First time at City Diner for breakfast and it did not disappoint. Sat at the counter and the aromas alone gave us excitement about our breakfast choices. Went here with a group of 5 the morning of the Richmond Marathon and it was such a great experience! We were so surprised to be seated so quickly even during a busy weekend. This is a tiny place with a parking lot next door - atypical for downtown. We were seated promptly and drink order taken. The service was very attentive. I had a grilled cheese with bacon that was good. My side was probably the best sweet potato fries I've ever had - perfectly cooked, not too salty. This is a quick stop in Virginia and I want to take "City Diner" to New York! Everything was perfect, well except for the Washington Commander decorations. They have a small parking lot that we took advantage of and made our way to the diner. It has a old school vibe to it and I hope they never change. Yellow is the theme and they have classic wooden booths around. They have plenty of condiments on the table as well. The staff are extremely friendly and have a good time here. They sat us and came over for service right away. After a quick wait the food came. I wasn't expecting so much; however, our waitress did warn us. Everything that we had was delicious, even the grits (strongly recommended). I was completely convinced this place, is the original diner in America. City Diner is my husband's favorite breakfast place/diner in the city. I really enjoy it but he goes even more than I do, with other friends. The staff is super friendly, and you get seated immediately, and served very quickly as well. The food is always terrific. My favorite breakfast is the corned beef hash, eggs, hashbrowns and biscuits. The hash is always homemade and so good. My husband's typical meal at City Diner is country fried steak and eggs and the friend he goes with a lot gets the french toast. Everything is always so great. We will go again and again! read more

Eh. The food is all right- the club was solid, the reubins a little anaemic, the pancakes saved from rubbery dryness by the blueberries and the massive bottle of fake maple syrup at the table. The waitress seemed more than a bit frazzled and had trouble with our drink order... probably because she couldn't hear it. The noise inside is honestly deafening. The music is too loud and everyone is yelling to compensate. I couldn't hear people sitting next to me and a request to turn the music down at least was refused. Busy busy dinner on Broad street in Richmond that actually has a parking lot so worries about street parking. Be prepared to wait unless you want to sit at the bar like we did you will most likely be seated almost immediately. We noticed they had very fast to go service as well. We ordered steak and eggs and a ham scramble. Steak was seasons with Montreal steak seasoning which is normally totally fine but it was totally covered and just a bit too salty. I have never been treated so badly. My wife and I arrived to the diner and let the hostess know that our daughter and granddaughter were on their way and would be there shortly and asked if we could get a table! She told us no! She said we have to wait until the entire party was there before she would seat us. Most of the table spaces were open, but we were told no. We wanted to sit and get some coffee and tea while we waited. I'm 70 and my wife is 65. They made us go stand by the cold door and said they would seat us when the rest of our party arrived and not before. I will never forget this place and I am telling everyone that this is not a friendly place. Because my wife wanted to sit at the table and wait the hostess got embarrassingly loud and told everyone in the restaurant that we were not going to be seated nor served and that we were not welcome to eat there, and that we needed to leave. What this really showed us and means is that that people of color are not welcome in this establishment. Please, stay away from this place. read more

We arrived at just the right time since we were able to get a table right away. Five minutes later and we would've had to wait. Still loud as hell. You'll still leave smelling like the kitchen. The waitresses will still call you darlin' and honey. Food still comes out super fast. It just isn't that great. The pancakes are rubbery. You need a knife to cut them, then still have to chew more than you should. The eggs are good. The home fries are too hard, and they aren't actually cooked WITH the onions and peppers. The chicken fried steak is good. This is the kind of place you go to when you're hungover, or your #1 choice is full. It'll do in a pinch. I don't hate it. First of all ... gross. The place is dirty. The ceiling vent directly above our table had some fuzzy mold thing growing on it. The food was not great. The tater tots and fries were rancid. They tasted like they were cooked in week old oil. And if that isn't bad enough the waitress was rude. She was unfriendly and we saw her 3 times, taking the order, bringing the food and slapping down a check. I guess you just pay at the cashier. The cashier was nice which is why I gave 2 stars. The cherry on top was that it was expensive. $40 for a breakfast burrito and a club sandwich with sodas. I know things have gone up and I'm okay with it if the experience is good but come on. When you see Richmond's finest, roll into the parking lot in thier cruisers, it will turn your head. Not an arrest, but there to eat breakfast. A good cup of hot coffee and an OK breakfast. I think the usual cook was getting over his hangover and the sub was there as a stand in. My over easy eggs, were more over than easy. My whole wheat toast was bland and tasteless. My family and I went to City Diner to celebrate my sisters high school graduation. It was one of only a few places open at the time. We were able to use the outdoor seating to sit together under a nice covering that shielded is from the sun. The staff practiced the correct guidelines by wearing gloves and faces shield while serving the food and drinks. We felt safe and happy to finally get out for a meal with the whole family.
