Just moved into the area, and was looking for a local optometrist that could help me with both glasses and contacts and was covered by my insurance, and I'm so glad I chose City Eyes I had a wonderful first experience here! The staff and doctors were super professional and friendly. Wearing glasses my whole life, I though I've already seen all the latest eye exam technology and methods, but I was blown away by the tech that City Eyes had. They had a machine that basically replaced the eye dilation drops, and another machine that replaces the "puff" machine in standard optometry offices. Both Dr Steinberg and Dr Rosie were so thorough, knowledgeable, and pleasant while administering my eye exams. Dr Steinberg even prescribed me a "new" contact lens to help with my eye dryness, something my previous doctors have not even brought up. My appointment was an absolutely perfect experience. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The doctors were attentive and thoughtful. I am so grateful i was able to get an appointment without waiting weeks. There was an abundance of free parking. My new contacts are less expensive and more effective than the ones i wore before. My worst experience was with Nataly, an employee at the establishment. Latina to Latina, she offered to speak to me in Spanish, which I agreed to. I let her know the purpose of the new glasses. I explained it to her, and she said it was possible. The day of delivery for the glasses arrived, and from then on, it became a nightmare, as the glasses hadn't been made according to the needs I explained to Nataly. I came to this place to get a prescription for new glasses and contacts. I have a monovision prescription. I asked the doctor to tweak it a bit because I felt that my contacts didn't work as well as before. He couldn't figure it out like he never worked with monovision before. He ended up asking me what prescription I had and prescribed me the same contacts. Their billing was confusing and they didn't provide the itemized bill. I felt that they rushed me through the explanation, and I ended up not knowing what I was paying for. A year later they did not honor their own prescription because the dates on the prescription and the chart supposedly were different. I called them and they were rude, including the doctor. Overall, a bad experience, and I am never coming back. Upd: they are threatening me with a law suit because I dare to write a bad review. Upd 2: They keep texting me, I had to block them. First, I had 3 visits because the doctor couldn't figure out my prescription during my first visit, after which btw he gave me a different prescription but it didn't work and then he prescribed same strength as the one I came with. Second, I had to order new boxes of lenses because I ran out completely but still looking for a good local doctor who understands monovision. And the prescription is not expired according to the date on it. But it doesn't matter, my review is honest. read more

My exam visit was Jan 16, 2021, my first visit and I regret ever coming here. It was an absolute nightmare and here's why... My initial impression was good. The young man I spoke to on the phone was kind and helpful. He gave me a quote for my first visit. The appointment was approximately 45 mins long and three 'medical professionals' were in the office assisting me. At the end of my appointment, the lady at the front desk attempted to charge me $200.00+, which was way over what they quoted me. They added a year's supply of contacts to my ledger. It was my first time ever trying on a new contact brand they recommended and I simply wanted to test them out before ordering. They also charged me in full $85.00 for a contact lens fitting, a fee they did not inform me about prior to my visit, and I also never signed any paperwork agreeing to this. I told the doctor: "I'm sure my health insurance covers all or part of that fee" and rather than calling to check my eligibility, they lied to my face and said they already checked. They were 100% sure that my insurance does not cover any part of my fitting and demanded that I pay $120.00 out the door. I was outnumbered and being pressured to pay my dues while being rushed out of the office because it was closing time. They failed to provide any documentation of the charges or even a printout of my balance. I called my insurance company shortly after my visit and discovered that my provider DOES in fact cover part of my contact lens fitting. I found out that other optometry places half the price for lens fitting. The next business day, I called City Eyes for a partial refund, and the front desk lady on the phone refused to cooperate with me, let alone speak to the manager. A month later, I tried to order contacts online using the prescription that Dr. Steinberg provided me during my visit and he DECLINED it. Unbelievable. After my husband posted a negative review after our appointment today vaguely sharing our experience Dr. Steinberg thought it to be the most professional thing to do to text my cell phone at 7:45 PM to give a his opinion and further try to belittle us by constructing his opinion of us and somehow someway we were the tipping scale on his decision to no longer take in "medi-cal" patients. They say first impressions are lasting impressions and in this case it couldn't be truer. I truly hope you guys take the time to view the screenshots I took from my texts and I hope this helps someone else. Message for the doctor : We are all one life event from being at a cross roads, one move away from losing people's respect or one failed bussiness away from ruin and at that point we must ask ourselves 'Have I been kind ? There are seasons in life and if we live on a high horse looking down at "certain" people we might be hit hard in a different season and I hope you don't feel then what you've given to other's. Unfortunately, the days I tried to reach him mid-afternoon, he was gone (I was told he leaves 3:30 - 4:30 depending on the day, some days earlier). He was condescending towards his staff and at no point did he acknowledged my family and I while we were there. I wouldn't recommend this business to anyone. I really like this place because I get the personal care and feel that they genuinely care about their patients. I used to go to Costco, but don't feel that I get the special care that I get here. Plus, both doctors here really know their craft and are very easy to talk to. When I'm at Costco, I feel like a number and feel rushed. I'm a little scared to write this review because I see that Dr. Steinberg responds personally and calls people liars but I would be remiss if I didn't just let people know I had a bad experience at this place. I brought my daughter in to get a new glasses prescription because our old eye place closed. I check over the phone ahead of time to see what was covered by insurance and I also separately checked with my insurance company. But when we got there it was not only high pressure sales on the glasses frames (the insurance covered $150 frames but they only showed my daughter frames that cost 400 and up. I literally had to argue to have them show her less expensive frames and threaten to just take the prescription and go to Costco), and then they tried to tack on an entire year's worth of the most expensive contacts. They also tried to charge for anti-glare coating and when I argued that I know insurance covers it they were extremely rude and said it didn't. Luckily I'm not afraid of a little confrontation and I continued to argue until, lo and behold, they suddenly discovered it was indeed covered. The doctor, Norm (if he is a doctor) was condescending. I would never ever take anyone in my family back there. We are now at another practice (the whole family) a few blocks away and very happy. read more

This was my first time here. Everyone here is very nice. They took a lot of time to help me try and choose a new pair of glasses. I also got an exam done and the women was very sweet. I didn't have to wait long, with an appointment. Though my insurance covers a portion of this cost for glasses, the prices were a little high on a lot of these options for glasses. I also felt they are very limited in the selections they offered; including sunglasses. They seemed to have more options for young adults or children. Though I found a pair I am happy with, it took over a hour trying to find something. Also, you don't always get your glasses too quickly. Need to be ordered and depending on the prescription, could take a few days. This place is smaller than most places I went too. Maybe that is why the selection is small. But when some people are limited to where they can go, I would suggest they have more options. It's located in a plaza. Though there is a lot of parking spots, I actually had a lot of trouble finding parking in the afternoon. Also, located right next to In & out so the traffic can be heavy getting in the plaza. read more

First of all if he tells you he is an attorney to try to intimidate you be aware because he is not an attorney. He charged my Ins Company while over charging me. There was an error made on my glasses in 2022 so I brought them back into their facility. He tried every which way without an apology to see if I was lying . They had to redo the exam all over again. By the way I purchase my frames with another vendor so we are only paying for eye exam and lenses. Over 2 years ago I was charged just for the lenses over $560.00 out of my owe pocket including what he was reimbursed by my Ins. Co. So in 2022 he had to redo the exam and charged me $296.00 for basically the same prescription from the previous two years. So I never really needed new lenses. I had two years before that he charged me almost double that amount. When I ask why did you charged me a large difference with basically the same lenses? They wouldn't/couldn't respond. I had two people with me as witnesses. I had to bring them with me to be witnesses on my behalf I picked up the 2nd pair of glasses while he held my first pair of glasses hostage. I got all kinds of stories and he had me sign a form saying he was not responsible for my glases. He had both pairs of my glasses I finally came in and took the $296.00 glasses and he held my other pair hostage he charged me almost double the amount. He tried to bully me. I had to file a police report and other reports regarding City Eyes to return my glasses both pairs were never adjusted for my face so currently I am wearing old glasses I got at Costco. read more

This is the worst experience I've ever had at an optometrist. Long story short: they did a bunch of [very expensive] tests without talking to me about what I was actually looking for or if I wanted any of these exams and I ended up paying almost $300 (WITH INSURANCE) for basically a pair of cheap GLASSES! (According to my insurance I overpaid $100 but with their muddled receipt it was difficult to figure out where the extra charge came from). At my old optometrist's I paid MAX $125 for a YEAR worth supply of special contacts, with all exams included. The worst part of the whole experience is that they just threw out numbers at me without explaining what they were charging for, or asking me if that's what I wanted and I HATE those kind of sales tactics. I wasn't born yesterday, don't treat me like a dumb consumer. And FYI, the "HD" contacts he tried to convince me were so great SUCK! Not only can I NOT see any better, but they actually hurt my eyes and I cannot wait to get new contacts as soon as possible. **In response to the comment below: we clearly have a different recollection of events, and the bill I have at home is higher. OF COURSE I'm not going to come back. (an actual licensed doctor) perform your eye exam? Our family went to City Eyes but we weren't examined by Craig Steinberg. I am also wondering why NORM STEINBERG (brother of a licensed doctor), whose bio states he attended optometry school, isn't on their website with a Doctor of Optometry title? I mean if I were an O.D., I think I would put it on my card, proudly display my license, and call myself "Doctor." Another funny thing -- I have VSP insurance with a fixed co-pay for an exam, lenses and frames. Interestingly, when it was time to pay, the bill was almost triple the co-pay. Now, I will say that when I brought up the discrepancy, they did immediately take out the charge for the "future" follow-up exam that was to occur 6 months later (??) that was neither requested, suggested, nor disclosed. read more

The absolute best experience at the eye doctor! Dr. Steinberg is kind, helpful and understanding. He is focused on what's best for each patient and their unique needs, and even takes time to help select the perfect frames. I recently lost a pair of glasses after three years and needed a new pair ASAP. City Eyes worked with me, and in less than 24 hours I had an eye exam and a brand new pair of glasses. I sent an urgent e-mail to them at 10:00pm, and by 1:00pm the day after I had a brand new pair of Coach frames and an updated prescription for my changing eyes. Furthermore, they have a great selection of both eye glasses and sunglasses. Parking is convenient and it's right off the 101 on Van Nuys Blvd. City Eyes is run by a group of kind, honest people who definitely go the extra mile for patient satisfaction. I have been going to City Eyes for years. They are so wonderful! I first found them when I was looking for an optometrist who took my insurance. Most of the other places will require you to pay in full upfront and then bill back your insurance. City eyes does not do this and it makes my life so easy. They looked up my specific insurance, found out the discount I received, and applied it immediately. I only had to pay the portion that I owed. Next, the staff is really great. Both Dr. Steinberg and his brother are so easy to talk to, down-to-earth, and knowledgeable about all things eyes related. It makes for a very laid-back feel, which is a nice change from the large, informal doctors' offices I was used to. Also, one brother handles general eye health while the other focuses on contact lenses - which means I can knock out both appointments back to back. I used to have to schedule those appointments on separate days because, even though both specialists were in the same office at my previous optometrist, I could never get the appointments booked together. At City Eyes, I am in and out, both appointments done, in 45 minutes or less. Lastly, but definitely not least, they are open on Saturdays. I often have an issue making doctors appointments because I work the same hours those offices are open. Having the ability to come in, get my eyes checked, pick up lenses, or ask any questions on a Saturday is a benefit that I just can't put a price tag on. They do this to make life easier for their customers and I greatly appreciate it. I love Dr. Steinberg and his staff! I have been going here since I moved to LA 6 years ago. They have a ton of personality and schedule appointments so that I never have to wait. The waiting area has a nice aesthetic and they have tons of cool glasses to choose from. At Dr. Steinberg's suggestion, I changed my contact lenses brand a couple of years ago and had trouble with a pair of the new ones tearing and they gave me a free pair to help with the transition. It turns out that the contacts were better suited to allow oxygen into the corneas and I found them much better after the adjustment phase. I recently decided to have LASIK surgery and Dr. Steinberg assisted me with selecting the surgeon and the pre and post op care. The surgery was a success. I am especially happy with, and highly recommend, my doctor Marianna Mkrtchyan, O.D. She was very knowledgeable which should be expected from your eye doctor. But it was more than that with her ... You could tell that she genuinely loves what she does in the way that she talks about and explains the eye. On top of that, she was honest; which is hard to find in the medical field these days. She could have easily convinced me that I should buy glasses with a mild prescription to see further distances slightly sharper ... and I would have. However, she let me weigh out the economical worthiness based on the facts; and I appreciate that very much. As I am moving to Sherman Oaks in the near future I needed to find an optician that was close by to our new house and accepted by my health insurance. I looked on my insurance company's website and City Eyes was named as a provider. My prescription had expired so I needed an eye test and thought I might as well get a new pair of glasses as my current pair, that I rarely used, had an old prescription. I also was running seriously low on contact lenses after being on vacation in Europe over Xmas. I looked on Yelp and didn't see a review but thought I would go with them anyway. Big mistake. I have lived in the US over 7 years and I have never had such frankly rude and deceitful service. I scheduled my eye test for Jan 15th. Whilst I was there I ordered new contact lenses which I was told would be ready for collection the following week. They gave me 10 days worth of contact lenses to tide me over until my order arrived. All in all I spent about $500. So I waited for someone to contact me the following week to let me know when the contacts arrived. I heard nothing. I called them the following Friday and was told the contacts were on back order and I would have to come in and get some more samples. If I lived nearby obviously I wouldn't mind but I live in West Hollywood and work in Seal Beach so it's pretty inconvenient to have to go over there. I went over anyway and got some samples, he would only give me 5 days as the contact lenses were due to come in sometime the following week. That would do me to last to the following Sunday, 2 weeks after the original test. So I waited again the following week for a phone call to let me know they were in. Nothing. I called them on Saturday afternoon to see if they had them in stock and despite their website saying they were open till 3pm there was no answer. I had to leave a voicemail and wear some last remaining old prescription contacts on that Sunday so I could use the new prescription at work on Monday. Here's where the fun begins. I get a irate voicemail on Monday morning from 'Norm' telling me he left me a voicemail message the previous week. I never received a voicemail. Now as far as I know I'm not having any issues with my voicemail, AT&T does suck so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. He said the contacts were due to arrive after 3pm that afternoon or tomorrow. I asked him to give me a call later that afternoon and let me know if they had arrived as my wife could drive over from West Hollywood to pick them up as I am 40 miles away in Seal Beach at work. At the end of the conversation I wanted to double check the number he had for me but he was 'too busy with other customers'. So 3pm came and went. I didn't hear anything. My wife arrived at the opticians to pick up the glasses and see if the contacts had arrived. The chap behind the desk couldn't find the glasses so had to speak to 'Norm' who was in a consultation room. Norm was most put out by this and said he had been waiting for me to call him back. That's not what I had asked him to do, I asked him to call me. He then was a total arsehole to my wife in front of waiting customers bascially calling me a liar saying I hadn't got the voicemail message and almost refusing to give her the glasses as 'they would be flopping all over my head'. She asked for more contact lenses as I had run out, he asked her 'How do I know you're going to see him?'. Er, we're married. He then said 'I thought he lived in Seal Beach'. Here is the kind of idiocy we're dealing with. My wife calls me up telling me what happened and said she never wanted me to go in there again, something I 100% agreed with of course. I then called Norm at City Eyes saying I wanted to cancel the contact lens order as I never want to set foot in that store again. He said for him to refund me on my AMEX I would have to come in and get the AMEX card swiped. This puts me in an awkward situation as I am miles away, badly need the lenses, have no way of getting to their store before closing on a week day and, of course, have no intention of ever going in there again anyway. He also said my wife went into the store and 'demanded that he saw her', she did nothing of the sort. Mid conversation he put the phone down on me. I called AMEX and told them what happened, they said they would get the refund for the contact lenses ($125 which was waaaaay overpriced but I let slide as it was my first time going there). I emailed City Eyes cancelling the order. Norm then emailed me back asking for my AMEX number so he could refund me. Yet again more lies, I didn't need to go into the store to get my card swiped at all. I refuse to even reply and will let AMEX deal with it. The same contacts were $90 with expedited shipping to my office on 1800 Contacts by the way (not that I cared too much about the cost, all I wanted was the contacts). Sadly I didn't even make it to the office. I spoke to a lady who was very pleasant and got all my info and I then called back just to make sure my insurance would cover everything and the owner Norman Steinburg was very very rude and he hung up on me. I would never recommend them to anyone. I couldn't believe how poor his phone etiquette was. Some people should just stay in their element, be the doctor not the receptionist. I would have picked zero stars if I could read more
