If you're staying in/around Breckenridge, City Liquors is pretty much the only game in town when it comes to good beer/liquor selection at decent prices. Had it not been for the creepers working here staring me up and down like I was a second rate citizen, I'd have probably rated them higher. My friend and I came here and picked out a 750ml Smirnoff for $14 and a 750ml flavored Bacardi rum for $16, but when it came time to pay, not only did they make me remove my ID from my wallet, but they damn near snapped it in half while "inspecting" it. From experience checking IDs while bartending, there are plenty of state IDs that look like the library cards my high school gave out like ten years ago. That being said, I'm 29 with an enhanced NYS ID....not only does the thing have an RF chip and a land/cruise passport baked into it, but my damn ID has a friggin' hologram running horizontally across it. That didn't stop this nut job from checking it for a good 20 seconds before completing the transaction. I sarcastically asked him if it was the first time he's seen this kind of NYS ID, and he snapped back that he's seen plenty of them. He practically folded the thing in half to "ensure its authenticity" ...had it snapped regardless, I'd have a tough time explaining that to TSA and boarding my flight out of Colorado....jeez! For what they do - selling liquor and beer - they do it well. Customer service is literally appalling. I went in with my boyfriend to buy 4 cases of wine for a dinner event, so a pretty large order. When I go up to pay, they ask for my boyfriends ID too, completely normal. He said he forgot his wallet in the car so he runs out to get it, I apologize and say he'll just be a second. Then the guy behind the cash wrap says don't even bother. Why don't you go try a gas station and not bring your boyfriend. Seriously? So rude and so uncalled for. Staff was extremely rude and unhelpful. When I checked out, the cashier tried to confiscate my Oklahoma id because, "your id is a really bad fake." After offering to call the police, he had another look at it for about 10 minutes under the counter. Zero apologies other than, "I'm just doing my job." He continued to act hostile as if I was inconveniencing him. They also forgot to give me my receipt. When I called the store asking for the total over the phone, the same employee said "No way I'm giving you your receipt over the phone." Had to call back two more times. We stopped in a couple times while in Breckenridge for a family vacation. The beer selection was very well stocked with a lot of craft choices and included bombers of nicer stuff as well. The wine selection was broad and didn't really seem to be intuitively organized. As for my staff interaction, I talked with the cashier briefly about the brewery of the beer that I picked up. For a tourist/resort town I felt like the prices were what I expected. I'll be happy to return again. read more

I'm honestly surprised at some of the reviews. I've been going here for some time now and the staff has always been friendly to me. The selection is pretty good and the prices are the best in the breck area. I mostly go for the low prices on whiskey, but the beer selection is pretty good as well as the wine selection. The general outlook of the staff is overwhelmed. It appears that the store has outgrown the location. A captive audience concept, and a lack of staff has left the obviously capable employees almost bound and gagged. The lack of customer service and attention should be addressed. The clerk at this store treated us more rudely than any clerk has ever treated us anywhere at anytime. He was surly from the moment my wife came to the register to buy two bottles of wine. After I went to get the car and pick her up at the curb, he came running out to tell us if we ever parked in front of the store again he would never sell wine to us again. First of all, I didn't park. I only stopped long enough for her to get in the car. Secondly, it is not his place to yell at customers outside of the store. Cashier wouldn't accept and attempted to confiscate my legitimate NJ drivers license (I'm 25) and told me to "get out of his store". can't speak to the staff's demeanor, all I know is I paid a ton more at a local Frisco liquor store. Walked into City Liquors to see if I had gotten ripped off or if prices were just higher in Colorado.. Turns out City Liquors was very reasonably priced based on my experiences in NC as well as compared to the Frisco place. So I give them 5 stars for being almost a monopoly in Breck but still having decent prices. read more

High Prices & Horrible Service.

It looks as one reviewer works for Yelp. Apparently this makes him high and mighty. I see from his bar tending days that it was a DEAD bar. In a resort community there are far more transient young people than any college town. If you bring your NYS attitude into a store like this, expect a defensive stance. I guess he isn't aware that accepting a fake ID is a $1K fine to the employee, not the store. He should be flattered and curious, not offended that his ID needs to be checked. I would think he was being a sketchy sort and thus got this treatment. Poke a beehive, get the bees. This store does not deserve his rating. As indicated very good prices and selection. Staff might need some work, but if they card like nazi's... good on em. Saves the store a 35k fine and a post in various industry mags. Be objective! Beer selection is over the top. Super convenient next to the market. And I do agree the prices are good for a mom and pop, opposed to a big box where size matters. read more
