We opted to wait in the lobby on the benches they provide. While waiting we noted that they have indoor seating, outdoor starting in a screened in porch, and bar seating which is first come first serve. After a short wait, the hostess took us to our table, a two-top covered with butcher block paper. We met our server who was polite and promised us some samples of shrimp (that we never got - but other tables did). Our server did a great job answering questions we had about the menu and even provided some helpful suggestions. Please note, the tables a located close together, so if the table beside you has a loud talker, you can feel like part of their convo. We opted for 2 shrimp dinners (16 shrimp with 2 sides and choice of bread or hush puppies - get the hush puppies). I opted to have my shrimp served fried and broiled with cocktail sauce. For my sides, I ordered the garlic potatoes (roasted potatoes with their garlic butter - like a shrimp boil) and fried okra with a side of ranch. My wife opted for the shrimp dinner with cole slaw (their slaw is closer to a vinegar base with a sweet taste) and the garlic potatoes. We waited a little longer than we expected for our food and we noted that tables that were seated after us got their food before we did. Not sure if it is bc of what we ordered or bc our service was slow When we got out our food, it was well prepared and tasted great. Also, their portion sizes are generous and filing. I was expecting a grilled chicken breast (my mistake for assuming) but it was 4 pieces of what appeared to be smoked chicken on the bone. We had a great time strolling through the market, which seemed to have something new and delicious around every corner. The business has a small parking lot it shares with other businesses, there is also a small gravel lot beside it that you can park at. If you go at a busy time, parking can be a chore. Upon arrival, the business was busy with both inside and outside seating filled but we were seated immediately at a table with both bench and chair seating that shared the bench with other tables. There is also bar seating and you can sit at a high top that borders the brew stations. It took a few minutes for us to meet our server who took our drink orders. Soda for her and non-alcoholic IPA for me. It took our server a while to bring our drinks and she forgot my IPA so she had to go find it. Once we had our beverages, we ordered our food. We started with the bacon wrapped blue cheese dates - the dates are served on tooth picks and looked great but the blue cheese overpowered the flavor of everything else. My wife ordered the special of the day (not on everyday menu) which was shrimp tacos with a black bean pineapple salsa and house made chips and fries. I opted for the house burger with cheddar cooked medium and chips and fries. It took a long time for our food to come out and after observing our server chatting it with a table of her friends who were behind us, I am pretty sure she may have forgot to order it in a timely manner. When our food came it was auctioned off to us by another team member (no server to be found). My wife's tacos were overstuffed and fell apart. I tried one and the fried shrimp tasted really fishy to me, not like fried shrimp is supposed to taste. My burger was okay but nothing special. As others have mentioned, all these Pier Rd shops are touristy. I didn't spend long in any of them…read morebecause I have no need for extra stuff around my house. But I am always on the lookout for food staples I can take home for myself, and friends. The origin of the preserves here wasn't explained by the staff, nor any signs I saw (maybe on the website?), but it appears to be the kind of thing that local farm markets do near where I live, which is some local plant makes the preserves with local produce, and then the private stores get to slap their name on it. But I'm guessing/hoping it's still local to GA, and that was all I was after. I went for the peach-Vidalia jam, and some key lime hot sauce, figuring they'd be locally grown enough. I learned from the associate there that all Vidalia onions MUST be grown in Vidalia, GA in order to be called Vidalia onions. Despite working at a produce store in high school, I never knew that. I honestly thought the Vidalia branding was just the strain/type of onion, which could theoretically be grown anywhere. But no, like Rob Lowe informed us in Wayne's World (champagne must come from the Champagne region in France, otherwise it's just a sparkling wine), Vidalias must come from a specific region in Vidalia, GA in order to be REAL Vidalia onions. Learn something new every day! I also liked the gurgle pot fish pitchers they sold. Very colorful and festive. I was not told the origin of these pitchers, but when I got home, I saw a lot on ebay that were made in Bermuda, and apparently other Google searches claim that distinctive pitcher hails from Bermuda. Anyway, they have some neat stuff here, I hear samples are always available when we're not in the middle of a pandemic, so yum! And another useful tip: if you have a hankering for ice cream, my best advice is not to stop at the obvious Sweets Shoppe (with two Ps and an E) there on Pier Rd, but to head into the Commissary and grab novelty ice creams out of the freezer chest. They're $2 each, but compared to $4/scoop for grocery store quality at the Sweets Shoppe, I definitely got a better value on the Commissary's offerings for my ice-cream-aholic toddler. Like all of the shops on Pier Rd, the Commissary is also a historic building. Historically, it was the general store for workers on Jekyll, and I take that to mean servants who staffed the hotel and villas, back in the Gilded Age. Hopefully, they didn't get bilked as many a company store was known to do in that era. While all this info was available on the internet, and there are a few didactic panels throughout the Historic District, it would be more helpful if they had some kind of panel at every building, because really, every building has a story. If you take a tour from the Mosaic Museum, much more is probably explained, and I get it if they want to make money on that, to support the organization. But that said, I recommend scanning the website before heading to this area, so you have an idea what you're visiting.
