cavities but, there was one tooth in the back that was decaying. I was informed that the tooth could not be saved and that I would need a root canal. We spoke prices and the root canal it self was $200 and I would have to come back for a porcelain cap in two weeks pricing $400. Note I didn't have pain in the tooth. That was my last appointment with Pahlavani dental and I decided to get a second opinion. I ended up going to Dental Works and was informed that all I needed was a filling costing a lot less and saving my tooth. To sum it up always get a second opinion! read more

This is a very strange office. I scheduled an apt 2mths out for cleaning (a new pt with great insurance) and when I showed up today, during a snow storm, they casually said you are not on the schedule. I spelled the name, dob, and showed her my calendar that I scheduled it 2mths ago. She then said that the person who made the apt is no longer employed at the establishment. Casually, she said, can you come back next wknd? I informed her that I'll be on travel. She asked if I want to speak to the office Mgr whom she called and I asked about what? At that point she asked me to leave because they were not going to go back and forth. When I said, thank you, excellent customer service, as I prepared to leave, she came back to ask for my name while on the phone. This office is bad news. When they give you a referal to an endodontist, they do not ask where you want to go but to another weird office (friend) in DC. Do not go to this dentist unless you want to deal with 2+ years of recurring dental issues. I started seeing Dr. Pahlavani a few years ago and thought she was incredibly friendly and thorough. I wish I had looked at yelp reviews before I came in, because if I had I might have avoided the hell I'm currently going through. I'd seen the same dentist for 20 years before moving to DC and aside from a few minor cavities, never had any significant dental issues. During my first cleaning, Dr. Pahlavani said that an old filling had gotten worse and needed to be redone, but that the decay was so bad that I might need a root canal. I accepted this and let her redo the filling - I should mention here that I'd had zero pain or sensitivity on the tooth in question until AFTER the filling was redone. A few days later, suddenly in unbearable pain, I went back in and was told I needed a root canal. Dr. Pahlavani referred me to an endodontist and I went through an incredibly painful root canal process but was told that everything went well. When I went in to get a temporary crown it felt too tight but the dental assistant assured me it was supposed to feel that way at first. 3 days of swollen gums and pain later I went back in to have it looked at. Dr. Lee was in the office that day and identified that it was shaped incorrectly - as soon as she removed it I had instant relief. Then, to show the dental assistant her error, she forced it back on my tooth, which was (obviously) super painful. I get the concept of a teachable moment, but not at the expense of a patient's pain level. It's been two years since that dreadful experience, and a few months ago I started to feel sensitivity on the tooth I'd had the root canal done on. I went to a new dentist and endodontist and both independently said that the last root canal was done incorrectly, causing an infection and the possibility of a cracked tooth. I now have to go through the process of having my root canal redone and am on hefty antibiotics to prevent the infection from getting worse. Wrapping up this review, I showed my dental X-rays to another dentist and asked about the tooth that Dr. Pahlavani redid the filling on, and was told that it looked totally fine from the very beginning. Before I went through all of this, I referred a friend to Dr. Pahlavani and she (smartly) ran for the door when she was also told she had an old filling that needed to be redone and possibly needed a root canal. This whole experience has led to years of pain and thousands of dollars in dental expenses, which I've now realized were totally unnecessary. read more

Be ready for the most disorganized dental visit you've ever had. Everything is late, then rushed. The work is shoddy. And their billing practices are questionable -- they will try to get you to come back multiple times for something other dentists will just knock out in one visit. I've been going to Dr. Pahlavani for a year now and have only ever had an amazing experience. All of the women in the office are lovely and welcoming, and Dr. Pahlavani does an excellent job. I actually look forward to going to the dentist! During my recent visit, I was informed that the regular dental assistant was out sick, and in her place was a replacement who was just hired for the day. Without going into all of the details, I had a pretty miserable experience with him (even though Dr. Pahlavani herself had done a great job) and left feeling as though my teeth hadn't been cleaned. The replacement dental assistant was lethargic and very quickly polished my teeth, by no means doing a thorough job. As I left the appointment, feeling disappointed, I asked if I could fill out a feedback form. I did so, and nearly the second I got home I received a call from Dr. Pahlavani herself saying that she was aware that the replacement dental assistant was not performing well, to the point that she was concerned. She informed me that she asked him to leave shortly after I left the office. She also offered to schedule a time the following day that worked for me and she would personally clean my teeth again. She was incredibly understanding and flexible, and when I went in the following day, she did a wonderful job. My teeth felt great and I left feeling much better! Overall, I could not ask for a friendlier dentist, or someone with more expertise. I have recommended Dr. Pahlavani to multiple friends, and always have a pleasant time at her office. read more

Had been looking for a good dentist in the area for ages and finally came to Pahlavani after a recommendation and lots of research. I've had a ton dental challenges in the past (bad docs, bad recs, issues with pain management, etc.) so was nervous - but Dr. Pahlavani and her staff were incredible! There was absolutely zero judgement for the dental issues I came in with and they were very much positive and solution oriented. They even were able to squeeze me in to a packed schedule (thanks COVID) as a new patient. After having a bad experience with another dentist, I was kind of scared having my daughter go here. But when we got there, we were welcomed with opened arms and great hospitality. Everything was clean and new, and i didn't have any doubts that they would take care of her. They made my 5 year old feel comfortable and didn't rush through her exam like other dental chains would do. She seen Dr. Lee and she was very thoroughly and precise with her exam. Dr. Lee even showed me a hole in daughter's mouth that needed to be filled. They explained everything with me, in detail, and my daughter left extremely excited about her experience.
