I can't believe that I haven't been to this place before now. City Donut is located in the plaza near Shrimp Basket. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted and served. I ordered a fruit loop and blueberry donut. Both were very good! I also bought a chocolate cream filled donut, but I can't take another bite LOL. They have milk and coffee available for purchase. Likes: Their cake donuts are a world above others. I specifically enjoyed the blueberry cake donut. My mother in law (who considers herself a cake donut expert) also enjoyed the chocolate peanut cake donut. The peanuts in the top are fresh and crunchy as opposed to the moist peanuts that are old and less desirable. Their dough based donuts are wonderfully light and airy. Most maple flavoured icings are disgustingly sweet, not this place! Their maple dough nut may be the best I have ever had. Dislikes: I felt like the pumpkin cake donut tasted like an instant apple cider drink packet. It was enjoyable but not great. While being better than your average donut establishment with a ton of tasty donuts that appeal to children, it doesn't have the ingenuity that other donut establishments posses. So good we hit it twice! First time there was a line but on heading out of town, they told us we had just missed the rush. All of the donuts we got were great, my husband and I both loved the chocolate covered and chocolate filled ones. MIL loved the key lime, SIL loved the long john. There's a little something for everyone. Top it off with top notch service with a smile!! Everyone was so friendly, even on the day when the line was long and people were indecisive. Especially both of the ladies names Savannah. I can only specifically call them by name bc they were the only names I caught but they were not the only ones. I knew I had to check this place out when I saw all the reviews. AND it was directly across the street from the condo we were staying at. We went twice during our vacation. Both times were pretty late at night so the selection was low, but I was actually impressed with the varieties that they still had left at that time of day. Both times, we got an assortment. The twix donut was surprisingly light and fluffy. I thought it was my favourite... until I tried the red velvet. I'm usually not a fan of red velvet, because it's usually just over hyped chocolate, but this one was delicious and simple. Just a simple cake donut with cream cheese frosting. We are from Butler County, Ohio. Google it...we have a donut trail of top local donut shops. We have nationally ranked donuts, so we have a high bar when it comes to our expectations. This place is awesome. Amazing customer service, amazing products, and the price is fair. You have to go early and I mean 15 minutes prior to open. I got their 5 minutes before open and they had already opened doors and the line was out the door. There's no way they don't sell out every day, but you can tell they can handle volume. When they open at 6:30am there is a line formed. It moves really fast but it is so worth it to get there and get lest pick before they run out of anything. There croissant is the best croissant I have ever had. It is glazed like a donut but still light and airy. We went through so many while we were there. Came in with family on our way to the Dolphin cruise to make quick breakfast. Everyone tells you to get here early because they sell out and they aren't wrong. We came in on Tuesday morning after 8 and they were already sold out on the bavarian creams so I settled for rasberry filled with frosted blueberry. One of the best moments was when my daughter requested the chocolate cake with whipped topping and mini oreo cookie. The server kindly told her sorry those are not for sale but only looks...her facial disappointment was priceless and along got them extra star. My wife got one of the cake's with chocolate icing and mini m&m's it was light and had nice crunch with the candies. One of the best things was i never tasted that "greasy" after-taste that some donut places leave in your mouth. There's a reason this place is one of the highest ranks places on the island. They have the good ol' standbys but they have different donuts too. Key Lime. Oreo. Peanut. Twix. And the coffee is just about some of the best. I'm sure there is a Starbucks around here somewhere but why you would bother with that when you can have this is beyond me.
