Stood there for 30 minutes waiting for my keys to get duplicated to receive attitude by one of the employees about my keys being done. The gentleman made me fill out a form with my contact information and told me to wait until I am called upon. So I patiently waited. And was never called. I later followed up with the same employee just to check in and got talked to like I was a problem, rather than a customer. Generally speaking, the people are very friendly and helpful at this location. Times are hard, finding good workings is difficult and I understand good workers can feel overworked in an understaffed local shop. However, whoever was taking care of key counter was just so unpleasant for no reason. To receive attitude when I was patiently waiting and just wanted an update? Perhaps this is why people opt to go to other places. Support Salz down the street if you need keys duplicated. It's a shame they are closed on Sundays. read more

Francisco at City Mill was a huge help! I was going through a very difficult car stereo installation where it seemed nothing fit right, and I needed some screws. I go cross eyed whenever I'm in one of these screw aisles. ‍ I always ask for help. Some folks are more helpful than others. My man Francisco spent at least 10 minutes with me! As I said, the stereo install wasn't going well. The screw size that was supposed to go in my deck wasn't fitting. Francisco had to get creative! And he did! He kept saying things like "this isn't the exact screw, but it should work." Making sure I would be ok with the screws he selected. I told him I didn't care and "whatever works man!" Screws. Such small things that are so important! Anyway, I haven't yelped in a minute but I was really pleased with the service rendered by Mr. Francisco and I want it recognized! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. I would not recommended coming to the Kaimuki City Mill. I would rather drive to Lowes and Home Depot. Ms. Nalisha the cashier was rude, unhelpful and did not care about providing the "excellent" customer service City Mill is supposed to be known for. It seems like City Mill's customer service has gone down drastically. I purchased an Iris 5-drawer storage chest at the Mililani store. The dresser damaged and had I took it to the Kaimuki store to exchange since i live in town. The cashier Ms. Nalisha who was doing the exchange was rude and unhelpful. She told me to grab a replacement but did not tell me where it was located in the store. I asked her where it was and she just said "oh its over there somewhere" which was not helpful. I walked the entire decore section and could not find it. She did not bother to call for help or make any attempt to get help from a sales associate. I visited City Mill twice today: first was to buy screen door rollers and the second was to return them. First visit: I wanted to fix my screen door so I purchased three different screen door rollers because I didn't know which one I needed. Floor staff was helpful. Second visit: Later on I was able to get the screen door to work smoothly again without any of the rollers, so I came back hours later to return all of them. Unfortunately, the cashier who dealt with my return was rude to me; she seemed to be irritated for some reason and was unfriendly. She first asked me if I was going to shop and exchange, so I tried to explain why I needed to return the rollers because everything worked out in the end, and I even apologized in the beginning. She then cut me off and told me something like "you didn't need to tell me all of that." She spoke to me the whole time as if she hated me or hated the fact that I was returning some items. We are so happy to have this GEM of a local hardware store nearby in Kaimuki (by Chaminade U.) and have little need to go to the 'big box stores' in Iwilei. They have virtually everything you need for your home and garden and even have a station for refilling propane tanks using your bottles!! Friendly staff that have been there for years (sign of a good company) that will always take the time to help you find what you need. Parking is great and you can always preorder and have purchases delivered to your car. They also will replace screens on custom windows and cut lumber and plywood (so you don't have to at home). I went to go and attempt to buy a sander, I had the sander in my hand and walked over the the next isle to see what sand paper would fit. Once I got over there this employee named Donovan snatched it out of my hands and said I quote" You can't just f***ing take this sander off shelve" I was baffled for a bit so I tried to explain myself and he was being sarcastic and smug and said I quote " if you knew the customers I had to f***ing deal with everyday. I don't know what happened but the last several times that I've been in this City Mill, the service has been amazing. One time I was looking for a glue that would hold a metal shelf to a concrete wall. I flagged down an employee and he spent time asking me exactly what I needed and recommended the perfect glue. Another time I brought back a fan that I bought six months ago because it had stopped working. They plugged it in, it didn't work and just handed me a new one with no questions asked. I didn't even have to show the receipt. Last time, I took in a sample screw because I needed 6 more to fix some outdoor lamps. The employee guided me and got the exact screws that I needed. Lousy customer service. Lousy. A year ago, there were friendlier, helpful people working there, now, only sour, unhappy looking employees who treat their customers like we are imposing on them. I went on 7/24/23 at 1:55 pm. There was a man standing behind the keys counter who I asked, "Do you carry butane?" I received a rough "It's with the cashiers," so I waited in line. I got called to the cashier and asked for Butane, only to be told it is with the Keys guy. I went back to the key guy, who said "we only have this" which was what I did need, but when I told him the lighter I was using it on, he told me to go back to the cashier. I gave up. Thank heaven for Ace Hardware, who knew what I needed in less than one sentence and promptly grabbed it for me. City Mill....whatever you did to your employees, fix it. You will lose business. I've always wondered why people shop at city mill but one day out of the blue decided to see if they had any nice furniture. I was in luck as I found a really nice wooden dresser for priced not bad, $399. I am usually pretty handy and can piece anything together but boy was I wrong. I gave an extra star because even though the cashiering staff needs work, the ones that helped me load the dresser into my car and out of my car was amazing. Checking out was a different story. The cashier in trainee really shouldn't be cashiering at all. She didn't know how to ring up the dresser. Oh wells, whatever, she was a trainee so I gave her a chance. For the purchase it took over 15 minutes to figure out how to ring up the dresser. Ok I thought I wouldn't have to deal with them again. I thought it would easy peasy to get it assembled at home, but was I wrong? Yesterday I spent the whole day putting it together. Some of the parts were not labeled. By the time i had got the whole dresser finished I tried putting in the drawers. There were large gaps in between and the drawers wouldn't close all the way. I called city mill to see if they would take it back and they said ok. It wouldn't all fit into my car so I needed a second car. I grabbed a couple of the drawers from my car, loaded it into a wagon and went inside to ask for help. Rather than returning it right away the dumb salesperson was like u need the whole drawer. I was like well I do need help getting it out of my car. I can't carry a whole dresser by myself. One employee to clock off heard me and offered to help since I was just standing there waiting for someone and no one came for over 5 minutes. He called one of his coworkers to help unload the car. When I bought the dresser some knicks and scratches were already there so I asked if I could return it for a new one and have it assembled. For $65 I knew it was worth it. Well the same cashier in training didn't know how to return or how to process the assembly fee. It's pretty bad when she needs to ask three other employees and they don't know how to help until the supervisor comes out. That's like 20 minutes at city mill for a simple return. And to top it off every employee gives u a different time frame for assembled furniture. From 5-7 days to 2 weeks, to 10 business days. She didn't know how much to charge and I was like um it's in the brochure about assembling furniture, um, duh! I told the supervisor what I wanted to do and he said he would take care of it. He even reprinted the receipt and said he would take care of the damaged drawer. Well this am I got a call and they told me my dresser was ready. Seriously so soon. She told me the drawers were fixed! What?! I felt like a broken tape recorder. I was supposed to get a new dresser since the other one was returned as damaged. She returned the damage one so I could get a new one assembled. She apologized and said the girl hadn't told her I bought a new dresser. She said she would call when it is finished. I surely hope I don't get the used dresser. I know what the old one looks like. I think once I pick up my drawers, this will be my last time I'm ever going to city mill. Although I love to support local this experience was left me with a reason to patronize Lowe's or Home Depot instead. read more

My recent visit to City Mill, I noticed this store received many awards, -Best Places to Work -Best of Honolulu Magazine 2015 -Best of Hawaii Home Remodeling 2016 -First Place, Hawaii's Best of the Best by Star Advertiser from 2010-2015 What an achievement for a local business who has been around since 1899 and founded by the late Chung Kun Ai. My mother LOVES to Garden, its her passion and her only hobby that makes her super happy. When she asked me to take her to City Mill or other retail stores that has her gardening supplies. I don't mind at all. This is her only request and I know her clues when she wants to go. After taking her to the other retail stores, I really noticed that the prices are low here at City Mill. The soil and fertilizers, I noticed the price difference. It is cheaper except for the plants. Next time you need soil or fertilizer, make a stop here for the extra savings. The CONs of this City Mill location: -Having to wait for help or not enough help, note: if you need help outside of store, ( this is where you will find your gardening needs) you have to find assistant in the store. My poor mother waited outside for the longest time for someone to help her. -The parking lot, I don't like the odd size of this lot, some parking are smaller than other stalls. & the parking lot do get busy at times. -Having to make a left turn in to City Mill, if you are on the other side of the street making a left turn, its going to be FUN yielding, to turn in. -Not enough cashiers and the extra long wait to be next in line City Mill is your stop for home improvements projects, repairs, or maintenance. Besides garden, they have everything from lumber, housewares, plumbing, furniture, storage, even beverages and snacks!! Check the weekly ads for sales and even more savings!! They are not the biggest in town, nor do they have the best prices. But I love to shop at City Mill, for the following reasons: 1) Locally owned: The business was founded in 1988 by the current owners' grandfather (Chun Kun Ai) and ownership has been passed down two more generations since then. 2) Customer service: unlike the big box stores, I can easily find someone to help me find a specific item that I'm looking for, and they actually walk me to the item. 3) Selection: they have a wide selection of traditional home improvement stuff like plumbing, electrical, paint, flooring, tools, etc. They also have a lot of simple home decor, furniture, and my all time favorite - organization and storage paraphernalia. 4) Locations: there are 8 locations throughout the island, all located in areas that are easily accessible and convenient. This particular location (kaimuki) is the smallest of the 8, but very convenient for the Kaimuki and UH folks. I could get better prices at Home Depot and Lowe's, but getting to Iwilei is a nightmare because of the traffic, and navigating through those looooong aisles takes too long. The history of City Mill started when Chung Kun Ai started a lumber importing and rice milling business in Chinatown, Honolulu. In 1950, he opened the present City Mill store on Nimitz Highway. The building was dedicated to James I. Dowsett, his mentor, friend and benefactor. The first branch store opened in Kaneohe in 1960. The second opened in 1967 in Waipahu and 1975, the third branch opened in Waimalu Shopping Center (Pearl City). The fourth store opened in early 1984 in Kaimuki. Then in 1993, two stores opened in Hawaii Kai and Mililani Town Center. And finally the eighth store opened in 1999 in Waianae. Hubby loves coming here to get some things. Plus he loves spring local business. It's a great store, just don't care much for the parking at this location. If you need help, it's easier to walk to the cashiers, but then there's times when you'll be surprised to find someone around the corner. I love the way they promote the Hurricane season. It's time to update my review, as I have been back to City Mill several times recently to fix various thing around the house........ A few months back I did a repair on a few window screens, as well as changing some water lines that feed into our washing machine. When I was trying to disconnect the hot water line to the water faucet on our basin, I noticed the water line was rusted out & frozen to the hot water faucet. I ended up going to City Mill to buy a replacement part, as I had to fix the hot water faucet on our outside basin. Today, I was back at City Mill again as I was fixing a broken water faucet that one of our water hoses was connected to. I guess the the faucet assembly must have wore out, causing the valve not to shut off the water. I put on my plummer's uniform.....you know, the kind of pants where when you bend over, the crack of my ass shows.......just so I can hear someone say - "PLUMMA IN DA HOUSE!" Buwahahahaha! Headed over to City Mill & went to the plumming department to look for a replacement part, As I was looking around, a nice gentleman (Steve L.) came up to me and asked if I needed some help. I had already found my replacement faucet part, but asked him to verify if I had the correct faucet part, which he confirmed to me that I had selected the correct part. From there, I decided to asked him about a "1/4 turn faucet" as one of my friends mentioned to me that a "1/4 turn faucet" assembly would last longer. The City Mill clerk (Steve L.) was very helpful in showing me what a 1/4 turn faucet looked like, & how it worked. He explained the advantages of having the "1/4 turn faucet" vs. the "standard faucet". Although the "1/4 turn faucet" costed a bit more, I decided to buy the more expensive faucet as I don't want to be replacing the same part again real soon. The customer service I received from Steve L. was outstanding today, this is the very reason I like to come to City Mill. I do know Lowes & Home Depot would probably be cheaper, but I come to City Mill because they usually have better service, as well as knowledgeable clerks on the sales floor. City Mill has the worst website which is hard to navigate and understand. I was online looking at a Little Giant King Kombo 8ft ladder they had advertised as clearance for $41.95. This ladder goes for $160 to $200 dollars normally. I went to order 2 ladders online and when I went to check out it said to enter my zip code to make sure it is in stock. Then a web page appeared saying there is no ladders in stock for pickup at store in all the stores on Oahu. What a farce their website is. It is like baiting you to come into the store if you only saw the ad and then wanting to go into the store to buy it. It is a good thing I tried to purchase the non existing ladders so that I didn't waste my time going to City Mill which was falsely advertising their products. This is not the 1st time and I usually do not complain, but this is the third time that this has happened. Lucky for us the is a Ace hardware that is more honest in their advertising practices a few miles away unlike City Mill's deceptive advertising practices. Don't take my word, type in 319145 in their website search box and see where it says, "available for store pickup, and additional quantities in store." Then try to order and a web page pops up showing there is none available at any of the City Mills on the Island of Oahu. Today is 12/18/2023. I always shop here when I have projects for the house. They carry parts that the big box stores don't carry and usually have the parts for older island homes. I have been able to buy glass for the jalousie windows and they will cut the piece if too long. The staff is top notch and will give you advice if you ask. Worst customer service. Went first to the City Mill in Iwilei. They didn't have the dresser we wanted but was told that Kaimuki had it. When we got there we asked an older employee to help us. He reluctantly said "ok. Wait". He then got an older female employee to help. She asked if we had come from the other location. When we told her yes she said that she had tried to call back Maria (the lady that was helping us in Iwilei) but she had already left, so "I don't know". We asked if they had the dresser in stock and she said yes. So no idea what the point of her story was. She went to the back to get the dresser (but not before stopping in the paint section to take a short 2-3 minute break to drink some water first). When she came back with the box ok a flatbed cart she dropped it off and said "Good Luck. Have Fun. Its Heavy." And then she walked away. No offer to have anyone help us load it or anything.
