Any kind of good deal you may find is likely overshadowed by how bad you feel when their employees disrespect you. I purchased 30 cinder blocks. The prices were competitive with Home Depot, but still a little higher. At the checkout the yard worker was there and he was acting angry about my order. I said "is there a problem with my order?" He responded with anger and said "do I have a frickin choice?" I told him I would load it up myself and he didn't have to worry about it. It was 3:30pm, not 3:55 right before close or something. When I was backing my truck up I could see him angrily ranting to his coworker. When I got out he just said "open the back of your truck...." Choosing to order me around instead of interact with me like a costumer. It took less than 5 minutes for me and the two workers to load the blocks. The unprovoked rudeness has made sure I'll never spend another dollar at Hardware Hawaii. Unless you enjoy being treated badly, spend your money at Home Depot. read more

It's right around the corner from my house and I am irritated that it took me 20 years to find this place. There's practically everything you need hardware-wise, even electrical solder and soldering irons. They could use a better selection AV-wise but let's just say this place is sooooo gooood! I hear a whistling from the toilet that needed repair. I looked up Google for quick fixes and needed a part. Lowe's only fix was on the Big Island, a plane ride away. I decided to try Hardware Hawaii just closeby on Mapunapuna. They had the part for less money. It was almost noontime and I bought the part after chatting with Clint on the phone. I had a piece of glass cut to fit my window and picked up a few other things, he said the glass would be waiting for me at the register and I went out to pay for it, didn't think I should measure it because it was a simple cut, got home and found out it was 3 inches too short. Went back but they were closed but still there, I asked if I could just get another one real quick, after all it was thier mistake and he told me no. I love the Mapunapuna store from the time I walk in Tracey is there and always calls me by name to welcome me and is a ray of sunshine and the sales associates especially Liza is the best too they make me feel like we are all family if I can't find what I need I just ask and I get it. I'm trying to put together a hang rail system and the other store doesn't stock the 16" shelves...I don't like having to pay in advance and special ordering the wider shelves...then waiting a week for them to arrive. Customer service is awesome, delivery/driver very helpful, However material of lumbers 30% are damaged/split, plywood mildew/rotten had to send the whole stack back to the warehouse. Reason for the 1 star is for customer service and driver. When I build another extension in a year I will look for another place to purchase materials. read more

The guy at the lumber counter (Asian, 60's, with grey hair and glasses) wanted to charge me $3.95 for a foot long piece of 2x4 from the scrap wood bin, and refused to cut it in half because it was raining (huh?). For the record, it's was barely drizzling, off and on. He obviously didn't want to get up off his comfy chair for a small sale. I was planning to buy some light bulbs, a power strip, and a few other things, but decided to go where my business is appreciated. As I was leaving, I told him what I thought of their customer service, and he replied "fine". Two bad experiences is enough for me. The other time was when they refused to allow me to exchange something that was missing a part, claiming the part was in the bag when it left the store, basically calling me a liar. I live 5 minutes away, but I will take my business to City Mill from now on. They are always accommodating, whether you spend a little or a lot, and never refuse any reasonable request. Exceptional staff and very helpful even though I ended up not buying anything. There prices can be a bit higher than the chain hardware places BUT they have pretty much any type of wood you need that they other places won't. I built something for the Missus for Mother's Day and went to every possible place including Re-Use and this was the only place that had everything. The wood I wanted costed nearly $500.00 and the guy in the lumber department was nice enough to price out everything and print out receipts for various woods to find a more affordable option. Eventually I went back to the chain store but Hardware Hawaii still helped me to figure it all out even knowing I wasn't going to buy from them. Dear Hardware Hawaii, I want to love you because I want to shop local. Also, I want to shop in my neighborhood. However you just do not have what it takes to meet my needs. You have fallen short way too many times. Remember the time I came for tile nippers? Your employee did not know what a tile nipper was. I almost bought the wrong thing. I also came for paint primer that one time because I ran out of the one I got from Sherwin Williams. You said your primer was just as good however the quality was not the same. The final straw was when I went for caulking. The gentleman in the area did not acknowledge me. He helped another customer for a good 10 minutes before I decided its caulking, I can't screw it up and got a tube and went home. Well I screwed it up. ARgghh I needed help! I usually go on weekends because this is when the hubby and I tackle our DIY projects. There are not a lot a shopper these on weekends however there also are not enough sales persons to help customers. Please do better. This is a go to place for things for your home and office. Since it is in the Mapunapuna business district it usually is not crowded. Only people who do building and stuff usually are here. When we had the hurricane coming, it was packed and the shelves was empty. I went looking for candles and crank flashlights or car charging flashlights so I wouldn't need to waste money on batteries. Then I got painters tape because I do not want to have to spend more time peeling tape off a window after all the weather. I made a copy of a key for work and it was cheap. The employees are very friendly and helpful. If you do not like crowds then come check out what they have. read more

After the hell that is Woodcraft customer service, it was just so nice to actually be greeted by multiple happy employees, be told exactly where to locate what I was looking for, and offered to cut the lumber and load it for me. This Hardware Hawaii location has it together in a huge way! Wonderfully staffed, knowledgeable and friendly local people working there and serve you with a huge SMILE on their faces. Jamie probably doesn't remember me specifically but that's okay, because I remember her and her friendly attitude and that is one of the huge reasons I drive out of the way to go there. This trip this past week, I TOOK MY MOTHER. She's a huge City Mill fan and loyal customer for more than 50 years of City Mill. She says now that Hardware Hawaii is her place to go for what she needs! At 87 years, Mom rocks in any hardware store, she's like me we love shopping in hardware stores, not Macy's, Nordstrom or other, we are so comfortable and happy browsing the aisle of any hardware store and can be in there for hours! This store is well stocked so is their lumber mill. Geez, haven't seen any place including Lowes or Home Depot that can match Hardware Hawaii's lumber products and prices. We also got the Wart Princess out there browsing....who knows maybe another generation of us family women will get the Hardware Hawaii shopping bug. I've been dreading this rather large project simply due to the drama of going down to the store, wheeling stuff around, then man-handling all the stuff back to my shop! These guys are awesome! I emailed my materials list and within 20 minutes was given an email and phone quote! I arranged a delivery and paid via CC - DONE!!! HOLY CRAP! I can't begin to describe how much time I saved and if you factor in the frustration and physical work necessary to accumulate things at the "other guys" store... WOW! I believe in Aloha and shopping local whenever possible. I have been going to Hardware Hawaii for years and the service is now noticeably worse. I went in today with the intent to spend a bit of money on things I needed for my new house, but some of the folks were simply rude and it's been increasingly harder to justify shopping there. After today, I will no longer go there for anything, even if it means shopping online or having to pickup in town. It's a shame as I want to support the local business, but business is earned and can be lost. read more

Bad service! Called to ask if I could speak to someone from the key dept. She, (Very accented voice) said what I wanted. So I told her that I wanted copies of a file cabinet key made and want to know if they do that and have the blanks. She sad she doesn't know. And then tells me to hold because she has to ring up a customer. When she came back on, I told her I want to be sure they have file cabinet keys. Gave her whatever info on the key. She said she don't know what kind of key it is. Then later said, maybe they get a couple. Again, I asked if she could get someone I could talk to in that department. I told her I want to be sure cause I don't want to drive there for nothing. I live Northshore. She just said "you just got to come ". Period. Nothing else. At least ACE Hardware people are all so helpful and go out of their way to find the right answer or item! The store is very well stocked, and despite having thousands of items, I found what I was looking for quickly because of the intuitive set up. Harley Davidson tried to charge me $23 for three bolts. I went here and spent $2.30 for the same bolts. In the middle of the day, the parking lot is insane with activity, but folks were polite. Terrible service. I drove to the store to purchase a headlamp on sale. The item was not available but another shipment was arriving soon. I went to the Customer Service to request being put on a list to be called when the item arrives. They refused to do so, saying it'll be "first come, first served." Well I'm already there. They refused to cut the factory key blank on the excuse that "it was not their machine," despite having done it in the past and having two different diamond key wheels on the counter. This place is is a decent hardware store. It's considerably smaller than the larger stores and don't carry as many items on their shelves, but should be fine for most people not looking for any specialty type items. They do, however, have a nice sized lumber section. Their prices are on the higher side; the staff is generally helpful. read more
